  • It's time to shear the sheep on Joaquim's farm and we take you along to see what its all about. We also introduce you to some of the best local sheep shearers in the Beira Baixa region of Central Portugal. Joaquim has 159 dairy sheep and before the summer time they shear the wool to help them keep cool in the hot Portuguese summer!
Hope that you enjoy this mini-episode, let us know what you think in the comments :)
We are Ken & Gina. In 2019 we weren't happy with the way things were going for us, so before Brexit, we sold our home and most of our our belongings, and drove to Portugal in our motorhome Bob.
We bought an old sheep and olive farm in Castelo Branco, Central Portugal, where we live the good life with our beautiful animals. Back in 2019, we could not find any videos on living in Portugal, so we started this channel, documenting our move from the city life to the farm life, and buying a farm.

It is fascinating. If it's good wool, it will be sorted by color and quality, carded (brushing out the plant material and aligning the fibers,) then spun and plied, perhaps dyed and sold in various thicknesses. It may even be treated to become washable for socks and such. Those animals are valuable because of all they do throughout their lives. Thanks for sharing.

Did I understand Jaquim, that he hardly makes any money on the wool? I pay $30 for a pair of wool socks. Wool is becoming a popular item. It's not fair that he doesn't get much for his wool. I enjoyed seeing how things work on his farm.

I think it's not a typically used type of wool. They appear to be solely bred for their quality milk. And it's only sheared to keep them heaalthy. Anyhow, that's how I understood it. I'm not certain.

Always fun to see Joaquim doing what he's doing. We always like Joaquim sporting that nice smile😁. We enjoy this time of the year. I'm sure the sheep enjoy shedding their coats to
stay cool. Couple of questions ? Ken, do you eat sardines ? and when will you sit down and have a conversation with Joaquim? Hope you and Gina are doing ok.

I prefer eating any seafood closer to the sea and fresh off a boat. I love sardines but they can be a bit slimy and smelly if they are frozen and not fresh. Saying that Joaquims ones were fantastic and very tasty! 😁👍
I speak to joaquim lots but only film a couple of minutes of video a week, so there's a lot going on off camera, and we have a very good friendship 😊

Hi Ken! So good to see such a tradtional handling of the sheep. I live in the chilean Patagonia., where sheep has been the traditional produce. It's been changing lately to cow farming., though. Farms here are really huge. Small farms have 1.000 sheep. Unfortunately no milk sheep. So no delicious cheeses nearby. Have a nice week.

Oo,, I knew that Soaleira cheese was gonna be delicious 🤤. The sheep are so cute with their summer haircuts. I'm sure they're much more comfortable. It's shame the farmers aren't as well paid for the wool as they once were. If Joaquim gives it away, would it be to a wool cooperative or to friends? I'm not a farmer Ken, but it's exactly the same situation over here in the UK. The price the farmer gets for each wool fleece, barely covers the expense of the shearing operation. I fully recognise and accept, that it's wrong to get political, but that's got to be wrong on the most fundamental of levels. The farmer shouldn't be at the very bottom of the commercial pyramid surely? If the fleece has a commercial value, then this should be recognised and valued accordingly. Enjoyed the video anyway nonetheless, thank you. 😄😄
