Believe me or not this is true, if you know your rock history Saxon started out as a band called Son of a Bitch. In their early days they did a gig in Jenks's bar Blackpool UK. Prior to the gig they had know where to stay & came knocking on the door of our hotel. My Dad said yes as long as they behaved lol! So they did the gig & the next morning while having breakfast were listening to Deep Purples 'Fireball' which I had left out for them. So anyway they bought my Mum some flowers & a card saying thank you & were on their way. It was later on that I read in Sounds magazine they had changed their name to Saxon, so I was well pleased they had stayed with us. What made it even better, on the LP 'Denim & Leather' there is a track called 'Play it Loud' & part way through Biff sings " Going down the beach trying to catch some rays after listening to Deep Purple reminiscing on old days!" Feel quite pleased I helped them with the lyrics! :-)
It's only many years later that we really start to appreciate and realise just how special those metal years were and what a privilege it was to witness so many legendary bands. I saw Saxon a few times in the early 80s including at the first ever Donnington Festival.
nice one mate i never went to donnington , seen iron maiden and ozzy at derby assembly rooms of all places ! clive burr on drums aswell for maiden . amazing days and music
I was at the first Donnington Monsters of Rock festival in 1980, and saw Saxon for the first time. Didn't know this song was about that day, you live and learn !!!
My uncle spent a small amount of time with this band in Barnsley South Yorkshire. He told me it was at Biff Byfords grans house. 🤷♂️🤷♂️ sweet story if true, RIP uncle Adrian.
I just got my Saxon tickets to the Austin show this summer. You better go see all these old school rockers before they no longer can perform or retire. An entire generation of music is leaving us.
80's rock absolutely brilliant days, this reminds me of tommy vance's friday night rock show.. so lucky to of been around to listen to his show. pure gold
Yesss, Saxon habe ich 1981 2x gesehen. 1x als headliner und das erste Mal als "Vorgruppe" ( so hieß das damals..) voooooon : Judas Priest !! 🤓 ....Eintritt : 19 Mark !!!! ..die Karte habe ich noch. Das war in Kiel /Ostseehalle 😀😀😀...
What an absolute classic, I grew up on this stuff and I was lucky my uncle was a proper rocker, I remember his triumphs and BSA’s all his mates would turn up on a Saturday night to go round one of their dads boozers, proper dirty rock pub lol and luckily I was allowed to tag along, used to take me to all the gigs. I used to wash cars cut neighbours grass anything just to save up for the vinyls and t-shirts. They just don’t make stuff like this anymore. Luckily my son must have inherited the taste for it so I get to do it all again 👍🏻
Saxon had the best lead guitar work of all the bands who emerged during their era .Their guitar work hasn't been equalled since in my opinion. Searing , screaming and exciting !
@@lethayle3388 saxon was one my favorite metal bands but lets not leave out def leppard with pete willis and iron maiden of course judas priest but saxon wasn't second to anyone thats for sure.
Gosto muito do saxon. Meu disco preferido é o rock the nation. Batley Cry é minha preferida deste disco. O da maçã também é ótimo. Valeu! Rock é Rock mesmo!

Saxon what a band highs n lows. They've been through it all n still deliver great songs rock on guys ye a great example to up n coming bands. Brilliant
In Britain we have low-key patriotism, I want it to remain that way because nationalism is a nasty, parasitic disease…having said that, these guys make feel so fortunate to be from this land. It’s like you’re born and the metal is just there, readily waiting for you to enjoy. My favourite thing about these wonderful islands of ours….and tea, of course 🤘🏼
I remember the jenks gig Ian message below ,and I saw biff on the tram near Manchester Sq he had been at the studio owned by the then guitarist with white snake early 80s when Saxon had legal issues ....good old jenks I saw Genesis there plus others...nothing for bands now ,it took me a long time but I got a job with record labels in the USA and London at abbey Rd studio ,just got home from seeing Rob Halford ..ofJudas priest in LA.....
Hahaha...great comment! They mined a rich seam of material from (allegedly) Saxon.... however I'm sure none of them died ' in mysterious gardening accidents'! 😂
I’m jealous of the people who lived in the 70’s and 80’s, you guys got to see the best artists ever for less than 100 bucks. Now you have to sell one of your vital organs to get to see them live. And many times incomplete line ups.
@Akron162. They aren't dressed like a glam band, they're dressed like an 80's band man. Just look at Iron Maiden or Judas Priest, they dressed like this all the time.
@cikbuds10 mmm never saw that before well spotted if you watch closely as lights fade you will see biff still has his arm around steve dawson and another guy to his right. watch as a guy on the front row jumps up onto the stage biff then moves to his right the guy that jumped up could have been an eager fan but it is more likely that he was part of the security who got up to eject the fan on stage .. all this is normal behaviour at gigs in the UK
@cikbuds10 by the way i never asked you have Saxon played in your country and did you get to see them ... they are a great live band this is the reason i am still a fan today

Awesome and I always felt they are awesome guys... too bad they split up :-(
??? Saxon are still together
Ryan Thompson Guitarist
yes but not in the original lineup, one of the guitarists and the bassist left and started their own "Saxon".
All i'm proud about is I helped just a little bit towards rock history!
That is awesome! :)

I desperately wanted to go to Donnington 1980 but I was only 14 and no way was I allowed. All my favourite bands. Such a brilliant era for music.
The Mighty Saxon still here 2024. 🎸✌️🎸
💯...swapped my rush ticket for the Bingley hall for a saxon front row manny apollo ticket.
@@hartley339I love Saxon but not sure I'd have passed up Rush for Saxon😂
Even as a young lad I knew how good this music was when it first came out.......And its still as good today.

Great choice. I might consider it for mine also. 😃

10000000000000% true
Indeed. Can't beat starting a song with a guitar solo.😎

Yes the Internet did blow up with this epic song. Anybody who thought Steve Dawson was a slacker bass player is mistaken

TheHumbuckerboy yes Oliver has a beautiful sweet but searing tone. We see him sometimes because he's from the same area
I'd say they were equal with Judas Priest during that era in terms of guitar work. Early heavy metal at It's finest.

Grande Saxon! Antes, ahora y siempre!...
... and all I can say is : This Song is a True Metal Hymn !
... and SAXON played on !!!
Saw Saxon back in 2014 and Biff sang just as good as his did in this performance

yeah baby yeahh
Saxon in the 80ties were my favourite rock band...saw them too live
Saw them on that tour, 19.03.1983. Amazing concert! I was 16 . :)
Just before dawn in the cold light
We came out of the night
A great expectation from the man who ran the show
Will it rain, will it snow, will it shine, we don't know
Are there clouds up in the sky
We sat in the sun, woah-oh-oh
And the bands played on
And the bands played on
And the bands played on
See the people, feel the power
There was sixty thousand there
Just like thunder the crowds began to roar
Where you there, did ya know, did ya see all the show
There was magic in the air
We sat in the sun woah-oh-oh
And the bands played on
And the bands played on
And the bands played on
See the rainbow shining brightly
Shooting rockets to the sky
Making music and it rolled on through the night
You could hear on the air rock n' roll everywhere
We were strangers in the night
We sat in the sun woah-oh-oh
And the bands played on
And the bands played on
And the bands played on
And the bands played on
And the bands played on
Saxon what a band highs n lows. They've been through it all n still deliver great songs rock on guys ye a great example to up n coming bands. Brilliant

Spinal Tap was modelleid after Saxon but even ST could not reach this level. Truth is stranger than fiction.
Hahaha...great comment! They mined a rich seam of material from (allegedly) Saxon.... however I'm sure none of them died ' in mysterious gardening accidents'! 😂
And none of their drummers choked on vomit... someone else's vomit
The ST guys themselves only talked the urban myth. What really happened we never know...
My first metal LP 1980 still a great band should be talked about the same as priest maiden nwobhm still love it
👍👍👍👍👍👍
This can’t be 37 years ago ,jeez feels like last week ,should have been monsters like Maiden but didn’t seem to happen....🤔

C'mon Biff🌴
@ManofWar55 yeah, but since they are not a glam rock band, the image simply doesnt fit.
Is this taken same concert Power & the Glory in 83? Live in Nottingham if I'm not mistaken
HEAVY METAL CON CLASE
0:54 damn
I'm here for Biffs eyebrows
Better than Def Leppard.
John Clarke def leppard commercial rock
Stefano Spanio not their first album
Def Leppard’s first album is literally the best metal album ever
With the permission of earthshaker of Y&T@@IRockYouOff4534
First 2 Def Leppard are classic. Even dig Pyromania. Yes, it's commerical but imo some classic tunes. Saxon were in another league though of course.
Saxon when they were good befor the split, Turncoat Bumford & Quinn!!!!!
At last part Did Biff push that boy or he's been pulled by him
