Another great video! Your babies are beautiful! It's so neat to see their change from summer to winter and waking up from dormancy. Ever since I started watching your videos, my Haworthia already look a million times better!!
This video just saved me! I bought some Haworthia because I wanted a non-toxic plant my cats can be around and I am soooo new to growing. Thanks for the video 💕
I know im late to the party, but I have two cats and they are not in the slightest interested in my plants. Do your cats eat them? I’ve heard so much about avoiding poisonous plants when you have pets, but mine don’t go near my plants
Wow you hit it on the head AGAIN!!! My Haworthia looked shriveled most summer and now looked very etiolated , even in my Southern window ( I live in Boston) and I thought it looked weird lol. Thank you for the video 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 Always at the right time too :-)
Oh bless you, my haworthia cuspidata started looking weird and I just didn't know what it wanted! Turns out summer started a month ago here! I almost let it outdoors thinking it might need a bit more sun, that was a close call! Thank you very much
great info! thanks for sharing! I have two pots of these haworthia, not sure of the variety because i rescued it from being thrown away. mine was kind of shriveled and doing nothing untill now, its starting to fill up and grow a bit tall. now that i know this is a winter grower i will give it more light and more water. I have the worst luck with this type of suculent but it may be that i was treating them wrong since i thought all suculents kind of slow down in winter... i have a lot of googling to do! thanks again!
The roots are so ginormous and I thought the same thing. I think they dont have room to sink into the soil like they want to do bc its probably full of roots in that pot. I pick a pot that size for just a few very small haworthias. I couldnt imagine what's going on in the pot with those roots. They are beautiful and I say this with no judgments.. just my opinion.
It’s hard to find info on haworthia going dormant for summer. Seems like some people disagree but I really want to know so I can understand my plant better
Can you separate the pups while they are in their growing stage? Did you separate some of yours pups? yours look amazing 😉 some looked stuffed into the pots 😝 Should I also fertilize once they wake up? I’ve also noticed on my Haworthia’s, that the bottom leaves start to die even while they are dormant, am I not watering enough or maybe too much water 🤷🏻♀️? Thank you 😊 love watching your informative videos. I’m glad you take the time to help educate some of us newbies. 🤓
Idk if you're still active on here, but if you are, would you happen to have any info on the dormancy period of H. Springbokvalkensis? I've read it's dormant in the winter and active in the summer instead of vice versa, but mine has started to send up a tiny inflorescence and it's November in the northern hemisphere. The inflorescence hasn't grown much, and I was wondering if I should water it regardless? any information is helpful.
What is the Maximum temperature in summer in ur area?? And how u water them in summer... ?? Do they get dormant in summer... ?? And how much light u give them in summer n were they in complete shady area outside in summer??
I love seeing your Haworthias!! Would you recommend putting them outside for the summer to get more growth and of course, they would get rain water, too? Mine are all inside. Thanks!!!
Terry Klemesrud, honestly I’ll have to let you know! This is the first year I’ve put them in different environments, some outside some inside to compare. So after they all have their growth periods, I’ll see which I like more. It wasn’t quite a fair summer for the outdoor ones, because I got SO sick and they got severely sun stressed and dry. So I’m curious to see if that helps or hurts them! Maybe the stress is good/normal and I always baby them too much! Who knows! Time will tell! I’ll be sure to let you all know what I think about the comparison!
Thank you so much for putting this video together! I had no idea howarthias go dormant in summer, and managed to kill a couple by over watering them because they didn’t look very well and were going purple-brown. Wish I saw this video earlier! Thankfully, I managed to repot a few of the babies, and I think they’ll be ok now. Summer is just finishing here in Perth but it’s still very warm, so I’ll have to wait and see. The details you shared are fantastic! Thank you!
Ivy Clark, I killed my first Haworthia thinking something was wrong when summer came and it started looking sad, so I overwatered as well! Now I know that is Super common, so I try to spread the word. 😉. I hope your babies start perking up for you as the weather cools off! 💗💗
Your videos are so helpful and informative! Thank you! Did you arrange your haworthias into that nice dome shaped mound or do they just naturally grow like that? I have one in a 2" pot and it is producing offsets. Would love to get it to look like yours one day!
I panicked and put mine in a direct sun spot n they got slightly burned :(( now I know they were just waking up n not etiolating.. Thanks for the video!
Duy Bear, Why thank you! I’m still learning and experimenting with these guys a lot! But I sure do love Haworthia! They just captured my heart for some reason! And I have many more on my “covet list” that I hope to acquire soon! 😝
Christina Eilers there is no set time table to water any plant that is going to be reliable in my opinion. The temp, humidity, light they receive etc., will all be big contributing factors that play into how often they will need Watering. Just watch and observe your plants, and when they start showing signs of shriveling, wrinkling, etc. then it’s a good idea to water. Or, if you prefer a general rule of thumb; when they are actively growing, if the soil is dry you can usually give them a drink without too much fear, and many varieties of Haworthia appreciate that. The problem comes not with the drink itself, but when the soil holds too much moisture, the container is too large, and/or the pot doesn’t dry out fast enough. But with the ones in pumice this isn’t a problem, so Watering whenever they look or feel like they need a drink is a pretty safe thing to do. Even if that’s a couple times a week. Or it might be once a month. Really depends on your environment and the types of Haworthia. I just recommend getting to know your plants, and their stress signs, and then watering them based more on their appearance and environment and less about a schedule. But I’m a very intuitive grower. Not that I’m not a research geek, because I am! But I really go on the signs and needs of the plant and form watering habits based on that and what the weather has been. I touch my plants a lot, I find I can tell by feel when they are thirsty sometimes better than sight. Not all types, but many. Not everyone is this way, we all have our own ways of telling what these guys are needing. Hopefully you can experiment and try to find the way that works best for you! Hope that helped a little. Happy Growing!
Great video I have a haworthia cymbiformis I'm guessing it comes out of dormency in winter to. At the moment the leaves are brown not soft to touch thoe I did divide them up in August here in Australia so that might of been the problem because there getting ready to go dormant in spring any thoughts thanks Rob
So.. if I found some Haws looking all crappy and unknowingly have repotted them and watered them and fertilizer n everything .. it's august and super hot outside Have I done more damage than good?
one more thing.... mine are a bit root bound from being outside all summer in the pots that i got them in, do you think i should take them out and maybe add a bit of new soil or do you think i will compromise the new growth.... or should i wait till spring
Plant Hoarding Adventures, it could probably be fine either way. They enjoy being crowded, but if you do want to repot, doing it with haworthia during their active period in the winter is best in my opinion. If you report when their growth is slowing or dormant they aren’t able to repair any damage as quickly. So I like to repot in the winter with these guys when possible. But I’ve repotted in the summer too and they’ve done fine. Just ideally I like to repot when a plant is actively growing. Some might disagree, but I’ve found they do best for me that way! 😉
Michele Jones, not sure how this question got lost, but I see I never answered you! Mine get most east light with a bit of southern as well when they are outdoors in the summer. I have a large partially closed in porch with huge east windows and a large south window on the end as well!
Ashley Glassman / Ya Dig It? ??I don't either! Weird, don't remember who it was for! Oh well, thx for letting me know! Live ur VD's, have learned so MUCH! 💜
Very nice. How do you spell what sounds like 'eddy latian'? Sorry, I'm not poking fun--serious question. I found emulate pedialyte, and all sorts of stuff. :)
inhim7777777, are you referring to Etiolation or etiolated? This means stretching to reach the sun! 😉. Sorry I should have written that in the comments perhaps! I’ve tried googling every spelling I could think of for a word someone was saying in a plant video as well! 🤣. It’s frustrating, so I’m glad you asked! I’m guessing this is what you are asking about though! If not let me know! Some plants start do start stretching up when they are going to bloom, which is what “bolting” refers to, and it can look almost exactly the same in some plants. But with these guys the entire plant doesn’t stretch when they are blooming, a flower stalk just appears, and shoots up, so if the leaves are stretching with these guys it’s typically either etiolation or just a growth spurt when they are waking up. Hope that helps!
Yes, that's it. Thank you for the reply. It's no problem. You don't have to spell things out. I just found you. Your soil videos have been very helpful. I think pumice is the 'missing ingredient' I've been looking for-I'll be buying some. If you ever do a short Q&A, I'd like to know about fertilizer. You mentioned it in passing in one video I saw. Maybe there's another as I watch more. Thank you again.
I just now saw the title for this: Pruning Etiolated Succulents / Leaf And Stem Propogation ua-cam.com/video/OcAR-RdCTCo/v-deo.html :) So you did write it down.
How do you check for Gasteria's dormancy? I know that they are related to haworthias, but I'm not sure when it is supposed to really grow (because it has a very shallow, unestablished root system 😂). How should I force it out of dotmancy because it will need roots soon.
Derps a Lot, Gasteria are typically winter growers too, and slow down and have a quiet period in the summer heat. Indoors that usually just looks like a bit more growing and greener color in the winter months, and a bit slower and sometimes less green color in the summer. But it really depends on the variety. Some are so slow growing many don’t notice their growth cycle changes. But for the most part they usually grow more in the winter months. Does that help at all?
Ashley Glassman / Ya Dig It? That helps greatly, thank you so much. I was scared that I wasn't watering it correctly or that I was going to rot it. Our temps havent been consistant in the northeast (cause it goes from below freezing to 60° in a day lol), but i keep mine indoors, so it's around 55-65 degrees. I'm not sure if my variety grows very noticably, but i really hope i'll be taking care of it better 🤣
Linh Phùng, likely if you live in a tropical environment your Haworthia will likely not go dormant, but will just slow down its growth at the hottest times of the year. 💗
Toyon95, actually in this case no. Haworthia are dormant in the hottest months, regardless of which hemisphere they are in. They like lower levels of light, and more shady places, and in hot weather they shrink into the ground and rest to avoid the hottest sun. Now in mild environments without drastic differences in seasonal temperature and sun intensity, they won’t really have an obvious dormant period, they will just grow more in the coolest months and less in the warmer. 💗
Ashley Glassman / Herbal And Succulent Alchemy are you talking of any haworthia? My zebra has grown very much during this summer and we had 40 Celsius! In the same pot I have a semi trasparente one like yours that has become brown instead 🤷🏻♂️
I have 2 haworthia cooperi, purchased from the same seller at the same time (in feb). When I first purchased them, one of them was showing extremely tiny new pups, and both were plump. I potted them separately and checked that they both have good roots. The one with pups have really grown, producing pups all around the mother haworthia. Is the peculiar since it is march now and the plant should be going into dormancy? On the other hand, the other haworthia is very soft, and I think this is from dormancy since its roots were white and healthy and i've been watering it once every week (it's in a 2" terracotta so I figured every 7 days isn't too much water). Should I continue watering the pup-producing one even though it's march? And should I water haworthias during dormancy?
I do not agree with your theory. From my experience my haworthia never do that, but mine are outside under cover with very very good filtered light. They just start growing, no elongated growth at all.
I bought a few of these over the summer & had no idea they went dormant in the summer. I knew they hadn’t grown any
Hi superb howarthea collection. Love watching your videos
It feels like heaven watching your bundle of haworthias!

Super helpful, I was getting worried and mine looks just like the ones you're showing. I did put it closer to the window to be sure. Thanks!
Waking up and going crazy... thats so sweet :D Greatings from north-west germany :)
Wow you have some beautiful haworthias, but some of them are screaming for a repot
The roots are so ginormous and I thought the same thing. I think they dont have room to sink into the soil like they want to do bc its probably full of roots in that pot. I panicked and put mine in a direct sun spot n they got slightly burned :(( now I know they were just waking up n not etiolating.. Thanks for the video!
Great information! Thanks a bunch!
Informative video... Could you please tell me about your potting mix proportion details...thanks
beautiful plants! you sure know how to grow them

What kind of haworthia is the one in the wood pot?
Thanks, awesome info. 🌼🌺🌸
Hai..how can you water your haworthia?..i live in the Philippines..is it owkie for them in a sunny day?..or rainy days?..
I have a few in pumice so I don't know how often to water during the winter. I live in the U.S.

Just watched this video but oh my Ashley, what do you feed those babies on? They 're indeed pretty😍

Is it possible for haworthias to grow in a tropical country?
Won't they stay dormant forever?
Thx! When u have te outside, what type of sunlight do they get? Easy , west. south, north, combo...?

Linh Phùng, likely if you live in a tropical environment your Haworthia will likely not go dormant, but will just slow down its growth at the hottest times of the year. 💗
Ashley Glassman / Succulent Alchemy ohhh thank goodness. Cuz i just got a haworthia cooperi and it'd be sad to never see it grow bigger than a coin XD
Lindas 😘
Do they sleep during summer because the place where they're from it would be winter?
Toyon95, actually in this case no. Haworthia are dormant in the hottest months, regardless of which hemisphere they are in.
