You NAILED it .. Bono was very emotional at this time in June 2001 as his father was dying with cancer and eventually passed in August that year...2 weeks before 9/11! I was at the gig just 1 week after he buried his father and it was the most spiritual experience I've ever had!
@@pascalmerschaudio I think he is referring to live at slane castle which was 8 days after his dad's funeral. This was 2 months before his dad passed from cancer.
Bono’s dad was extremely ill during this tour. Yes, Bono did that every night on the US tour but it is 100% clear that those performances was about his dad. You don’t behave that way in that song if it is about looking cool. Especially at the end with his head on the mic.

Bono's connection with the audience has always been an important and intimate part of the whole U2 live experience . In the early days he used to enter the crowd for the connection between artist and audience a physical bond to add to emotional . Now it's the a lone person that conveys that powerful and beautiful bond between U2 and fans , so beautiful.
Bono was worshipped like a god in the 80's, at least in the UK and the Netherlands. At some point our Top 2000 ever, contained more than 20 songs by U2
I've watched this exact performance at least 200 times since 2001 but watching you watch it actually made me cry....and I'm a 36 year old man!! Music is the most powerful tool when crafted with passion and soul. You should react to U2 - Miss Sarajevo live Milan.
Bono was dying inside due to his fathers impending death. So he did a thing he often does where he sings to a girl from the audience and brings her on stage sometimes. Then... man that was such a magical mystical thing, he's in pain, he can barely sit upright and he sings to her and not just makes her day, but makes her lifetime. Two strangers share a moment, and notice his respectful, how CHASTE, that moment is. He's both a man dying inside and a knight in armor to her, and the moment ressurects him.
"Joshua Tree" is my favorite album of the decade of the 80's ("Thriller" towers over everything else, and doesn't need my vote.) "Rumours" was my top in the 70's ("Dark Side of the Moon" AND "Wish You Were Here" defy classification, so no nastiness please...though, now that I think about it, I've never met bona fide a**holes who were *REAL* Floyd fans.) Aaaaannnnd the 90's, for me, was "Siamese Dream" (I cannot defend this one. Even I laugh, because though it is true, even my loyal, soulmate Queen of a Wife of 25 years... STILL just shakes her head over that one, at least once a year, if somebody brings it up. I know better than to bring it up!) I wasn't around in the 60's... and I think the concept of "Album" was outlawed beginning in the 2000's, so no picks on my end from lived-through experience
I've seen them 6 times in concert, including that tour. Amazing band, they've helped me through life from their first album to now. I really enjoy watching you youngsters enjoying the classic music of yesteryear. You're my favorite. Keep up the good work. Try some early UFO, early KISS, before 1979. Dio, way too many. Thanks
Listening to U2 live is just a goose bump fest - every time. I saw them in Australia years ago and I had adrenalin rushes almost continuously for two and a half hours...spiritual, euphoric, joyful, emotional - what an experience! Even listening to this on YT gets me every time!
I've heard that song hundreds of times over the past 30+ years and I've never had any impression it has anything to do with death. To me, it's always been about him lamenting the love for a partner when he knows that their relationship for whatever reason just isn't going to work. The sadness of the song is in his recognition that the love that makes his life worth living, is the same that tears him apart.
Jayy, another beautiful reaction to a beautiful moment👏 I've been lucky enough to have seen U2 twice in concert, and they DO NOT disappoint! I'm Irish and have seen them play Belfast and in their home town, Dublin☘️'With Or Without You' is one of my fav U2 songs - they performed it at both concerts and a wept like a baby - it was just SO emotional! How sad his father had recently died. At the end of the song he had his head against the headphone, probably thinking of him. It was beautiful for the young fan with him lying down, so sweet. xxx

If you look at their Live Aid performance, security was blocking fans,so Bono jumped down from the stage and hugged the young lady for a long time and rocked her back and forth.
There were 3 women getting crushed by the crowd. Security was at the wrong angle to see it happening, but Bono could see them from where he was on the lower stage - but he didn't have a mic, and Security couldn't hear him, so he jumped down, over a wall, to the crowd level, so he could talk directly to Security. They pulled the 3 women out of the crowd, and Bono essentially saved their lives. The first two were okay, but the third girl was literally shaking from the upset, so he danced with her to calm her down. The rest of the band couldn't see what was going on from where they were on the main stage, but they just kept on playing an extended version of Bad. They were pissed at Bono, because they were also supposed to play a 3d song - Pride (In the Name of Love), which was then a hit, and the song they were most known for, in the US - but because the extended version of Bad went on so long (over 11 minutes), they had played longer than their set was supposed to last already, and had to leave the stage without playing Pride.
This song always makes me cry my father was an alcoholic for years during my childhood and finally cleaned himself up when I was 13 and he hasn't touched a drop but when I hear this song it tears at my heart
The Joshua Tree was written lyrically by Bono specifically for & about America. Bono was so adept & brilliant lyrically, that he he could write songs with a surface meaning & a deeper more macro meaning as well. While this song is written in a person to person context, it is also a song written by the world to America. Bono is a outright genius & Poet Laureate for a generation.

You should watch them at live aid ‘85. A couple of women were getting crushed at the front of the crowd and when he couldn’t get the attention of the stewards/security to see what he was telling them he jumped off stage and pretty much told security which ones were being hurt/crushed, lifted them over barrier and has a dance with them
with or without you was written by Bono about his fight between being a rock star and a Christian. He struggled with his fame, thus he can't live with or without it

Love U2! Bono has been married to his high school sweetheart, Ali, for 38 years. They have four kids. I was at one of there concerts, and he dedicated All I Want Is You to his wife. He said my baby is having my baby. She was there, and it was so sweet.
His son is gonna be a star as well. He’s the frontman for the inhalers. He’s super talented. And Bono’s daughter is a superstar actress Eve Hewson. Talent runs in the family
Poor Bono. His voice was SHOT for this performance. He could barely speak the night before, they thought they were going to have to cancel this show. He did amazing
That must be one of the best moments in rock history. That's a truly real performance. It's so honest and brutal that ir hurts. That song is really special, a gift from an amazing band. That was a beautiful and sweet moment. I'm not sure, though, how a moment like this would be seen nowadays...
It's a very complex and layered song that can mean different things to different people. On the surface it sounds like a love song or a song about lost love. For me it has a very Christian subtext. The yearning and the difficulty to be like Christ. His word is what we aspire to but with the temptations of the physical world it's also very hard to achieve. There's the push and pull between wanting to live with Christ in your heart but also, sometimes wishing he wasn't there. But in the end you wouldn't have it any other way. "I can't live with or without you". As difficult as it is I'd rather have you in my life than not. It's a daily struggle. But for many it's so worth it. On the other hand, maybe it's just a good song.
The Live Aid performance was when U2 showed the world that they were a stadium group. Went from playing 10,000 seater gigs into being able to hold 100,000 plus audiences in their hands .It was just their time to shine. Been shining (mostly) since! 😃

One Tree Hill is beautiful- it’s about their friend and roadie from New Zealand, of Maori descent who was tragically killed. Very insightful... where it’s about someone he may loose to death soon or something. I’ve heard it’s a spiritual song about Bono’s relationship with the Christian church. The first part of the song is about the death of Jesus “see the stone set in you eye, see the thorn twist in your side, I’ll wait for you”. Jesus died on the cross and they put a sword in his side to see if he was dead. His followers are waiting for him to return.
IMO the Rattle & Hum live version is the best version of this song. Not that the Boston one is anything to sneeze at. And U2 for sure loves their fans. My ex-wife was pulled up on stage twice.

I 2nd the request for U2 Live Aid. They stood out as well as INXS and new up & coming bands to watch. Decades later still seeing these dudes for my Birthday at MSG & Barclays. And NJ if I can afford it. 🐰 #ENRGYZRBunny
The band had his back throughout the whole performance. Very emotional time this was for Bono
can we just talk about how cool the band plays, and the guitar from the Edge
U2 Live Aid 1985... memorable to say the least...epic
Oh My....Good Manners and Respect still alive.
Beautiful song beautiful instrumental great drumming
I was at this show. Amazing!
Love Bono.. he brings fand up a lot and sings to them. So sweet. 'ONE' and 'I still haven't found I'm looking for are' just beautiful! If you react to one you should watch the og video.. Bono is so fine in that lol
Love this song! My fave by them!
thank you Jayy..
Girl been watching awhile and u just keep gettin better love the channel thanks for amazing hard work
Biggest Band Of All Time
IMO the Rattle & Hum live version is the best version of this song. Not that the Boston one is anything to sneeze at. And U2 for sure loves their fans. My ex-wife was pulled up on stage twice.
