Thank you very much coachstrout’s classic fights for uploading this fight :-) I'm watching right now the career of Renaldo Snipes and watch already Floyd Cummings fight a this is very helpfull :-)
That long jab of Snipes really made a big difference he peppered him up from long range i was in high school when this fight happened still remembered like it was yesterday
This is probably the best boxing channel on UA-cam and it has the word classic in the title. However, this fight would not be a classic. It would just be an old fight.
lol,,,,,, you must be one of those grumpy old men who's stuck in the past, dont wanna see change or any evolution , & yelling at the Younger People to "GET OFF YOUR LAWN" !!!!!!!!!1 LMAO
As I’ve said elsewhere, Snipes was correct: he was chosen out of disrespect. Any one of the guys he named would have crushed Mustafa’s skull. This was when the gap between the real heavies and the guys under 200 lbs was starting to grow hastening the growth of the cruiserweight division. Small heavyweights were starting to get beaten up by big heavyweights. Guys like Leon Spinks, Marty Monroe, Ossie Ocasio, and S.T. Gordon won heavyweight fights, but they all endured some serious heavyweight DEFEATS to bigger fighters. Some of those heavyweights-like Page, Weaver, and Cooney-actually seemed to enjoy beating up on smaller guys. All this is to say that Mustafa was a plump dogfish trying to wade into waters inhabited by nothing but great white sharks….and those great whites were getting bigger and bigger. Seriously, could you imagine Mustafa getting in the ring with someone like Cooney? Cooney may not be an all time great, but he would have been way too much for Mustafa.
I agree. Remember what Jorge Luis Gonzales did to a late / end of career Snipes ? Snipes was by that stage of his career was at 6’ 2 inches tall, suddenly a small heavyweight
@@cycletouringoz5760That’s very true. I DO remember the fight with Gonzalez. I’ve commented on that elsewhere on UA-cam. It was a sad spectacle to behold, and Gonzalez enjoyed every minute of it. Gonzalez got what he deserved, though, when he faced off with Bowe and Witherspoon. You’re right about the size thing, though. Heavyweights started getting big in the late 70s and early 80s and the just kept getting BIGGER. We went from having a heavyweight champ under 200 in Leon Spinks to HUGE guys like Bowe and Lennox Lewis in just 15 years…and now there are guys like Tyson Fury. Just like there was a need for a cruiserweight division, I think there needs to be a SUPER-heavy division for guys over 250 lbs.
Side note, Eddie went on to lose his tittle and 15 round decision getting dropped in the 12th round to Michael Spinks who's at ring side scouting Eddie.
Sidenote to that Micheal Spinks got out of fighting Eddie when Eddie was in shape by having the scales fixed so eddie appeared to be over weight and refused to fight eddie and the fight had to rescheduled. The next time eddie had trouble making weight and lost the fight you mentioned due to having to lose alot of weight by fight time.. Someone later but 5 pound bag of sugar on the scale and it weighed 10 lbs. The promoters didn't care nor the boxing governing bodies. So spinks had to come out at least 5lbs under to make the weight. Eddie should not have lost the on that round on lthe ate hit without being warned before on punching late which he was not. Also if you watch the fight you will notice snipes just ran and missed his punches for the most part. Throwing punches that miss do not count as points. The fight should have been a draw. They were pushing for snipes to fight Holmes and that is why mr snipes won. Snipes got his shot with Holmes, connected on a wild punch and almost won the title. Snipes won most of the time like Trevor Berbick did because he was unpolished wild and quirky in his style.
This had to be the dumbest decision a fighter ever made!! You know you're going to defend the LW title vs spinks and you balloon up to 201 to unnecessarily fight a HW?? Absolutely stupid!!
This was back when interesting fights, such as this one, would regularly appear on network television. Today, we would be forced to pay ... to watch even this.
@@bigdaddy4069 Exactly! Not only was this a defeat for Eddie and a loss of the Lt Hvy title, he also couldn't reach the weight limit for the Spinks rematch. All this nonsense would consequently result with the end of Mustafa Muhammad's career and a potential chance at greatness. For all it's worth, Eddie was a very good fighter who could have reigned for years if he'd just stayed in shape.
@@Belburg I thinking the loss to James Scott was jitters having to fight inside Rahway state prison. Spinks beat him soon after the Snipes fight having to get down from all the weight. Whereas, it is a tough call concerning a Johnson rematch. Marvin was definitely seeing some new life in his career once Spinks moved up to hvy. Eddie never really reclaimed that spark after Snipes and would have indeed suffered a beating at the hands of Johnson.
This one was better, I would rather see good tactical boxing than the nonstop hugging from Ruiz and Holyfield. Although yeah this fight wasn’t entertaining by any means
Eddie had trouble making 175 so what was his usual weight entering the ring as a light heavy? 190? Why is an extra 10-15 lbs look so bad? Obviously he had never heard of weight room or strength training.
Eddie put on too much weight, though he had hurt his back early in training, which kept him from running much during training. Snipes performance was pretty smart, if rather cowardly. He used his jab knowing the counter puncher Muhammad didn’t chase fighters well, and was overweight. But Eddie’s biggest loss was his desire to fight as a heavy, which gave him way too much weight to cut before his fight with Michael Spinks, which arguably cost him that belt.
what are these commentators watching, saying Snipes was up every round?? are you serious? lol it would seem to me that if someone is putting Snipes ahead they are watching Blade Runner "i cant understand why Mustafa is not getting in there" ....maybe that Snipes is 3 inches taller, 14 pounds heavier, 5 years younger with a 6 inch greater reach exactly my point, they should not be paid to do that job even the judges oh man except for the last one "3 rounds Snipes, 5 rounds Muhammed, 2 rounds even" with whom i would likely agree
Omg,one referee scored it 5 rounds Eddie, 3 rounds Snipes,2 rounds even,LOL what a joke...so bad scoring has always been around I guess. Unreal...I scored it 9-1-1 for Snipes.
Eddie Mustafa Muhammad management despised Larry Holmes and tried encouraging him to take on Larry Holmes because the hated Holmes. Braverman and Flood tried to sabatoge Larry Holmes career
Eddie would've been absolutely crushed by Holmes if that fight ever happened. Larry was in the peak years of his title reign at the time, it would've been a no contest bout.
Who cares about the decision. Big heavyweight running and taking potshots at a light heavy (oxymoron). Should've been a draw. No one deserves a w here.
Eddie Mustafa Muhammad played Billy Fox in Raging Bull.
Great upload, great quality. Thank you coach.

Renaldo should have stopped Eddie. Eddie screwed up his career, and in many ways, so did Renaldo.

Eddie weighed in a few pounds overweight for the rematch, which Spinks refused to go through with even as a non-title fight. Pissed off the fans.
