  • Announcing the recipient of the Charleston-Chichester Award for a Lifetime’s Excellence in Short Fiction. We are delighted to reveal that Edna O’Brien is this year’s recipient of the only award to recognise long-standing creativity and achievement in the short story genre. She has also won the American National Arts Gold Medal and the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award. Congratulations to Edna O'Brien who is one of the greatest writers of prose. Every sentence she writes is poetry. Her style is both lucid and lyrical I admire her works greatly.

Fascinating, profound and poetic in her eloquent diction she expresses her thoughts with measured effect . .Her love of best literature and her experience of writing held me in suspense and in appreciation.
At the end when answering the question- Why do you write? Edna O'Brien had me feeling what is so often hard to put in words. Her explanation was breathtakingly movingly honest, deeply spiritual and profoundly personal .

What a fascinating woman. Loved her.
The country girls my first read in the 1970's about her early life in Ireland. I have read it many times and many more of her books. She uses words like an artist paints a picture.
    A born writer.

I’ve never been envious of anyone but I certainly was of Edna O’Brien not just her ability to write such unique magical tales but the equal talent to convey them in speech. I am certainly not a misogynist but I’m always prone to compare her to one of my favourite actors and life’s characters Richard Harris and trust she would never have hated the comparison stated with sheer admiration. RIP uniquely special Lady.

Oh, how I enjoyed this interview! Edna's thoughts and insights to writing are the most inspiring and wise still in 2019.
