  • In this 1992 edition of HoCoPoLitSo's "The Writing Life," professor Coilin Owens of George Mason University speaks with Edna O'Brien, an Irish playwright, memoirist, poet and fiction writer. Novelist Philip Roth described her "the most gifted woman now writing in English." The two discuss her work and its connection to Irish culture, Ireland's negative reaction to her first book, the instinctive and emotional nature of her work and the importance of James Joyce. Ms. O'Brien reads from her short story, "Lantern Slides," from the book of the same name. What an Artist, what a great soul, and what a lucid, fervid writer. I wept when I heard she had passed, for her 'voice' was so original, so raw, and authentic.....a sovereign talent! Edna will be forever missed. I have a brief few moments memory, when we bumped into one another in a supermarket buying groceries, and we laughed as we exchanged about the glory of her writers presence, and that there we were paying coinage for the veggies! God Bless this beautiful, elegant muse!.

How wonderful! She's always so passionate talking about literature... I could listen to her mellifluous voice until the end of my days. There's never enough of Edna O'Brien online. Thank you so much for sharing this gem. I enjoyed it immensely. Best wishes.

We're so glad you found Edna's show and liked it. She is indeed a gift to literature. We're happy to host her show, and many others. Perhaps you'd enjoy our show featuring Grace Paley, another amazing short story writer, or Paula Meehan, a fierce and insightful Irish poet and playwright.

This video makes my day. It is a pure gem. I love the way Edna O Brien speaks about literature with such poise, elegance and passion. Her passionate voice comes out in her most beautifully crafted sentences in her short stories - while they are written in prose, they belong to epic poetry. Her collection of stories entitled 'Lantern Slides' is my all time favourite. The opening sentence in the opening story is the most exquisite prose I've ever read.

Thank you so much for your comment -- she is a wonderful writer and speaker, agreed. We appreciate your discernment! If you enjoyed Ms. O'Brien's program, perhaps you'd like our show featuring Grace Paley, another short story writer of distinction.

Practically everything I read is about science, technology, finance, and other documentary subjects, but along the way, I read The Love Object, probably 45 years ago - a collection of short stories by Edna O'Brien, and it left an indelible impression on my psyche. Each story is quite different, each about the perception of life (or sometimes of a moment) by a different woman.
I loved it. I came here looking for a passage from "How to grow Wisteria", to use as an analogy for mental hurt that my daughter is living through - but I can't find it online.

Dear Mike, Agreed, The Love Object is an amazing distillation of life in each facet of a story. I don't have any help for you in finding Edna reading the story, but here's a link to a copy of the actual short story:

What a terrific program. And what a shame there wasn't time for her to wax on about Joyce, like she was chomping at the bit to.

It did look like Ms. O'Brien had lots to say about Joyce! And I'm so glad you enjoyed the show. Perhaps you'd like our edition with Eavan Boland if you liked this show. All the best.

It's a shame she wasn't allowed to talk at length about Joyce. An utter disaster.
