    RULE THE WAVES II
Rule the Waves II is the sequel to our successful game of ship design and naval battles, Rule the Waves. Whereas Rule the Waves ended by 1925, Rule The Waves II covers the entire time period from 1900 to 1955, including aricraft and aircraft carriers. Ownership of Rule the Waves is not required to be able to play Rule the Waves II. Rule the Waves II places you in the role of 'Grand Admiral' of a navy during the first half of the 20th Century. The game is centered on designing ships and fighting naval battles, but politics, economic and foreign policy decisions will be necessary as the Player guides their navy's deployment, construction and operations during a period of great technological innovation and political tensions. Rule the Waves is modeled on the period up to the end of the second world war, but is not intended to precisely recreate history. Rather RTW2 gives the Player the tools to lead a navy during the era when 'steam and iron' dominated the high seas.

(When its all said and done, this battle will go down in history. I know I should have waited after the battle for this but might as well share it.)
To: Berlin, High Admiralty Office, Admiral Torturpitz
During the Battle of Jutland, the Kriegsmarine hereby recognizes the great courage and devotion to battle that was displayed by the single Destroyer DD S60. She was observed steaming full ahead alone into multiple British capital ships and escorts. S60 dodged and weaved countless shells, not taking a single hit, and closed the distance to the enemy battleships to only a thousand yards or so. She proceeded, under a hellstorm of fire, to launch all torpedoes towards the enemy. After a couple minutes, a massive explosion rocked one of the British battleships, slowing her to a crawl. That one torpedo hit allowed a division of light cruisers to close distance and put two more torpedoes on target, effectively sinking the British ship. DD S60, now disengaging, took some medium damage as she fled behind the battle line, signaling the end of one of the bravest maneuvers ever seen on the high seas. In light of her extraordinary endeavor, we, the General Navy Department, recommend DD S60 and her crew to be awarded the Zerstörerkriegsabzeichen, or Destroyer War Badge, the highest honor a Destroyer can receive in the Kriegsmarine. We hope you will review and consider our proposal.
Sieg Wird Unser Sein (Victory will be ours),
    General Navy Department

    3 NOV 1908
The North Sea dawns gray and a light drizzle forms a misty haze. Dark shapes slice through the water, steam pistons propelling the iron beasts while black coal smoke belches from the funnels. Radio messages indicate a possible British fleet movement, and the Hochseeflotte can't let this opportunity slip by. Two divisions of Schlachtschiff (Dreadnought) and three divisions of Linienschiffe (Line Ships) form a battle line stretching more than 10 kilometers, with cruisers forming a scouting line in front. As the sun rises, the mist clears. A lookout spots smoke on the horizon: soon a ship rises above the edge of the world. The masts and bridge are those of a man of war, and no other German warships are at sea. The scouting cruisers close to confirm the sighting with a tiny splash of color from the White Ensign. Now the two fleets sail onward, mobile castles of steel and steam, the pinnacle of modern technology, ready to rain fire and death upon each other.
At 0932, the first shot of the battle booms out over the seas. SMS Sankt Kaiser sends a 30.5cm shell flying toward a British cruiser as a ranging shot, followed less than a a minute later by Hohenzollern and Kaiser des Deutchen Reiches. The Hochseeflotte battle line continues northwest until the British Home Fleet battle line enters the scene, whereupon Großadmiral Torturpitz orders a turn to the north. The armored cruiser SMS Balmung, scouting out the head of the British line, lands a 24cm shell on the lead British ship, HMS Anson, but it fails to penetrate the heavy British steel. Within minutes the battle is joined.
At the head of the line of battle, the proud new three-turret Schlachtschiffe boom out their anger at the British. 30.5cm shells tear through the sky, their distant scream merging into the constant din of naval war. Schlesien and Schleswig-Holstein bring up the tail of the line, still waiting to let fly at the foe. Kapitan zur See von Kotori stands calmly: he has seen battle before. The helmsman is not so experienced, however. His muscles tense and his eye twitches as the distant mutter of guns grows louder. The line of battle curves to the north, showing the two trailing linienschiffe the majesty of the massive machines of war, but also revealing flashes of heavy British shells striking, penetrating, detonating, killing, destroying brave sailors. Without the experience of the bloody American war, the helmsman can only fall back on his long hours of training to stand by his post and maintain the ship in formation. He is far from perfect, however, and swings the wheel late. The last division is now slightly out of position, marring the intimidating perfection of the Hochseeflotte battle line. The Kapitan lets the mistake slide, since the nervous helmsman corrects his mistake in a quick and professional manner.
Opposite the Hochseeflotte, the Home Fleet battle formation is a mess: the line is confused and interspersed with other small craft. Dreadnoughts are separated from the battleships and battle cruisers dash around the end of the line with no clear tactical goal. It is a wonder the Tommies can get a clear shot with all the smoke and splashes surrounding them. The call comes up the voice tube from the rangefinder: 15km to the designated battleship. The Kapitan takes a moment to look around at the faces of his officers and men, then leans down to the voice tube. “Commence bombardment.” The massive 30.5cm naval cannons erupt with the orange flash of cordite and the heavy brown smoke blows back across the deck and through the bridge. One of the officers coughs, having not held his breath while the smoke passes. By the time the shells land 17 seconds later, the smoke has passed and the rangefinder has a clear view of the splashes: all short. Gun-layers immediately start corrections for the next volley.
The Home Fleet, despite the disorganized mess of a formation, sticks to the old adage “no captain can do very wrong if he places his ship alongside that of the enemy,” as uttered by the honorable Vice Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson. The battleship line charges gamely on into the teeth of the German Schlachtschiffe. The Hochseeflotte looks on in wonder as the British, the rulers of the sea for centuries, allow their T to be crossed so effectively. At 4.5km, with the very real threat of torpedoes at close range, Großadmiral Torturpitz hoists the signal for Maneuver 45. The two divisions of Schlachtschiffe at the head of the line performs a Gefechtskehrtwendung (battle-turn away) from the offending enemy, while the older Linienschiffe turn towards the enemy and close the range. The smart display of military precision is a testament to the drill and discipline of the Kaiserliche Marine. The Home Fleet, having never imagined a foe could match them, shies away as fear sets in.
A lone torpedo-boat destroyer, one of only two present in the German order of battle, charges in, making smoke. Towering columns of water erupt all around the brave “Kleiner BrotRöster” (Little Bread-Toaster) as it makes an approach on a modern British Dreadnought. The bridge, open on top, is covered with an almost constant deluge of water from the near misses falling all around. A break appears in the shell splashes and the dreadnought is clearly visible. “Torpedo los! Schnell!” A puff of white steam ejects the torpedo from the port tube and the small steam piston putters to life, leaving a trail of bubbles to mark its passage. The shot, however, was rushed, and the dreadnought swings clear. Cursing furiously, the Kapitänleutnant orders his ship about for another attack. In the smoke and confusion, HMS Benbow fails to notice the white streak in the water and is struck in the bow. The explosion rips a 15 foot hole below the waterline and water floods in. S-60 shakes as a 3” shell slices clean through the bow of the ship. One final torpedo is shot at the retreating dreadnought, and the destroyer turns to escape. Taking advantage of the confusion, a squadron of light cruisers makes a run on the stricken Benbow. Two more torpedoes smash holes below the protective armor while the torpedo-boat destroyer sails past, crewmen shaking their fists. Despite the efforts of the damage control crews, the ship is already beyond saving.
Despite long hours of training and practice maneuvers, there is some confusion in the Hochseeflotte battle line. As divisions become too far separated to see the signal flags from the Großadmiral, command falls to the Vizeadmirals and Konteradmirals leading individual divisions. Battle Division 16, consisting of the Bierhalle-class, turns back north to rejoin the Schlachtschiffe. Battle division 18, the Wapen von Hamburg-class, turns south west to engage the older Home Fleet battleships. Battle Division 20, however, is commanded by Konteradmiral Otto de Kepnig. He is not known for his restraint. Seeing several heavy hits on a British battleship, he points to the northwest and orders his ships to advance. “Linienschiffe auf der feind!” (Line Ships at the enemy!)
SMS Schlesien leads her sister SMS Schleswig-Holstein around to the north, away from Battle Division 18. The disorganized British line sees two clear targets, and soon the two ships are subjected to a massive bombardment. A 7.5” shell crashes into the upper bow of Schlesien and passes out the back side, exploding in the sea. The ship shakes again as another shell strikes the armored deck. It fails to penetrate the armor, but shell fragments perforate the uptakes of two of the Schlesien's three stacks, reducing efficiency of the air draft in the boilers. Although it is not a one-sided fight, the veterans from the American war score several heavy hits of their own, but the British have more heavy guns firing. The engineers on Schleswig-Holstein are thrown from their feet as an 11” shell strikes abreast the forward boiler room. As they come back to their feet, water sprays from the overflow vent of a feedwater tank: the impact has allowed seawater into the tank, which is now getting pumped into the boilers. Any sailor knows seawater is highly corrosive, and is far worse at the high temperatures inside a boiler. The engineer officer orders the forward boilers secured and their steam valves shut. The ship is slowed with half the boilers offline, but the boilers can be refilled with clean water in due time. As a final insult, a 13.5” shell from an 1880-era gun strikes Schlesien on the secondary battery deck. The heavy shell smashes through the armor and explodes, tearing men and machines apart. The hitherto rapid fire of the 15cm battery ceases, the boom of guns replaced with the scream of dying gunners. The Chief Gunnery Officer is sent down to assess the damage. Confronted with a bloody mess, he quickly sorts out the dead and wounded from those who can carry on. In just a few minutes, the battery is back in action, scoring a rapid series of punishing hits on their attackers.
Seeing the plight of Battle Division 20, the Bierhalles of Battle Division 16 turn back to assist their comrades. The lighter, cramped ships, lightly armed with 28cm cannons, pass into the fiery jaws of the Collingwood- and Camperdown-class battleships, raining shells down upon them. The gray sea is pierced time and again with exploding steel projectiles, yet enough find their mark that the Home Fleet's fire slackens. Both sides are battered and back out to lick their wounds. This battle has only yet begun.

9th October 1908. The Admiralty, Whitehall, London. In the main conference room, the great and the good of the Royal Navy gather, smiles are few and far between. Admiral of the fleet and first sea lord Sir John Fisher rises to his feet.
"Gentlemen, I presume your all aware of yesterdays events? Just incase your not I will remind you. At around 7.45am units of the German high seas fleet, numbering at least two battleships, along with a number of cruisers and detroyers penetrated Lyme Bay and began to attack coastal shipping." he points to a map behind him. "First they engaged and sank a merchant vessel here, about a mile or so off Exmouth, then 20 minutes later they attacked a coastal patrol destroyer here, a few miles west off the coast near Dawlish Warren. This vessel, HMS Usk, was also sunk. For the next FIVE HOURS these enemy ships stayed in Lyme Bay driving all coastal traffic from the area and disrupting one of this nations most important inshore fishing grounds.
"Needless to say several cruisers and destroyers from the Devonport Flotila were dispatched from Plymouth to deal with them. They reached Lyme Bay at around 10.40 and engaged the raiders. Gentlemen, the battle did not go well. Although we did manage to sink one raiding destroyer, the German cruisers sank one of our armoured cruisers, HMS Hereford, off Lyme Regis and damaged several other ships in the squadron, and all the time the enemy cruisers were engaging our fleet, two of their battleships stood off Chisel Beach and bombarded instilations on and around Portland. It appears that apart from the sunk destroyer the Hun suffered little or no damage."
A nervous murmur filled the room. Sir John raised his hand and called once more for silence.
"What makes this matter worse is the fact that this action took place in our coastal waters, in a busy fishing ground with thousands of civilian observers. This kind of incident can shatter a nations morale and we cannot use the channels of the Fleet Street papers to cover up these events when some of the survivors managed to swim a few miles to shore and others were picked up by local fishermen.
"Gentlemen, as you know we have a new Prime Minister, and Mr Asquith is not happy.
Rare Admiral Callaghan, commander of the home fleet interpted
"But surely our capture of the Bismark Archipelago, will help raise the national spirit."
Sir John looked at him, his face a mask of stern concern.
"Those islands are on the other side of the world, most of the people in this room, let alone the nation do not know where they are. Lyme Bay is on our own south coast, only 100 miles from this very building..."
He let his words hang and the point sink in.
"We need action, and we need it now. I suggest we take the fight to Jerry. I want the entire home fleet battle ready with in three weeks. Everything that can float and has a gun is to put to sea. We formate off the east coast near Rosyth and make best speed straight for Germany. Force Tortugpitz to bring his entire fleet out to meet us, then we win this war with one decisive engagement. It is a high risk plan, but these are dark times." He pointed to a painting of Nelson on the wall of the room. "In times of need the Royal Navy has always come to Britians rescue. Drake did it, Anson did it, Nelson did it, and now we must do it... Gentlemen England expects..."

Interestingly enough, we have a large amount of destroyers due to the amazing foresight of the Kaiser. However, the British seem to be as equally invested, with their massive fleet having many light cruiser and destroyer escorts. Have they perhaps, embraced the idea of Jeune École
? Or is this simply due to the British inability of build larger ships of superior quality, which we are able to do. Additionally, while we used the traditional battle line formation, the British lacked such cohesion. They seemed to swarm around, ships passing each other in different directions. This is unpredictable, which may be advantage, but the advantage of the battle line was used by Admiral Torturpitz to great effect, as he split the battle line to charge into the British fleet. This maneuver caused the disjointed British fleet to falter, and I believe that this shall surely lead to victory!

It is almost 11AM and I am thankful that the hits my ship received were not from any of those 14 inch monstrosities! Britain has gone too far! Only we Germans can build something that large in a proper manner! I must commend my crew, however. Upon being promised double bier rations at the conclusion of this battle they promptly landed a hit at range on one of their Collingwood warships. That would be Hansel - he will receive top honours, especially considering Admiral Tortorpitz declined to provide us with the new rangefinders. She's coming to our house until you finally return again. When reading the letter she sent through, I could sense her anger just by the writing of each letter, let's just say you've caught quite the French girl, hm?
Anyway, enough pestering your dirty love preferences, you're a man now, not the boy I remember playing on the mud with your father's saber. Keep yourself together and come back in one piece, preferably. The Brits shouldn't be too scary to deal with, after all, they arm their canoes with wooden spoons and sugar cubes, just throw a little water and they'll roll over in no time. The girls will be safe here in the house, I've finished the rework on the guest room, so Erina won't complain about the water drops falling out from the ceiling, along with it, the greenhouse is beginning to take shape, I can't wait to finally house my tulip collection there, progress is finally on our side of the fence, am I not right?
So, I think the message was clear, come back in time for Christmas and marry your woman at last, I'm sure she wouldn't be waiting for much longer if she knew about another exposition on the other side of Europe, so you better hurry and win the war for us. This may be the single greatest mission of my life, and, if we're not careful enough, possibly the last one…
Captain Kotori gave me the details about the operation, we, in the SMS Schlesien, along with his brother commanding SMS Schleswig-Holstein, will form the last two bastions of a long battleship collum, as for the Rendezvous point to meet the enemies: Jutland. Our communications experts broke telegraph codes and movement orders. It's quite possible the British are attempting to make a breach on our naval net, giving way for a full scale invasion of northern Germany. We, on the other hand, won't allow a single drop of German civilian blood, whatever it may take from our hands.
We're now in full course for the North Sea. The crews manning the guns aren't as ready as I hoped, so the fight will be hard to win for our side from the very beginning. I've already lost two opportunities to spend time with my family, I won't allow another one because of foolish generals standing before us… The Kaiser's Fleet will be ruling the waves after this engagement, and with that, I hope peace will be closer than ever, here's my foolish hoping to it. The Sunset is coming, it'll be a good moment to reflect and reach out a good solution to prevent more anxiousness in the close future. Day 01, To death we sail…
Gunnery Officer Enos Von Kortmann, Oberfähnrich zur See.

I'm getting shivers just thinking about this. Don't have time for a full reply yet (tomorrow or the day after maybe) but it should be good. Might even send some pictures of my model in action to the discord.

That personal log was amazing! Bravo! I'm almost reluctant to give Doge his command with these beautiful collaborative missions, with one person sailing along with someone else's ship. Cheers!

You know i realy love these but ''Altengrad'' realy ? Germans don't have ''grad'' in any city names like at all and i honestly doubt someone from bavaria would join the navy instead of you know the infantry regiments they provided or the artillery or the cavalry regiments the bavarians were so proud off.
I'm being picky i know and i can overlook the guy from bavaria going to the navy but the city name ''Altengrad'' is just wierd aswell as the first name ''Enos'' not realy a name used in germany at that time period or at all honestly .

Altengrad is a fictional name taken from a Cities Skylines UA-cam series I watch (Name is Actually Altengrad), meaning yes, most likely it's not accurate to a Bavarian city name, but it felt nice tipping the hat for another UA-cam series with great content.
I'm aware about the preference of infantry regiment from Bavaria (Especially at those times), but the thing about the main character joining the navy is because of personal reasons (Mostly father issues, though I haven't covered that very well...), meaning that, although it's unlikely, it's always good having some variety in the Armed Forces.
Lastly, about the name. Yeah... I don't have any points to argue about, you're completely right. But it's a little tic I have, meaning everything I write always has a character named Enos in it, don't ask me why, maybe a personal Easter egg only I enjoy.
I'm glad you're reading or even enjoying my roleplay, really makes my day no matter what, and thanks for the input. For the Kaiser, no matter what!

I've been starting out with just one in my home territory and that seems to work well. It sees the most action. The maintenance from the airbase is nothing compared with the maintenance for the planes. I would like to see a line item added for the planes somewhere.
