I see how in this season Aang is learning what it means to be the Avatar and deal with his guilt/fears before he masters any other element just like Monk Gyatso warned that he should before the massacre.
This also relates to Kitara who had to be on a similar path of stability before teaching Aang as his Master in water bending come season 2.

You may be right, but the problem I have is Aang isn't really dealing with his guilt or fears. He kind of just accepts his role as avatar all too quickly, but then he says he doesn't know what he's doing... but then the next moment he's telling a village he's the avatar and there to help them. He goes back and forth too much and it makes it really unclear what his character arc is. Does he need to overcome guilt or fear? Or did he do that already and just needs to learn avatar stuff? It's like the writers couldn't make up their minds.

  • @Jj82op
    @Jj82op 3 місяці тому +44

I think it's worth noting that he didn't have time to train or learn water bending. He showed up at the South Pole, he goes to the air temple, to Kyoshi Island to learn about the avatar, Omashu, the spirit world, then straight to the North Pole to protect it. In the animated series this was all handled with more freedom, it was mostly just them travelling to learn water bending but they found obstacles in the way. So it's not too wrong if he didn't actually learn anything yet, because they just arrived to the North Pole where he can find a master.
People complaining about Aang being more serious just don't understand that this is also okay, the show is PG13 so of course it would be different. Again, he doesn't have much time to have fun.

    • @hard_candy

All of these arguments are beside the point. Netflix literally had a cheat sheet and still failed the test. This is literally what happened with The Legend of Korra. Bryke were given one season in the beginning with LoK, but after the season was received so well, they were given a second - and then the same thing happened. When Season 2 was received well (albeit not as well as the first) they were then given 3 and 4. The only difference here is Netflix, for some reason, only gave themselves 8 episodes which is why there is literally no B plot.
I don't mind the live-action storyline as it is - I liked where they're going - it's just none of the storylines were fleshed out properly. They didn't give the plot time to breathe.

Didnt have time? Bro we literally had a scene where him and Katara were playing at a river when Ang goes to look how her waterbending is progressing. Just expand THAT scene of him trying to waterbend to train with Katara. Its that simple!
If we jump from point to point in book 3 and 4 just like in book 1, then Im VERY afraid that he wont even learn to earthbend in book 2. Like thats WHY the seasons are called book of water, earth and fire. Because its Ang learning every element while still showing us every country with the respected benders.

The reason Aang was training so hard to master water bending in the cartoon was because Roku warned him of the return of Sozins Comet. There was a very pressing timeline on which he had to master the elements and defeat the firelord.
Smartly, they have removed that timeline as it's impossible to pull off with how quickly the child actors will age throughout the show.
I imagine season 2 will pick up with a time jump having Aang mostly mastered water bending under Kataras training. The return of the comet will likely be revealed to Aang near the beginning of the season which will push him to set off and find an Earth bending teacher.

Aang is not useless in live action Season 1, he has taken out many firebenders with airbending, and that's all he could do in S1 animation too. Just like the animated series, he did not know ANY of the elements at all in any measurable degree in the first Season. Same thing here. He held his own against other benders with airbending just like here. It's just that here, BEFORE the fighting, he is far more cautious, less confident that he can be the Avatar right now that people want him to be despite already being capable, wanting to take every measure to be better. He didn't have anyone to teach him waterbending! Katara was teaching herself through observation, she couldn't do that until they left the North Pole. It's just that in the animation, he didn't express his worry and inadequacy as openly.

I mean aang primarily only uses airbending in book 1 of the animation aswell. He always defaults to his airbending as he is an airbending master. He starts training in waterbending but hes not great at it until book 2. Im ok with him asking the other Avatars for help as it makes sense (he's a scared 12yr old). But here he just wanted to ride off to clear his mind. Only to expand on it and keep him running from the responsibility during this season... it always confused me why Kyoshi accused Aang's running away (her being in his mind). Theres like 7 episodes(make it 8 if you want to count the Jeong Jeong episode but itd a side story thats important for season 2 with Guru Patik) that could be cut from Seasons 1 to make the slower pace to be a bit faster. Not to mention combining episodes isnt that out of the ordinary for netflix avatar, but then Again with bad execution, it leaves other great stories become useless or have little to no significance like the Jet story in the netflix show.
Not to mention WHY EVEN ADD SECRET TUNNEL IN SEASON 1 LIVE ACTION? Thats not even IN season 1 of the cartoon.
Again a LOT of stupid decisions and execution were made. I dont even need a 1:1 rendition, just follow the preexisting formula thats ALREADY THERE but revise it to be fitting on the limitations you have like budget.

I think there are 2 reasons Aang in this show hasn't done any waterbending training. First imho they don't want to step on Katara's progression from novice to master. Second and closely tied to reason one is they have about an hour and a half less showtime to tell the same story. That's Katara and Aang waterbending scroll ("jealousy"), Katara and Aang pulling water from the ground (jet's episode), Katara discovering she has the ability to heal.
Now I think with season 2 they'll have a minor time jump where Katara has taught Aang some moves on they're way to Omashu. If that is the case it'll be a course correction to things done off screen.

So my thoughts on the last two episode.
Episode 6 is probably the BEST Episode of Season 1 so far. They managed to mix some stuff together and make it really work. Everything with Zuko, Ozai and Iroh was done really well. The adaptation of the Blue Beetle was handled well, the action scenes were cool and a big surprise...was the addition of Graphic Novel content. So Avatar: The Search/Graphic Novel Number 2 is the story that explores Zuko and Team Avatar teaming up with Azula to find Zuko and Azula's Mum and Koa's Spirit Mother is introduced in that story and in this episode they make a reference to her via that statue, so that was a cool addition.
Episode 7 was hit and miss. I liked how they rewrote the Princess' ex-boyfriend and made him into a likable guy. In the cartoon, he's pretty unlikable and then he disappears in a joke scene after he tries to attack Zhao and gets knocked overboard and that's the last you see of him. A very pointless character really. But my negative with this episode is pretty much my other negatives with the rest of the season in terms of how Aang hasn't bothered to learn Water-Bending at any point in this season. People are making the excuse that this season isn't called Water. Yet Netflix, when annoucing Season 2 and 3, they had those seasons and Season 1 accompanied by their respected logos which are Water, Earth and Fire. So YES, this Season is based and is meant to be Water. Just because its not referred to Book 1: Water doesn't mean its not about that and for 8 episdoes they never once showcase Aang training which is crazy.
There's also the fact they got rid of the Water-Bending Teacher's connections to Katara and Sokka's Grandmother. Would have been cool to see that connection as well as the importance of Katara's Necklance. They could have even done a quick flashback and introduced a young Hama was it? in it as set-up to what we will hopefully see in Season 3. I did like the addition of Avatar Kurant was it? We never really got to spend anytime with him at all except for a quick appearance and that was it. At least we got something with him here which was cool.
Overall, again this show adaptation is hit and miss. Some of it works, some of it doesn't. The whole water-healing aspect is something that was introduced way eariler in the original show where Aang first tries to learn fire-bending first via Zhao's Fire-Bending Master and burns Katara accidentally in the process which leads to her learning water-healing in the same episode minutes after by accident. I hope we get to see that episode adapted next season.

Aang being less like a kid fits with the overal less childish tone of the live action series. They literally opened the series with showing 95 % of a genocide. And I’m all for that shift in tone.

im on the fence with how they handle the whole betrothal neckalce thing, and hahn, and yue. it felt like it had more cultural significance in the OG than they're giving it here. however, what they did here did work so i'd chalk it up more to a preference with the OG, especially with master paku seeing his necklace to gran gran after his fight with katara.

I would probably disagree with your assessment on how they’re portraying the young. My humble opinion is simple we keep forgetting this is still book 1 He doesn’t learn how to do earth🪨bending till book 2 and Doesn’t learn how to fire🔥bend until book 3. And he only goes into the avatar state when he’s extremely emotional and even then he doesn’t know how to control it. But if you remember correctly, whether he was to learn water bending or not at the end of book one in the final season showdown he hast to go into avatar state to save the northern water nation tribe. And if you remember correctly in book 2 when Kara started teaching and how to water bend. So he is desperate, but he always used his abilities as an Airbender to get out of situations as well as having his friends with him. That’s how I remembered it watched the cartoon growing up when I was a little kid and I’ve always been a fan of avatar…. You still have one more episode to go, which I think you will see how it ties in to what you’re saying now. Not giving any spoilers, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

apart from whole original animation, adaptation things and all, it is just soo dumb to not even show that aang can bend any other element beside air in whole show. like they keep saying avatar is the master of all elements! only avatar can bend all elements! and all but not even once this boy did that except last episode lol. even someone who don't know about original can question is aang really the avatar or not lmao
and btw even a little tiny bit interection with water would do it you know, he is the avatar after all, he doesn't even need anyone for being able to move a little water, in cartoon he was making big waves with his first ever water bending they could have show something like that and everyone would be okay with that

I'm fine with Aang being more serious, but the problem comes when they suck out all the heart and soul from the character. They literally make him serious nearly every second he's on screen. A real 12 year old would not act that way all the time. There has to be a balance

My only gripe about the live-action is the pacing and that sort of kinda bleeds into Aang not waterbending. Like Aang in the animated series could comfortably defend himself with just water alone at the end of Book One, but for some reason they decide to cut out all of his waterbending training. Why? Like, make that make sense.
I can see the story they're trying to tell, and I like it, but they move on so quickly.

Yeah i totally get Jens rant at the end there. She might not realize it but theyve been downplaying Aangs capability as a powerful bender since Kyoshi Island.
Remember when its almost primarily Aang that fend off the Fire Nation soldiers in the cartoon? Him man handling Zuko with Kyoshi Warrior fans? Well, get a hold of this Netflix chump. Why need Aang when he can just turn into Kyoshi HERSELF!!! Oh, Aang is a master AIRBENDER WITH TATTOOS OF A MASTER??? Well lets see him get kicked in the stomach in the live action by a novice Zuko who intentionally nerfed himself by NOT firebending to avoid suspicion in Omashu!!! Note that Netflix Aang did NOT have to NOT airbend.
So yes Jen, they've been messing up Aangs capabilities

  • @parmisiguess
    @parmisiguess 3 місяці тому

yeah him not learning any water bending in book 1 was so weird for me. i really liked the live action but this change was just not good at all. like how is aang just gonna focus on learning earth bending in season 2 when he also has so learn water bending? 🤦🏻‍♀️ not to mention, they have less access to water in book 2 (since they’re in the earth kingdom) than they did in book 1. it just doesn’t make sense why they didn’t make him learn it in the north or with katara. going to the north where all the masters are was for that EXACT reason but they just changed it to aang having a vision and preventing a war instead, which was not the main point of book 1 at all

  • @DarkEnv2

I really don’t like how they’ve portrayed Katara and Sokka’s dad in the live action. Sokka and Hakoda were like mirror images of each other sharing similarities with their ingenuity and humor and he was a good father to his children overall. In the live action they make him seem like a dick.

Idk I feel like they’re trying to find some personal conflict within him. Since they changed him from him being sexist to not from the animated show. Aang doesn't do a single bit of Waterbending in this season. Not one time. He doesn't actively bend a single drop of water. It's really disappointing because they made him too serious. "I have to get to the Northern Water Tribe and warn them about the Fire Nation attack!" (which they already know about) and he never once thinks about finding a Waterbending trainer there, nor do we see him train with Paku. It's really annoying.
