Fun fact: the actor who plays prince zuko his name is Dallas Lui. I actually trained with him years ago. He trained at my dad’s martial arts school for a few years and got his black belt with us. He was always competing in these crazy flip battles and is a multi world champ winning multiple competitions in the martial arts competitive scene beating some of the best in the world at what they do

He was in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings as Ruihua, Katy's brother.
@@Mangolite yes he was in that as well. He came by my dad’s martial arts school shortly after that movie came out and told us about being apart of the avatar so I knew about it for a while.It’s so cool to see him grow up and know him before all this

Pretty much agree with all your takes at the end, hoping the acting from the kids gets a little bit better. Nothing has been so bad that it's taking away from enjoying this show so far (only watched the 1st episode as of typing this)

Yeah. Flying is a very special skill that I won't spoil in case they ever decide to watch Korra but the 2 times we see Aang in the air without his glider the first time he falling and basically just slows his fall and manoeuvres around while doing that. The second time, he's using the wind funnel like we see him do a bunch of times in the animation.
9:28 Yeah, the Fire Nation pretty much pulled an Order 66 on the Air Nomads.
It’s funny you say that because I felt like I was watching the Star Wars prequel trilogy during the first 20 minutes of episode 1. Complete with its own Jedi counsel scene

It was a bumpy ride for me in the first little bit. At a certain point you can see that the entire cast sort of finds their footing and gets comfortable in their characters' skin. There is still the issue of "young actor syndrome" here and there, but it gets better.
By the time I finished episode 6, I was a snotty teary mess, and I'm a 46 year old grown man. Like the changes to structure or don't. That's all preference. But make no mistake! The heart and soul of ATLA is ABSOLUTELY here, and it's amazing!
Agree, there is a few issues here and there, but overall it's watchable, i only watched 2 episodes yet, but I can already tell, they have some respect for original animated show. Kids as actors will always be a problem, so I try really hard to ignore it. And I have some mixed feelings about storyline changes already, some I really like, the first avatar state in ruins of old air tample was much better imo, makes more sense then this whole family bs with Katara, but some i genually don't understand, like why Zuko's ship wasn't damaged, it makes more sense to have to repair it and have a meeting with Jao (I don't know how to spell his name in english, sorry).
Oveall so far i'm more then ok with this show, I'm not sure that I needed live action of Avatar tho, but that a other topic i think. Sorry for my english Btw😅
UPD: I watched a few more... Urgh, maybe my first impression was a mistake. They butchered every character, and every development possible, IDK, but literally episode 3 is already a complete BS, while first 2 is ok
I have never understood the vague critique on young actors. You have children acting like children. I would worry more about a child who has the life experiences to pull from to act the way people say they want to see on screen. The fact that good child actors is so rare shows its likely the adults fault. Either director, acting teacher, critic , or audience.

@@Dryltd it isn't that they "act like children". Adults have "young actor syndrome". It's a matter of experience, and children, by nature, don't have it. I mean, Holden literally explains it in the reaction. Acting is a muscle memory. It is like playing an instrument. Even Eddie Van-Halen had a time when he wasn't good at guitar.
Edit: I will add this. What you mention is precicely the reason most of us (who are not bandwagon haters/lovers) try to give kids a break on it. We try to look at the potential of the young actor's to grow. We literally try to pick out scenes where they nail it and genuinely emote.

Acting isn't like playing an instrument. Kids can play guitar real good. What I hear from the critique using your analogy would be Eddie Van-Halen playing like a kid play like they are good at guitar but aren't. And failing to sell the audience on that.
But I tend to increase my criticism the longer actors have been in the game. So even I would sound unfair at times.
No, I don't think he's actually "flying.". You can see that Aang is just bending the air around him as he floats. It's the air that's moving, not Aang. But I can see how they may have made it LOOK.

I'm on the same wavelength as you guys. The visuals, CGI, Art Direction, and Fight Choreography are all excellent; much better than the Shyamalan movie and as good as I could have hoped for in any live action adaptation for streaming. The overall story choices are interesting and, honestly, welcome; I don't want a shot for shot remake. The weakest links are the writing and the acting, which are hit and miss. My hope for the future of the series is that these weaknesses are resolved with time as the writers settle into the story they want to tell and the actors settle into the characters they are portraying. Solid 8/10. Not quite great, but definitely good.
I thought it was a great start; they now know what to fix for season 2 and 3. The acting was okay, the dialogue was the primary issue; just felt a bit stilted and they really leaned into telling rather than showing for the exposition, primarily Aang’s monologue with Appa at the start, but if they can fix it for future seasons then I am 100% in.
They've done well, everyone does a great job. Netflix have consolidated a few storylines into each other but they made it work. Episode 4 had me crying.

I enjoyed it for what it is. Battling the old ATLA fan in me wanting certain aspects to be present that reasonably could have been in a live action format is trying, ATLA is one of the greatest shows of all time in general and is receiving an adaptation 17 years after it stopped airing for a reason
As avatars official number 1 fan of all time i give this show a 6.9/10 after finishing it. Curious to see how there going to do season 2 since they covered some plot from season 2 into 1. A Mixed bag is definitely the perfect words for the show. Theres so much that i loved, theres some things i was disappointed about and more things I nitpicked at the whole time.
Okay so, I have seen a few different reactions make the same statement about why he didn't just get up and get in the ostrich horse, or why he didn't just put the wall behind him and run. But then I thought about the context of the entire situation. The reason he blocked the alley a chose to stay was to give his ally time to escape. If he had gotten on the mount then they'd BOTH be pursued and BOTH could possibly be captured. By staying behind and blocking the alley, he gave his partner time while fighting the Firebenders. They'd be too busy fighting him to follow the other guy. Also the comet is overhead. Firebenders are a great deal more powerful, so that flimsy wall wouldn't REALLY slow them down that much.
omg you guys, finally! Everyone and their mother have been releasing their reactions to this and all I've been waiting for is yours. I'm still on episode 3 going on 4. Let's do this! It's not perfect but it's close, really close. I love how the changes made in the storyline for the show to work, some of them are work far better (which makes sense as they know where all characters go from the first episode to the final).
4 and 5 are.. hard to watch for me.. maybe that’s just me though
You know if it was realistic there would be a whole theme park with tour guides at the air temple. "If you look here to your left, you can see that this house was exploded in the initial assault. And look, these airbenders died in their sleep! And look here, we don't know what they used this big building for, but boy it was sure torched real bad! Too bad they couldn't save the children. Now if you'll follow me, we'll go visit the grand hall and then the avatar statues. There's a big door no one was able to open, so we just dug the wall out."
I totally agree with both of your views on this episode. Aang remembers me of myself when I was doing school plays at his age. Holden is spot on on his analysis as child actors try to remember the lines and the tone more than living and expressing an emotion. Mostly because at that age, you do not usually have enough life experience to reach into the emotion and simulate it.
Still, this episode took me by surprise about how good it was. I love that they did not recreate the show 100%, but still care enough to shuffle it in a way that is interesting and make me wonder what will come next. Yet, this is based on a teenagers-aimed cartoon and it shows in the plot but we accept it and the quality of the work into the world building in live action makes us forget its flaws.
Neat to see a more "adult" take with on screen deaths and binding that seem to hurt!
So to resume, after the cold open, I could have pressed stop and it would have already been better than the live action movie :D

i feel like if you’re willing to go into it with an open mind and not expect a 1:1 you will indeed enjoy it. Obviously some things I wasn’t on par with but I didn’t let it ruin my watching experience.
Same, my only major gripe was king bumi I feel like they 180’d his character but kept his humor as like a wrapper over I can’t really explain it.
@@geminiblade Agreed, I can’t deny that Bumi was very different this time around. But see it this way: Not only it fits the tone and message of the show about Aang winning with the help of his friends, but it would’ve been weird to have an episode of Bumi teaching Aang to be a “mad genius” through cartoony challenges in the middle of all the chaos that was already happening in Omashu. I think it’s acceptable
I agree,I've seen both people hating and liking it. It really depends on how open you are to the changes. I love it and hope we get a season 2.
At least this kid isn't drooling all the time, so he at least has one up on the last live action version. lol.

I'm only two episodes in myself so far, the show hasn't blown my socks off yet like the One Piece adaptation did, but it's looking good, gonna finish it when I get the chance.
That’s how I feel, the first episode of one piece wasn’t amazing but by episode 2 I was hooked. I do not have the same feeling for this show. I honestly stopped but I might continue with these guys haha
Yeah One piece was the best. The yu yu hakusho was decent too but atla felt the same with the rushed pacing at times. I felt like yuyu needed more explaining while atla I needed less.
We all need to remember that season 1 of the animation isn't exactly peak writing (Book 2+3 is where it's at). For me this series is a solid 7/10 lots i liked and just a couple things I don't like. I think a lot of people would hate this show no matter what just because they are so nostalgic when it comes to the animation. 😊
21:22 - Holden isn't wrong about Sokka and Zuko being "pretend" tough guys, but I believe it's absolutely intentional. Because both characters either think more of themselves (Zuko) or think they have to measure up (both of them) to an impossible standard. That's something that both characters have to learn to overcome.
The kid is like 12 and his first scenes are "learns he is the avatar" and then he has a monologue after. I think we're being very harsh on him as an actor. The whole concept of "learning you're the avatar" is completely foreign to every single one of us, there is no real life equivalent. I'm impressed that he pulled it off as well as he did.
The acting is 10 billion times better than the M. Night Shyamalan movie but the child acting definitely isnt great in this one either. Not enough for it to be ruined for me but it is something I noticed. The bending and scenery looks absolutely fantastic!
And Holden, you are correct that a lot of children do have that quick talking pattern you mentioned however I will say i think that actually works to Aang's benefit this time because Aang also talked pretty quickly in the animated show so I can forgive that detail.
I really like this. I didn’t grow up with this show. I was quite a bit older. But in the two episodes, I have seen, I found that they told the story in a manner that survey new to the franchise it easily follow. Plus the visuals for a Netflix series looks incredible.
Holden has the most hilarious bad joke camera stares. I really busted up at that one.

I've only watched episodes 1-3 and and I agree with a lot of your statements that the visual effects are overall really great. The scenery is nearly perfect and my only critique if I had to give one is the child acting. But I'm really trying hard not to blame them. It's a big responsibility but I only find myself cringing on a few lines. And how they deliver it like they're just reading off a script.
Wow, I am a big fan of the original animated series, and I loved the Netflix adaptation. I've watched it already few times, and it's amazing! I fell in love with this beautiful series. Fantastic live-action adaptation! I can't wait for the next season! Love the action, adventure, drama, the emotional twist, it brought me to tears, the fantasy, and comedy-all in one! Amazing cinematography, amazing special effects, those animals, spirit animals just amazing, and their powers. The visuals look great and the backgrounds look fantastic! I love their costumes, which are very detailed, elaborate, and very impressive! It definitely paid homage to the original. They're all amazing! Gordon is a brilliant, fantastic actor for his young age, and he is so cute; he has a million-dollar smile too. Dallas is a versatile actor, he's amazing actor. Kiawentiio and Ian are amazing too. Paul, and Daniel are very good too. I love the casting, I love the characters, they all did a great job. Congratulations! This is the best live-action adaptation! ♥️
Aang wasn't flying he was air bending similar to in the show when they would make wind tornadoes under themselves to lift off the ground. It's just not as defined as it is in the animation.

you guys should definitely watch the legend of korra next! This show uses some elements of that series. Overall I really liked her story. You can really tell her series is for a older watcher that ATLA was. Season 3 and 4 are the best, so don't get worried after seeing the fist two.
I don't see anything wrong with Gordon Cormier as Aang, he truly captured the essence of the character and being a goofy kid, that is something the movie version lacks, in the movie he is overly serious and boring. Gordon Cormier on the other hand got better in his acting and improved in the later episodes
I love Jen’s shirt. There is a specific phrase that Q says that I don’t wanna repeat. But it makes me laugh. He mispronounces a specific type of mushroom…that’s all I’m saying. 😂
I'm going back right now and watching all your "My Wife Watches" episodes on the animated series. I have to compare the reactions. So weird, I know lol but it will also refresh my memory to compare the new show to
I've watched up to Episode 6 and this show takes alot of liberties so far. It does some stuff well and I do like how it merges some episodes together to tell a familiar or new story but some characters feel ruined because of changes in personality and the show kinda gets rid of all the goofy fun stuff and makes it more dark and depressing. Again, some of it works and some of it doesn't. I do like the Easter Eggs and references to things to come in later seasons and especially a tie-in to one of the Graphic Novels which was unexpected but cool to see considering its connection to a element in this show. So far I'm 50/50 on this. Its miles better than the film that's for sure. But it's still flawed.

I have a feeling I know a particular character you're referring to that was a few episodes in which merged some characters from one episode and one from another...and they made the one a cruel/mean sort of crazy and not the fun/goofy type. And the makeup was distracting as well. I agree that some of it works and some doesn't because I liked a few creative liberties, but not all.
I agree on the characters. I just finished and some characters are done extremely well, mainly Iroh and Zuko imo. Others like Bumi and Roku I think they took liberties with and made very likable characters into very unlikely characters. And then Suki is the only one that I think they just missed the mark on what they were trying to do, mainly because they took away the thing that actually gives her and Sokkas relationship and organic feel. That’s why Sokka had to be sexist. He has to be humbled and come to Suki for training. That causes Suki to be impressed with him and begins their relationship. It felt very forced to me without this.

As a massive fan of the animated show, I went into this with a very open mind. Now on the plus side this is waaaaaaay better than the movie we got back in 2010. But I feel mixed on this iteration. There are things that are really good and well done and there are things I feel were mishandled or could have been a lot better. I really do hope we get Book 2 and that they can improve on what they’ve done.
With how the "die-hard" fans have reacted they wont bother making a sequel.

I have watched the first 3 episodes so far. As an original fan who watched it as a kid back when it first came out, I was somewhat wary but excited. The first episode was ROUGH. The CGI and bending was really good, and I think the actors are really well cast. But it suffers from a pretty egregious info-dump, and the pacing was oddly fast. I think the inclusion of the Air Nomad genocide was unnecessary and took up a lot of time that otherwise could have been spent building up the three leads' relationship. I could go on with my critiques, but I do feel like there was a lot of good too.
That being said, without spoilers, episode 2 was so much better imo. And episode 3 was actually really awesome, and the changes they made were very well-done. I will also say that there is an exceptional martial arts fight to look forward to in episode 3.
All in all, I'm excited to continue watching it. Especially after the recovery in episode 2 & 3.

I don’t take it as him flying without his glider in the first scene he’s kinda falling slowly using air bending and in the second scene it seems like he’s doing a little air tornado you just obviously can’t see the tornado as well in live action cuz he’s spinning Y’know

I have already seen the love and hate reactions/comments about this series already and I myself really like this series and I think it looks great :). Comes back to what I have always said, the individual watching is either going to like it or hate it but that is okay because that is all that matters. I'm digging the show. I'm ok with some of the changes they're making. I understand that they have to consolidate some of the episodes together, and they're actually doing a good job with it. I watched 6 episodes last night.
I don't like how they did Bumi (no spoilers) and I don't like that everyone can just fly now. Aang just casually flies, and Firebenders do too. We've seen it briefly in the anime, but it's more of a short duration thrust forward than actual flight. Azula does it a few times to enhance her jumps, or when she's falling to push herself toward something she can catch herself with.
But we don't see actual firebending flight until Ozai in the last battle. (And Jeong Jeong. But they were both commit enhanced.)

Aang doesn't fly, he floats some, and when jumping from height he falls with style. But he can't actually fly without his glider.
@@akasarahsmom Except he did here. In the original anime he falls with style. But in this show, in the first episode, he literally flies up without his glider to call Appa. Just like Storm from the X-men. Just using wind to make him fly. And I'm not a fan of that.
He lifts himself up to call for appa with a tornado type air burst... that's why he was twirling around and around in the same spot before he fell (with style) back to the ground. He doesn't actually fly without his glider.

Imo since the original really went out of its way to have distinct, recognizable and very authentic and traditional martial arts forms the way each type of bender fought, this shouldve been approached as a more martial arts type of film in the sense that ATLA was

To be fair, M. Night`s film was bad but people get hung up on the pronunciations when if you watch the Asian and Latin American airings of the show, they used the same pronunciations M. Night used.
The beginnings of a new show is bound to be bumpy. A live action adaptation is going to be even bumpier. I'm willing to give it a season to work out the kinks.
Seinfeld and Friends took time to develop. Even ATLA took some time to grab both the kids and adults.

The best way to get a child actor look great acting is to have the kid be motion. Like the stand still when he is talking to Gyatso next to Avatar Yangchen. Imagine if he was walking around or petting appa. It allows users to look at the area/landscape while also making the kid feel more natural talking. Standing still makes them uncomfortable. Especially since kids have tons of energy.
Went back and watched a few clips of the animated show. The live action aang and the animated one spoke the same. Animated had just a little more base in his voice

I hope they eventually get around to doing a reaction to the One Piece live action. I think they would both really enjoy it since it's so accessible to non fans.
Holden, if its any consolation, I think the heated discussion comment was pretty good.
I'm 50/50 on the show. I don't mind the bad acting from the kids or some of the goody effects, the stuff I dislike is how some characters are sidelined or done badly in favour of others, and some of the mish mashing they did with episodes (especially including some book 2 stuff). I hope they continue with all three books and it gives everyone the opportunity to improve. At the end of the last episode I wasn't all that disappointed, just missed some of the stuff they cut from the original show.
Also I have to say I think the screen you watch this live action series on can change how one may feel about certain scenes. For example I had no clue those were digital people in that recreation of the intro and I had no trouble with the darkness of those scenes in this first episode.
Also I didn’t feel line the CGI looked bad at all. But when I rewatched the same episodes with a friend on her tv I noticed they were digital humans and I saw just a tiny bit of that CGI look to certain parts of certain scenes. But even still I don’t think it deserves the level of hate some are giving them for it.
I just think that some people are just impossible to please and have made up their minds already and nit pick every little thing. Not that people can’t or shouldn’t be critical…but I think a lot of people online are sooo extra with their negativity when it comes to certain things.

Hey guys love your reviews and loved this one too ! Thanks for understanding about the child acting, a lot of people are saying that it makes the show as bad as the movie 💀💀💀. But as you said, it’s what you should expect sometimes from child actors, even though there are a lot of really good ones out there too. I liked the fact that they gave us some kind of prequel scenes about some of the storylines too, and that’s another thing that people are iffy about, they don’t like the fact that they added those « prequel » scenes to the story, and they basically want a shot for shot 😂 (which is kinda stupid imo)

I thought the series was good, yes a few changes were strange but not that bad and the actor for Aang was really good. I thought almost all the actors were good. I give the series a 6.5/10

Honestly...I consider this series MORE for people that have NEVER seen an episode of the Cartoon.
It is meant to Grow the Audience of the Franchise...not satisfy the current Audience.
With that in mind...I am going to rewatch the cartoon for the xxth time. lol
finished the show and personally i liked their spin on it…they made it flow pretty well..katara could have been much better acting wise tbh…she lacked passion and emotion..everyone else was pretty spot on…it felt like avatar for me snd thats what i wanted to feel…the finale was a visual spectacle really well done overall id give it like a 7.5 or 8
I thought that writing was really good, especially compared to M Night’s. But yea, the acting is a bit rough, and hard to overlook.
I think the guy playing Zuko is missing Zoko's rage. And I don't really like the guy playing Iroh. I don't really know how to put it. But he's missing that something that Iroh has
yeah, with Adult Voice Actors doing voices for young Characters in animated Series there is perfect natural emotion speech flow but when it comes to real life kid Actors being the characters the natural emotion speech flow is very wonky 40-60% of the time. mainly because adults are more veteran in delivering the right level emotion when needed then children who truly barely understands the hardships of life.
On last episode, honestly there are some things I kinda don’t like but other than those small things I think it’s great. It’s definitely better than M. Nights’ version in my opinion
I’ve watched the whole series. Aang’s acting in the beginning is abit off, but it does improve abit throughout the series.

Giving Aang the ability to fly right out the gate was... a choice. I don't see the live action making it to Korra but it certainly takes the wind out of Zaheer's sails a bit lol
The kid actor did great in my opinion but to each its own
Really hope to see you guys watch Korra. It's a bit more mature and expands the ATLA world in some cool ways
Appa worked out at the gym to get back in shape for the show - he had let himself go a bit after the animated series ended 🐵
Its alright for what it is overall id give it a 7 out of 10, not somthing I would rewatch like the animation but it has some cool moments, loved the kyoshi fight. Somthing I couldn't stand was some of the coloring in scenes. Especially the moon being killed it gave me a head ache
i just watched this episode before i watched your reaction. im just going for the ride with mixed aspects of expectations. still already better than the live action movie. and seeing the battle between the air nomads and the fire nation at that instance was a good input of story. it was never shown before
