I get a polygamous UN-Makeover while catching up with Sam's sister Tephi!
Tephi looks much happier and almost glowing in this video. I don’t recall how long ago the last video was but she’s almost a whole new person. She seems like such a beautiful (inside and out), sweet lady!
I agree she's glowing and looks to be living her best life!! I'm here for it!
I agree, her energy seems so much lighter and happier in this video! Good for her, she seems like a sweet woman
Yes!! Gorgeous ladies, inside and out! And that color is so pretty on Tephi!
My thoughts exactly!
The last video was from March 2021. She does look more comfortable and happy. Beautiful young woman.
TEPHI IS BLOWNG My mind! She could make BIG bucks in the braiding world. There have got to be parents willing to pay big bucks for their kids proms or dance recitals! She's seriously talented. Pouf notwithstanding.
Not to mention her dress making skills. Her fine detail work on all the loops for the buttons….wow!
I would buy anything they sell lol
That braid is PHENOMENAL! I was so glad we got to see the back! Proms and weddings…
Tephi has mad skills! NGL Melissa looks even more beautiful than usual with her hair like that but ofc don't want to belittle the trauma that FLDS women experience/d.
So happy she left too..Beautiful woman!
I realize that a prairie dress has other meanings to y’all, but I would just like to take a moment to appreciate that craftsmanship. It’s a very beautifully-made dress!!!
So many of their dresses are very detailed, even when they said they had to sew them very fast. Susch talent. The hair pounds are hideous however. Remind me of guys in the 50s times ten. So unflattering.
Yes! It’s beautiful. People pay good money to have clothes hand made.
Would love to know how to braid like that I can French braid but have never done a double French braid.
Amazing the dress fits her perfectly!
This was fun! Im ex-FLDS and this stirred up so many memories! In our church community, people used to pay me to comb their hair for special occasions like weddings, graduations, funerals, programs, dances, photoshoots etc etc. Many of those things were done away with during Warren's reign, but I actually was asked to go to Rulon Jeffs' home and train his wives how to comb and "pouf" their hair. Crazy experiences! Tephi did great!
I think “the higher the hair the closer to heaven” comes from Dolly Parton 😂
In my area it’s a Pentecostal hair saying.
That’s what thought when I heard it, it’s a ‘Dolly saying’ and in my head I hear it in what I, as an ignorant Scot, think of as a ‘Deep South’ accent. ❤
1. Yes, it's called a rat-tailed comb to everyone else, too 😉
2. The workmanship on that dress is amazing! Good job Tephi! Don't shelf your sewing talent forever. It's a dying art out here in the "regular" world. Teach others! Obviously, I don't mean making prairie dresses. 😊😂
❤️
in Holland we call it a punt-kam (point comb)
Tephi is so skilled in braiding. Plus her tailoring skills! I feel like these two things could be quite marketable if combined (and *if* she wants!). Weddings? Pageants? Theater productions?
Especially if she got a diploma in hairdressing/styling and or makeup....
" I don't know if I could go out on the town with just one woman though, if you're dressed like that!" Very funny, Sam!
I love Sam’s commentary in the background on how hair gets done 🤣 “ooo back combing…” 🤣
It also really shows how separated they kept the boys and girls. He lived with a ton of sisters and had no idea.
Made me laugh. My husband’s sisters were all in pageants and dancers and such, so he is very in the know about this stuff, but it was so innocent in humorous to hear him so unaware.
Thinking about when the FLDS separated from the main LDS, I wonder if the poof is a holdover from fashionable hair of that time? In the 1890's and early aughts, bouffant, pompadour, and other front-heavy styles were very popular with women, to help visually balance out against the large sleeves and wide skirts that were also considered fashionable at the time.
I truly love the episodes you did with Tephi! She sounds like the sister most little girls always wanted - kind, funny, a little bit rebellious, and quietly but firmly confident. Plus she’s so beautiful and extremely talented with hair styling and sewing! How amazing that she got out and forged her own life for herself!! I hope that she is able to find a love that will honor and cherish her and also help her further her own goals and aspirations
All those layers of clothing must have made A LOT of laundry!!
I'm a professional stitcher, I would love to get a look inside that dress! It's obviously very well made. I'm super curious about the finishing techniques Tephi used. Is it lined? Did you have sergers/overlock machines, or did you use more traditional methods for finishing raw edges? To me, the only thing about its design that marks it as distinctly FLDS is the pleated sleeve caps. That's a detail you just don't see very often in modern clothing. Even in cottagecore or "prairie" dresses, puff sleeves are usually gathered instead of pleated. Also, I just want to take a moment to appreciate how immaculately well ironed it is. It's not easy to press a garment that has been washed and worn so that it looks brand new, but somehow Tephi has managed it. Very impressive, and I hope that dress makes its way into a museum collection someday.
Im so curious too
The lower neckline, button detailing, and more fitted bodice and waistline makes a huge difference. The shoulders seem better fitted, too. I’ve noticed a lot if flds dresses are way too wide in the shoulder.
What I’m curious about is the fabric. So many of the dresses look like thick stiff poly cotton blend, which sounds unbearably hot, so would be relieved to be wrong about that. This one looks like it has a slightly softer, more drapey hand
Tephi could totally make it as a seamstress or a hairdresser! Those braids were amazing. I was never even able to manage a single french braid when I had long hair. That hairstyle was very impressive. And the quality of that dress was fantastic. My aunt is a seamstress and we grew up making some of our own clothes out of financial necessity, and none of us have ever made something as good quality as that dress.
The dress was exquisitely made. That takes skill. Hair was great too. I french braided my daughter's hair every day for school, and to this day if I'm ever sitting behind a woman in a theatre or something I have to resist the urge to start braiding the hair of the woman in front of me. Not polygamist, just liked french braids and braided so often it became a reflex.
I love having my hair braided, what shows are you going to next 😅
I had a very strong feeling watching this that Tephi's dress is going to be in a museum someday. That may sound pie-in-the-sky but I'm quite serious. This is going to go down as a very important (albeit very niche) chapter of American religious history, and that is going to be one of the few pieces that the "gentile world" can save. It is an absolutely fabulous handmade dress (very impressive work Tephi) and even today it could go on exhibit with how much attention the FLDS is getting.
THIS was so much fun to watch. Glad to have Sam's perspective here, too! The REAL gem in this is your charming relationships, easy conversations, and loving tenderness towards each other. Love all of your vids. Keep up the amazing information. Anyone with even slight cult-ness growing up appreciates your experiences. Hugs. THIS WAS DELIGHTFUL! Glad you are not "out there" anymore.
Aww thank you so much!!
13:30 "rat tail comb" is the mainstream name that I know that tool by too
Please have Tephi in your videos more often. I just love her. ❤️ she is just wonderful. Beautiful inside and out.
So good to see Tephi again! She’s so beautiful and talented. My hand cramps within 5 seconds of braiding. The whole style is pretty trippy (especially all together with the dress) but those braid skills would do good work on modern styles! Thank for your sharing with us and letting us join in.
Thanks for watching!
I actually love that dress.. it looks so early 20th century vintage! With a different hairstyle and without the FLDS context, I'd totally wear it
I worked as a nurse in the Middle East and women there also had to wear full dress in the water. Frustrates me when US people degrade another country when we have much of the same thing going on in the States.
I met so many lovely people there, travel is truly a cute for prejudice.
Oh my goodness, as a hairstylist, I have to say that braid style is very impressive! And Tephi looks absolutely radiant! Her hair style and color are amazing and she looks so great in that sweater!
I was cracking up over Sam being triggered seeing Melissa all fixed up like that. I can totally understand why!
The talent it took to sew that dress is amazing. It really looks well made and the color is so nice too!
Oh, I was also going to say... Melissa, as a Mormon, didn't you also have to wear (under) garments? Just not as full coverage? I used to work with a Mormon who wore garments.
I agree! Tephi you have a terrific style. Love the hair and sweater/jean combo.
(Melissa) @Sarah Yes, Mormons do wear under garments, but you don't start wearing them until after you go through the temple for the first time. They are two pieces and made out of comfortable, breathable material, so it is not nearly as restrictive. =)
As a hairstylist it’s generally considered that with the height at the front (the poof) and structuring the braid certain ways gives the appearance of a “perfect” or “symmetrical” oval shape (generally considered ideal because oval shaped faces are ”perfect”)
I can't believe your family didn't have hair dryers! Wow. It's fascinating how different your family was from mine. We had hair dryers, straighteners, and curling irons. All the fun stuff. The mothers used them, and then, of course, we did. I'm pretty sure even my father uses a hair dryer on his hair!
You've got me thinking, and I think you're right about the black dresses. I can't remember anyone wearing a truly black dress. We did wear dark colors, even very dark grays. Like a charcoal color. Navy was a favorite. And dark purples. I wasn't real fond of pastels, and almost only wore them on Sundays. (And even sometimes then I would wear dark purple to church, like the color of the dress Melissa wears here)
Interesting thing about the word "fun" is that we were never told not to say it. Uncle Fred didn't care for the word, and everybody trying to out-righteous each other scrambled all over each other trying to say "enjoyment" and appear more enlightened or whatever. People could be crazy. Haha.
This was amazing and I'm glad it wasn’t too triggering for Tephi and Sam. Regarding the purpose of the poof, quite awhile ago when the raid happened and Warren Jeff’s was arrested, I found on UA-cam a series of videos that seemed to be made by the FLDS teaching how to style hair and they were saying the poof was to make the face more oval shaped which is the perfect shape or something like that. Anyway, I'm enjoying your videos and want to thank Sam and Tephi for sharing what life was like for them.
Tephi, looks fabulous! She’s glowing and what an awesome smile! What’s funny about this conversation, is that the hair terms Tephi uses are the same one’s my Mom, who was born in the 30’s, would have used. She also tapped her side curls, back combed her hair, and used a rat tail comb. Lol.
It blows my mind that Sam and Tephi are only half siblings! They look more alike than most full siblings I know! If Tephi did an online hair class, I would definitely take it. My hair is hip length and my braids, despite being braided all the time for 30 years, do not match Tephi being rusty lol! Great video!! Is that dress polyester? I’m sweating just looking at it
Yea they have the same eyes and nose.
The braid is AMAZING! Her sewing skills are also amazing. Poor Sam. He was tripping!
There is actually hair tape. 😊 Also, it was good to see Tephie again! She is great at braiding! I’m a hairdresser, braiding and women’s hair is not my best skill. I am much better at men’s haircuts. Maybe she should go to cosmetology school!
All of the layers of clothes makes me feel like having an anxiety attack just thinking about it!!
Newbie here 😊..I have been binge watching your channel for a couple of weeks and I have been enjoying your honesty and commitment to each other..I can relate a little to the hair and clothing situation because my parents raised me in the Apostolic church..I can remember from around the age of 5 until I rebelled at around 15 not being allowed to wear pants or cut my hair because both are considered a huge sin that will keep you from going to Heaven .. Naturally as I entered my teens I started to want to cut my hair and wear make-up ( another huge sin) and even something as innocent as getting your ears pierced was evil 🤨..My parents finally gave into the pants situation the summer before I started high school..I remember my mom telling me I would have to buy them myself because she wouldn't be responsible for my salvation..I threw a wrench in that by telling her my best friend that lived across the street agreed to give me a couple of her jeans until I could get a part time job..I can still remember the absolute freedom the first time I put on blue jeans and I went roller skating in them..I actually felt like one of the cool girls that afternoon and after that my parents started to lift the ban because they realized my relationship with God was between him and me..Sadly I still have an auntie that is still living in that bondage to the point she will not braid her hair or even snip the ends..I know the verse in the Bible says that a female should not wear man apparel but my question has always been why pants? because they wore gowns back then and the zipper was not invented until 100s of yrs later ..Thank God I wasn't tied down to polygamy I just can't even imagine what that must have been like as an only child..I can even remember being angry because my parents stopped putting up a Christmas tree because that was a sin also 🤨..Sorry for my long rant but I just wanted to share the fact that I can relate just a tiny fraction to your experience growing up.. Anyway take care and I will continue watching your video catalog until I catch up to the present..
I was a hair braiding person for years. We called that a peripheral braid. You could pull it back, lace it together with ribbon too. The pouf is like a cross between eighties hair and old lady hair (my grandmother was a hairdresser, and she always wore her hair that way!)
Just loved the hair, especially braiding. I never seen that design before. It is beautiful. Thank you for letting me have a glimpse of your talent.
Sam learning all this stuff about hairstyling behind the camera is so adorable! 😂
OMGOSH I just about lost it when you appeared in the prairie dress. So brave and fun to watch the process. Thank you for taking us along with you
Thank you so much for watching!
Tephi is so talented that hair is beautiful. She sewing skills are phenomenal the attention to detail makes this dress top notch, makes me miss the clothes of my childhood.
I love how you guys interact with each other, it's so obvious you have a great relationship and get along so well! Tephi is so sweet and laid back, I love her calm and gentle demeanor. This was such a fun video!
Tephi - if you can become so talented at braids and sewing with so many restrictions in place, i cant even imagine how high youll soar when you find something youre truly passionate about. Youre incredible ❤
I confess I totally love Tefi's dress, and I'm a denim jeans fanatic! I'm 79 and most women in the 1940's and 50's wore dresses all the time. I remember older women wearing that tailored look (if not the same length) every day.
That hairstyle is a work of art and the dress is beautifully made. There is so much love between you all.
I'm not someone who cares for the latest styles and fads, and I have always loved prairie skirts and dresses. It's too bad they have such a negative connection. I love you guys and your sister...you seem to be such genuine, open, respectful, positive people. Thanks for sharing! 😊 Your stories are fascinating.
Wear what you want! I wear 1930s-40s clothing on a daily basis and that dress looks like a perfectly acceptable dress I’d wear to church in spring or fall. The hair terminology is also similar! Even the underwear is just an old pre-1920s style that used to be common everywhere- in fact, one gal who was a teen in the WWII era told me she used to borrow her mother’s “combinations” even in that era! :)
Thank you for sharing. I love your videos. The term combing your hair means the same thing in southern black culture. I’ve noticed many similarities with my southern black culture in your videos. Not polygamy, but a lot of phrases mainly. I find that so intriguing, since it seems like the two cultures wouldn’t really interact with each other. I wonder how there came to be so many similarities in phrases we use, etc.
Believe me, as a mother of a bride having a wedding consultant who could design an updo for the veil plus tailor dresses would have been a godsend. (My daughter let her bridesmaids choose their black dresses, which didn't include alterations.)
You guys are so thoughtful in your questions. I love it.
I lived near the YFZ ranch and my orthodontist was the one a lot of the ranch people went to, I was always FASCINATED, but none of them would ever make eye contact with us.
Wow! That hair! 😱😱😱. This was so cool to see!!!! Thank you everyone for doing this!!!🥰🥰
This was so fun to see and hear about their experiences growing up.
Thanks for sharing! I'd love to see more videos with Tephi or other siblings or friends that have left.
What a lovely video! It was so much fun watching and listening to you chat. Casual, simpel, informative and super interesting. 😌
Wow this is awesome!!! Tephi did a great job. The braids are really pretty!
Happy to see how much you support each other in "coming out".💕
Great video! I think the word you were looking for is ‘makeunder’. So glad you and sis are doing great outside the FLDS. The braids are impressive!
I am watching this way after many months! I just love the joy and laughter that you all share in reminiscing about your past life! Thank you, Sam and Melissa, so much for sharing and Tephi did such a wonderful job with the pouf style and double French braid on your beautiful hair, Melissa! You and Sam are a delightful, loving couple! God bless you all in your best lives in the future! ❣️❣️❣️
That is so incredible, Tephi!!! Poor Sam. He sounds like he is in a little bit of shock.
It’s amazing to see all of the skills Tephi had to learn growing up first hand!
Such a wonderful video! Thank you for being so sweet and entertaining.
You are all wonderful people.
Great video. So fun. Felt like I was right there with you all! Greetings from Australia.
I love how Tephie is so chill.
She looked beautiful! That braid, wow, gorgeous! I want you to do it again with the camera on the back so we can see how she's doing that back there!
That was lovely. I never wear make up anyway. The plaits/braids are wonderful.
Loved this, so interesting and informative. Did feel for Sam and Tephi coming face to face with their past though!
The long awaited video! So fun, thanks for doing this! And congrats on the sponsorship.
Thank you so much!
Tephi did an amazing job on the dress and Melissas hair. It's beautiful. Loved Sams reaction to how Melissa looked was so cute. Great video as always. Thanks for sharing with us!
Thanks to all 3 of you for this amazing video. Wow Melissa, you really can rock that look!
Awww Thank you so much!
I loooooove Tephi!!! She’s so wonderful. This was one of my favorite videos! Y’all got to bond and it was really fascinating ❤️
Such a fun video to watch, the hour flew by! It was great hearing how tripped out Sam was about the new look! 😄
Thanks for watching!
I bet it was rewarding for Tephi to attach a new memory to the prairie dress! Thank you for sharing. Here after watching FLDS Netflix documentary and I am very impressed & will watch your reaction video as well.
I love hearing your sister story, I love how she got her GED.
When I heard this was happening, I wondered if it would be triggering for Sam. Glad you were able to have fun with it!
Tephi!!! The braid is fantastic!! I just tried to do a simple bubble braid on my daughter this morning and it looks like I was doing it during a tornado 😂. It looks wonderful!!
Omigosh, Teffi, that is beautiful!!! Both the hair, which is incredible!!! And the dress... holy cow. What fun!!!
I love Tephi. I'd love to see more videos with her. Love your channel.
Love this!!! I love when Tephi comes around and chitchats with Sam about their “plyg life” 😄 And, of course, Melissa looks beautiful. 👍🏻
Thank you so much!
Such skill in dress making and hair dressing. I could see you making bespoke wedding dresses and doing braided hair with flowers. Stunning
Tephi has so much skill! Holy moly! Can she legitimately do a proper hair tutorial on different braiding styles?! I know that I and other people would happily pay good money to learn how to do hair so beautifully!
Tephi, girl! You’re so amazingly talented!
I’ve braided and styled/done both of my younger sister’s hair and my own hair since I was in prep (5-6 years old?) and how do my niece’s hair (I’m the only person that she lets do anything to her hair other than a ponytail! She’s even sensitive to brushing and washing! Aunty Li is the only one allowed haha) but it’s nothing anywhere near as complex as the beautiful work that Tephi did!
I was raised in a non-orthodox Jewish family (we celebrated the holidays at synagogue and when my grandmother and grandfather were alive, G-d bless their souls, we used to practice the sabbath every Friday-Saturday. My grandfather used to talk over 45 minutes each way to and from synagogue each week. I was never taught how to style hair, it’s just something that I learnt how to do - the same goes with shaving! I remember being at a close friend’s house in 8th or 9th grade and she showed me a razer and I watched her shave her legs at the sink and thought how simple it looked, but cut myself all over when I tried it myself 😂
I’m also a sewer, but my work doesn’t hold a candle to the work that Tephi produced - and I use pre-drafted patterns! That woman is a true seamstress! What an incredible video! It’s so wonderful to be able to learn about how other people’s beliefs and religions work. God Bless your wonderful family x
I would pay for a braid tutorial from Tephi!
I recently found your channel and have been binging your videos! Tephi is an amazing seamstress!!! What a skill, she should be extremely proud to have that knowledge. And those braids were so perfect! I own my own bridal hair and makeup business and Tephi definitely has skills. Very interesting video. It makes me think that other groups back in the day probably did the same things to be a little “rebellious” and stand out. Slightly lower collars, more fitted dresses, more embellishment, etc. So fascinating. Thanks for this glimpse into the ladies plyg fashion’s.
Interesting as always! It was nice to see Tephi again, she seemed to be more comfortable with the filming this time. The braids I would call double french lace braids, since you add only from one side. The hair and dress suit Melissa disturbingly well😳
I wish I could be adopted into your family! The love, tenderness, and respect is truly amazing to see. I love your channel and enjoy hearing you all interact with one another. ❤️
Wowed! I adore all three of you!!!! I love the format you did here! Tephi, outstanding sewing and hair styling! Thank you so much for coming back to the channel! Would love you to come for more visits! Melissa, you looked beautiful as always! I love that you said you were a “why” person! I cannot fully comprehend things without all questions addressed! Sam! Ohmigosh! I adored your reaction and participation. You made me giggle when you got tongue tied at Melissa’s antics! Also, I have to add, just as you refer to your old home place as {OUT THERE,} all my life, folks from my home place refer to it as {DOWN THE COUNTY!} 😎Thank you all for taking the time and sharing!
P.S. I’m going To have to check out the shampoo and conditioner. I cannot comb out my hair without lots of effort. Glad to hear your endorsements.
Loved the video! Melissa, you do such a good job keeping the questions going.
Thank you so much!!
The dress is beautifully made as well. Lots of well made details. Maybe not quite the modern style but a beautiful piece.
Love when Tephi comes!!!!! This was an awesome video, Melissa, you have enviable hair!! :D
This is so fascinating. I've been learning about FLDS for at least ten fifteen years. Had I been able to watch these episodes back then combined with the books, my mind would have blown.
I grew up in an insanely religious church. We had a ton of rules, just like y'all had, but there were also a lot of differences. We had to wear the prairie dresses or long skirts with long-sleeved blouses. The males had to wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts. We couldn't wear any type of open shoes. They had to cover our feet. The females couldn't cut their hair, and the males had to keep theirs above the collar of their shirts. Also with our hair, we couldn't wear it up in pony tails or braids. That was considered worldly. We had so many other rules. I would have to make videos of my own, in order to cover it all. LOL
Please do! What Christian denomination was it?
In the cult I grew up in we had to do our hair in buns or braids that were low set on the head all loose hair was seen as sinful
@@writerj9129 Isn't it crazy how God changes? lol
@@scarol17 They call themselves Old Path Holiness.
Awe, she looks BEAUTIFUL!! Wow! The hair and the dress are amazing! I LOVE that color. And the conversation was so interesting! I'm so happy for y'all being out and free now.
I love Sam's sister. I watched one earlier featuring her. This kind of thing is entertaining and cute. Thanks!
This video made my week! Thank you so much!
Sending love to Sam,Melissa and Teffy!
Aww thanks for watching!
Wow. Tephi looks amazing 🎉🎉🎉🎉. And she would be a fabulous hair braider in the salon. Goo Tephi 🥰🥰🥰
Interesting video. So nice to see Sam's sister - she looks great!!
Wow!
That “wet set” kind of reminds me of finger waves in the 30s and 40s
What an experience, I kind of think teffy and Sam were almost in shock and it brought up some old feelings! 😰
Teffy your braiding skills are crazy!! You could make some big bux doing hair!
Oh my goodness this was the highlight of my afternoon getting to watch this . I just found myself with the hugest smile on my face . Melissa your laugh is contagious!! I’m so glad I found your channel .. Go rock that hair and keep sweet y’all !!
Aww thank you so much!
Sam, your sister is so sweet! I hope she will join you both more often.
Just came across this video. Not being familiar with polygamy and they're styles, to me, it just looks similar to a 1940s roll hairstyle with a 1910 dress. The back hairstyle looks like a fancy French braid I'd see in a long-hair hairstyle book. Interesting learning about polygamy. Glad I wasn't born into that. Glad you guys got out.
It IS a 1940s roll with a 1910s dress. And actually, that dress would “pass” perfectly well as a long sleeve winter dress even in the ‘30s or ‘40s!
I'm just finding this channel after watching a true crime about the Samuel guy. And it's so awesome learning and hearing all this first hand from everyday people that are super sweet and cool that lived a life that could had took they're lives too such a dark place. Sam and tephi I'm so glad you guys (assuming your sister and brother from what I'm gathering) have each other for support I see girls escaping and they have NO FAMILY AT ALL. this is cool I'm also so glad you have your wife who accepted you for where you came from and loves you unconditionally! You guys are awesome cant wait to binge this channel! Lol
That was such a fascinating makeover! Thank you for walking us through the steps.
Thank you so much for watching!
This was great! More Tephi please!!
Yesss! Been patiently waiting for this. Love you guys! 🥰
Aww thanks so much for watching!
I really enjoyed this format - conversation and discussion was really informative and entertaining. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
What an amazing episode! I learned SO much!
Tephi i like your stories ; you have a lot to share. Thank you !
Yes we’ve been waiting for this!
SOO EXCITED !!
