  • Two of my favorite SUVs of all time, the Grand Cherokee and 4Runner have a lot to offer and each cater to different niche in the market. Here's a side by side comparison including a few areas where each model has an advantage.
Thanks to Wholesale Auto Connection for the use of the Grand Cherokee:

I love my WK2. They definitely did a decent job with it, making versatile af. I won't lie though, give me the interior and engines of the WK2 in the WK or earlier and I'd be in love. There are definitely some more 'modern' touches they really could have done without. The more bulbous body takes away some of the ability to do the crazier mods that you could do to the preceding model, but they kept it way off road capable at the least. Many were scared away from Jeep when the WK came out, but for those of us crazy enough to get close and actually see what was up, we know it's a beast!
I'm committed for sure. About to finally lift mine in the coming weeks

I gotta say I love the four runner and it was my dream vehicle, but just test drove a 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk V6 and LOVED IT!! I wish I didn’t drive it honestly. On road/day-to-day comfort with major off road capabilities, better fuel economy, and even tows more than the four runner at 6200 lbs vs 5000 on four runner. Has nice, jumpy acceleration, comfortable, and has that air suspension, so you can selectively lift it when needed and it lowers once it reaches a certain speed for better aerodynics, safety, and fuel economy. Yes I’m aware of Jeeps vs Toyota in the reliability department, which causes a major dilemma Bc I know the four runner will last forever, but is a tank and bummer to drive with horrible fuel economy (actually loses 1mpg in 2020 from safety sense) compared to the Trailhawk. I think the Jeep is like a Swiss Army knife whereas the four runner is more off road/overland focused with clunky on road handling, which you know is where it will live with most people buying it. For me personally I’m a performance guy and an off road adventurer at the same time. What I hate the most is when I push the gas and there is lag. I don’t care how good it looks or how dependable it is. It’s gotta feel good and be responsive. Believe me..I so want to be a Toyota dude Bc I get the reliability factor, best resale value (next to wrangler and Tacoma), more cargo space, etc. But it’s like a camera..it can have the best sensor, highest megapixels, best reviews, etc..but if it doesn’t feel good in my hand and sort of a pain to use..I could care less. In the end you gotta do what is best for your soul! Live life now!

I got a 4Runner for the reliability/resale and 5th Gen looks. But, like most ppl, it's a daily (road) driver and only goes off-road lightly - crawling over pine logs on fire roads, sliding up boat docks, camping on the riverbank, beach parking, etc. In fact, I have driven a 2WD Explorer Sport 160K miles through ALL of that and more, and never got stuck. In other words, I don't live in Moab trying to crawl over boulders and if I did and my focus was on off-road capability - I'd obviously get a Wrangler.
Thus, I'm starting to regret my decision. More towing, better MPG, better ride, lower price? In a Cherokee? Starting to research if I could sell my LOW miles 4runner and get into a newer, upgraded Cherokee for an even trade. If not, I'll just drive the 4runner into the ground and at least get my money's worth.
Seems like if you want total off-road, you get a Wrangler.
If you want good off-road in a spacious reliable old skool tank, you get a 4runner.
If you want decent off-road (which is all I need), plus better on-road, better mileage, more features, and lower price, you get a Cherokee.

I will soon test it on rough Colorado roads but expect it to perform well with air suspension, which give it substantial more clearance than the 4Runner. A 2014 4Runner would have cost me $8,000 more (used) for much less.

They find this interesting fact, not only does the GC ride and handle better on highway with more comfort and amenities, but it also gives up nothing off-road! You need to do some off roading in a grand cherokee before comparing the two. in stock form the off road capability of both vehicles is about the same. When you do a small lift ( 1.5 inches) and add some all terrain tires, the grand cherokee will out perform the 4runner all day. My grand (2015) has ARB OME leveling suspension, 17x9 rocktrix wheels and 285-70-17 Falken wildpeak a/t 4W tires. I get a consistent 19 MPG around town and 23MPG or better on the highway. With my 24 gallon tank I have a range of over 450 miles. That is plenty for most over land trips.
The 4runner will be lucky to get 12-14 MPG over land going down hill . With it's 23 gallon tank, it's max range is about 275 miles on a good day. Off road 4runners have to carry a lot of extra fuel to make the trip.

i was a Jeep owner since 1986 when I bought a Cherokee. I then bought a '93 Grand then an'05 Grand. To me after that generation, Jeep took all the "truck" out of it. It looks like a generic mini van from the rear And it sits so low, the off road capabilities are diminished. I loved my Jeeps but on all 3 of them after about 140,000 miles the transmissions started giving me problems. I maintained them all above and beyond what the manufacturer recommendations were. Since I no longer liked the looks or reliability of the Grand Cherokee, I looked at the 4Runner and it's a no brainer. Here is a true 4 wheeler. Rugged, great ground clearance, looks like a real truck yet it rides great and I absolutely love mine. Given Toyota's reputation for reliability, this 4Runner will most likely out live me. I'm good with that.

But it had some issues along the way that was frustrating after time. The 4 runner is also comfortable but it’s a truck and it drives like one. Is that good or bad? Totally depends, I happen to really like a truck feel drive experience. The grand Cherokee has better materials and more tech but the 4Runner has everything I want and yes not a ton of soft touch but I actually like it because it’s so durable, easy to clean, and has a utilitarian feel that I like. The resale on the 4 runner is also incredible. Both are great SUV’s and I’ll probably keep going back and fourth for the rest of my life, but I’m loving my 4Runner right now for sure

I looked at both very thoroughly and I chose the jeep trailhawk with the 5.7v8. I test drove a 4runner and it's just too slow... Literally a slug. Plus the JGC's Air suspension gives it adjustable height over the Toyota, plus I like the idea of an 8 speed transmission vs 5speed.
The jeep wk2 design is pretty old, most of the kinks have been worked out, and it IS NOT made in Italy. I think it will do just fine. The Toyota may outlive it past 300k miles, but that's a compromise I'm willing to accept.

  • @RichardsWorld
    @RichardsWorld 3 роки тому +2

I'm having a hard time choosing between them myself. The Jeep is way better on the highway and has better fuel mileage. The modern tech is way better on the Jeep also. You need to at least get a 2020 or newer on the 4Runner to not feel so old inside. At 5'10" I can fold down the back seats in the Jeep and lay down if I wanted to sleep. Just barely though. I can't do that in the 4Runner because the seat bottoms of the rear seats fold up funny. The 4Runner in the Off-Road package or higher has some nice off-roading features and had more ground clearance. You would need something like the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk to off-road as good as the Toyota. The Jeep also depreciate quite a bit faster though. If I got a Jeep I'd buy one a couple years old. If I bought a 4Runner I'd just go ahead and buy a new one But I can't get over the fact that a new 4Runner only gets 19mpg on the highway. Since there will be new Jeeps coming out this summer Jeep dealers are giving huge discounts on 2021 Jeeps.

There's no many go-anywhere SUV like this, and yes I consider the 4Runner a competitor to the Grand Cherokee, I drive most of the time alone and I take my wife for my travels and adventures off-road, I'm not a young guy anymore and don't need extra seats, just something to take me to my work and travels, the Grand Cherokee tick almost all the boxes because it drives better on roads than the 4Runner you can get better gas mileage and it's very comfortable.

@@trent7080 you do realize that's the main reason people buy 4runners right? Most people don't go off road with these things and a lot of them myself included couldn't care less about the gimmicks of cars today, 4runner customers care about reliability mostly and when it comes down to that 4runner doesn't even have competitors, hard to swallow i know but anyone that knows anything about any cars will tell you that they are indestructible, no one can say that about any jeep or any American made car for that matter
