Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 5 new videos every week! Tuesday through Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we transition from city dwellers to full time homesteaders!

I was born and raised in St. Louis ,Mo. After getting married and having children I decided the city life wasn't the life I wanted for my children so the wife and I packed up and moved to Washington County ,Mo about 15 miles from Potosi. We will be here a year in May I am so happy we decided to move to the country the people here are awesome...most of them anyway lol. Most family and friends ask how do people treat us here being that we are black and I always say " I get treated better now than I ever did in the city" the people here have a since of community and are always willing to lend a helping hand and I make sure to do the same. I wouldn't give this freedom of country living up for nothing.

I was glad to read this. It is hard to find info like this before moving somewhere. Would hate to think we picked the right spot only to have some idiots make us regret it later. Hopefully we come across the right community wherever we end up!

I was born and raised in north Missouri. Always wanted to move to south MO, but haven't made it yet. Really learned to appreciate my home state after 30 years in ministry and living in Iowa, MN, MT, TX. Finally back in Missouri, and if our kids and grandkids were not in Montana, I'd never consider leaving the Show Me state again. Everything you say about the Ozarks is true. Almost as good here in the northeast corner.

I moved to Florida 9 years ago but I'm originally from Missouri and lived about 15 miles south of Kansas City. I was born and raised in Independence. I miss Missouri in a lot of ways. My aunt lived close to you, in Camdenton before she passed and we used to go visit her at her farm. They had turkeys, pigs, cows, and chickens. They would name their cows after my mom and dad and several other family members. My mom had a cabin at the Lake of the Ozarks. Good memories!

      You’re never to old...!
You do what you can and you’ll be better off than most
      people living in the cities.
Bake some bread, make some wine or mead, have a couple
of chickens or maybe a few Bees for some fresh Honey.
      Whatever you want.
Homesteading is also a state of mind and actions, it’s not
      just about the work...
Just being a Steward of the Land is part of being a Homesteader.
This can be as simple as ensuring that the land you own does not
become polluted with trash or chemicals.
Have a great day and be blessed.

Your comments about your community and it's wonderful people reminds me of a big incident in my local history. I grew up and still live in a small community in east TN where everyone is also nice and leaves each other alone. But if anyone asks for help, everyone comes to see what they can do. Even if it's just moving furniture or a car gets in the ditch. And the waving when you pass on the road is exactly how it is here. I remember that as a child, I felt I'd achieved a big milestone when I got tall enough to be seen in the car and could participate in the waving.
About 20 years ago, two tornadoes came through our neighborhood in the same night. The whole area was without phones, gas, electricity, etc., for about a week. Some neighbors lost a lot and some lost everything (and I mean everything, down to the last brick). Part of my family was out before daylight cutting trees and helping the emergency workers (there were probably many others, but I don't know about them). The whole neighborhood was out by daylight helping those who had damage and needed help. Everyone worked for a week as if it was their home that was damaged or destroyed, most taking time off work to help.
Another nearby neighborhood that was also hit made the news so everyone knew they needed help. Though FEMA was around seeing what was damaged, it was two days before the Red Cross knew we were hit and came with food, etc. But nobody had gone without because those of us who had, gave to those who needed, including clothes and a place to stay. We hear so much in the news about the bad things people do, it's easy to lose faith in humanity. Though this double tornado strike was a terrible disaster, what happened afterward reinforced my love for my community and reminded me how many great people I live around. I love hearing how much you like your community, how nice the people are and how freely you can share your faith. It's a nice reminder good people are everywhere. God bless America!

Not counting the ticks and chiggers you have to put up with every day and not knowing when a tornado is going to touch down. Other than that, hey it's great I know because I moved out of there because of the storms. So you can have it. God's blessing and speed to ya.

Really thankful you guys put up this video. I grew up in FL and moved to UT about 4 years ago, and I've been researching and looking for a place to finally settle down and homestead. The humidity and weather fluctuations would be no big deal to me after living in hurricane central and a bipolar desert lol, but what's most appealing about MO is the price of land and growing season. I have an autoimmune disease and want to mostly live self sufficient/organic for my health, and MO is looking like where I'll end up. Here's to hoping and planning for a homestead within the next couple of years!

But the craziness near where I live and the pandemic has closed us off from a lot of travel around the state.

I actually used to live in Japan and had a bit of a shock when I came back to Missouri. Everyone in Japan is super polite but kind of distant and formal (at least at first), in Missouri everyone is warm and welcoming but aren't too concerned with "proper" etiquette. It's nice though, I'd wouldn't change Missourians (or the Japanese) even if I could.

John Hunter lol try living in Wisconsin where the weather is different depending on which block you're on ha. Seriously it can be a blizzard in one place and sunshine a few miles away, it's nuts and almost impossible to plan. Lol all 4 seasons in one day sometimes. The winters are about 5 months long, cabin fever everywhere and roads are horrible on vehicles, especially the salt on roads. It's ok if you have lots of 💰 for the winter recreation but lemme tell ya after almost 33 years of it, I'm ready to move on and never look back. Amen

I'm a 62 year old woman on disability.. From NC.. Everyone where I live is on drugs and the crime rate here is mind blowing.. Missouri sounds like the climate I'm from.. I may come visit.. And not just go Willy nilly trying to move some place.. That could be dangerous for an old woman like me.. But I could totally live off grid.. Because that's how I grew up.. Really don't feel like I belong around here.. To many druggies.. And I'm not even on any kind of meds.. But I do like my beer and wine.. But I don't get drunk and crazy.. I love cookouts too.. Just plain country fun.. Where people are down to earth..

My family has been in the Deep South for going on 400 yrs, so I would definitely recommend it for those looking for cheap land, good water, good 2A laws, Christian environment, good homeschooling laws, long growing seasons. You can EASILY grow all year with a greenhouse because some years we get ZERO snow.
That said, if you aren't used to the high heat and humidity, that might be a huge drawback. It is VERY hot here for a VERY long time. :)

My grandparents lived south of Kansas City in a little town called Hillsdale Kansas. I was probably about 4 or 5 years old and got to spend about a week with my grandpa and grandma in Hillsdale. Grandpa had an old 30's something Plymouth that we went to go get something from a store in a different small town. Every car we passed on the old gravel roads my grandpa would just raise his index finger off the steering wheel, just like the driver in the car or truck we passed did. That was the way they waved to eack other! Everyone knew what was being said with just lifting that one index finger off the steering wheel.

Missouri is humid. It's a different kind of heat than the dry heat of the Phoenix or Tucson area. But, it doesn't last as long and it cools off at night. The humidity here can be hard to bear and many people just can't get used to it. For us, it is still better than the relentless burning heat of the Phoenix area that goes on and on for 6+ months. Our animals and gardens tolerate the Missouri weather much better than AZ.

Tons of rain in the spring, with thunder storms, lightening and tornadoes to keep you from getting too bored. Plenty of ice storms in the winter and a good stiff breeze (read that heavy wind) all year round. Oddly I really do like it here! LOL. Where I am there is also amazing dirt. We have DEEP black loam soil. Stick in a seed and it grows.

Hey, I lived in southern Missouri in Ozark county, near twin sister mountain in the Ozarks, I've been up and down MO hwy. 5 many, many times to Ava, Missouri, Douglas county to go shop at the Walmart and other businesses there it's the county seat of Douglas county, it's very friendly town of people, I have a friend who owns the Ava tire and automobile, Tractor repair company on Hwy. 5 right before Jefferson Street, great people to get your car worked on for proper repairs, see. Burl Hopkins, a really great guy! People will come up to and treat you like you were their friend for many years, great human interaction with each other. I love the people of Missouri, they are involved with their governments, and they're respected by their governments. They strongly in force their state Constitution, which is a really long written one, I have a copy of it. They stand strong on the Right to bare arms, you want go anywhere in southern Missouri with out seeing them wearing a firearm on their natural person! My neighbors, the churches I attended were actively involved with the word of God! When I moved out there, I had within a week of time a whole lot neighbors come to welcome me into the neighborhood of the county, outside of Gainsville, M.O.. I miss the people of that area, I made friends with, which was a lot of friends for time I lived there! My mom has a lot of relatives in Missouri and my dad has a brother in Lees summit, outside of Kansas City, Missouri. The rivers are the best rivers for taking float trips on, they're very senic and the water is the clearest I've ever seen anywhere, you float or kyak for hours down those rivers. Go to Missouri hwy. 95 if want to beautiful views, starts at M.O. hwy. 5 goes all the way up to Mountain Grove, M.O., but on the way there stop off at Bryant Creek and take a swim in some really cold water, even in the summer time, and the is really clear and clean, you can kyak it also! Beautiful country!!

Kids, you are not just in the Bible Belt, you're dang near dead center of the buckle.
I'm in the opposite corner of Missouri, in the Northeast. It does get a little colder here than it does in your area, (I lived in Springfield and just outside of Branson for a while), but most all of the things you mentioned, are about the same up here.
One exception might be that there is a lot more farm land here, and therefore the land prices, (for tillable acreage), is higher. But there is also a lot of timber land that doesn't demand the same rates as the farm land.
We also have plenty of water, lakes, streams, rivers, and wells.
    One thing I should point out, in case you didn't know, is that the natural ground water in the Ozarks is high in natural Fluoride. Note that it IS natural to that area, and is not the industrial waste that urban areas add to their water. One needs to know that if you are raising young children, you do have a risk of dental problems. The amount of fluoride added to city water is approximately one part per million gallons. However;
The amount of fluoride in the Ozarks water, (certain areas of the Ozarks only), can be as high as 6 or 7 parts per million naturally. While this is not enough to harm you, it can, and does cause "Mottled Enamel" in young developing people's teeth. {{Think about the jokes of Hillbillies having black teeth.}} Well, that is in fact true in many cases where people live solely on well water in the Ozarks. I learned this because I am a former Water Treatment Operator here in Missouri. So please look into it and see what the fluoride levels are in your well. The State DNR will test it for you.
All in all, I couldn't agree more that Missouri is a great place to homestead and live. Not the cities, but there is a lot more "Country" than there is "City" here in the Show-Me-State, and even at the opposite end of the state, YEP, we all wave at each other on the roads, we know our neighbors, for the most part the cost of living and taxes are low, and the government mostly leaves us alone.
    Thanks for another great video.
