I'm oldschool and don't care about what people think. I do enjoy 90s old steel classic mtbs that I modernize. Just give me a Rocky Mountain Blizzard, Kona Explosif, Jamis Dragon, Voodoo Bizango, Diamondback Apex SE, Scott Pro Racing, Bianchi Grizzly and I'm good. What a minute I have all of those but want more of the old classics
I love this oldschool bikes. I started biking in Austria with a Kästle MTB . Now i built a 1991 Stumpjumper and enjoy all rides with this Bike. You have to work harder to ride trails but it works .
I did a very similar build with a 1993 Cannondale frame. It’s 1x10 with Shimano Zee (which was cheap and available) and Deore V brakes. It’s really fun to ride and a bit faster than I expected.
Now that's a seriously good looking build-up! In Europe we call them Café Racer and ride them in summer to the crowded Gelateria & Ice Café. Means... Hey bro, check out the bling! 😆😅
My son mildly modded my 1988 Rockhopper. He loves it. Yup, it generally doesn’t do “big air” and steel is real can beat you up after a long day on rough terrain.
You did a good job of specing out your hardrock. I love my 84(?) hardrock single speed. A mountain bike it is not.....but pretty da--n good on just about everything else except gnarly single track.
I have 3 90s mtbs and I usually wear some stretchy with slight baggy shorts then a baggy t shirt (prefer baggy over tight) and cooler days a regatta thin fleece, very comfortable and over the years of wearing these type of shorts and a saddle that fits me perfect my butt doesn't get any pain
Wow, that bike end up super nice; rear derailleur setup is spot on, only needing a 36t narrow wide chainring; I love everything else. For me it's only second to Ritchey Ascent 2021 with similar setup but of course with hydraulic disc brakes.
I still have a swell black one, 20 inch frame 1 inch steerer. given to me from a long passed friend. I had it full XT at one time. Chain ig70 i think or 71 and Xt rear der from 95 is still on the frame in the basement.
👍🏼 I just did this Loop last week on my retro 90’s (1989 to be exact) Bridgestone and it is a blast. Really don’t know why so many people ride this loop with full suspension and e-assist🤷🏻♂️
Nice! I just built a single speed too 90s mtb too... but yeah I keep reaching for my geared bikes😅. I like the simplicity and clean look of it, but it's so hilly around Fullerton/ La Habra area.
Everything flexes on this bike 😂. The brakes were $15 for the set! Yea a brake bridge might help, but most of the squish is coming from cheap housing I think. For gearing, I’m a sucker for a mullet. I’m not going to tour on this or anything crazy
Hi I’m 5”8 and have and leg inseam of 31 inches , I’m trying to a buy a rock hopper but don’t know what size frame I would need does anyone know. Thanks
Losing the chamois is no loss. it'll cut down on saddle sores & you never feel like you walk out in public in your underwear. Back in the day chamois was actual chamois cloth for assorbing sweat. Today's are just padding, not all that different from the padded seat covers at your local big box.
I really like them for they’re intended purpose - cruising around and some light trails. They hold up fine. Spec wise, I did t even take weights or measurements when I got them - I just wasn’t concerned with it since they went on a vintage build.
when i get oldschool bikes, i just tune them. i dont change any part unless they are broken. i use my bikes for short commutes and exercising. i dont care much about the looks
I’m just starting to “restore” old bikes for resale. I agree with you about not changing much unless it’s broke. Working on these bikes keeps me busy and puts a little coin in my pocket.
This bike looks very much like my red 86 Rockhopper which also still rips. I had it repainted and after it was stripped there were comments about the quality of the welds and braising. With the right tires the bike floats over bumps like a suspension. Those bikes have interesting geometry, my chainstay is 465.
I ride in a t-shirt and jean shorts to this day......at least 1000km each month in my mid-fifties. Kit is over rated.....unless, of course, we start admitting that it's just a form of cosplay lol

Yes.
I’m fully in love with my ‘87 Grizzly. I’ll never let her go, and yes she is wearing Celeste 😍
Ahh but you missed the wonderful lugged frame Trek 970. Mine is from 1991 and it's magic.

You made me want one of these. Gonna try to pick up a pretty nice one I found on marketplace tomorrow for $50.
Zero expectation bikes and rides are my favorite experiences. The only thing you have to do is pedal and smile.
Love my Outer Shell bag! It’s on my winter fat bike permanently and carries a crazy amount of gear. It’s a very well thought-out bag.
Great bicycle señor, I remember back in the days I used to commute 13 miles each way to work on the same bike I did it for a year
Sick bike man.
Love the old stuff 👌
Gotta love a bike that makes you laugh as you go. Long live The UnKit, my everyday riding attire!
UnKit! Love it
Billy's are very light. I love them and even at 80PSI they perform well on dirt. Run them at 60psi and they'll turn your bike into a cadillac.
I put no more than 30 with good results

Heck yeah 🤙
So sick that your riding that bike this hard hahaha love it.
Ha things got a little sketchy at times
Cool bike hopefully you kept the original front derailer and sprockets you can put it all back on there and will work so well, love those bars !

Gorgeous bike. 😍
Bike looks awesome!
Ha thanks

I think there’s a group that does the Floop on only retro bikes . Would like to join that sometime
I'm also building up a swell 15 inch frame later model ,still black for a buddy. Maybe 95-96. they are made well and with great steel
4:39 Casually rides through the most badass trail ever haha
Just bought one of these at a yard sale for 25$ still rides like a gem 😅
Nice save! If that were me I'd have another broken collarbone. Glad you're ok
+1 that was impressive
Oh, and I love that stem. I have one in a 90 mm that is about to get used with silver Salsa Cowchippers on my next project.
Sounds awesome
Such a beautiful bike!
This was really cool! Enjoyed it!
Thanks, Paul! Nice to see you in the comments again
I will say it again: old bikes are waaayyyy cooler than the modern ones, design and color wise
This bike looks sick! 🤩Nice!
Where was that Ride? Very Cool!
For rides over 10 miles I have to wear bib shorts. I wear them under gym shorts and shirt so I look more casual though.
Agreed. This ride was just under 10mi
Ayyyy, Fullerton Loop!
You mentioned its a mullet build, can you give me more info on rims and tire dimensions that you used?
Nice! I just built a single speed too 90s mtb too... but yeah I keep reaching for my geared bikes😅. I like the simplicity and clean look of it, but it's so hilly around Fullerton/ La Habra area.
Brilliant and skillfull shredding, does it flex with vbrakes, how about a brake booster? Why not switch back to 3x7?

Awesome build.. btw what’s your stem, stem post setup.. I’m changing my stem setup with the current build of 25.4 diameter
You nailed it ! Have you got the list of all the pieces you used ? I've got the same bike and I'm gonna give it some love. Thanks !
Been meaning to put together a bike check video for this build. I’ll list off all the parts in that video
Even Better.
Any help on doing the 1x conversion im confused on what to get for mine
May I get list to links on parts used ? I have the exact bike
What’s the link to that cassette you used? I’m really interested in purchasing one for my build.
How do you like the bonkers compared to the DTH? How do they ride on pavement?
Also your handlebars??
May I know what hub did u use on that 11s? Is it a stock hub?
Does anyone know any builders that can build this kinda bike here in Orange County?
Is that in Fullerton?
@AlanBrando-s6y you should go
Hi I’m 5”8 and have and leg inseam of 31 inches , I’m trying to a buy a rock hopper but don’t know what size frame I would need does anyone know. Thanks
Smooth crash. Be careful bro.
Super sick trail, where's this at ? Also quality content right here
It’s Fullerton loop mtb trails in Southern California

You're in Santa Barbara, right?
Negative
Hey man, really loving the build. Curious how you adjusted your stack and reach vs. dropbars? Did you change the spacers and stem length?
I didn’t run drop bars on this bike. Switched from bmx style to the Ritchey kyote classic
What size of the billy wonkers
26x2.10 addix folding
how much does this bike weigh? Thanks
My wife and I have crashed on separate occasions at that same step up. It's super loose.
Like the beach!
nice build! what water bottle is that?
@velocanteen classic bottle
What’s that rack you are using maybe do a video on the components and the rack
Good idea. I’ll put it on the list
Nice build. What wheels did you use (sorry if the specs are posted somewhere) to accommodate the fat cassette?!
I used Tokyo bike alloy wheels, but any wheel with an hg freehub body can accept 8,9,10, or 11 speed cassettes
its really nice
Are those still the Tokyo Bike wheels? If so can you provide some specs on those? TB site has nothing. And do you like them? Thanks!
I really like them for they’re intended purpose - cruising around and some light trails. They hold up fine. Spec wise, I did t even take weights or measurements when I got them - I just wasn’t concerned with it since they went on a vintage build.
@@TheBikeSauce thanks! 😃
@@TheBikeSauce It looks like the wheels are bolt-on axle not QR ?
These are bolt on, but they have a qr version too
That looks like a fun bike! Was that St. Jude Hospital?
8:05 Sorry Mr. Hawk, he's a little too fast for you, better luck next time.....

Beautiful bike man. That ss setup was wack though
Haha. 1x11 now
Which bars are those?
Ritchey kyote

Fly!
😆 don’t know where that came from
Nah that was more like 3ft of air 🤣
😆😆 my ego thanks you
👍🚴
A reddit xbiking dream :)
Haha, that’s high praise right there. Thx
