43 years ago we sang it as high school seniors, and it was everyone’s favorite. 40 years ago, we all came home from college to sing it again at our beloved choir teacher’s funeral - and to hear it performed so beautifully here makes it all seem like it was just yesterday.
I went to east and I randomly saw a cup at my buddy’s place with the lyrics on it, he never went to east but that got me to listen to this and it brings back so many memories of choraliers and gender choirs and the freshman choir. Man those were good times!
This is the exact version I sang in High School choir! I'm so grateful for a Christian choir director and a supportive school that focused on such Christian songs. Thats definitely not as it is today.
I also sang it in my high school choir. We sang it as part of my graduation ceremony. I remember my part along with all the running back and forth to the risers and back to the graduate section.
As did I & my brothers & sisters, in our beloved high school choir. (1972, 74, 76, 77 Grads.) Tho sadly, beautiful hymns like this are likely no longer permitted in public schools, I will forever love & remember this treasured arrangement of this dear, priceless, truly exquisite song & will hold it deep in my heart for all time.🙏♥️🇺🇲✌
My dad passed just recently and he used to belong to a barbershop group and they are going to sing this at his memorial service because it was his favorite.
My mom used to sing this in her show choir the Buffalo Grove High School Expressions as a tradition that always ends their annual spring show in 1986, and 1987! What a true melody that sinks inside your mind!
So did I on both counts. We also played it before the start of my Dad's recent remembrance gathering, and somehow I had the ability to also sing the chorus one time a capella during the service as what we wished for him and what we know he would wish for us. ♥
Our high school choirs come together and sing this every year. It's such a beautiful song. I'm currently a freshman who never really connected with the seniors, but I felt so sad and depressed to know that these seniors are leaving, moving on with their lives. It's just so hard to swallow it down.
Jordan C it’s even more hard to swallow when you apply these lyrics to what they truly represent; the loss of ones counterpoint , best friend and companion that has passed from our world into the next phases of existence never to again feel the warmth of their presences in the physical form. Love deeply the ones who love you/ and rip za will miss you eternally my friend but u til we meet again in the next realm. Sleep well and trust that I will love and s I will Li
This version brings back such wonderful memories of HS...We sang this in A capella Choir when I was 17...funny thing was that because I sang 2nd Alto and we never had enough Tenors...you guessed it...I sang Tenor, LOL! It is one of the MOST GLORIOUS songs (versions) ever!!! Thank you for posting it!
I sang this in my high school choir. So lovely! Wish I could find accompaniment for it now. I'd like to sing it as a solo, although it would never be the same as with a whole choir!
I'm proud to say that I was able to sing this song for 3 years at Sprague High School. We sing it every year at the final concert and it will always be one of my fondest memories of my time as an Olympian and as a member of the Sprague High School Concert Choir
they sang this song at our school's graduation as well. i swear it sounds exactly the way they sung it. it wasn't my graudation, i was just working there. i still have one year left!
every year at the last concert of the school year all the seniors that were in choir get up and sing this, they learn it every year they're in choir they learn in again until they finally perform
My school has sang this song for over 35 years of graduations I'm pretty sure and I get to sing at when I graduate in a couple months and everytime I hear this song I want to cry cuz I dont wanna leave my childhood but we all gotta grow up
I've just heard this piece on TV, so I come here, search for it, and to my biggest surprise turns out to be composed by a Hungarian born composer. Árvay's name has so far been unknown to me as it is I believe to a lot of other Hungarians as well. It's a shame he's not more acknowledged over here.
Bruce Prigge No one I know feels lonely when they are looking out upon the beauty when in it's presence! Rather peaceful and delightful in fact! I can hardly wait to be there again! :D
We always sang this song @ graduations except our version wasn't upbeat like this one... it had a more solemn & sad quality to it. You COULD NOT resist crying your eyes out. Lol, I LOVE this song & i hope it stays w/ me 4ever. =)
Ireland is sooooo amazing and beautiful. This country is gorgeous and the landscapes are really bewitching and a breathtaking . The Irish themselves - what can I say- they are warmhearted, talented and lovely people. We appreciate and like you guys a lot. We had a great time there. :-) Greetings from Germany, N.
First hit I got when searching for the melody of this song for my husband was actually a site listing the sheet music. Hope that helps, pathwandering. :-) Thanks for posting this, Chan0the0Man. Beautiful arrangement and the lyrics were a particularly nice touch!
I am now a choir director by profession, but have beautiful fond memories of singing this gorgeous piece in high school many years ago. It has always been one of my favorites. I'm absolutely thrilled at the wonderful choral blend and the musical expression performed by this fabulous choir. It is almost exactly how I would have my own choir perform it. What a treat to have this caliber of a performance on a recording to enjoy! May I ask what choir is performing on this recording? I'm almost positive it is an extremely talented and well trained high school choral group. Kudos to the director!
I discovered this for the very first time this morning and fell in love with it. Sounds a lot like the Lutkin Benediction, only nicer. I'll be searching for the score. Thanks for posting this song.
the lyrics was on one powerpoint slide at uni, and that was the day i found out my enrolment was cancelled due to my academic grades. that was a fucking powerfully influential day
this is such a beautiful redition of this gorgeous melody! Thank you so much for posting it. I am convinced that I want to perform this song at my level 5 vocal assessment with the Achievement Program through Carnedgy Hall. Thanks for posting!
@arcticwolfsong Yes. This Song is by Denes Agay. I Just got the sheet music for one voice but not for choir -.- I don't know, if the choir arrangement is by Denes Agay, too. But unfortunately you can't buy the score at the internet... just 15 at one time... By the way: I love this song too.... It's so beautiful.
Our school always sings this song at graduation each year. And let me tell you I hated high school but now that its MY turn to graduate I am getting kinda.... sad
@pathwandering Hard copy available for ordering on the J.W. Pepper choral music website. (do a search for "Old Irish Blessing" and then find the Agay arrangement). This will include the piano accompaniment and all choral parts. I sang this in high school, and I'm going to buy myself a copy!
The complete lyrics: May the road rise to meet you, May the wind be ever at your back. And may the sun shine warm upon your face, The rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you ever in the palm of his hand. May God be with you and bless you: May you see your children's children. May you be poor in misfortune, Rich in blessings. May you know nothing but happiness From this day forward. May the road rise up to meet you May the wind be always at your back May the warm rays of sun fall upon your home And may the hand of a friend always be near. May green be the grass you walk on, May blue be the skies above you, May pure be the joys that surround you, May true be the hearts that love you.
When I first heard this song a few weeks ago I cried because my bird sky passed away at the time and 3 month ago a day after Christmas my other bird blue passed away. I got over blue’s death now I’m starting to get over sky’s death edit: I clucked on this video and my dog, Brockton died 4 months ago of kidney failure. Now here I am, bawling my eyes out. I’m closer to getting over his death but sometimes I just miss him.
43 years ago we sang it as high school seniors, and it was everyone’s favorite. 40 years ago, we all came home from college to sing it again at our beloved choir teacher’s funeral - and to hear it performed so beautifully here makes it all seem like it was just yesterday.
I am proud to say that Shawnee Mission East choir sings this song every year for our last concert to say fair well to the seniors

So does Silverton High School!
This is the exact version I sang in High School choir! I'm so grateful for a Christian choir director and a supportive school that focused on such Christian songs. Thats definitely not as it is today.
They still sing it every year at the last concert at my Alma mater, 24 years after I graduated and still going

This is the best of all the arrangements of this song.
My dad passed just recently and he used to belong to a barbershop group and they are going to sing this at his memorial service because it was his favorite.
Perfect tempo. George, David, Alex, and Sue, thank you.
My mom used to sing this in her show choir the Buffalo Grove High School Expressions as a tradition that always ends their annual spring show in 1986, and 1987! What a true melody that sinks inside your mind!
BG Expression here 2008-10! We sang it at the end of Big Show every year, and the group continued all the way to their final Big Show in 2017. ❤️
Rest in Peace dear David .... this was one of your very favourites to sing.xxxx
This is the arrangement we sang in high school in the 1980s! So glad to find it, it's still my favorite arrangement.
Woke up today with this song in my head. It must be a sign for a good St. Patricks day.
I sang this song in high school. I wanted to cry while I sang this song in choir.

We sang this every year in HS as well. It always brings back fond memories
I can totally relate.
Thank you for sharing this, just beautiful.

The Peterborough Chorus sang this at my son Ian’s memorial service in 1994 .... moving and something I will remember forever....
We're performing it at my high school tomorrow night. I'm gonna cry.
Scottsdale Congregational United Church of Christ occasionally used this piece as the benediction hymn when I was a Bass/Baritone in the choir.
Very beautiful. thanks Carsten.

My son and 6 friends sang this for their final concert and graduation. I cried seeing how far they came since Freshman year.
Singing this in choir. So beautiful...
I have sung this arrangement, very nicely done! Simple and powerful.
Nice! All the pictures I see of Ireland and Scotland look so rugged and isolated and lonely! Bruce

Carol Fiddler Hi Carol Do you know where I can get this arrangement for my choir?

Beautiful rendition. We will be featuring the Irish Blessing in our feature documentary BIG VOICE due to be completed by the end of the year.
Dieses Lied wurde unter anderem zur Beerdigung meines Schwagers vorgetragen!
Beautiful arrangement!
RIP Lady I love you
Happy St. Patrick's day to all the Irish out there. ☘☘🍀
My school choir will be singing this next week. If you have ever read the book Little Women this reminds me of Beth
GREAT ... ♥♥♥
Our school always sings this song at graduation each year. And let me tell you I hated high school but now that its MY turn to graduate I am getting kinda.... sad

i wanna play it on a flute or violin
The complete lyrics:
May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be ever at your back.
And may the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you ever
in the palm of his hand.

May you see your children's children.
May you be poor in misfortune,
Rich in blessings.
May you know nothing but happiness
From this day forward.
May the road rise up to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the warm rays of sun fall upon your home
And may the hand of a friend always be near.
May green be the grass you walk on,
May blue be the skies above you,
May pure be the joys that surround you,
May true be the hearts that love you.
Ray Schaefer thanks. But the lyrics are in the description already.
Yes they are. They're as powerful now as when we sang it in high school.
@pathwandering I have this score but the lyrics are in Portuguese, is the same arranger. For SATB and piano
The song should be attributed exclusively to Denes Agay. A google search will lead easily lead to the sheet music to confirm this.
RIP Prince and Michael Jackson love you both
What a beautiful way to say goodbye, missladyhawke. Your dad will have smiled in his heart.
RIP aunt Terry from Tip.

I don't see where it says which choir this is on this recording. Also, from where, and under which conductor?
Please? Thanks!
