I love how Billy is very knowledgeable and intelligent so you listen intently and then he throws in a “goose farting in the fog” so he catches you off guard all the time. I bet his young children had an absolute whale of a time. Bless you Billy

Let's not forget Steve Martin, hilarious comedian and very talented banjo musician. When you listen to him doing banjo straight (or even in a humorous context) you can really see the technical skill and heartfelt musicality.

Billy came to see, as I did, the absurdity of the human situation, and thought he'd take the piss out of it to make a decent living laughing at it and getting us to do the same. It's either that or cry, and he clearly made the wiser choice. @@cjackson6482

Sitting near Billy in a cafe once, I heard him tell the owner that his wife Pamela, who was away at the time, had left the vacuum cleaner in the hall for him, but it hadn't moved all week !

I saw Billy play folk on stage with Gerry Raffery. The Humblebums. It could have been the 1960s I'm not sure. A musician at the start.

    LYRICS FOR THIS VERSION
    Oh the moon's silver fingers,
    Slid over the mountain
On a deep purple Arkansas night
    The red wine was flowing
    The red lights were glowing
The dancers waltzed into the night
Away in the forest a blue bird was sleeping
    Where only the coyote calls
    The dancers were swaying
    The band started playing,
    an old fashioned Tennessee waltz
Just an old fashioned Tennessee waltz
You've heard it before and you'll hear it
    again
Just an old fashioned Tennessee waltz
Young ladies beware, of mysterious young men
He stood in the shadows the black hatted
    stranger
He stayed well away from the bar
She could see his moustache and his blue
    tinted glasses
And the glow from his five cent cigar
She walked right up to him and said Hello
    stranger
While the band played an old fashioned tune
They swanned arm in arm to the edge of
    the dancefloor
And a dark cloud sailed over the moon
Just an old fashioned Tennessee waltz
You've heard it before and you'l hear it
    again
Just an old fashioned Tennessee waltz
Young ladies beware of mysterious young
    men
PLAY IT ON YOUR GUITAR WITH THE CHORDS A AND D THEN ADD A G IN THE CHORUS 😊 YOUR WELCOME

Curious - no one mentioned his closing with "Waltzing Matilda" - look it up, Australia's unofficial bush ballad; Pamela would have some influence over his liking for it. Go Billy.

Thank you very much for uploading one of my favourite Billy Connoly songs the autoharp is sublime. Fort hsoe that are looking for the lyrics here they are (note these are from Billy's album version and differ from the words he sings in this TV appearance. It includes the last verse which is the great punchline to the whole thing.
The Old fashioned Tennessee Waltz - As done by Billy Connolly on Riotous Assembly
The moon’s silver fingers crept over the mountain
On a deep purple Arkansas night
The red lights were glowing and the red wine was flowing
The couples danced into the night
Deep in the forest a blue bird was sleeping
    Where only the coyote calls
    The dancers were swaying
While the band it was playing an old fashioned Tennessee waltz
He stood in the doorway the black hatted stranger
He stayed well away from the bar
She could see his moustache and his blue tinted glasses
In the glow from his five cent cigar
She walked right up to him and said Hello stranger
He answered it’s chilly for June
They swanned arm in arm to the edge of the dancefloor
And a black cloud sailed over the moon
Just an old fashioned Tennessee waltz
You’ve heard it before and you’ll hear it again
Just an old fashioned Tennessee waltz
Young ladies beware of mysterious young men
With glides and with sashays they swept the floor softly
She felt she was dancing on air
But his hands felt so cold and his eyes looked so old
As he gave her that Come with me stare
She saw no danger but who was this stranger
Was he real was he true was he false
She took a chance and she lost. Her last dance
Was the old fashioned Tennessee waltz
Just an old fashioned Tennessee waltz
You’ve heard it before and you’ll hear it again
Just an old fashioned Tennessee waltz
Young ladies beware of mysterious young men (twice)

The Old Fashioned Tennessee Waltz cover by Billy Connolly
      Written by
      Pee Wee King, Redd Stewart.
