My jaw dropped when I first played this video, when I was just getting acquainted with the autoharp. I've been playing for around seven years now, and my jaw still drops. Karen's musicianship represents a high ideal ... she's one helluva autoharp player.
As usual, precision and great music appear whenever you play anything on the autoharp. You make it a virtuoso instrument, melodies and harmonies all clear as a bell. You make this thing with strings sound like a whole orchestra! Congratulations. My Irish roots are singing.
This is absolutely spectacular! I'm always learning and trying to improve my autoharp skills...but this really puts a lot more out there in front of me!!! Bravo!!!
Found one of these in my friends attic tonight. This is my first time to hear one...Karen just fucking rocked it hard! Such an enchanting flurry of talent right here. I want to here this the next time I walk into a pub.
The bars on the front have buttons that the player uses to choose the chord. Under the bars are felt tabs that mute the strings not in the chord. The player then chooses the strings without danger of wrong strings being heard. I have heard of a person who played without using the chord bars, but that means you don't strum a chord I guess.
Tune it with a digital tuner, or Clear Tune App on your phone. Look up Cathy Brittell who teaches. Go to Cyberpluckers and Yeah, I play the Autoharp, Autoharp Quarterly, and surf UA-cam a lot.
J Q Got lucky and found it at good will for half the price its actually worth. So far I'm getting better. Its not a difficult instrument to learn if you already play guitar.
Go on ebay and look for an autoharp. The autoharps for $100 or less on ebay don't have felts and the strings are rusty. Buy a refurbished one from a luthier and you will get new strings and a conversion 21 kit. She is also playing an autoharp with fine tuners and a pick up. They do make electric autoharps. When Dolly Parton was 7 she wrote her first song using a guitar she made from a piece of wood and some strings someone gave her. When she was 9 or 10 someone gave her an autoharp and she wrote 3,000+ songs.
... and I stopped playing guitar because I couldn't do as well as I wanted to do with only *six* strings??? First time I have actually seen this instrument, and I am pretty sure this would take the respect from talented guitar players, because it is they who would appreciate the talent which is here and which shows how wonderful this instrument sounds. Great sound, great talent and thank you for sharing!! ~F~
The fret bars mute the strings not required. She really doesn.t finger pick it like a Banjo. Look for a UA-cam video of Bryan Bowers playing The Battle Hymn of the republic where he demonstrates the different melodies you can strum
- one of the most articulate, dynamically expressive, artistic, skillful performances I've ever heard - crystal-clear melody and unison octave runs - amazing - how does she do that ? - AWESOME ! where can I find more ?
I don't think there are many videos of Karen but her CDs are wonderful. I especially like the one titled "Landscape Of The Heart". The title of the CD is also a song she wrote and is on the CD. She sings well too.
The 'harp she uses is an old Oscar Schmidt Centurion, with a pick up installed. Not tremendously expensive, if you can find a used one that sounds good. Try before you buy, though. New OS's are about $300ish, but if you bought a custom luthier-made model the price could exceed $1500. Check out the cyberpluckers forum for autoharp advice...
I never knew that the autoharp was this versatile. Amazing performance, and beautiful song.
an incredible musical instrument

I'm Irish something about this sound speaks to subconscious and releases pure musical joy
It works even if you're not irish. I think its just great music.
Why would anyone dislike this video? Karen Mueller is an instrumental genius how can anyone argue this point.
I totally agree.
Just jealous people I guess... So jealous that they act out in stupidity...
Just autohaters
Jealousy
I don't see any "dislikes"?
I could watch this over and over and over.
When you stop to think how close those strings are I think that is talent! Her precision is so awesome!!! :)
Its not about precision. Her left hand mutes unnecessary strings. Anyway its hard
@@IronIronMarkI think Karen plays diatonic Autoharps so some notes are played open with no chord bars
I’ve never seen someone actually play an autoharp with this facility. Impressive.
Like it's someone a piano a mandolin and a guitar at the same time.
One of my favorite musicians! Thanks for sharing your talent, Karen. Wonderful performance!
Crikey! Didn’t realise this was possible on autoharp! Amazing
What an awesome sound. Those single note passages look tricky but are played clearly and precisely. A wonderful instrument and a fantastic musician!

What a wonderful sound!
Lovely gentle sound. Thank you for making this music available to everyone online.
I thnk I have watched this 100 times. I can barely get Red River Valley right, this gal is magical.
Just lovely
Kudos to the sound guy. Mic set up a two thumbs up.
what a marvelous player!
Amazing performance! She is a master on the instrument!
So beautiful! That must represent hours of practice!
Try years. Or are you trying to say that you could play it with only hours of practice?
@@oldgoblin6976 usually depends on your background with string instruments. Like me, it seems easy since I play the violin and cello.
Love this, watched it 4 times already and will more, cool, just starting and loving AH...
Look up Hal Weeks for autoharp. He gives lessons on UA-cam. You can lear a lot more.
Karen, amazing gifts with autoharp, dulcimer, and guitar. What a soul!
She plays fantastically! Autoharps always make a bigger sound than you think they would. I wish they were more popular. They are fun to play.
You are great, and I love your style of playing
wow, this lady plays so good, its almost overstimulating. i didnt know you could do that on an autoharp
she plays well.
Go to one of the Autoharp gatherings. She is not the only one who plays well by melody.
Not many better than her
I'm just back from the Mountain Laurel Gathering. The contest opened up large horizons because of the wide range of music styles played on autoharps!!
Beautiful!!!
Yup, totally fantastic as usual. Karen is the best of the best!
Astounding !! Braw
beautiful
Absolutely beautiful, hauntingly beautiful!!!
So very heart warming. Thank you for all the hours of practice you must constantly invest in your beautiful music making.
This is absolutely spectacular! I'm always learning and trying to improve my autoharp skills...but this really puts a lot more out there in front of me!!! Bravo!!!
I've watched this a hundred times. She is a natural talent. Wish I could play like this--that will never happen.
Beautiful
Wow. This and blues on autoharp are blowing my mind. So cool!
Wonderful, truly wonderful! Thanks!
Most amazing. We need more, please.
True wonderful music to relax to and thoroughly enjoy. Thank you so much.
Beautiful. Amazing talent!

I wish you would put out some more videos for us to watch.
My friend gifted me an autoharp recently and I have no idea how to tune it, use it, or anything, but I want to get on your level!!
That is truly amazing!
She is so wonderful. I am so grateful for her playing. I have no concept of how this stringed instrument works! I'm a guitarist.

@@markhume9768 Very cool!
Wie dit instrument kent, weet hoe fantastisch het hier wordt bespeeld !
amazing job karen, truly moving.
stunning. Seriously, that was incredible.
Beautiful!
This is gorgeous
She is one of the best musicians around. Superb!!
Thanks Karen. Inspiring
BRAVO. Go Girl....... Superb!
Magical……thanks for this
Karen, that was wonderful!
amazing....
Love this. I have a 21 chord a Oscar Schmit autoharp . It's always lots of fun says Judy Corrette
Beautiful! I've got an autoharp but I can't play it like that. An inspiration for me, thanks!
Absolutely!
I just bought one of these on a whim, can't wait to learn how to play it like this.

Where did you buy it and how are you progressing?
J Q Got lucky and found it at good will for half the price its actually worth. So far I'm getting better. Its not a difficult instrument to learn if you already play guitar.
MrMentalInertia Damn you, lol. Wish I could find it at bargain. I don't play the guitar but I would love to try this.

So wow. Gorgeous.
Wonderful, Karen! Wow, the autoharp really comes alive this way!
Roeleke
I love the deeper sound of her instrument; I wish I knew the model. Love the guitar sounds.
Wonderful
Mesmerising.
This woman is good. How this could get 1 dislike let alone 12 is beyond me. Wish I could have ever been half this good.
Now there are 23 numpties with cloth ears who have disliked it?! (June 2021)
Bravo! I've never heard an autoharp played this well!
Wow....amazing!!!!!!!
My hats off to you , lady.🤠😀
FANTASTIC
Very nice!
Enchanting
such an unusual instrument!! love it!!!

WOW!! It seems as though her autoharp is part of her very heart and soul.
An artist.
THANK YOU!!!!
Best Autoharp Player in the World!❤❤❤🎉🎉
I've heard this one twice and realized how much I missed playing the autoharp. I just put one on order.
Wow!
Sheesh! I don't know why I bother! Fantastic!
Doug.
Excellent work! Never knew the Auto-harp had bars on the bottom of the instrument to enhance the sound...
Those bars make chords. They mute the strings not in a particular chord.
oh...ok..i get it...thanks
So very beautiful this is! Look at her fingers go :)
WOAH! That looks incredibly hard!!
wow great
My mother used to play an auto-harp, or so I THOUGHT! It's not the most pedestrian of instruments it turns out and this was lovely!
