If you think about it, a looper pedal is basically just a simplistic sampler. So here's how I think how the first sampler was put together: he had three loopers set up with short loops and recorded a single note onto each loop, and there's a setting on the loopers to have them be one-shot on gate triggers rather than constant looping. So then he would be able to trigger them with gate sequencers. The sample-synth would be similar - have a looper capture the sample, and then use a pitch shifting effect to move where it goes. Then with a MIDI in module, you could have the MIDI adjust the notes where the pitch shifter sends the audio loop/sample. I am not fully sure how he made it polyphonic, though... perhaps it was with multiple loopers that had all captured the same sample (you can set up whatever your record button is to record for however many loopers you have, so they'll all have the same sample), and each MIDI event is sent to one of them... I've not played with it, so I don't fully know. It might be a similar structure for making a polyphonic synth on it as well. And of course, you can apply any of the ZOIA's effects to whatever samples you have. The problem of it as a sampler (if you'd consider it a problem) is that it won't be able to save the samples you collect each session, just as loopers don't save the audio they're looping outside the immediate.
