A note that I keep seeing Bama fans get wrong here - this is NOT their "cheetah package," which has 3 OLBs including Braswell in the game. They only have 2 OLB pass rushers here, so this is a straight 1-4-6. In fact, if Alabama *did* have their cheetah package in, they would have had Anderson or Braswell setting the edge on these plays and might have stopped the drive.
If you want to understand the difference, it's essentially that Bama took their base 2-4-5 and subbed a DL out for a 220 pound ILB (Moody), rather than a 245 pound OLB (Braswell). In the thumbnail, that's Moody lined up over the RT that Daniels runs by. Even in a rabbits package, at least you'd have Braswell (who's not only bigger, but also has much longer arms to manage the OT) who has a much better shot of getting a hand on Daniels.

I’m a Bama fan. That is why I thought UGA would win. Not just bc UT only played two road games and LSU gave them 14 pts before 13 mins left in 1st qtr, but the difference in defensive play calling. The one thing I noticed that UGA did that Bama didn’t, was UGA DBs played Deep to short. Meaning they immediately ran backwards at the snap, making UT receivers break off their routes, and came up and made sure tackles. Vs Bama Hooker was 21-31 385 & 5TDs. Vs UGA Hooker was 23-33 195 0 TDs. More attempts with more completions, but half the yards. Hooker still threw at least 4 deep balls. He missed three opens and the CB (5) picked one off bc he was running the go route with the receiver from the snap, not trying to press. He just bailed out, ran and the ball dropped in his arms.
I think it’s time to start having the conversation that it wasn’t a Nick and Kirby defensive prowess at Bama. Kirby was the damn defensive genius…. And arguably it may have been him in Saban’s ear with the complimentary football noise. Go dawgs. Saban gets it figured out I’m sure.

Even losing 2 games todate, Bama is still top 10 if not top 5. It took everything Tenn and LSU had (at home) to beat Bama. The margin was about as thin as you can get. I thought Bama played very, very well against LSU. It was a back and forth affair and a great game to watch for the average fan. Top flight football played well in all phases.

This just enforces what Bama fans have been saying for years, Pete Golding has no business coaching defense. Saban turned over the keys to his coordinators years ago. It's time to get a new staff and take the reigns back on defense. With the talent on this team, this year has been terribly coached and schemed. Expect Bill Obrien and Pete Golding to hit the bricks this offseason.
I've been so frustrated with the 2-4-5 over the last 2 years. I can't believe they had the nerve to double down on it with a single defensive lineman package. This is why Golden has to go.
I agree with everything you’re saying but it also comes down to players making plays. 42 makes the tackle on 3rd and 7 and it’s 4th and 5 and instead he gets blown up. Rolando, Donta, Reggie, Reuben, Rashaan, Mack. They all make that play
It’s not the scheme so much as it is the players the front seven is not dominate all and that included #31 there were times that you didn’t know he was on the field unless he got an offsides penalty. This class coming in now will bring this defense back to dominance while running a 2-4-5 as it’s base
I honestly think we are admitting schematically we can't compete with Kirby. He's been killing us for years with elite front 7. We became an offense "spread team" once his defense recruits filtered out.
Kirby and UGA won it all last year and is favored to repeat this year off the back of having the best defense in the country (2021 maybe being the greatest ever). Alabama has recruited as well as Georgia has and should be every bit as dominant defensively, but they haven’t been. We all saw Tennessee score at will against them this season and then do absolutely nothing against Georgia. I wonder if the entire issue is coaching, as UGA and Bama run similar schemes with similar talent. I think there is a development issue at Alabama right now, and I also believe Kirby Smart has adapted his defense to better handle more modern high powered offenses, while Saban has essentially given up on stopping them and decided to put the game into the hands of his offense almost entirely. It worked in 2020 with an older offensive group in a year of chaos, but its progressively gotten worse over the last 2 seasons. I think Saban is to blame here, for hiring Golding and not replacing him yet, for the lack of development, and for his entire philosophy change seemingly beginning to bite him. Great defense CAN beat great offense and we’ve seen it with UGA, the problem is, Alabama no longer has a great defense, and hasn’t had one for 4 seasons.
As a Bama fan, i agree with everything you said. Saban has to clean house. Talent wise, UGA and Bama are pretty much equal. It’s definitely alot of internal shit goin on that needs fixing
I think Saban in some seasons has tried to a little younger on the recruiting trail, but that hurt them in the development part of the program. I really wish Bo Davis could coach at Bama again. I also like Jeremy Pruitt
Their schemes aren't that similar anymore. UGA is built to control the LOS but can be exposed in the deep passing game. The issue is you have to be able to handle their front well enough to get some wins in the run game and get time in the passing game. Alabama's defense is setup to defeat the RPO but can be bullied and at times completely fails to put pressure on the QB for long stretches of time. Kirbs aint about to run a 2-4-5
@@theoneandonly1440 I’m interested in your opinion on this: Why do you think Bama’s defense isn’t passionate on the field anymore? Seems like they play with minimal effort and intensity, complete opposite of what Bama’s defense was under Kirby and Pruitt.
Alabama has 2 coordinators that are more interested in galaxy braining the play calls instead of exploiting mismatches and just out talenting people. The DL isn’t as good as it has been in the past but between Smith, Young, and Oatis Alabama has 3 good to great DL’s that they don’t use together enough. It’s embarrassing how soft they look despite the talent which has to just be a personnel mismatch issue. Friend of mine called it “paralysis by overanalysis” and I think that’s completely fair for both of these coordinators
It looks like they are trying to run the old Radar Defense but doing it badly. Similar to the Dallas Flex defense, it's a run stuffing defense if run correctly and the Radar can bring pressure against the pass, but you have to commit to it, it's not a package.
Mind blowing stuff considering what Alabama is paying Golding as the defense coordinator. ($1.6 million annually), This is spot on! These flaws have existed going back to last season. At the end of the day everything points to Saban allowing Golding to call this crap...
I couldn’t watch anymore after seeing Moody whiff on Daniels after he left the pocket. He talked all that noise during the bye week and completely whiffs against a 175 lb Qb in the middle of the field for everybody to see. And not only that Turner whiffs on the 25 yard TD run by Daniels as well allowing the score in OT. The issue more than anything is tackling we are too soft at the point of attack and we can’t break down and tackle
Kirby Smart help install a Tite Front Defense that Bama has been running since he left. It is notable by a few key features, first and foremost the concept that the pass can hurt you more than the run game is key. Hence most downs will be either Nickel base with 5 DB's. Second and the hence the name is it typically only plays three down lineman but the uniqueness is that they are playing tite and the edge players are playing a 4i tech instead of a typical 5. by playing inside it should force the run out in which faster ILB's are supposed to be on the hunt and allow for minimal gain. The problem that I think bama Is facing as a whole is two fold, one The defensive play calling just isn't as good as it was under Pruitt or smart but what I would argue as more important is the Tite Front defense has arguable one linchpin position at NT DJ Dale is good but not good enough. The NT has to be able to consistently eat tackles and destroy blocks relative to the competition. Dale isn't doing this. I'm not saying the Bama defense is bad. They aren't, but the lack of an elite NT is why this defense isn't playing like a top 5 defense.
Georgia has no problem with an early Saban Alabama style defense. Alabama is wasting the talent they have. The players they have there right now, if say coached my Pruitt, would dominate. I'm positive he would've made several necessary adjustments for the Tennesse game. Here is an easy one double teaming the guy that ran the same route five times for five touchdowns. After the first touchdown, his day wouldve been over. Other receivers might have made catches, but not from that guy. They put no brackets on him and just let him run a straight damn line, untouched. I think this is the game that Saban knew Golding wasn't coming back. Credit him for not firing him mid-season and letting him find another gig with ole miss. When Pete's contract wasn'trenewed, he was done
reminds me of watching tOSU’s defense last year and being told that i didn’t make a million dollars in the sport so didn’t understand that their awful defense was actually good
@@patrickbarney7054 while the defense could always improve, I think they are a lot better this year upfront and LB position but it's still the secondary that can still be a liability
Y'all are kidding yourselves if you think Will Anderson is going that high in the draft. End of the first at best. He is looking like a 3rd down only pass rushing specialist if that. LSU stoned him with a couple freshman tackles
Thank you for making the point. Alabama's Defensive coordinator thinks he is playing Madden. He needs to be replaced with someone that is not afraid to get aggressive.
Still am and always have been on the Goldening must go train (and BoB, too). When Bama's defense has been great over the past few years, it has been in spite of him and his scheme, not because of it.
I don't think so, he was missing reads, not tucking the ball and running, missing throws, bryce was not good that day, I think the line did a good job🤷🏾♂️
We have been doing this. Even when we had Barmore. It has nothing to do with personnel. This is what Golding does. Go look at the 2020 ole miss game and the 2019 LSU game. I don’t think our linemen are bad. I actually don’t think we know what we have because we don’t play them at all.
Saban had perfect opportunity to can Golding! Bet alot Bama fans forgot or never knew bout his DUI arrest back in February… certainly didn’t help a disinclined culture
The joy I have knowing that these two are officially in the Pete Golding hater club is insurmountable. Excellent video as per usual!! Grateful that these garbage schemes I've been watching for several years now are getting the publicity they need.
I mean w the first play you showed in a pass rushing situation there's a massive speed advantage if you put them inside it only causes problems in the run game. The dline created pressure so most of what your saying makes no sense besides the fact that there was no qb spy
I know the blame lies with Saban,, it’s good to be loyal but loyalists tend to be stubborn and keeping Golding around this long has cost Alabama dearly
PSU made a similar mistake with its lines, going for speed, under James Franklin. Fine for keeping up with OSU. But it got them killed by Michigan's run game. A bit, last year. Totally, this year, esp when Michigan brought heavy TE sets.
Wanna know something crazy? Byron Young is an EDGE. He's listed as an EDGE, similar to a Ryan Anderson type of player. If you mixed Ryan Anderson and Jonathan Allen, you'd get a Byron Young. He's like a Bryan Breese type player who does well on the EDGE.
It's not Cheetah package. But I think they're still thinking speed as in their smaller guy will get off the blocks faster and get around thr bigger guys before they can set the blocs. Time and time again we have been made to pay for this disrespect! Just because they're bigger does not mean they cant move! This is soooooo ANTI-SABAN. This isn't the smash mouth fighting in the trenches Bama is known for. Thank you for highlighting it!
Bama’s offensive line is below average , so is the defense! Bryce Young is depended upon to score most of the points. Without Bryce Young, this season would be a total disaster ! SteveBaggett
Alabama has the best defensive personnel not just in the country but possibly one of the best rosters in history and they still SUCK because Golding is awful.
FYI, Pruitt is about to receive sanctions from the NCAA (this is public - they're just waiting on the ruling), so he's genuinely unhireable. He is likely to receive a show cause that will ban him from coaching for 3+ years (e.g., same thing that made Freeze sit out for 3 years).
Like you said, this is just criminal. Alabama has been the worst coached team in the country this season, and I deeply fear that it goes beyond two coordinators that simply aren't up to par. Playing one DL seems like something we all would have tried 10 years ago in an xbox game, not something that Alabama, who used to rotate 7 or 8 guys on DL in the glory days, would ever try. What the HELL is going on with this staff? Are they actively working against us, so that we lose games?
I assume that people who are experts in a field aren't stupid lmao. I know that's not always true haha. This means to me that the DL is so bad that this strategy is better than just playing 4 linemen, but how is that even possible with Bama's roster and how they recruit?
Working with true global experts in various fields on a routine basis, I can assure you that bright people often do really stupid things. In this instance, I think Alabama's scheme is something of a radical experiment that failed.
Great video guys I played college football and watching Alabama is maddening. I am a fan but the philosophical changes Saban has made the last couple of years make absolutely no sense. The shotgun finesse style of offense and bend but not break defense are not working in terms of execution and personnel. We have a large road grading offensive line and we continue to ask them to pass block for five or six seconds with the drop back quarterback that it's 5'10. I could go on and on but I know y'all see it too
I know Georgia got Tennessee at home and Bama had to play them on the road, but the massive difference in how Georgia handled Tennessee's offense vs. how Bama got shredded by them was really kind of shocking. Georgia basically held Tennessee to 6 points (they also got a garbage time TD that didn't matter), while Bama let up 52. Insane.
It's bc Kirby smart was the reason you were able to take on teams and shut them down in the past.... Also UGA can win multiple ways they played one qtr high paced played the second qtr in cruise control and then the rain came and they took the air out of the football and ran the ball and played field position Kirby was confident Tennessee was shut down already if not they could have put up 50
Hooker was dropping dimes vs bama and he was overthrowing everyone vs UGA. I’d attribute that to home vs away and that opponent QBs so often play out of their minds against bama.
Great video. I would love to hear your take on Alabama's offensive strategies as well. I think the coordinators on both sides of the ball are atrocious.
If you look at Bama's roster this isn't shocking. Sort their defense by weight, and there's a lot of very young players on defense in the 270lb+ range.
@@CollegeFootballNerds I don't think what we've seen historically from Alabama bears this out, nor does their current roster. Compare the players they have to Michigan (Ravens-standard NFL defense scheme) you see very similar total bodies on both rosters but WAY more youth at Bama. When they go light at key moments, I think its because they have a choice between size and experience; that just happens to be a choice we're not used to Bama in particular ever having to make. I'd be curious to see total snaps for Bama's freshman DL and in what games they are seeing them. If they are only seeing snaps in garbage time, it's probably a hint that the team doesn't think them ready for proper competition. Else, you would expect to see them rotating in.
If sark and kirby were still at bama, bama would be skull dragging everyone!! Georgia has an awesome team and deserve to be where their at, but its obvious there's just as much talent at bama as georgia. The difference is cordinating by a mile!!

This class coming in now will bring this defense back to dominance while running a 2-4-5 as it’s base
I honestly think we are admitting schematically we can't compete with Kirby. He's been killing us for years with elite front 7. We became an offense "spread team" once his defense recruits filtered out.
That's fine if you can score a lot of points. Alabama can't with BoB
@@CollegeFootballNerds I don't think it's fine, it's pretty pathetic actually.
@@CollegeFootballNerds I’m still in awe at why one would run a 1-4-6.
Yeh theyre overthinking. Just go. Run through tackles. Wrap up. Ga baby.
the flaws name is Golding
It looks like they are trying to run the old Radar Defense but doing it badly. Similar to the Dallas Flex defense, it's a run stuffing defense if run correctly and the Radar can bring pressure against the pass, but you have to commit to it, it's not a package.
Bama suffers from poor coaching on offense & defense plus a lack of talent on both sides as well. Gonna be a hard year for us.
Talent star wise is there. They’re not being developed. How many times has Saban let true freshmen play significant time last and this year?
They aren't, but the lack of an elite NT is why this defense isn't playing like a top 5 defense.
ive notice this problem from the start of the season , alabama,s defensive front 7 isnt man enough
This has been going on for 2 years now
Bro I spent the week utterly upset by not understanding “how” we could lose…
But I thank you for me now knowing that we deserved to it!
Sorry but 10 is completely ineffective and 42 is slow to process info.
reminds me of watching tOSU’s defense last year and being told that i didn’t make a million dollars in the sport so didn’t understand that their awful defense was actually good
How do you feel about their defense this year?
@@patrickbarney7054 while the defense could always improve, I think they are a lot better this year upfront and LB position but it's still the secondary that can still be a liability
OSU defense was leaps and bounds worse last year than bama this year, it was extremely frustrating to watch
Whatever they’re running on defense Saban supports it. He’s the one who has the final say not Golding
I love this type of videos you guys should break down good and bad defense’s and offenses as well
Love the work you guys do keep it up
Please do another video like those next year
You’ll change your analysis
"Criminally bad" is the understatement of the year. Many thanks for the analysis!
Fire Pete golding
I'm surprised you didnt breakdown Bama's offense. That seems to be the biggest issue here.
Yeah the offense is the problem. Not only do they not control clock/increase field position, they don't score and have constant 3 and outs.
Smokescreen fallacy
@@MBarberfan4life wow you are so smart to say that and not elaborate. What am I fallicizing?
Awesome breakdown of the game!
The biggest flaw in Bama's defense is Pete Golden. He GOTS to go.
Crazy thst u say Pete holding has a bad defense but in this game w 2 min less he's held a gd offense to 17 points
Can we have more videos like this . Love the "film room" vibes mixed with y'alls commentary.
Alabama's defense has a major flaw: Pete Golding
The "major flaw" seems to be losing games on the last play.
Still am and always have been on the Goldening must go train (and BoB, too). When Bama's defense has been great over the past few years, it has been in spite of him and his scheme, not because of it.
Wow, that’s crazy. Like, instead of thinking, someone just extrapolated an idea past a logical breaking point.
This is why Golding is now at Ole Miss
If players were doing it right you’d be praising it.
Bama didn't throw the ball well because of the pressure that Young was getting.
I don't think so, he was missing reads, not tucking the ball and running, missing throws, bryce was not good that day, I think the line did a good job🤷🏾♂️
Poor coaching by DC, 4 and 5 stars everywhere.
Alabama brought the kitchen sink but it just wasn't big enough.
The problem is Golding
Bamas flaw is no interior d lineman...need someone there
This will be fixed in January.
Good stuff! Thanks
The joy I have knowing that these two are officially in the Pete Golding hater club is insurmountable. Excellent video as per usual!! Grateful that these garbage schemes I've been watching for several years now are getting the publicity they need.
I think that Texas A&M recruiting class killed Bama this year. They took all the premier defensive lineman.
True we still got jahiem oatis last year thoe . He dominated in the bowl game
If you will go listen to Nick Saban, they got the call wrong. This was a bust. Someone was supposed to spy the QB and not blitz.
Golden has wasted so much talent in his time as DC.
Oi thought our best DL were hurt.
Was it the defense that failed to score a TD for 3/4 of the game and went for 2 twice and failed?
PSU made a similar mistake with its lines, going for speed, under James Franklin.
Fine for keeping up with OSU.
But it got them killed by Michigan's run game. A bit, last year. Totally, this year, esp when Michigan brought heavy TE sets.
Yep, it was a Franklin special strategery outcome!! Sigh.
Bryant beat Nebraska with guards weighing 195 pounds!
This is a really good breakdown.
Saban has hit the ending of his reign a good thing never been a Bama fan.
Yeah they are gonna lose 2 games this year they could have easily won. Get ready for a national championship next year!
Bama should hire Jeremy Pruitt again 😂😂😂
he would be miles ahead of Pete!
@@CollegeFootballNerds yeah I saw that
@@CollegeFootballNerds Analyst?
Like you said, this is just criminal. Alabama has been the worst coached team in the country this season, and I deeply fear that it goes beyond two coordinators that simply aren't up to par. Playing one DL seems like something we all would have tried 10 years ago in an xbox game, not something that Alabama, who used to rotate 7 or 8 guys on DL in the glory days, would ever try. What the HELL is going on with this staff? Are they actively working against us, so that we lose games?
It seems that way
UA is weak up the Middle. Run at #10 or throw behind #10. #10 makes a ton of tackles... a ton ...7 yards down field.
I know for a fact that these Alabama players on Defense watching this film and is embarrassed by this. 😬
I assume that people who are experts in a field aren't stupid lmao. I know that's not always true haha. This means to me that the DL is so bad that this strategy is better than just playing 4 linemen, but how is that even possible with Bama's roster and how they recruit?
I don't think they're stupid but many coaches are stubborn
Working with true global experts in various fields on a routine basis, I can assure you that bright people often do really stupid things. In this instance, I think Alabama's scheme is something of a radical experiment that failed.
it’s not talented more stubbornness to keep their 3 elite olb on the field
@@CollegeFootballNerds like last year when Ohio State played 4 tackles on the Oline last year and were surprised when they couldn’t run the football.
Insane.
Yeah it’s embarrassing as a Bama fan really
It's bc Kirby smart was the reason you were able to take on teams and shut them down in the past.... Also UGA can win multiple ways they played one qtr high paced played the second qtr in cruise control and then the rain came and they took the air out of the football and ran the ball and played field position Kirby was confident Tennessee was shut down already if not they could have put up 50
Hooker was dropping dimes vs bama and he was overthrowing everyone vs UGA.
I’d attribute that to home vs away and that opponent QBs so often play out of their minds against bama.
@@manyhatsentertainment8685 Bama did it with Pruitt too not just Kirby
@@slbarr88 I’d probably also attribute it to putting pressure on hooker and not allowing him to make many deep shots to get in rhythm.
But they're recruiting to fit this scheme.
The difference is cordinating by a mile!!
just going off individual success just kirby
