  • The Match of the Day episode broadcast on this day in 1983, featuring highlights of games played the previous day - Southampton v Birmingham City and the dramatic 'loser goes down' match between Manchester City and Luton Town. Plus brief footage of Dundee United clinching the Scottish Premier Division title at Dundee, the Goal of the Season competition and a curious spot of poetry to conclude the show.

@@BurtonRdForever bullshit, for most of the time, Liverpool bought players cheap. How much do you think Alan Hansen was from Partick, Steve Nicol from Ayr, Gary Gillespie at Coventry, both Craig Johnston and Dave Hodgson from Boro, Ronnie Whelan from Home Farm cost?
Compared to the likes of Stapleton, Remi Moses, Bryan Robson, Garry Birtles, Alan Brazil and Arnold Muhren had cost United?
Old Racist Ron Fatkinson was noted for going to Cloughie and buying useless Forest has-beens on a regular basis. Neil Webb was another classic waste of space. Took a while for Roy Keane to adjust.

Harford scores the only goal of the game to keep us up on the last day for the 2nd season running, both in the dying minutes, first at Cov's old Highfield Rd ground in 1982, & then at the Dell against a strong Saints side in '83. Most people will remember the game at Maine Rd more though, as a late Raddy Antic winner for Luton, who needed to win, sent Man City down instead, who only needed to draw...cue David Pleat in his suit and his memorable celebratory run on to the pitch at the end, an iconic MotD moment

I would love you to explain the logic of that Gary. The other year there were 2 or 3 or even 4 minute delays????
IF it was like the brilliant Goal-Line technology which is instant then no-one could complain or object but it's not at all.
I have been to well over 2,000 games since 1962 and being brought up on the old Millwall Terraces I know all about intensity, passion and fervour and maintaining the momentum. That is why we broke the (then ) league record of 59 games at home without defeat, almost 3 successive seasons.
The crowd are urging you on with the opposition very much under the cosh and then it's HOLD IT EVERYONE take it easy we are going to have a review and you can bet defences will latch on to this to cause delays.
Use it to retrospectively stop the ludicrous diving and cheating that has come in by all means.
In the days of the real hard men like Jackie Charlton/Hunter/Tommy Smith/Ron Harris etc you hardly ever had a stoppage.
Being old skool this is just another tool that will dilute and dissipate our (once) great atmospheres. Now look at many "modern " stadiums( NOT Tottenhams) , there are plastic.Plastic fans paying ridiculous prices to see some Clubs spend their way to monopoloising the trophys in All-Seater stadiums with NFL style "Stop/Stop/Start" and a goal thrown out because the all-important 1984 watchful eye says his kneecap was 2 inches offside. CAN'T WAIT....lol
ps How do you genuinely celebrate many goals wholeheartedly next season when you know that 20%+ of goals are ruled out ?
Even those celebrations will be disrupted and muted until zzzzzzzzzz the goal is finally given....

Lerby...had the pleasure of watching Ireland 1 - 4 Denmark in 1985 (WC Qualifier) and so confident were Denmark that they pre arranged a helicopter to arrive at half time on the side pitch to fly Lerby to Bayern for another game!
15,000 there and 5,000 were Danes. Nicest people I have ever met. before football became the monster today

Well things got a lot worse for City ending up in Div. 3. Back then & further decades back big clubs could & did get relegated, but now no chance as they just spend squillings & buy their way to stay in the top Division. Result boring. In the bottom half the same clubs just bounce up & down between the two top Divs. And the clubs being relegated get a payment in millions of £s to help pay the big name players contracts. Rewarded for playing rubbish! I dont watch it anymore just UA-cam football going back from the 90s. Many thanks for this & other retro postings.

Alex Williams was at fault for that goal. Should have stayed on his line and let the defenders bond or canton head it away .he was coming off his line all game and we paid for that in the end.bad goalkeeping☹️

The old Division 1 was better than the Premier League. PL is awashed with to much money and there is to much of a gulf now the 70s and 80s were far more competitive and the FA Cup meant something then now its an afterthought which is very sad

    • @chrisbell5920
      @chrisbell5920 5 років тому +3

You're right about the football seeming to be of lower Championship standard. That's because it is exactly THAT. Since the advent of the Premier League in 1992, the quality and ability at the top level has improved incredibly, a huge step-up in skill and competitiveness (and price), leaving behind what was called Division One which remained at the same (lesser) level. Eventually, that lower level gave itself a media makeover and started to call itself....... the Championship.
      And here we are today.
But, to be fair, the 1980's were simply a fabulous time to be young (if you ignore Thatcherism, the Miners' Strike, the IRA bombing campaign in Britain, the King's Cross Fire, the Herald of Free Enterprise, the Marchioness disaster, the Clapham rail crash, Hungerford, the Yorkshire Ripper, the Inner City riots of 81 and 85, The Falklands War, record unemployment, AIDS, Heysel, the Bradford City fire, Chernobyl, the October 87 Hurricane, Black Monday, Piper Alpha, Lockerbie, Kegworth air crash, Hillsborough and the looming imminent nuclear Armageddon of the Cold War.)
Like I said, it WAS such a great time to be alive (assuming you could manage to remain so).
