Nice one mate. Video was awesome now going through a ton of your videos. And it's decided I'm gonna have to get all 3
I have the Shirley and the BE-OD. Both are great for various applications. Now I feel I need the Small Box!
Small box
The small box sounds really great to my ears, i think the 3 pedads sounds great for different use, DNA is the same. Maybe the dirty shirley is the most versatile.
I don't know why, but every time you start playing through the Small Box, I just get a big smile on my face, especially through the Origin :)
Very thorough and informative. Thanks for doing this. They all sound killer in different ways. Hard to pick a fave.
Awesome demo Dan !!
Amazing review. I think I'll pick the small box. Thanks for the video. You nailed it.
excellent demo, really shows the differences. I think the small box is now on my radar...
Nice job! Sounds like you can play through just about anything and make it sound awesome
Awesome demo, thank you.
I just got my Smallbox it's just amazing thx for this Demo it helped me very much ;)
Thanks for this comparison! I liked the Smallbox the most on LC and Origin; the BE-OD sounded best on VC. I just recently got a Smallbox pedal and I was especially surprised how good it sounded through an already distorted channel on my modded JVM 410HJS. It's a glorious sounding pedal!
Great chops man !!
The BE-OD is my absolute favorite distortion pedal of all time, but your demo sold me on a Small Box to go with it.
all great sounding pedals, different chracters..but I love the Small Box..it's just the sweet spot of them all.
Super demo. Love the small box the most then the BE.
It's very useful and detailed for reference!😍
To me, enjoying every moment in this video can be a great experience!🤭
You're playing very well and are knowledgeable about these things!😉
Great job. Just got done watching tone talk with mark and dave and he mentioned your channel and said great things about you so i came here to see and he was right. Nice demo and I am in the market for a friedman amp but these pedals sound great too. Subscribed and will be watching your other vids. Keep rocking! Sincerely, Michael
Welcome 👍 Appreciate the support!
Best badass BE demo out there.
Appreciate it! Thanks for watching 👍
So much gain on tap on the BE. Love it. Gain is barely cracked open and it’s very saturated. Thinking I like the Shirley for a fully rhythm channel to lead boost pedal. Nice and full and very versatile. Great job 🤘🤘🤘
Super Informative.
Excellent demo! Appreciate the comments on the pedals. Hard to tell on UA-cam without comments from the reviewer.
Glad it was helpful 👍 Cheers!
great demo, so many amp/pedal demos are done to just off the guys playing style and you never hear what the amp/pedal sounds like. This is the best demo for finding out what these pedals do.
Excellent!!! 🔥🔥🔥
I just got into pedals, as I have a “magical” Marshall #2204 that gives up the goods w/o pedals, but I’ve recently purchased a few pedals, including the BE-OD Deluxe and after hearing the SB, I’m ordering that as well, as the Wampler Gearbox and Dual-Fusion, as the pedal game is AWESOME!
This was exactly the video I was looking at, in regards to all 3 of these pedals and you hit it outta’ the park!
Great stuff and thanks for the demo/s! 🔥
Best! ✌🏼
Thanks so much!
Thanks man sounds nice
Another Banger! Love your vids, always informative
Appreciate it dude! 👊 Thanks for hanging out. What’s your go to drive(s) at the moment?
Still loving the the Suhr Eclipse, it fits absolutely everything I do.
What a great comparaison Dan !
I own these three pedals...
The DS has way too much mids for my taste...
The BE-OD sounds great when you set the internal gain trim pod at 9...
And i love the crispy crunch tone of the SB.
If i had to choose only one...
I would pick the SmallBox
Thanks so much for demoing them side by side.👍⭐
No worries! I need to get to tweaking the trimmer to my liking. Thanks for the tip 👍
Damn, it’s a close one, but I would have to go with the BE OD as my first choice. Each have their own character. I want them all. Great demo thanks.
Cheers Jim! I certainly don’t NEED all 3, but it would be a really tough call now to pick just one after this shootout.
Great player , great tone 🤘🏽
Much appreciated, thanks 👊
Thanks again for this Dan!!! ✌🏼
*SUBBED*
Great video man!
Cheers
Now, THIS is the demo I've been looking for! Three Friedman pedals compared to each other through different amps. Dirty Shirley is my favorite. The BE-OD sounds too scooped and too harsh for my ears. The Smallbox sounds good, but there's something about Dirty Shirley that I prefer. It might be the mids and the fact that it's not as harsh in the high frequencies as the other two. On the other hand, I'd probably keep the mids knob below 12 o'clock anyhow.
Me too, there is something special about DS sound.hard to say.
Hi Dan, really comprehensive demo, brilliant 👍It’s the Dirty Shirley for me especially with the Origin. You play just enough of the right kind of stuff on each example unlike some demo’s with too much unrelated noodling. By the way I don’t know if it’s just my UA-cam but when you refer to previous demo’s and point up there is nothing there. Just thought you might want to check it out. 🎸🎶👍
Thanks Ray! It's hard to show off everything but I tried to get in as much as possible. Good shout on the cards not displaying, it seems to be working on desktop but not on my phone. Perhaps it's an issue with UA-cam. What device were you watching on?
This is a great shootout. I have all three and they all sound amazing at home. But I have the DS on my gigging board. I play in a two-guitar band and I found I was getting lost in the mix with the BE and SB. The mids on the DS, man! Playing alone, I think the SB is my favourite. But in my band, the DS sounds killer. But they are all great pedals
Same. For me , the DS has a better "feel" for solos, I can dig in and play with dynamics a little easier. My leads def jump out more. I use a Boss EQ pedal right after it for clean boost and a slight mid bump for solos, out of a clean amp. Great shit.
Awesome as always, your playing is spectacular brother. I'm happy with my choice of the SB over the BE. The BE has the metal chunk I like, but like you stated is too compressed. The SB is more the modded Marshall juicy full tone I like. I am going to satisfy my high gain urges with the Sinvertek N5+, because it's insanely great like ch. 3 of any metal amp/preamp but maybe better because it's in a box with crazy options. Great vid again!
Thanks dude! I’m yet to try any of the Sinvertek stuff. It looks super cool. I’ll add it to the endless list 😂
@@DanLeggatt Going by video only, but vids by Pete Thorn, Michael Nielsen, Shawn Tubbs, the N5+ is incredible. I am currently trying to get another pedal from them first, more of a limited-run O.D. thing, but once I get that, I'll be ordering the N5+ because it's a-mazing. It's like the BE+REVV G3+G4 multiplied a few times... really. You should do a video on t, it's one you may want to keep! Cheers
Great comparison video and great tones right there. I'd been debating which if any of these 3 to get. After watching a band play recently the second guitarist had a fantastic tone that stood out through every song, whether low or higher driven. Checked out his board and sure enough it was a DS. I can hear it here too. It has the best live cutting through sound by far to my worn out ears.
I must admit, out of the 3 I do use the DS most live.
I have a BE-OD, it is a great pedal. I set the gain to 0% then put a booster/Overdrive pedal in the front to push out that full high gain tone instead of sharp high gain sound. And the tight set to 100%
I use a DS through a Quilter ToneBlock 202 into a Marshall 4x12 loaded w V30s. Enough eq/voicing options and avail gain if I want to go from Yardbirds to AC/DC to Judas Priest. I love the DS's mid strength too, esp if I wanna do fusion-like legato stuff. Rig is LOUD too lol. Great vid, cheers
Great demo !! I use a BE OD pedal. Love it. The key is the internal gain trim pot. Turning it down (about 10:00) makes the gain range way more usable...JMHO PS Best drive pedal I've used yet !!
Excellent video! I'm just trying to decide between the DS or the SB.
I already have a Revv G3 and an EVH 5150, I NEED to have a Friedman so I have 3 godlike distortion pedals in my board lol
Wow I was focused on buying the Dirty Shirley but no more since i heard the Small Box..what an awesome combination Small Box with Marshall Origin...I definitly go for the Small Box
Glad the video helped out 👍
@@DanLeggatt I really love your Channel .
Excellent video, thanks a lot...man!!!
Cheers from germany.
Thank you! 👍
@@DanLeggatt You are welcome...!
Small box pedal is gold!
Great sounds man. I picked up a Dirty Shirley recently after watching your video on it. Now it’s gonna have to be a BE-OD to go with it I think 😆 thank god I’m back to gigging!
Cheers man! Please apologise to your wallet for me 😂😂
@@DanLeggatt let’s face it this is not a new problem 😆
@@JoeGreenRocks 😂
Great video Dan. I have the BE-OD and it's one of my favorite. Maybe you have a video on how you record your guitar sounds? it sounds awesome. Would love to see it. Thanks!
There is a bit of info on my recording process in this video - ua-cam.com/video/vCx7XZAADdc/v-deo.html If you have any more questions about it just hit me up. Cheers.
I'm leaning towards the small box, dirty shirley close second
Good video
Ugh, the BEOD is like buzzing bees. Ice pick central. The other two were definitely appealing in tone. Thanks for bringing this to us!
Small Box all the way 👍
I like the small Box it sounds the best regardless of which amp
I have played through a lot of amps and got to say the small box pedal is gold
Love it.All that sound in a small pedal.
I think the BE-OD is my jam.
good!
Great video:)! The only problem is that if you're not sure of what to buy at the end you'll want all 3 of them ;)!
😂 Too true!
@@DanLeggatt I just noticed you have 5150 subscribers🤟🏻
@@gioelevio1626 😂 Good spot! 🤘
Great demo and actually has opnion. Now i can't decide, DC, SB or angry Charlie 3.
Tough choice. All great! My personal most used Friedman is the Dirty Shirley.
The Small Box sits right in between the Shirley and BE OD..........The Small box it is !!
I have the be od deluxe it's two channel.and can do lower gain sounds well it also has a mid control which in your video the single channel.be seems to be lacking .the small box has nice mids S well as the Shirley but the single channel be sounds a lil thin . The be od deluxe is a very versatile pedal .
I absolutely love the Smallbox, Enough so that if I can sell my Bogner La Grange without bleeding out too badly cash wise, I think I need to buy one. It feels kinda stupid to do iy because my main amp is...a Friedman Smallbox. The thing is, tha pedal just sounds great in every demo I have seen it used in. My own personal fave amp type pedal is a Bearfoot FX 3 knob Model H, which has been described as a pissed off Hiwatt. I like it a lot and I do think itand the Smallbox would compliment each other quite nicely. I do know it sounds absolutely killer when played through my Smallbox amp.
Nice video!! Thanks! 👍🏼
The volume in SB vs DS is pretty different, right? They're set in very different positions.
Yeah definitely a lot lower on the SB but actually kind of easier to find the sweet spot. Having more travel. The BE & DS are very similar output.
Excellent demo! Thanx. The "only" decision for me would be which one to buy first... The BE is out, too much gain for me on any setting , but the DS and the SB both sound super useful for different things, to my ear the DS is more Plexi and the SB more Mk II/800... maybe . (I know they're based on Friedman amps, but I'm not sure what amps Dave based his on.)
Thanks for watching. I think they are both killer. There is a little overlap tonally but they definitely have their own vibes and feel.
DS ls More 6L6 American sound, for me SB Is perfect
@@ramsesespinosa5057 I thought it was for me too, but I sold mine after a coupla months and stuck with my Xotic SL Drive just for leads as my amp has plenty enough crunch and drive for rhythm.
DS for me...but the eq on the SB is nice
Tks for this demo specially because I own an Origin and a LP Studio :)
No worries! Glad it was helpful. Which was your favourite into the Origin?
@@DanLeggatt BEOD. I own the DLX version so maybe I'm biased :) but I'd buy them all if I could find them here in Brazil
I have the LP studio...been very interested in getting the Origin20. Is it good for home practice or too loud? Cheers
@@darthgibsonlp6631 way too loud if you want it's own overdrive (mainly coming from its poweramp) As a pedal platform, you can get good cleans and use pedals for distortion. I had to buy an attenuator...
@@letsgofuckingcrazy Thanks Tomás, might have to go for something like the DSL5 combo then
Me i like the BE and the small box.
i really like the BEOD but to be honest all 3 pedals sound awesome.
Agreed. I was hoping that this shootout would make it easy to decide on a favourite. I was wrong 😂
Hi there,
I play Les Paul’s and have a marshal, deluxe reverb, and a Yamaha THR10. Which one of these pedals do you think would get me closer to that slash sound on appetite for destruction? Pretty high gain but not too heavy. Thanks
Probably the Smallbox out of the 3.
Small box seems like a good in between of the BE and DS. Maybe due to settings, but the DS sounds much fuller but darker, the BE sounds open (presence) but scooped, and the small box is somewhere in the middle
Man, could have used this before I bought my BEOD Deluxe
why? the be deluxe is the best one - the DS is a BE pedal w lower gain threshold and a mid knob instead of a set value. the BE-deluxe, using the internal trim knobs, and the mid dial gets you both the DS, BE and really really close to the smallbox pedal. source - owned deluxe, smallbox and dirty shirley pedals all at once :). kept the deluxe
tonedover Where do you set your trim pots on the Deluxe for the DS tone?
SmallBox for me. Deeply regret selling my Laney VC15. It's hard to find a good one nowadays.
It’s such a great little amp to grab and go for small gigs and jams. Doesn’t have much clean headroom but it seems to love being cranked so much I don’t really mind. Seems to fly under the radar a bit.
Great shootout Dan! I'm on the fence whether to go Dirty Shirley or Smallbox! That being said, my main head is a Fryette Hundred/CL. I see you have the Fifty/CL back there! Which one of these is good sub or most similar to the Fryette when I have gigs where I can't use the actual head? Cheers!
Good question.. I would say the Fryette / VHT sound is pretty unique. Very dry and tight. I would say maybe the Smallbox pedal with the tight switch engaged. It’ll be a different kind of tone but one I like very much.
Hi Dan, the cards are showing on my desktop. It must be a setting in UA-cam.
Thanks for checking it out for me. Very odd, it’s not displaying ones on previous videos either. Just seems to be iOS devices that aren’t displaying. Hopefully it’s rectified soon.
excellent demo, would be great if you added a single coil type guitar, but still a great demo as it is
I do agree but unfortunately time is always against me when filming so I have to make some compromises.
That lick at 18:00 I'll shall be learning. see you in a year.
🤣
Great vid Dan. How would you use one of the pedals in front of a kemper.? A video about that would be cool
I think if I was to use them I would just run straight into the input. To be totally honest, I much prefer using distorted profiles than pedals with a clean profile. I’m sure it would work great though 👍
@@DanLeggatt many thx Dan. I also think that the right distorted profile is the better way to go. But I was interested what do you think about a pedal in front of the kpa , I haven’t a stomp here to check it out and I wont buy one for nonsens🤘
@@kempman9811 If I get a chance I’ll do a quick video to show off the Kemper and pedals 👍
the BE-OD is def the Marshall all in one while the others are ok.
BEOD SOUNDS THE BEST
be=od for its flat eq, the surly to much mid and the box to much treble. Thanks , God bless.
Small Box it's a kind of 50/50 of the other 2 IMO
Can you test them with a Stratocaster, how about with Fenders and Marshalls, not Laney?
No sorry, this is the gear I have and wanted to use. Plus, there is a Marshall amp used in this video. I guarantee if I did the comparison with a strat and a fender I guarantee someone would comment and ask for a Les Paul and a different amp. Can’t please everyone all the time I’m afraid 🤷♂️
I have a BE OD Dx....currently not going to watch this till the end....🤣
BEOD
Does the dirty shirley take boost/od well?
Really well. I tend to use the DOD Looking Glass, TC Spark or Friedman Buxom.
dirty shirley all the way
It's like having to pick your starter pokemon lol
🤣🤣🤣
How do these compare with BE head ?
Unfortunately I’ve never played one personally. Sorry.
Dirty Shirley. It's open and smooth and doesn't have the fizz of the BE and SB.
Is the Smallbox good for kicking up a JCM800?
Are you running the JCM clean’ish or dirty?
@@DanLeggatt I'm running it dirty and would like to give it a tad more gain.
@@timh7180 I would personally look at the golden Pearl or buxom boost. Perfect for giving a driven amp ‘more’ - ua-cam.com/video/RHUXghAZYZQ/v-deo.html
