I Replaced My $5,000 Camera with the DJI Osmo Pocket 3?!

- @paulAntill used the Osmo Pocket 3 as his only video camera for 1 week. This is one of the best small travel cameras in 2024, but is it good enough to replace his $5000+ “pro” setup? Here’s everything he likes about this lighter pocket-sized camera and some of its biggest limitations.

When it came time to pack my bags, the Pocket’s compact size saved me a ton of space and weight. Unlike my usual setup (Sony a7siii + DJI RS3 Pro + Sigma 24-70) which tends to take over half of my bag, the Osmo Pocket 3 and all its accessories - including the DJI Mic 2 - which I highly recommend pairing with this, its battery grip, a selfie stick, and tripod feet - fit neatly into just one compartment.
Testing this for a week straight, the Osmo Pocket 3 was incredible for my trip. For capturing my experiences, and being able to take it everywhere I went, it was the perfect tool. In the future, I can see myself using this as my main travel video camera, but I’ll still be taking along my a7siii and some kind of zoom lens for that additional flexibility and range when I need it. If DJI ever manages to fit a zoom lens in the future on this thing, it’ll be huge.

Would you replace your camera with the Osmo Pocket 3?
You can get yours here - hawk.ly/m/DJI-OSMO-Pocket-3/i/TGYTB15
I agree with your review, same pros and cons
The differnce is the the apporach in photograpghy and videography.
Thats why i cannot do without both camera and dji
Another advantage is the lightcut video editing.
One word to describe the dji pocket 3 "fun fun fun to use"
I got rid of the case and just put the OP3 in a microfiber eyeglass bag. Works great.
Any issues with the lens flopping around? I’ve seen a few mini cases on Amazon that I’m considering trying out which seem much smaller.
It does move around a little bit but honestly it works fine every time. Something at this price range I prefer to keep it as simple and quick to access as possible, otherwise I might as well be inconvenienced with a larger camera. Just my opinion.
Oh good idea. The case scares me because i feel like I will break the gimbal when trying to take it out
that is good idea actually
OMG thats a great idea, i have so many old glasses cases laying around, that will be perfect, again great idea, pipefittermike
Hello! I have the osmo pocket 3 and the fuji xh2s with the 16-55 zoom lens. I find that for vlogging - the pocket 3 is the hands down winner due to it being light, compact and very easy to snap and use. On the other hand, if you want more cinematic, bokeh, range options then its where our mirrorless comes in. I think they should both be used in conjunction with each other.
I just got it two weeks ago and loving it. I already started to use it for my YT and TikTok. I used it last night for a concert I went to and wow. I do wish I can zoom in more but either way, I am happy.
Great video, really loved the real-world experiences and your input on it. Keep it up!
Thanks Carlos! It's a camera that's hard not to pack now wherever I go.
@@paulAntill for sure, I feel like it’s quickly going to become an every day carry item.
That concert footage at 00:15 is dope
Good and interesting report. Question: at minute 1:04 you show 4 items and at minute 5:58 setting up the monopod. What is the name or a link to the monopod type stand you use? Thanks.
Great video. I agree with flying under the radar and enjoying the actual experience. A few things to point out that may have missed from my experience. You can power up the Pocket 3 with the red button. It is very useful when you don't want to flip the screen. Also in vertical mode it captures images at 4K resolution using the widest part of the sensor while when in horizontal mode it uses a dedicated section of the sensor for 3K resolution, ensuring a larger vertical field of view compared to cropping a horizontal shot.
Thanks for clarifying the point on vertical shooting! I hope the next model can have a true rotated sensor like on the Mavic Mini 3 and 4 Pros.
@@paulAntill Er... the clarification is kind of confusing because vertical is 3k and not 4k and horizontal is 4k and not 3k. A typo I am sure, as the underlying point about cropping is correct. It is also possible to simply turn the camera sideways for vertical but that can make gimbal operation a bit confusing.
I currently use two a7Iv's when my wife and I go out often we will have one each. It's tempting to get this instead as it's so hard to carry all the lenses you need etc. I can't wait for the future when this will have iphone style multiple focal lengths (same applies to the mini drones) and it would be cool if all devices had time code for when I drop footage from multiple cameras into my editor.
Each year we're getting closer to that. Even just looking at the past Osmo models, the 3 has come a long way. I think you could probably try out using one a7iv and one Osmo for more casual, fun video shots, and you might be surprised by how it changes up your shooting style.
@@paulAntill I had the original pocket but the quality was just lacking. I am saving for the pocket three. Still paying off the NAS I got last year
Thanks for the review. For someone who is looking to upgrade to a DSLR camera or a portable video you make some very good points , both pro and con. In essence I think there are really good reasons for having both .
If you want help deciding between the two, let me know and I give some suggestions. Sony has some great APS-C and Full-Frame Mirrorless DSLRs that are worth checking out. The Osmo is great when you want a camera that you can take anywhere and always have on you. It's more fun to use and helps you get creative.
I just upgraded to the Pocket 3 and I love it as a cycling camera. That said, I still use the Insta 360 RS-1 inch camera for wider shots and the A7sIII with 85mm to create really nice separation between subject and background or for shooting objects that are far away. Still, all of my equipment still fits in a small camera bag with the exception of my stand, which I carry on my bike or in its own bag.
I've owned my Pocket 3 since its release and there is one thing that I noticed about the focal length having some barrel distortion due to the ultra wide focal length. Not a huge deal, but it does get noticeable when people say that they look like they are in front of a fun house mirror.
Where may we see an example of that, please? Tom hasn't shown that in this edit.
Are there any ND filters to fix the ultra wide focal length? I’ve noticed the difference as well
I just got one last week and I love it! Much better to travel with
I make homebody vlogs and also traveling around my city in korea but mostly at home videos and im using the Sony zv-1f but im considering to switch to the pocket 3 cc is it worth the switch?? as I mainly make homebody content like cooking and talking to the camera but I feel like if I had the p3 I would go out way more to vlog since its tiny and even hard to notice that im vlogging, is it worth the switch or should I stick to the zv-1f??
This was good! I went from a a7c to a pocket 3 and love how easy it is for vlogging. I just miss my bookah when I’m out in public…
What do you think of its depth of field? I think it’s “decent” for up close subjects, but unlike say a 80mm lens, you can’t do the same with anything further away.
@@paulAntill honestly I haven’t filmed anything to far away. I use it for mostly day in the life stuff.
the osmo pocket def seems better suited for travel!
I love the Osmo! So lightweight and still great in low light
Surprisingly solid in low light!
Don’t forget, most important is the man behind the cam 😅
Or the woman.. Im person. The person
@@youheart50 yes of course 🥴 sorry
How easy is it to get smooth footage walking around with it?
I just did a real estate video for a reel using the pocket 3 and the dji mini 3 pro. The quality from the pocket 3 looks so professional.
Good review and I agree with all your observations, particularly about being less conspicuous. I bought the Osmo Pocket 3 for the size and convenience. I migrated from a Lumix G85 with RS 2 gimbal, to a Sony ZV-1, to the OP3 and my iPhone. I also use a Insta360 and Osmo Action when necessary. Quality has not been an issue. Only 24% of my content is viewed on a laptop or desktop, so basically the 4K is just for me. (I consider the ZV1 a waste of money) .
I have the original zv1. I used it for a bit with a gimbal, but the convenience wasn’t the same.
ZV1, aside from the zoom, is pointless now this has a 1 inch sensor. However, go to full frame, ZVE1 and it is a different story….
I fully agree. Since I bought it I struggle to think the moment I'll need my sony a7IV and the gimbal. Obviously the quality of the Sony and the lenses gives you an extra, but most times it doesn't worth the hustle.
For content creation is sure good enough, not so much for professional jobs.
The only thing I miss is better zoom. x2 digital zoom is nothing
cant agree more. this cute little thing is less intimidated than a phone. You can film anywhere using this thing.
Hi @TomsGuideUS what stand were you using for the interview around 6:00 please?
Hey! DJI makes a selfie stick that I attached a DJI tripod foot/handle to.
@@paulAntill thanks Paul
Do you not use ND? It’s weird
Is it hard ti frame your shots with the pocket 3?
Your sony shots look great but in the DJI shots your head is at the bottom of the frame and its almost like the camera is pointing up.
Is there a link to the interviews that you did with the Osmo Pocket 3? That's what I'd really like to see. I want to interview businesses and cover products at conventions. I haven't yet seen someone do an actual 2 person mic'd interview with this camera yet. If that works, I'd love to leave my Sony A7III at home.
not sure u noticed a little audio sync with video issue in your video?
Just bought one. Can wait till it arrives!
Just got mine yesterday! I will be posting a video about my experiences with it soon!
You're going to love it. I highly recommend the battery handle if you want to record all day and not worry about charging it.
@@paulAntill I got the creator bundle, I might even buy another batter extender in the near future.
Can you use it for a Live Stream?
It's been awesome having a Pocket 3. I've mostly been using it for motionlapses (timelapses with motion) to supplement my drone footage
Great point! The fact that it matches so closely to DJI's other lineup is also huge. D-Log-M for example unlocks so much when you color grade them both.
That's my biggest issue too. 20mm is just too wide for so many scenarios. I would love to see DJI release some lens mods just like their ultra wide one, but give me a 24mm, 35mm, and a 50mm. I'd instantly buy all of them. Also a macro one would be great too.
Can't be done with the tiny gimbal motors trying to move the heavier glass.
So small n handy 👍👏👏👏 almost better than using phone to film …esp for amateur like me
Good Video and job❤ the vertical topic that the lens isn't rotating, nobody recognized yet! The missing zoom lens is quite frustrating to me as well. What about using the 1,20x zoom for having at least a different angle? A comparison of the different digital zoom levels would be grat!😊
It is kind of obvious that the lens does not rotate for vertical as you can see that it doesn't. The bit about cropping when vertical is not correct. The reason for no optical zoom and no third party clip on long lenses is due to the weight of the additional glass which would strain the motors. It might cease to be a Pocket camera if the whole gimbal part was upgraded to allow for that.
something wrong with the frame rate of osmo , it feels like dropped frame in all the videos, I don't know if it is post-production or inherent ?
Great Vid and a side compliment, excellent sound quality in the Vid! What's the mic you were using?
Thanks, Stephen. Just in the lower part of frame you can see my RODE NTG-5 mic. I'm experimenting a bit with my audio setup, but using the NTG-5 into my RODEcaster Duo/Pro has been my go to and most reliable choice for a few years now. Slight EQ tweaks in Davinci Resolve when editing, but really, it comes out so clean in the raw recording.
Great video. Do you feel like Normal mode is better than d-logm? Also, do you feel like the contrast is a little too much? There isn't much need for an s curve, as it seems to give too much contrast with even a small adjustment. Same with brightness. It seems to be set pretty well on stock "normal mode."
One more thing, what do you think about the saturation? Do you think it is excessive in stock camera settings? Is it still pretty strong when you convert D-log m to rec. 709, in your opinion?
I mostly use d-log m unless I want to upload straight from the Osmo pocket to social media. D log m gives most flexibility with the color edit later without much effort. I also like how it matches their other DJI cameras so well including the drones.
Great video, what selfie stick did you purchase?
Funny enough I'm using the Insta360 stick in most of these shots, but DJI has a very similar compact mobile selfie stick that is great to travel with.
I did the same thing! Been making my content with the Pocket instead of my camera since it came out.
I just got mine and I am super excited to see how much less friction there will be in my video creation/filming
I think the sensor in the pocket 3 is actually more squared off rather than 16x9 so I do think you get some additional coverage up top and bottom (not much though) in "vertical" mode when it's doing its cropping. . I do think it was a miss by DJI not implementing a way for the gimbal to actually function vertically to get the full coverage of the 4k sensor like you can with some of their drones. Thanks for the review. I have the pocket 3 and still watched this whole thing :)
You can just turn it sideways.
@@Ozpeter of course you can. And I have - it's not exactly easy or convenient to film sideways, and the gimbal has far more limitations in its movements when you have it angled at 90 degrees. I'm guessing you've never actually filmed for any significant period of time like this or else you probably wouldn't be suggesting it as an option ;)
It’s actually a “real” vertical video as the sensor is a bit square-ish so it extends your horizon a bit compare to just cropping the landscape video. Although not as wide as holding your camera horizontally to capture vertical video.
You can try it yourself and check the footage between vertical mode and cropping the sides of a horizontal video.
If anybody could convince DJI to a pocket pro version where they attach the (three) camera set from the Mini 4 Pro drone this would be a slam dunk in my view. Yes the gimbal will need to be needed up and it will likely be harder to fit into your "pocket" but the flexibility of the camera and the zoom functions would be rediculous...
As a R&D staff member of the action camera department at DJI headquarters in Shenzhen... I think your proposal is bold and unprecedented. Wait until Monday. After work, I will tell my colleagues about your proposal~haha
I think you are referring to the 3 camera set from the Mavic 3 Pro, but you are spot on!
The image quality is good enough to mix with mirrorless camera. I use it to replace wide angle shot of my camera. Very easy to move around with a selfstick type tripod.
You have a smooth calm voice which is refreshing with most reviews videos who are too high energy and salesperson like, I am proud owner of OP3, music studio room tour 2024 on my channel shot with OP3
OSMO POCKET 3 is just too delicate my friend.
I love the 'up close' bokeh effect on the Pocket 3, rather than the typical small sensor camera or phone look.
Really thorough and detailed look at this awesome camera, glad you gave some reasons why it's not a one and done piece of equipment.
I don't think we'll ever get there. I imagine a future where our phones replace cameras completely, but we're probably 5-8 years or so away before that even becomes a possibility I think.
I took mine to the Austin Psych Fest and the band footage was so smooth it looked like it was taken on a tripod.
Battery size and duration
internal memory only or is there external how do you transfer the files come on man
Mode and settings are there at touch of a button
Great review. Subscribed. I currently have a sony a7c on a gimbal (including GMII 24-70 and f1.8 35mm) . I am looking at your footage of the osmo pocket 3 and honestly it doesnt look very impressive (assuming you did your best to film). Especially if you'er trying to go for a more cinematic look. I think you've help me decide that its not worth the investment for me. Rather get myself a better gimbal probably the ronin to replace my weebill S.
You can press the record button to turn it on
is it me or does the Osmo have a weird look when you record, I can't explain it but the quality looks kinda pixeled and saturated
wow very nice❤❤
Great review Tom, i am definitely going to buy one, but i am keeping my Canon XA 70 camcorder for our trip to Greece, but, i am going to make my wife put this Osmo pocket 3 in her purse so she can take it out anytime and not be so obvious that she is filming. I have also removed the lens hood and the handle from the camcorder so it doesnt look so obvious. Thanks again for the great review, i appreciate it, Pipefittermike
By the time you get back you might just decide the smaller camera is the way to go. I hate heavy gear.
What’s the name of your bag pack please ❓
I use the PGYTech OneMo 2
The lack of an optical zoom feature is a major drawback. Many reviewers somehow overlook this point. Good job, Tom, for bringing it up.
I'm just waiting for the next model to bring a real zoom 😉
Nobody zooms anymore. It's not a camcorder. I walk it
Completely different use scenario, why would you use a camera like this and zoom with a gimbal.
Optical zoom and tiny gimbal motors would not work.
Not sure if your actual name is Tom, if it is hello Tom and I enjoyed your video, very nice done.
I agree with everything you said, not sure if there is anything further that needs to be added.
I also have the Sony A7Siii, gimbal and bunch of Sony lenses and we have the same camera back, how about that eh!?
If DJI is able to add a good zoom to the pocket 3 that would be a serious game changer. Thanks again for your quality informative review. If you name is not Tom what is your name. Thanks!!
I wanna take this into some local hardcore shows but I’m terrified it’ll be destroyed lol
I have some video to take this week of small moving parts machinery so once again I will be using some insta cameras and my Pocket 3. Not having to use a large camera is a dream.
Tom one of the best if not the best review on this camera. I already have the Action 4 and I have debating on the P3 for a while now.
Paul stop making me want a pocket 3 😅
You know you want it
Great camera but the exposure adjustment flickering is so distracting.
How does the Osmo Pocket 3 stack up against your camera setup?
After I pan left and right a couple times the camera cannot find CENTER after that....
Mine does not have that problem. Nor does Paul's it seems.
@@Ozpeter crap, that means I should have returned mine.
@@robliguoriit sounds like you might have a defective unit? It returns without issue. In the few weird cases, I find turning it off and on again helps it recenter.
@@paulAntillThank you! I will try that! Maybe I should think about inquiring with Best Buy about possibly returning mine.
The biggest problem with the osmo poket as the smartphones is , there is no blur at all. And for doing portraits it sucks.
The Osmo Pocket 3 is the best camera I've ever used for making videos. The quality is incredible at 4k 60fps! I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a small, portable camera that can shoot amazing footage.
Great tool but looks terrible under the concert lighting which is common with cameras under a couple grand. I'd use that in daylight only or for BTS. My clients probably would not approve this look. Hopefully, in the future the sensors will be able to gather more light while keeping the compact size.
This over the Insta360 X3? Up until now, all reviews I've read and watched seem to prefer that one.
Totally different tools. Of course a reviewer wanting 360 capture will prefer the X3 which is great for that purpose. But for non 360 use, I do not think that the X3 with its small sensors and 1080p reframed output would ever better the image quality of the Pocket 3. (I have both).
Thanks for the correction. I'm coming from a real estate videos point of view. Seems like the X3 is the way to go for that.
@@ShelterDogs Ah, yes, in that context indeed the X3 has plenty to offer.
Actually, if you press the record button (without flipping the screen) the power will turn on (power button).
Cant agree with this review this is my first camera and yeah the lack of zoom is a monus for me but for everyday use recording moments the osmo is just incredible
You just convinced me thia is not the best camera for my purpose. Thank you.
Thanks for the review I bought my Osmo pocket three and haven’t gotten it out of the box yet my goodness my lazy. I think it’s time to get my butt in gear. Thanks for your review.
Let me know what you think once you do. If you need any suggestions or have questions about it, I'm happy to help!
Here is the thing just get an Oakley sunglasses case 29 dollars sorted
I have a pocket 2 looking for reasons to upgrade but can’t convince myself to do so.
Thanks for the video.
its easy to use but it is not going to replace my camera lol. I use my action 3 for bts lol
Lost my wide angle lens because if the dang case :^/
Thing I like about my ZVE1 (same sensor as your camera) is the ‘filmic’ look, also the great shallow depth of field and low light performance. The footage is substantially elevated above the Pocket 3 for me, and so I like to stick to my small ZVE1. Pair it with the tiny 24mm F2.8 G lens and you have a really small setup when you need small. The Pocket 3 is great though although it can’t come close to your A7Siii in quality. The issue is whether most people watching your UA-cam videos will notice or care. Actually another good tiny video camera, is the little white Sony one, years old, but excellent stabilisation and mic, used by the likes of Bald and Bankrupt. I even noticed Amangasette Press has got one, and he uses an A7Siii camera I think usually.
Unless you need the zoom, cameras with smaller sensors such as ZV1 (not the ZVE1 which is full frame) seem pointless now with the 1 inch sensor in the Pocket 3 and built in gimbal.
If they bring out one with an iPhone type zoom, I may get one.
I have one and see no value in a zoom lenses. Just use your phone in combination. Maybe they can add a little tele lens camera without any gimbal because for tele I don't need a gimbal.
Apsolitno neistinito i pristrasno,odnosno spozorisano
Send me your camera since it was replaced with the P3.
LOL!!!
You could have used an iPhone.
No. Not even close.
Nope. We like to be able to take our cameras out in the rain
I hate taking my cameras out in the rain. lol. Weather proof or not, I’m still using a hood, especially if I don’t want drops on the lens.
Better off getting a zv1 with a gimbal
In some ways yes, but now you have a larger and heavier setup that isn’t as easy to just carry in your pocket.
Nah, ZV1 suck ass. Worst camera I own. Pocket 3 handle it much better plus it can shoot 4k 120fps
let us see illegal immigrant camps with this cam
The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 video quality is same my Iphone XR with my DJI Osmo Mobile. I don't need that Pocket 3 toy.
Unfortunately, the device has a big flaw! There is no possibility to stop the recording for a moment (Pause button) This is an expensive device, an amateur engineering error!!!
is that first clips audio ADR or did you use adobe podcast to clean it up?
You’re the first person to realize that 😅 it’s ADR. I’m OCD and wanted the mic to sound more closely to the rest of the video.
@@paulAntill that's amazing lol. Yeah it was slightly too clean. I. Currently working on audio for a I interview and it's like it turned my senses up to 11. Love the content dude keep it up.
