@jessedefehr Awesome, I wish he would come to Georgia. Just recently heard about the John Butler Trio, and have listened to them every day for over a month. I was watching a Kaki King video, then someone suggested Michael Hedges, and from there someone suggested John Butler, best thing to come out of Australia since Crocodile Dundee.
In my opinion, the best version of this song on youtube, at least that I've heard, is the Letterman version. The musicians are the most into it from any other live show I've seen.
The more you listen to his stuff the better it gets. Get his "Sunrise Over Sea" album from 2004. Amazing tracks, including this one. Also check out Xavier Rudd on UA-cam...he too is another amazing Australian musician.
@DninK Well actullay John Butler only has 11 strings on his 12 strig because when he was young he broke a string and they couldnt replace it so he plays with 11 because its just how his learnt soo yeah if you dont belive me go to 1:38 and pause and look at were the strings go in :)
Chill down folks. This is great music, enjoy it. No need for all the shouting and bullshit. You're arguing over the internet which is one of the most fruitless excersises imaginable. You ain't gunna get anywhere, and you're just marring the enjoyment of this tune for other people.
@3valkyrie yeah dude, the drummer is a badass with very interesting rythyms. I really dig the cello too. Kind of sucks that he doesn't play with these guys anymore. Oh well.
@artieennes I'm not sure but I think he made a new trio, I don't no when or why, but on some interviews a saw with him the guy was allways talking about "the new trio"
that slide is made of glass. there are also metal slides but glass has a warmer sound. And the electric sound is more from the pickups and effects he is using.
@Righteousnoise hell no, try JBT - Coachella 2008 (some 10 mins long), it has a slight RHCP taste to it, just awesome! I'm sure he likes the Peppers. :)
@shehangang He was just paying respect to the aboriginal people of the land he was playing on, if he was in freo he would be paying respect to the noongar people or if he was playing broome than he would be paying respect to the Bardi eldars. Its commonplace to do so nowadays at places were people congregate to do things, well at least with people who know to do so. I know whenever I preform at an event I always pay my respect.
I totally agree, but you have to remember that playing 3 chords in thirty years and keeping your fans is also a gift! You just can't compare the two. Imho, you can't compare any music. Just a matter of taste. Okay, there's good taste and bad taste, but still... :D But that's not what you meant I guess... ;)
I took the octave higher g string out of my eko 12 string because its hard to get your bearings fingerpicking and not looking so with the string missing its much easier to fingerpick. Your welcome
@LSUsuperBuick Well he's trying to replicate what he does on the album. By using effects on the acoustic he can still get the natural tone for the verses and chorus, and have that killer solo, that was done on an electric. If he used an electric the acoustic parts wouldn't sound as good.
These guys are so lucky to play such great songs for people
A true artist!! That was one of the best performances of JBT I've seen. Guys, take a bow!!!
this is one of those songs that vibes with my soul!

I miss this lineup...
@1brotherAC John Butler even said that the trio from this video was the best line up the Trio ever had.

@DninK Well actullay John Butler only has 11 strings on his 12 strig because when he was young he broke a string and they couldnt replace it so he plays with 11 because its just how his learnt soo yeah if you dont belive me go to 1:38 and pause and look at were the strings go in :)

@danielhayes5446 Yea man, i just love how when you listen to him play you feel what he was at the moment of that particuar part.
Chill down folks. This is great music, enjoy it.

@jessedefehr took the words right out of my hands.
I'm pretty sure that's why, I recall him saying it in an interview I could be wrong though
@simoltan
okaaaaay..
I bought a 12 string, and now I'll cut of the g-string so I can play like John Butler.
Sounds better to you?
@artieennes I'm not sure but I think he made a new trio, I don't no when or why, but on some interviews a saw with him the guy was allways talking about "the new trio"
I bought a slide and a 12 string just to learn how to play like John Butler.
that slide is made of glass. there are also metal slides but glass has a warmer sound. And the electric sound is more from the pickups and effects he is using.

Show de bola !!!!! Woll
Cool....
Amen.
It's not cloth... it's metal. It's a slide and it's how he gets the electric sound from the strings.
the way he uses hs fucking effects fuck man the guy is a legend
yeah 11! true story!!
john butler - my generation's bob marley.
@3valkyrie Check the David Letterman version of this song. The drummer gets a bit more face time there.
That´s cool
@shehangang

yes u can............ how can remove the peg as well if u can see ull see the guitar is set up so there is 11 strings
? what i said was pretty true considering im talking about the popular musicians now and not in histroy
@loezzele i think it might be B Gb B Gb B D starting from low to high. Odd tuning...
holy shit...
i discoverd john buttler at school how wierd is that
@DninK same here! king.
Good

The band may be merely professional musicians, but I'd call John a genius.
The bridge reminds me a lot of Blood Sugar Sex Magic-era Red Hot Chili Peppers. Real crunky and funky. Am I the only one who gets that vibe?
Good Luck
I took the octave higher g string out of my eko 12 string because its hard to get your bearings fingerpicking and not looking so with the string missing its much easier to fingerpick. Your welcome
As long as you smooth the join... :p
does anybody know which tuning john uses in this song? i can play it in standard tuning, but i want the real way!
john butler is a fucking epic gutarist
florida??? Pah!!! Will THEY EVER COME to austria????
@tottivictorsk8 i get it by now!
thanks to all the 8493560 persons who told me!
Point is, his guitar IS a 12 string, he just removed the G string.
@LSUsuperBuick Well he's trying to replicate what he does on the album. By using effects on the acoustic he can still get the natural tone for the verses and chorus, and have that killer solo, that was done on an electric. If he used an electric the acoustic parts wouldn't sound as good.
@DninK What ever floats your boat
People have been using bottle neck slides for a while you just cut the neck off a bottle and works perfectly as a guitar slide :P
@3valkyrie True.. I dont understand why john changed him, I guess he wanted a different sound..
!!!!Tooo lateee
@DninK If you want to play like John Butler, take one of your G strings off (wow that sounds wrong). JB has an 11 string.
there is no trio like john butlers trio. maybe zz top
Why he has that red thing on his finger? In the Ocean video it's not there
the red thing on his pinky is a slide
