Some additional John Leslie lore: he was the kind gentleman who rushed the stage to pull Judy's top back up when she got her norks out at the NTAs. What a gent. (I assume, without googling him to check for any OH DEAR LORD)
Okay, I have to admit I fucking loved this show when I was a kid. I must have been about 10 years old when this was on TV and it was just about the coolest thing I'd ever seen in my whole life, it was Red Dwarf, The Crystal Maze and Gladiators all in one. The first episode I saw was the one where all of the contestants died at the end and it blew my fucking mind. Honest to god me and my friends would go to the local park and try to recreate the games on the playground equipment. Not gonna lie I remember it looking a lot better than this but it's hard for you young 'uns to understand how shit TV was back then. Great video, liked and subed.
I thought I remembered every bit of crappy '90s pop culture from my childhood, but I'd completely forgotten about Scavengers. Thanks for bringing it all screaming back!
Ive tried find this show for years, decades even. i thought it was called scavengers but could never find anything on it, ive not thought about in ages, then i sub to your channel and see this!
Leslie apparently compiled a showreel from this & had his agent send it to the Bond producers in the hope of getting a screen test for Goldeneye when it was announced Timothy Dalton had stepped down. He apparently sacked his agent when he failed to secure an audition. I remember in the publicity for this, Leslie constantly bleating on about how he saw it as his transition from presenter to actor. Fuck.
To be fair it could have been a transition to acting for him. It's just he was thinking Bond while everyone else was thinking Jupiter Moon. (BSB's sci fi soap)
@swaggerblonde yea absolutely, I binge watch these loads, there's just something about this channel that's both comforting and genuine at the same Time.
For anyone in here who gives a toss, the overblown voiceover on the show is David McCallum. I always presumed him and Patrick Macnee had a bar bet going over who could be associated with the biggest turkey and still keep a career.
John Leslie was a plank even on Blue Peter. This is a great channel Millard - I'm glad to see the sub numbers rapidly rising. Now stop stealing my time dammit!
I very vaguely remember this. I didn't see much of it at the time, just a few clips really, but I definitely remember seeing a brief review in the Radio Times or similar magazine describing it as "A cross between Aliens and The Crystal Maze hosted by John Leslie wearing an outfit inspired by Madonna's conical bra".
Stewart, I want you to know…. Your my all time favourite UA-camr. I know that probably sounds odd but I can’t stop watching you, iv watched all your videos at least 3 times in the past week, and the Keith Harris one like 7 😂😂😂 other UA-camrs “ drive me round the bend”
So, are they going to sue the makers of _The Expanse_? It's basically the same show. The Martian marine corps would run from battle after witnessing the great terror of a protomolocule-augmented John Leslie. Loved the space-chippy reference, too :D
Just found your channel, funnily enough a lot of shows me and a mate were discussing in the pub the other night. This was a weird one, they obviously spent a lot of money on it but it was just a shite Crystal Maze. And I remember my dad cracking up when scav juice was first mentioned. Thanks and keep up the good work!
Always happy when a new SM drops. As always, thanks dude, these are great. I’d have been a teen when this came out and loved Aliens and SF so I would have been all over this and yet have no memory of it whatsoever.
8:42 Did the stages this was filmed on back onto the Crystal Maze stages? It looks like they took a wrong turn and accidentally did a Crystal Maze challenge, complete with similar music. "I can't see any scrap anywhere just a small crystal, there's a bald bloke playing the harmonica and telling us to sod off" "COME OUT! COME OUT!"
Gosh, this really brings back a distant childhood memory. Looking at it, I think it was more Red Dwarf than Aliens & someone really tried to copy the Crystal Maze with the format, unfortunately the host lacked any charm or charisma, the challenges seemed a bit too awkward & the camera crew couldn't seem to work clear shots of what was going on. I do remember there being other shows of this nature, mainly in the 90s to early 00s, shows like Jungle Run, an underwater themed one with Dominic Wood & a haunted house one too (I think that one had Craig Charles, but I could be wrong). Man the 80s to the early 00s were very experimental.
In fairness, many of Red Dwarf's sets were very similar to the sets from Alien and conceptually they copied over the idea of the characters being in deep space on a mining vessel, as well as casting Mac McDonald as the ship captain, who was also in Aliens in a similar role. Kryten's spare heads were likely also inspired by the scene from Alien where the android's head is placed on a table and keeps talking to the crew, though the effects were somehow more convincing in the TV show.
9 year old me was entertained enough by Scavengers. I remember very little about the show but seeing it now it's an interesting time capsule of back when ITV had money to spend.
I always liked this show despite it's obvious cheese value. I think it was how as a kid I could tell a lot was put into it and how it would have been cool to have been a part of. However that's the weakest part of the show - it was obviously more fun to be on than to watch. Crystal Maze you were right up there shouting how to do the challenges just like the team on TV, with Gladiators they had an audience (which would have been out of place on Scavengers!). I think a more fun commander that maybe lent into the humor of it may have helped. The idea was sound and they almost nailed the execution, at least in set and theme they got it right. The scene of Leslie trying to get a hard man line in was gold - "Hey! want to hear my dog impression?" he then shoots an alien dead, "Woof woof!" .... what?!? lol
Hey! If it wasn't for Scavengers I would never have switched over and seen the debut of the Spice Girls on BBC. Slam your body down and wind it all around!
All the adverts during the latest Millard videos are suggesting I get some therapy. I thought this WAS therapy! [bops away to Steve Wright's Get Some Therapy which is now playing in my head]
Ahh! That's where she's from?! I barely remember the show at all but I remembered that nice android woman and had wondered where I'd seen her and thought it was from some low budget sci-fi movie I'd rented on VHS from Choices video store back then. I still don't really remember this show even after watching this video but nice to see her again. Thanks! The sets are pretty cool and that combined with the early 90s British TV production makes it feel more like Red Dwarf than Aliens (also weirdly I only just learnt those franchises shared an actor) and that in itself would be nice enough but with Leslie instead of Lister it's not quite entertaining enough (both men cleared of similar allegations too... I mean Leslie and Craig Charles, not Lister obviously). That main villain definitely got the Predator 'dreadlock' thing going on because obviously if you 'steal' from Alien, you can 'steal' from Predator as well. :P
I’m surprised I have no recollection of this. Can’t believe my Dad wouldn’t have been hooked on the promised of a hint of android boob on a Saturday night. Can’t help but wonder whether a better host might have saved it? Someone with the sufficient acting chops but, also capable of being a charismatic conduit between the bewildering camera work and the audience.
I've been having flashbacks to this for years, but unable to remember the name. The only specific thing I remember was a scene where John has a quick draw with an alien where he says "Ever heard my impression of a dog?" *shoots alien* "Woof! (dramatic pause) Woof!" Haha, "norks"... haven't heard that word in a while, God I miss it
I remember when his 3 way "home video" with abi Tittymas as doing the rounds at my school...

John Leslie as a hardened space marine puts me in mind of a more handsy Pex from Paradise Towers.
Fun fact : Weyland Yutani provided some items to the Paradise Towers resort. ( Look at the prop oil drums and storage boxes ;) )
Plus 10 for the Neil Breen reference.

I genuinely cant believe i have no knowledge at all about thus show. What a hilarious commentary once again. Nice one 😊

Anyone else remember 1998s Ice Warriors on ITV? It was like Gladiators ,but with Magic, wizzards, sorcerers...and the entire show was on Ice...?
Knights and Warriors, it was a knock off Gladiators. There was one stage on Rollerblades. Surprisingly fun
I do, I'm glad some footage has been uploaded to youtube, I always remember it being hilariously bad. I'd really like to see a whole episode again :)
