    It is mind blowing that Ali has gotten as far as he has in life thinking that each dot on the SSL EQ is 1dB when it is 3, especially since he used the boards before the plugins and is an SSL veteran. It's almost like the numbers don't matter or something

      It was $119 during the summer sale, but if you missed it you'll likely get another chance during the Holiday sale. Though at that price it's a pretty good deal, if you can afford at least the 3+1 custom bundle, then you can get it for just $100 plus any other three plugins of your choice. The cost basis is even better for the 6+2 and 10+3 bundles.

    Each dot on the EQ represents 3db. You boosted almost 2db of 8k, You are doing 6db cut at 300hz and a 3db boost at 320hz.

    No cap my ear has developed a lot, but I still struggle to hear the adjustments in release. Once I get that down I feel I will be so close to mastering compression (which is honestly one of the hardest things to have a solid grasp on)

    • @ricorvrnc8899

      do it like its shown in the video, listen to the fastest release and then to the slowest to hear the difference, then come to the middle and find a sweet spot. if you dont hear a difference between the extreme settings lower the threshold and/or raise the ratio

    • @Matheus-ly6eu
      @Matheus-ly6eu 2 роки тому

      I think it's tough cause there's a couple things you might be listening for, with the release - tone and dynamics. In terms of tone, a slower release is gonna result in a more muted high end. In terms of dynamics, a slower release is usually gonna be paired with a slower-ish attack, and that'd be when you're looking to control the projection of the vowels, stabilize it.
      When you're looking to actually shape the attack on a source, that's gonna be with a faster attack (try and exercise listening to the difference in 0ms of attack to 1ms, and so on... it's pretty mind-blowing) and with a faster release - but, in this situation, I find I'm usually setting the release in relationship to the upcoming attack, to make sure it releases completely before it, and not looking as much at the word that actually triggered the compressor. After getting the release in that sweet-spot so it's not choking the upcoming attack, you can then start listening for tone and do some minor adjustments with that in mind.
      That kind of explanation really opened my ears to compression - hope it helps you too! It's all about knowing what to listen for.

    • @darkskinwhite
      @darkskinwhite 2 роки тому +1

      take a very sloppy sounding snare or hihat and play with the release on there. take it to extremes and just play with it that can help a lot. vocals are so variable it can be hard to hear but to learn it I really recommend a loose transient sound (loop/oneshot so you know exactly what to expect to hear as you change it)

    as sylvia massey says in her book, sometimes they should just remove all labelling from Eqs and compressors and just let engineers use their ears. dude here defs is going on ears mostly as far as i can see which is actually fine with me and i much prefer the "turn a knob till it sounds better" approach to the fkn accountant style engineers who are like "i scoop 1db at 340hz off my snares" etc which just feels so unsexy

    I dont even think he knows that he compressed the signal before eq'ing it. The EQ DYN SC button wasn't pushed in... Listen kids, if you wanna learn how to mix, dont listen too much to these celebrity mixers. Ali is dope, and he's good at what he's doing, but he knows jackshit about the actual physics behind his craft. He understand his tools, and goes by feeling - an ability takes years to develop. Now, drop to your knees, and start worshipping Dan Worrall. Study his youtube channel (also fabfilter's yt channel), and beware, it's not going to be intuitive, and most of it wont make sense the first time watching: But you will learn real shit. None of this "ohh too much compression = very bad" - shit. There are no rules.
