Can tell how experienced you are streaky cause everything you show us is subtle and not over the top.. like most of us are guilty of doing when starting off 😂
Another vocal effect I use on everything - I love the Waves Rvox, its an automatic vocal compressor but I whack it on all kinds of instruments. Partly because its automatic and I dont have to mess about with any controls, but also because it adds low end warmth while smothing out the volume.
The compressor settings (buried threshold, ratio to taste) on this work really well on guitars too. Joe Barresi shows it on a waves video he did using the waves ssl e-channel. The low ratio helps keep things sounding overall a lot more natural than just the typical 4:1 ratio
You are the greatest, I don’t care what anyone says. There is no one like you when it comes to this mixing stuff sir !! You have helped me tremendously🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
This is crazy. I've tried so many compressors. Most recently the typical combination of 1176 and LA-2A. I needed 2 de-essers in the vocal chain and was constantly turning individual frequencies up and down. With the SSL trick I no longer need a de-esser or even an EQ. The vocals now sound exactly the way I always wanted them to. Thank you, thank you, thank you! 🍀
I cant fathom how someone would watch your channel (obviously a person that needs audio production instruction) and not be subscribed. I learned a lot about audio production in other channels, but they were the basics that are taught in school. Your channel has given soooo many professional tips and tricks (use-cases) of how to professionally utilize these tools to reach the highest quality sounding results past basic understanding of use. Its like someone showing you how to throw a curveball versus a prop pitcher showing you the little tips and tricks to get past the basic understanding of how it works. Anyone thats used your tips has heard the drastic improvement on the quality of their mixes by doing so and knowing these tips and tricks across all the different instrumentations and channels is the difference between good amateur and pro. So grateful for your channel and keep up the amazing work!
I appreciate that this trick is making it's way out there. (I believe the german UA-cam-Channel "Recording Blog" startet it all.) When I was in my internship at a fully analog studio back in the day, I was taught, that the magic of the SSL is in the low ratios (well below 2:1). This will also make the "fast attack" setting work like a charm on your snare drums (try shaping the transient first with another compressor or TD). Very valuable lesson by Streaky! Just keep your gain staging in mind - if you hit your input too low, you might miss the point...
All Hail Streaky! I have a bluesy rock tone voice and this setting cleaned up my vocals beautifully! No bull! You're a lifesaver (baby)! Just plain fantastic!!!!!
I love this trip, I first saw it a couple weeks ago, and Someone was referring to it as the “German SSL trick” But he didn’t say you could use it on any instrument, but me being the type I am started using it on vocals, and I really liked how it sounded, but hearing you confirm it definitely makes me feel like I’m on the right track sonically. Keep up the great vids
Amazing trick this, an old SSL one from the 80s I hear. Technically the ratio starts at 1 not 0 but that's just nitpicking. Also works really well on bd and sn.
You’re the king! I’m already mixing my track and your tutorials with low end and vocals are making my tracks so professional. This one will help me too, thanks a lot ❤
Yes, the classic ssl compressor trick, this is gold. Just beware that the input level is also very important here. What is your gain stage, -18? Best regards!
Streaky Rocks - I use your side chain (vocals) compressor trick on the the reverb & delay aux tracks for ducking those effects on vocal tracks which works awesome (advanced stuff) very innovative stuff your always sharing - thanks so much
Bro when he says that this is not the normal gluey waves compressor, is he saying that its better? Cuz he always use that waves black compressor in a lot of videos. Idk if i undestood wrong.
Def gonna use this. I like using these channel strips as a one stop shop for the basic stuff I might like to have on a channel. Gain staging, HP, Gate, and first stage of compression. This is a great way to use just one knob to start giving the transients a squeeze, then more comp can be used further down the chain if it's needed for the mix. Thanks for this.
For sure smoothed it right out. The other obvious thing is .... the importance of getting a great vocal (or anything for that matter) is the capture which you / they for sure did. Curious are you using the Spaced Out plugin for the delay / reverb? Vocals sounded great.
hey man great videos, so great in fact, that I actually subscribed the other day - dunno what anyone else is waiting for. Thanks for sharing a tremendous amount of technique. I've been at this for well over 20 years and it's just astonishing how much there is to learn.
Excellent video, totally makes sense. Only comment would be that a verbal mention of correct gain level on audio region would be very helpful to many, as I’d assume this would make or break how well this technique works.
Great tip, thanks! One other thing though: This goes for all emulations of the SSL Channel strip. It's about the EQ. Maybe a bit off topic here, but hope you don't mind me sharing and actually wonder what your thoughts are on this. The EQ of the channel strip is not calibrated accurately. For instance. If you use a low cut filter and set it to 70Hz, it's not actually removing everything under 70Hz. You can test this by putting a parametric after the channel strip, so you can see what's actually happening. For some reason ALL emulations have this 'issue'. I wonder why not a single company has addressed this strange feat. Or I must be missing something... I mean it's definitely true what they say "Use your ears".
I do this. It was how I learned compression before anyone told me I was doing it wrong. I do this exact thing and then back off the threshold if there’s too much compression and it works really well and fast. I thought everyone did this lol.
Hello, thank the Gods for finding your channel.. the question is, can I use this method on drum group processing? as well as other sounds of the middle and overheads?
I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your time and expertise - please ignore the wankers who don’t - my son and I truly enjoy your channel - keep the videos coming
Hi there, can this be done on an Analogue compressor plugin that has an Attack dial? If so, what setting would be ideal for the Attack or is it to taste? Thanks. Chris
Great tip! I always struggle as the first thing I do after cleaning and subtracting is trying it with the glue comp or maxxvolume or even automation but these settings are money!!!
Another vocal effect I use on everything - I love the Waves Rvox, its an automatic vocal compressor but I whack it on all kinds of instruments. Partly because its automatic and I dont have to mess about with any controls, but also because it adds low end warmth while smothing out the volume.
I love your videos man, plus this video helped me out alot, but bro can please tell me what song is this, it’s in mostly every tutorial videos that I’ve seen of yours. 😅
Awesome! Thank you for sharing this. In which cases will you go for this technique instead of using the standard way to compress ? Do you think that this technique work well also with an SSL 9000J ?
Great tip, but just to clarify - at what level is the vocal going into the compressor? That would surely affect the ratio amount and therefore give a different result?
Really great technique and explanation. I only discovered this a couple of months ago and made a video about it as well showing it on instrument tracks :).
Can tell how experienced you are streaky cause everything you show us is subtle and not over the top.. like most of us are guilty of doing when starting off 😂

sounds gay but it works
I personally do this exact trick for lots of things other than vocals. Works really good on bass.
and as glue on a bus
You are the greatest, I don’t care what anyone says. There is no one like you when it comes to this mixing stuff sir !! You have helped me tremendously🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
same with me dude, I don't see why people who don't even produce think they have the right to comment dumb stuff on helpful videos like this
Agreed!

As an artist who mixes/masters my own work and on my quest to revive Rock to its former glory, every little tip helps‼️
Thank you for not calling yourself a producer, because you are in fact an artist
I cant fathom how someone would watch your channel (obviously a person that needs audio production instruction) and not be subscribed.

There are lots of compressor tricks for vocals but the ssl is quick/easy and has a recognizable sound
All Hail Streaky! I have a bluesy rock tone voice and this setting cleaned up my vocals beautifully! No bull! You're a lifesaver (baby)! Just plain fantastic!!!!!
I love the retro 80s vibe of the tune.
German interesting wonder why!!!

Being using this setting on percussive materials but never on vocals.. now I got the affirmation I need. Thanks a lot
Yes, the classic ssl compressor trick, this is gold. Just beware that the input level is also very important here. What is your gain stage, -18? Best regards!
Streaky Rocks - I use your side chain (vocals) compressor trick on the the reverb & delay aux tracks for ducking those effects on vocal tracks which works awesome (advanced stuff) very innovative stuff your always sharing - thanks so much
absolute gamechanger for making vocals sit just right and controlled in the mix!!
Bro when he says that this is not the normal gluey waves compressor, is he saying that its better? Cuz he always use that waves black compressor in a lot of videos. Idk if i undestood wrong.
@@nashse7enusually that comp is used for mix buss just for a bit of glue, that’s what I picked up anyway
Where can I hear your work?
Streaky's tutorials are the best ! wow ! vocals sound so much better
Your every tip is very useful ...im already getting great results in my mix
That slight boost of the eq really brought it out too 😮
wow. best tips i have ever seen for 5 years!
what about using Vocal Rider? it works a treat!
As soon as I heard the master I smiled. I'll try this trick foshure. Thanks a lot, and yes I'm subscribing.
Def gonna use this. I like using these channel strips as a one stop shop for the basic stuff I might like to have on a channel. Gain staging, HP, Gate, and first stage of compression. Thanks. Could you show pls the difference between Neve and SSL ? ✨🙏✨
This guy is the goat 🐐 took me to a new level.....I really appreciate you Streaky cause you don't have to do this ‼️💯
Great technique. I saw this before with an ssl channel for kick drums. Thank you
For sure smoothed it right out. The other obvious thing is .... the importance of getting a great vocal (or anything for that matter) is the capture which you / they for sure did. Curious are you using the Spaced Out plugin for the delay / reverb? Vocals sounded great.
Also good for SSL BUS COMP setting on Master, low or close to lowest threshold and then 1.50-2.00 Ratio max. . glues like hell. release on auto.
Thanks Streaky, I will be using that one.
Se tivesse suporte em português eu comprava seu curso amigo, sou do Brazil e admiro seu trabalho! abraço
@LanewoodStudios did this video around 2 weeks ago and the results are phenomenal on many different instruments.
Yeah works on bass really weep too
@thetathat8939 It's nice huh ;).
Streaky, what brand of white T-shirt are you using? Need one...Amazing tutorial btw!
Love your tip. It's so appreciated.
hey man great videos, so great in fact, that I actually subscribed the other day - dunno what anyone else is waiting for. Thanks for sharing a tremendous amount of technique. I've been at this for well over 20 years and it's just astonishing how much there is to learn.
I always use RX's Leveler module to process vocals for levels and thickening. Works wonders.
Excellent video, totally makes sense. Only comment would be that a verbal mention of correct gain level on audio region would be very helpful to many, as I’d assume this would make or break how well this technique works.
Not really if you’re not going in too hot then all should be good
Kevin Ward of MixCoach has been teaching this technique for many years. I use it on nearly everything.
So if you're working with an absolute dry vocal, should there be some filtering and compression before the SSL channel?
i am going to say this alot more times , he is def the most humble Engineer ive seen !
That's a really great technique! I've been using it for years, and it works every time!
love your content. Thank you so much. 🙌
Appreciate your videos very much! amazing as always!
I heard the eq boost at 2k first. Added some grit into the comp.

great tip,..great song.... can you put the link to the song somewhere ? :)
I tried this setting on my rap adlibs.....dope
What do u think about the „fast attack“ button ?
Great tip, thanks!
One other thing though:

I mean it's definitely true what they say "Use your ears".
Filters are not a "brick wall" drop off. Some of the SSL's have a 12dB per octave drop off in order to sound more natural.
Really appreciate this compressor trick. I’m also enjoying your mixing and mastering courses…..
Can this trick work with any compressor?
Hello
I hv a problem with distortion in vocal after mixing
Can you please suggest how to remove it
What would give the highest quality conversion Prism Lyra or Neumann MT48?
Sorry not heard the Neumann heard good things though
Bossman your videos are helpfull and i look forward to more theses people have nothing better to do in life
I do this. It was how I learned compression before anyone told me I was doing it wrong. I do this exact thing and then back off the threshold if there’s too much compression and it works really well and fast. I thought everyone did this lol.
Question , do we generally always leave it on -20db or is there a point in which we go back on the threshold?
I'm so happy to have found you on youtube, you are a game changer! 🤙🏼
Hello, thank the Gods for finding your channel.. the question is, can I use this method on drum group processing? as well as other sounds of the middle and overheads?
This setting sounds good on everything!
agree
Yeahhh it works so well i was surprised 😮😮😮😮😮at how gluey and it levels it excellently...but on a side note what is that song ...it sounds so good
I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your time and expertise - please ignore the wankers who don’t - my son and I truly enjoy your channel - keep the videos coming
Hi there, can this be done on an Analogue compressor plugin that has an Attack dial? If so, what setting would be ideal for the Attack or is it to taste? Thanks. Chris
Nice, I hear the difference.
Good A/B showcase 😊
The Legend of Streaky.........strikes again.
Just love your short but impacting and insightful videos, sir. Keep that up - cheers!
Goodness, I can dig it. 💪🏿💪🏿
Great video.
Excellent, it's the native channel strip that I use daily on the UAD Luna!
Great tip! I always struggle as the first thing I do after cleaning and subtracting is trying it with the glue comp or maxxvolume or even automation but these settings are money!!!
I think this is the best plugin for drums!
Solid bro! Definitely gonna try this on my next mix!! 😎💪🏿
Thank u !
I was gonna try this with a R comp but I didn’t know how!
I’ll use a ssl now
Another vocal effect I use on everything - I love the Waves Rvox, its an automatic vocal compressor but I whack it on all kinds of instruments. Partly because its automatic and I dont have to mess about with any controls, but also because it adds low end warmth while smothing out the volume.
Thanks for all the tips! It helps much !!
Thank you for this great video! I appreciate all your shared techniques and being very clear and concise. Yes, I did subscribe and follow you!
I don’t mind him using the same song for demo purposes, that song is so 🤤 🎶 🎧
This actually in this SSL UAD excelente Plugin and your great example, is Limiting.
At that Rádio it’s compressing not limiting the peaks
best teacher ever im currently taking his class he offical
This can be done with any compressor
Great video information 🤩👍
hi can somebody please reply! can this method replace the standard compressor in logic? like can i apply it to every audio everytime?
Thank you so very much and hello from Texas USA! Your videos are awesome!
can i do this with fabfilter proc2? i only have the ssl g compressor and i cant vary the ratio knob.
Professor Streaky in rare form..
I love your videos man, plus this video helped me out alot, but bro can please tell me what song is this, it’s in mostly every tutorial videos that I’ve seen of yours. 😅
I can hear the control after the ssl. I want to do it but I don’t know if my virtual slate rack has the ssl strip with comp.
Awesome! Thank you for sharing this.
In which cases will you go for this technique instead of using the standard way to compress ?
Do you think that this technique work well also with an SSL 9000J ?
not tried it...please report back
hey streaky, I use the waves ssl ev2 strip I have the pre eq option. should I use this compressor setting pre eq or post ?
Great tip, but just to clarify - at what level is the vocal going into the compressor? That would surely affect the ratio amount and therefore give a different result?
Yeah don’t go in hot, you can always place a gain plugin before if needed
I purchased the bx_console SSL 9000 J, will this tip be consistent with this model?
Really great technique and explanation. I only discovered this a couple of months ago and made a video about it as well showing it on instrument tracks :).
Nice, yeah it’s a winner
Can i use my ssl 4000E from plugin alliance?
Always great advice
Great technique thx, but what happened on bus 2? What kind of automation is it?
Wouldn't you like to know😉
Or just use the LA2A, it is basicaly the same setting 😃
Mate you have given us all such amazing knowledge and I am so glad I found you and my music has changed so much because I your k owdkege 😢
the only thing I'll say, is dial in the ratio not until it hits 6db, but to what sounds the best. mix with your ears!
I'm sharing to many Djays and producers to show you I appreciate what you do, God bless you, Galatians 6:9
Glad youtube recommended this channel i've actually gained alot from this guy.
and what is the attack time when your plugin has attack???
Thx! More tricks like these please.
Where did you learn this?
