Sir, I have been watching your videos for over 3 years I think...and you consistently drop gems. Thanks for the time you take to share this information to us mere audio mortals!!!
This may be 2 years old but just raised the quality of my vocals and Is going in my top 10 of must knows. Thanks, got confused on the side chaining part after reading the daws manual you explained it so when i read my Daw made perfect sense. First time releasing this week into all platforms so makign sure the sound is as clean as yours, like many of my techniques they were always double checked against your arsenal of greatness Ill share the love trust. When I get there.
This is a great effect chain. I don’t have the Manny EQ, so I’ll have to sub it out for H-EQ or the R-EQ. I haven’t learned how to side chain the music on vocal rider yet, so this vid was worthwhile for that tip alone.
Hope you all enjoy the tutorial and appreciate the feedback! The song is called Ways To Live if you want to check out the finished version :) bit.ly/sd-ways-to-live
@@coolzygaming4563 Baywood is a goat, Devvon Terrell is tough too but he’s more intermediate. I started off watching Crablord when I only had stock plugins then I upgraded. But with Sean Divine, Baywood & Devvon Terrell you’re in good hands my boy
Bro esas vocales funcionan perfecto. Por eso solo necesitas 3 pluggins. Pero no siempre es así. A veces sí se necesita 15 pluggins para lograr algo parecido, depende de la fuente que te llega.
Hey Sean! As always, you deliver some great videos with awesome information. I had a question... I noticed that you used that vocal chain in the "main vocal" channel opposed to routing it down to a FX,Group channel? For this particular process, do you recommend that it is best to do this (vocal rider, eq & deesser) on the main vocal & then then routes your main tracks to their Aux (FX,Group Channel) to additional compression, eq, etc?
I always use Deeser's on mostly vocals, cymbals and guitars to kill some high end that's a little too much until it sounds smooth and settled!!!! Btw this is very helpful thanks for this!!!!
Woh Sean was this all the processing done? It sounds so well mixed. Also what preamp do you use? I have a focusrite scarlet 2i2 gen 3. I am willing to shell out upto a grand if it makes a huge difference
I use the aphex channel and tracked these vocals with very light compression (2 or 3db gr max). Other than that, it’s just what you see here and the balancing on the mixer.
@@SeanDivine The Aphex Channel Strip? Wow that's $999 and right on my budget! Is it an interface as well? Do you got a video on it sean? Would love to see one!
They boost the high end and don’t deal With sibilance then ear f+++ me to death. That being said waves sibilance is 🔥🔥 , I heard SSL is creating one aswell!!
great video thumbs up from me all day 👍👍👍 quick question though might be a stupid question😬 but when it comes to the hook and the verse should they be equal loudness like for example should the hook be a little louder than the verse or should they be the same volume and if the same volume what would be the best LUFS number for them to both be hitting at? and again sorry if its a stupid question but I would really like to know bc I am a beginner
No definitely rules or levels that will work every time - use your ears and adjust accordingly! In some situations, it helps the arrangement / flow of the song to have a subtle lift on the hook.
The presets are an ideal starting point and can be customized… same approach and similar results :) just depends on how much you want to build the chain on your own!
Hey sean, I would be really happy if you could link your latest presets for vocal editing and your latest master preset, I'll buy them from you don't get it wrong, but recently I've had the problem that I somehow don't always get the voices on the beat, which I do mine is, for example, I can not estimate how loud the beat should be and how loud the voices should be mixed. I currently do it so that I take the maximum value of the melody, for example -12 DB and do all main tracks -12 DB and the rest of the stuff as it sounds good, but it still seems to me as if I'm still mixing over beat, there is probably a plugin except trackspacer because I don't check it at all.
boom. super timely. thanks sean as always ! quick quesiton.. is there any good substitute plugin for NLS channel? Either within Waves Gold or Logic stock plugin for a decent saturation control.. thanks in advance
The main vocal track input is mono. The studio rack loaded is m->s which changed the output / metering of the track to stereo. But then all plug-in instances within studiorack you loaded are in mono. Can you shed light on this? If you didn’t didn’t use studio rack and added those same plugins directly to logic channel strip, would you have used mono or stereo versions of those plugins? Does it matter? 🙏🏼
Sean what are your thoughts on using Soothe 2 in a vocal chain? I find myself really buying into the hype and keep thinking my mixes would sound way better if I used Soothe 2 even though I try my best with Pro-Q3's Dynamic EQ to cut/boost any frequencies I don't like... My ears are not that of a grammy engineer and I wonder if someone like me would just be better of using Soothe 2 lol
Love how you used vocal rider. I have a question tho. Why vocal rider gets so much hate tho, especially if u could use it like this and still have good dynamics?
My vocals choras with harmony clashing and cancelling each other please make a tutorial how upfront big stereo width choras and harmony mixing and lead vocal in the center 💕💕💕💕💌
Its a great starting point but if you want to have a big hit you will have to process a bit more ny comp distortion some sends from a doubler and such i like the pre mix ! You should see how drakes vocals are mixed theres alot that goes in to it thats why hes the number one artist in the world big fan of ur vids ill continue to watch and share
Hey Sean, when you record your vocals going in, do you have an external compressor or do you bus a signal to a track with compression? And if you do do that, which compressor do you use?
JT sry this is late imma engineer myself, all u have to use is a LA2A Opto style compressor using 2-3 db going into a pultec eq with default setting just to gel it together and what ever else u use (autotune, reverb, delay, etc) doesn’t matter what plug-ins u use as long as it’s sound good that’s all that matters
I noticed that you had the rack on the lead vocal. Is there stuff that you do with the double and wide panned vocal layers that you can advise? I don't like to do doubles so much because it can get messy however I feel like any tools can help a bit more in my process.
The BGVs for this one are run through the same chain, same aux. I just balanced them and wide panned the punches! The backing layer (lead double) is mixed low. You can use them for tone / thickness but you don't necessarily want them to be obvious.
Dynamic mics definitely help with noise rejection / echo. That said, the 7b has quite a bit of self noise and requires a lot of clean preamp gain. There are better options on the dynamic side.
Can we just talk about how clean these recordings are before processing ! Foundation is KEY ! well done bro
Exactly!
Fr plus the preamps & acoustics from his recording make an impact 💯
Sean, this is the first tutorial that shows how to use vocal rider correctly. Thank you, I wasn’t even looking for that portion.
