I started bodyboarding around 1988. Living in the Netherlands, this was a challenge. First of all our coastline isn't producing optimal waves often. And the other thing was that it was very hard to find equipment, the sport was almost non existent back then. The only videomaterial i could find was from the program "high five" that was on TV here for a very limited time. Photos were also difficult to find, there were some surfmagazines here that covered it a little. But also surfmagazines were rare. I had to build my own bodyboard back then, from styrofoam and epoxy. It worked fine, but it looked simple ;-) Today bodyboards and equipment are readily available in many stores. BUt the coastline is still the same. When there is a storm, we may find waves, but they break irregularly. Only a few spots in the Netherlands can produce nice waves, but also not like France/Hawaii or such.
I’m still riding pe boards now I live in cold water, pp is like surfing on a wooden door. 2 stringers in the pe but they break in nicely after a while. Long love 90’s boogin tho. Full of great characters and misfits 😊
I'm gonna get a lot of heat for this. but after watching it again after all these years, I think that Severson shoulda won. He had 2 good rides and that Backdoor shack was so deep he needed an oxygen tank, yet he came out with the snowball. the roll on the biggest wave by Stewart was sick, but it didn't barrel once nor did wave have shape. just deep take-off bottom turn and rollo. the wave he did a air reverse was fkn sick but even that one he wasn't deep and had to stall for tube. Severson shoulda gotten first and 2nd was really a toss up between holland/stewart. just being honest cuz I let time pass and re-watched it with 'un-biased' eyes.
I dont care what anyone thinks. Bodyboarding back then had more style. Mainly due to more flex in boards than now. This newschool stiff shit has no flow. Pe boards have more flow
Everything about them was better. Better boards, flippers, clothes, sunnies, hairstyles, magazines, the brands, the cars, the girls😍, the music, the parties, my mates, my adventures. 90’s is my absolute favourite era, straight up.... Also it was possible to make a meaningful living from being a professional bodyboarders as a younger person. It’s so sad that it fell off as a sponsored sport. It was such a massive sport... A lifestyle..... @Chris Brown -I fully get what you mean about the PE boards. The flex. The bounce. The flow these thick boards had.... it made the riding style something that can’t be beat. Long live old school bodyboarding🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙
This is awsome, almost 30 years ago, how time passes quickly, feeling nostalgic 😊

They were a little slower but bending the inside edge allowed you to so fine tune performance in the barrel.
