Double Beat Exercise to Develop Ghost Notes on Drumset from the PAS Classroom with Michael Dawson

In this exercise, ‪@MikeDawsonDrums‬ shows how to start with the left hand playing double-beat, then play beats 2 and 4 as rim shots or accents, adding beats 1 and 3 on the bass drum and eighth notes on the high hat, to develop ghost notes.

He hosts a weekly podcast, Drum Candy, where he interviews world-famous drummers on a range of topics. He was previously managing editor for Modern Drummer Publications, and also produced and co-hosted The Modern Drummer Podcast. He has a bachelor’s in music education from West Virginia University and a master’s in music from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. He is associate professor in music journalism at UArts and percussion instructor at WVWC.
