  • This is just a quick update video. For those unaware: the Chinese government heavily filters their Internet connections and blocks access to most social media and Google services. That means no Google, GMail, UA-cam, Facebook, Twitter, etc. Luckily it is not too difficult to get around their filters. In this video I show my Windows laptop and Android smartphone bypassing the "Great Firewall of China" by connecting to the Raspberry Pi VPN server that I setup in a previous video.
Here's my earlier video where I explain how to setup the Raspberry Pi VPN Server by using OpenVPN and Stunnel:

What ports do you you for stunel and openvpn? Does it have to be 443 so it appears to be like https?

The default port used by OpenVPN is fine. Stunnel is using port 443 because it is the default HTTPS port number. It should work fine on other ports, but using port 443 or 80 would make it more likely to work everywhere. Some places filter out everything but ports 80 and 443, as a crude attempt to block everything but "the web."

Super video- thanks - and the Raspberry Pie (RP) one- about VNS server (your video from last year) - was excellent too -If you can produce a video - how to configure RP to be the IP6 only DNS server (without Google DNSs gates) - UKNOFconf has videos about DNS

Shadowsocks(ss) is popular than VPN in China. Buy a VPS for a month, install and run shadowsocks server program. On your phone and pc, install shadows client program. For VPS the most popular three in China are Bandwagonhost, DigitalOcean and Linode. The first one is the cheapest and can setup ss for a little click. The other two require some linux cmd to setup ss server program.

What is the benefit of having Stunnel and SSLDroid on top of OpenVPN?

Hi. It helps to get around bans on using VPNs. The Chinese government filters Internet access, and uses "deep packet inspection" to try and detect VPN usage. Stunnel wraps OpenVPN in SSL (so it looks like https) which makes it look like you're accessing a secure web page instead of using a VPN.

upgrdman Ohhh! Thanks for the quick reply! I'll have to set that up! I'm pretty sure my ISP throttles my net when I'm connected to my VPN. I get normal throughput for 20-30min and then nothing until I disconnect.

Hi,, I have a couple of questions maybe you can help me,, I noticed you are using some software (OpenVPN and stunnel), but i remember Windows 10 has a section for VPN configuration so I was wondering if using that wouldn't work too, or what's the difference?. And I really wanna go and try to make the raspberry pi "server" you showed on your other video.. it would be my first approach to raspberry pi do you think the raspberry zero W would just work well and fast? i normally use wifi at home so it would be interesting if that would work ,, I live in China most of the time ,, now I'm back home for a short while and I want to go back to China being able to access a personal VPN at home ,, It's really annoying that so many sites are blocked there. PS: Congratulations you explain yourself very well on your videos

Thanks. I have not tried Windows' built-in VPN support because China looks carefully for VPN traffic and blocks it. By using Stunnel to "wrap" OpenVPN, it makes the traffic look like HTTPS traffic. Using a Pi Zero W would probably work fine, but I prefer wired networking for reliability.

Does it still work? Or deep inspection became better after five years?

Does it still work, or is it killed off by China 😂? I'm trying to spin one up of myself too.

I'm not in China right now, but it worked fine half a year ago. It'll probably still work today.

Amazing! but the proprietary pi VeryProtectedNetwork (I assume u know why I'm stretching the words as they are :D) host has to be outside of C first :( I'm stuck with being limited, can't even update my pi without getting no sleep, the only tme to give them an update are from 4-7am, even then, the speed can be sometimes as ridiulous as few hundred bits/s LOL, and after posting this tube account will be messed up for a few days, yay... but its nice to share this feeling with someone who had the experience and knows what he is doing.

Thanks. Yes, the server would need to be outside of China, and ideally also setup and tested while outside of China. I feel your pain. With or without a VPN, China's Internet access is unbelievably slow at times. Good luck!
