Thank you for making this video. I have been trying to debate with myself on going all in on 12v or 18/20v tools. This video definitely helped.
Glad it could help. There are great tools with either but for a lot of people I think the 12 volts can provide a lot of what people are looking for.
Milwaukee 12V nailgun (23ga pin nailer) is my favourite in that class. The 12V rotary hammer replaced my bigger Bosch for home use, so there's that too. 🙂

Good question, and great video. In the last year I've gotten into the 12v line of dewalt over years of using 18v tools and I must say I'm glad I made the switch. The tools are more powerful than the 18v brushed tools from 10 plus Years ago. I love the one handed recip saw as well because there are times cutting wood,pvc and even metal that tool can get into places that the large recip saw can't while still providing enough power. I also use 3 to 5 amp batteries with almost all my 12v and even a 5amp doesn't put much weight on to the tool as well.
That is one great thing about the 12v tools... the bigger batteries don't add a ton of weight but do make a difference on run time. Overall the total package is just smaller and usually powerful enough. Love the username by the way!
I'm a big fan of Dewalts 12v line thank you for this video love my 12v circular saw I use that more than my atomic circular saw and find myself using the 12v impact and drill more often than my 20v tools

I agree with your picks. I picked up the M12 screwdriver because it was such a good deal and I find I use it all the time! I've given several away as presents as well.
I like the dewalt screwdriver a little bit more but I still use the M12 (non-fuel) screwdriver regularly. It's a nice tool!
My M12 3/8" stubby impact wrench, right angle die grinder and rotary tool have served me really well doing car restoration work, and the non-Fuel ratchet it also surprisingly nice. I also have the Gen 2 hammer drill and non-surge driver, and while I haven't used them much so far as I mostly do auto work, they're done well the few times I've needed them. But I'm going to put them to good use soon as I need to drill out a bunch of snapped fasteners on our cars.
Sounds like a nice setup. The M12 lineup really shines in terms of how many tools they have like for more specialized trades like automotive, electrical and plumbing.

If I were a pro or even a more serious DIYer, fixing up and restoring cars and such or working on trucks and lots of work at home, I'd probably branch out to M18 and other lines (and I do have some slightly older Craftsman and Black & Decker tools), DeWalt especially but also Ryobi, Makita, etc.
But the M12 line is more than good enough for my needs as I only work on our cars with the occasional light home project like installing shelves, and I'd recommend that anyone looking to so some serious auto, wood or house work give it serious consideration. Their die grinder is simply amazing and such a time saver.
I recently got the m12 bandfile it sure has come in handy for those tight spots.
I don’t have much need for it but it looks awesome from what I have seen.
I have most of the DEWALT 12v tools. Love them the Screw gun is a must. Just putting stuff together and around the house small projects it’s perfect. All the other random tools like inflators cordless shop vac Ryobi.

M12 Fuel hackzall 2520-20 and the M12 bandsaw 2529-20, and the extended reach ratchets. When I was in the dewalt 12V platform I loved my one handed folding recip saw.
I've heard great things about the band file. I ended up with an 18v hackzall simply because of a battery promo but I think I would have been happy with the M12 too.
I use only M12 in my job, and I was at a crossroad a few months ago, the Gen2 hammer drill was just hard work when I have ~100 1" spade holes on pine to drill in a house rough in. I was considering giving up and moving to M18, which I hate because of the extra bulk and weight....but then they released that M12 gen 3 and better batteries...saved the day for me!
The Gen 3 was a great upgrade from the Gen 2.
I’m invested in 12V tools from Milwaukee, Bosch and DeWalt. I really enjoy using these smaller, compact tools for most of the jobs I do. Oh, and my latest 12V tool is the M12 Fuel oscillating tool. Super cool.

Thanks! Looking bad I should've put more bosch in the video... I only have one of their 12v tools but I nearly picked up the 12v sander today. I would've but I worry about long it will run on the batteries I have.

Were you looking at the Bosch 12v orbital sander or the finish sander? I have both and haven’t had a chance to give either of them a try yet so I can’t report on battery life. I have several 2Ah batteries and one of the 6Ah batteries. Curious to see the 2Ah performance.

I love my m12 tools I am a diy with the non-fuel hammer drill. The non fule screwdriver and hack saw the fuel impact driver and the same tire inflator. Great tools and last a long time
I take the inflator any time I go on a road trip. It works great!
I built/installed an entire kitchen with Skil 12v tools. I've started using them more than my 20v stuff.
12v had come a long way.
In my personal opinion a 12v system is more than enough for average DIY person, even when working on cars using an impact wrench. You just need to get a bigger battery for Milwaukee tools.
For tire air pump, I bought one at a harbor freight; PITTSBURGH AUTOMOTIVE 12V 100 PSI High Volume Air Inflator. Its only $30 and will inflate all 4 tires with out me having to carry a spare battery in my car.
My favourite 12v is the dewalt impact, it is very compact and its easy to control. The precision mode is fantastic as you can basically use it as a screwdriver.
It's a good one as well.
I've had several jobs where we've framed out finished basements using nothing more than the Bosch PS22 screwdriver and Bosch PS41 impact driver for my drilling and driving needs. I only felt that I needed an 18v tool when drilling 3/4" holes through 100+ year old floor joists to run Romex for electrical work on those jobs. I have both Bosch & Milwaukee 12v tools (all automotive for Milwaukee), but I greatly prefer the Bosch models and wish they would release more of their catalog in North America. If Bosch offered a 12v 3/8 ratchet, I could eliminate the M12 line from my tool boxes.
The m12 tire inflator is a great tool I keep one in my car for just in case
I love the Milwaukee 4 in 1 but my favourite impacts and drills are the DEWALT DCF850 impact driver with 1.7ah Powerstack and the Metabo HPT DV18DEX drill & WH18DC impact driver. Compact 18v tools like these are now very close to 12v tools in size and weight. I see the new Milwaukee M18 drill and impact driver are now actually smaller in length than the M12 Fuel tools. For me it’s why I haven’t invested in many of the superb 12v tools you’ve shown in the video.
Its a fair point. The only thing that 12v tools have is the smaller and lighter battery but that does still come with a trade off of potential run time.
My dad has some 10+ year old 18v ridgid stuff still kicking just fine but I think i will pick up an m12 drill driver gor furniture assembly and robot building. Pretty much everything i would do day to day. I still have the 18v for when work needs to get done.
I think you find that the top end M12 stuff in the current generation is quite capable and might even beet some of those older tools. It's pretty impressive stuff.
If they provide the tools you need yes. I started in the M12 line and they did all I needed. I’m a DIY guy but tacked tons of stuff from the house to automotive.

As a small engine technician i bought into the DeWalt 12v extreme setup, it has everything i need in that lineup. Ratchet, screwdriver, 1/4" impact, and 3/8" dcf903 "higher torque" impact and I've yet to get anything across my bench that can't be removed by thatdcf903, but i use the screwdriver 80% of the time 1/4" 10%, and the ratchet and higher torque 3/8" about 5% each
They have done a good job at expanding that lineup. I hope they keep it up.
Nice thing about certain 18v is that they offer a compact version which can often rival 12v size outside of the batteries. Additionally it allows expansion into a larger more comprehensive 18v. I got both 12v and 18v, and it depends on your needs.
If you’re asking yourself 12v vs 18v, you will likely be okay with 12v only. But bigger more demanding tools like circular saws, angle grinders, reciprocating saws are either exclusive, optimal to 18v or corded.
I agree with you. If you think you are going to need the higher draw tools, especially often, then the sub compacts are a nice alternative.
I started with the M12 system. Love it. Then I wanted to pick up a 4” angle grinder just for sharpening mower blades. No such thing in M12. I’ve added DEWALT for my grinder, saws and a couple of impacts. Love those as well. I’m comfortable with 2 battery systems.
Good call. Yeah a grinder would fly though a 12 volt battery. They have some of the die grinder tools but nothing as big as that.
The M12 straight and right angle die grinders can handle mower blades pretty well, I've read. I have the right angle and while I haven't used it on a mower yet it's done really well by me working on my car, mostly for rust removal but also cleaning gasket surfaces, paint and undercoating removal and smoothing out rough surfaces. Plus being smaller and held with only one hand it might be more precise than an angle grinder.

Dude the m12 fuel multitool has got to be my favorite tool I have. It works better than any 18/20 volt multitool I’ve tried, including the XR. I look for reasons to use mine. 😂

It doesn’t work better then the M18 no auto start and the runtime is terrible in comparison. But it is an awesome tool.
@@steffendetrickthe M18 fuel multi tool is amazing and the size is comparable to the M12. However, the auto setting always gets me into trouble. Because it ramps up from almost nothing to 10 in a second as soon as it feels resistance. I've definitely scratched up some trim by mistake by using the auto setting.
@@norzoloco1 the auto start can ramp up a little fast in, but I’m prepared for that so I use it in that capacity. The big dig with me on M 12 high demand tools is the run time.

Between my DeWalt 12v drill, impact driver, and 1/2 impact wrench, I hardly ever go for my larger 18v tools anymore! Looking the add the 12v circ saw as well. DeWalt's 12v Xtreme tools are absolutely fantastic, they've got a winner with that line.

On the inflator I use the 9ah waitley battery from Amazon I've had it for three years now and it's truly a 9ah battery I use it on my f250 super duty with 10 ply tires at 80 pounds a tire and this little gem 💎 does the job like you I had bought this years ago and the 9ah battery with it for 39.00 it's well worth the money!! The m12 oscillation tool is as powerful as the m18 fuel with better ergonomics every tool you have mentioned I own and absolutely 💯 % agree with you! If you cannot get what you need done with these tools add an impact wrench and a bigger saw and that's basically everything you need!!
Impact wrench is what I am missing for sure. And yeah the inflator is great. Never seems to fail me and yet nice and compact.
The DCF601 12v screwdriver is my go around the house. I'be built countless Ikea sets, sanded/polished headlights, drunkenly assembled Santa's gifts on x-mas eve at 2am for the kids, it's the first tool I reach for when my wife wants something done. The clutch is perfect for not splitting or stripping whatever particle board or plastic piece of junk I'm working on. I even bought a set of 1/4 hex shank drill bits for poking holes in studs for mounting stuff on the walls. A+ tool on its own, but I wish dewalt would build out the 12v line to compete better with the completeness of the M12 line.
I gifted mine to someone who needed and I have the installation drills that can occupy the same space. But I do miss it.
Also, I'd like to point out that I have the Bosch PS40 10.8v (same battery) impact driver that was released in perhaps, 2007/2008. Both 10.8v batteries are still 100% functional and fully charge. I don't think many other brands (perhaps Makita) will have that longevity on their battery packs.
The M12 Inflator is must have. I have had mine for a few years and honestly would hate to live without it.
I love mine. I know the m18 would be stronger but for what I drive it’s great!
Definitely well put together, and I think 12V tools have really made a jump in performance over the past 5-10 years with the introduction of brushless motors as lithium battery cells. Super cool to see how the tech has improved and tool performance with it!

I know that Bosch are not that famous in America, but they also have a very extensive 12v line with some excellent tools, like the planer, the orbital sander, the edge trim router, all sorts of drill-drivers and many more. Sadly not all of the tools are brushless yet, but the ones that are - are pretty awesome.
I want the sander pretty bad... but if I get it I'll want the bigger batteries and then it just seems pricey. I have the 18v sander and I love it. Best cordless sander on the market in my opinion.
@@TinkerWithTools Yes, you will need the 4Ah and the 6Ah batteries, pretty much for every machine, apart from the drill-drivers for serious work. The sander is very fine, but the jewel in the crown for me - is the planer. It is an amazing little, one handed tool, one can not imagine the applications it could be used in, almost like a multi-tool for carpentry and framing / finishing jobs. It was a unique design on the market for quite long, but now I see that Milwaukee are coming out with their 12V ''copy'' of this tool.
I own the dewalt 12v screw/drill you have there and at two years old seems to have weaken, 1/4” hole and down. The size thickness is also a negative. Which caused me to buy M12 gen3 drill hammer impact kit $219 with three batteries at HD.
Any way go with the battery you have the most of. My 18v are Ridgid

Big Red has a real good 12v brushless screwdriver. I have it, and it works great. Take a look and give it a try.
I have that one too and still use. The DEWALT has replaced it somewhat just because it’s light and more compact but I still like the tool.
I do the tires on my work van with that M 12 inflator which holds 83 psi. I can top it off with the M 12 no problems. Before I got my tire plugged, it would go down to about 35 psi sometimes and I could get it back up to 83 on a single battery With a bar or two left

I do like the m12 tools, specially the multi tool. When it comes to the drills, its not my first choice. I grab my hilti multi head driver or my makita m18 drills which are awesome. I cant get comfortable with the m12 handle even though my hands are not small. Can never feel like I have a full control over the tool with the thick, slippery grip.
Yeah the grip seems to be the main thing people don’t like about them.

That’s a nice cross section of popular tools. I have been using cordless tools since the old stick Makita 9.6 volt and DeWalt pistol grip 9.6 / 12 volts. The power with the brushless and lithium ion batteries now, I think makes us spoiled and we forget how much they can do even in a professional environment.
The 18+ volt tools are fine, but especially as I get older I appreciate the lighter package associated with a good 12 volt tool brand. I have Milwaukee and Bosch in 12’s and like specific tools in each for where they can get into, and accomplish.
Too many people write them off, much to their detriment. While tool makers are seemingly obsessed with ever increased voltages. I see a diminishing marginal return horizon rapidly approaching.
I think for the types of tools that I featured here tonight (except maybe the saw) 12 volts is enough to get a lot done. And I agree that they are overlooked and even neglected by a lot of manufacturers. Sub-compact 18v tools are the real threat to the 12v tools as I see it but even those are a bigger. but for bigger power draw tools like bigger saws, I have enjoyed the extra volts on my XGT saw.
I get a fair bit of flak for running M12 tools when my colleagues run 18v 'man tools'. Watching people use an impact to install wood screws with an 8+ AH battery hanging off it is, to me, the epitome of dumb...

I'm interested in the smallest, lightest, most compact thing thstvwill perform the task.
I love my M12 Fuel Multitool and my high speed ratchet. Those are the only tools I can't think I'd ever switch to 18V. They're convenient, lightweight and compact.
On the other hand I wouldn't settle with a 12V circular saw, from what I've seen they're just underpowered even compared to the 18V brushed 6 1/2" circular saw that I own. Since I use the circular saw for straight cuts on plywood and OSB the lightness and compactness doesn't mean as much as performance to me
Fair point on the saw. I have gone through plywood with it and it does okay. Better than the cheaper 18v saws I have used in the past but not as good as the bigger 18v saws I have for sure.
Also I have the regular ratchet and I think they have come along way with them since I bought it several years ago. The high speed one is intriguing for sure.
I think it really depends on your needs for most trades 18v is kinda the sweet spot i think most companies need to just make compact 18v tools we dont really need 12v tools if they just added compact 18v to their lines.
i feel like 12v is great but they keep certain tools in the 12v line.
just to make you buy into another system and set of batteries. I'm personally useing mostly metabo hpt and makita 40v
18v compacts are a good alternative for smaller tools. The weight is usually a little more because of the extra battery size and they can't compete on how small the batteries of the 12v tools are, but you usually get a performance bump over 12v when you chose the compact/subcompact tools. We are rich with options.
Most of my core power tools are M12 after starting with Ridgid 12v then having to switch. My Ridgid 18v circular saws and a Gen5X Ridgid hammer drill, the new Hercules impact, and Ryobi angle grinder that’s about the only over 18v tools I use. The Ridgid hammer drill and Hercules impact ride the bench unless they are needed.
The M12 lineup covers a lot of things for sure.
Now my M12 compact blower I like using as my delicate area leaf blower. It has plenty of power for my wife’s flower beds without blowing all the mulch out. I actually prefer it over my Ryobi 40v leaf blower. It is very powerful but I don’t like the trigger setup. The power isn’t variable speed but more stepped speed if you know what I mean. I do wish that Milwaukee would make a Fuel version of the compact blower!
The Hilti 12v screwdriver is the best one the market, i use it with adapter to Dewalt 12v battery, my go to for a long time now..

I have M12 and M18 fuel impacts and hammer drills (and more) but I really want that M12 installation driver. But I'm having trouble explaining to my wife why I need a 9th drill. Help?

Bosch 12 v is recommended if you can find at a good deal. ( DeWalt extreme if you find on sale ) ( Milwaukee M12 if it's on sale as well as good ( heck dare I say it Makita 12 v line some stuff if you don't mind the Makita gnome chasing you down 😅😂 but what you like just having fun
All of the first three are good choices. The makita 12v’s aren’t bad but they have been neglected in the last several years in my opinion
Since DeWalt made 1.7ah powerstack battery. it's almost the size of 12v battery. So small 20v tools like makita subcompacts techinically could be like 12v because they are both slider lines. No big difference anymore
You are right. Sub compacts typically pack more power than 12v counterparts. I still see a place for 12v tools though but I know they aren't for everyone.

At the end of the day an M12 Hole Hog might kinda suck ! That said the M12 die grinders have superceded my M18 Die grinders !
Double batted M12 might be a total compact ass kicker !
Not enough strong. For job sites 18v is king. For heavy task corded tools gotta come out. 12v is for the house.
