I really like that her hair is red, and she uses ice types. I understand color coordination from a character design point of view, but its also kind of immersion breaking at times. "Oh you want to train a fire type? Sorry, you were born with green hair, so its bugs or grass for you" Loreli helps break that up a little.
Bugsy has purple hair, and yet he doesn’t have a Butterfree, Venonat, or Venomoth on his team. Lol

@@jaernihiltheus7817 clothes are much easier to change and select than hair colour. You CAN change hair colour but it takes a lot of maintenance to keep it consistent.

The art still leans into chibi territory with exaggerated head and eyes, rounded features and relatively short limbs. But they found a good balance for it.

Her Black, White and Red colour scheme is really cool. As the first Ice Trainer of the series, she was solid.

I gotta give props to Let's Go for Lorelei's hot redesign and have her show up to beat up some Rocket grunts. Her suddenly appearing while sitting on her Lapras really makes her looks dominant and cool.
It’s hard to explain, but there’s something about the original Elite Four that just screams “coworkers who also became unlikely best pals” which I’ve always really liked. They’re such a misfit bunch, it’s fun.
Read the Adventures manga, they REALLY lean into their relationships with one another there. Good stuff
It's been a long time since I've played these games, so I didn't realize all of the "sexy librarian" energy some of her designs had.
Sexy librarian vibes was probably written at the top of her concept art, then underlined twice and circled. It's 100% a consistent feature of her designs.

Ah Lorelei...the first character 4 yr old me went "I want to look like that when I grow up" to.
I also dig the ice hair accessory in her let’s go design. It just adds that little bit of detail reminding you that she’s an ice type trainer without going all out on it.

I also like Loreali’s crystally hair accessory in the Lets Go games, it’s just a subtle hint to the Ice theming
Love seeing the Ice Trainers who all get depicted as stoic and professional (Lorelei, Pryce, Glacia), then we get Candice, Wulfric, Melony, and Grusha who are just here to have fun with it!
Grusha is the perfect middle ground between the two groups. It’s all he’s got left after his career ending snowboarding injury, so he tries to make the most of what he’s got, but he still takes it seriously since Geeta is a fickle lady who could strip him of his position if he doesn’t show results.
I do like how Wulfric talks about ice types as being hard as rock, but fragile, but the shards being sharp enough to cut.

I want to propose that the Elite 4 are dual-type specialists, at least in Gen. 1. Lorelai is Water/Ice, Bruno is Fighting/Rock, Agatha is Ghost/Poison, & Lance is Dragon/Flying.
I actually think this would have been a good way to distinguish the elites from the leaders: a diverse specialization. They'd still have a pattern, but how neat would it be if an Elite 4 member said "you fought my students, Leaders 2 & 6. You think you know their types' weaknesses. Now face the challenge of their synergy!"

For the simple reason that gen 1 pokemon are scarce.
Bruno has the power of the mountains while he trains.
Agatha has the power of sinister energy with the poison and ghost types.
But because Gastly is the only ghost type.
Say what you will about Let's Go, but they SERIOUSLY understood the assignment when it came to character design.
Like, it also references Misty's sisters from the anime for her gym trainers, something even Yellow version never did.
Pokémon Adventure’s Lorelei will always be one of my faves. The tragedy of her story paired with the coldness of her actions create a really fun character. How she interacts with the rest of the kanto elite 4 and how she influences many characters in lasting ways gives her such presence in the story

I think an ice trainer concept I've never seen used but that would be real cool would be one modeled after extreme swimmers. You know the types that go swim in arctic waters, with some futuristic diving suit...
The funny thing is that they were very close to that concept in Galar, with Route 8 involving people in bathing suits in ice-cold areas.
The main thing also is that she gets that neat little ice like hair tie! Which is a nice more subtle presentation of the ice typing!

I always found it funny how, if you look at her without already knowing about her team, you would have no idea what type she uses. Kinda like how, when I first saw Phoebe from Gen 3, I assumed she uses Water Type because she's almost dressed like she's ready to go to the beach...only for her to actually be a Ghost Type specialist.

Yeah, she's always been a redhead. It's just that the shade of red has varied. I remember when she showed up in the anime it was a very cool-toned red, almost purple.
I think the hair is supposed to give her a pop of color, while also being slightly subdued to conform with the ice queen theme
It is a great choice too to make her the professional mature lady as the first member of the Elite 4. The gym leaders are local stars but this gives the Elite 4 the "Elite" vibe it needs to not just seem like more gym leaders.
They kinda did the same in Gen 9 with Rika, although the professional image is lost with Poppy being an E4

Honestly I like her FR/LF Look - yes it looked sporty, but I feel it alslo feel.. casual elegant. Like she looks how I envision an Office Suit Lady on a Casual Friday.

I don't think those are stockings. They look much more like tights or pantyhose. Glad to see Lorelei's outfit for the LG games is at least a little more practical for a character who spends their time around ice type Pokémon on a regular basis. Also, my favorite redesign. Very attractive.
Lorelei is my favorite of the Elite Four. She worked for Team Rocket in the manga, and definitely was a force to be reckoned with.
I'm sure quite a few people were very disappointed that Loreli didn't insult them more
Me seeing her lets go design: MOTORBOOOOOOOOAAATTT
While I’m sure she has her fans, I feel like she is probably the most forgotten of the elite 4 in Gen 1.
Lance gets a free pass since he was the dragon trainer, Agatha as the ghost trainer made her stand out as the creepy old woman motif and Bruno was the fighter who looked like he would fight pokemon by himself if he wanted to.
Lorelei isn’t forgettable but going through the elite four just now, I realized I remember the other three names first before remembering her name (even after watching this video).
Bruno probably would've been more forgettable, his design is kinda just "random buff karate guy" that you could see as a background character and not think twice about. But he came back in gen 2's e4, and Loreli didn't. It doesn't help that her replacement has the same hair color, so some people just mash Will and Loreli up in their memories. Agatha is far enough removed from Karen that she doesn't suffer the same fate.
Ice Type is so uncommon in Gen 1 that I regularly forget it wasn't introduced in Gen 2.

The little glare she gives you in Let's Go is EVERYTHING to me.
One thing I'm glad about Pokémon Masters EX is that it breathes new life to older trainer characters which inspire new fan art. Just gotta wait for a Sygna Suit for her or whatever they call alts for characters in that game.

Before FR/LG settled on making her a redhead, she was depicted as having purple hair in both the manga and the anime (more of a reddish-purple), and as a brunette in Stadium. I think the most consistent aspects of her design aside from her overall “office lady” theme are her glasses and her well, ya know..
Somehow missed her hair in the anime...
Another thing to add. She's quite emotional, but composed.
In FRLG, you can find her house. She collects plushies and presumably hugs them. It's mentioned she usually buys a plushie whenever she's sad/frustrated.
A new plushie appears every 25 times the player defeats the Elite Four and it reaches the maximum number of plushies after 200.
I love Lorelei, but specifically her portrayal in the Adventures manga. She was a villain in the earlier arcs and she was genuinely quite terrifying.

So fun fact: in Gen 1, Ice type was actually really scary. There were no good rock or fighting moves to deal with ice, steel didn’t exist, and using fire was hampered by the fact that most ice types in Gen 1 were part water. In other words, Ice had effectively almost no meaningful weakness.
This meant that bulky Ice types were really hard to handle, and there were a bunch of them. Lorelei would’ve been scary if her pokemon had actual movesets.
She got a kid friendly Bayonetta look
Her design hasn’t always been consistent, I mean just look at the anime. However, I feel as time has gone on the series has honed in on that “older woman” charm they’re going for and it’s more clearly reflected in her design.
Surprisingly not the only dominant red-haired ice lady
Honestly, the read hair is a genius twist in her design. Marking an ice-trainer as a cold professional, unforgiving business-person n fits ice as a type perfectly. But the red hair hints that there is something more, a passion behind all of that, something uncontrollable that just waits to break out of the highly controlled outer shell. Which also fits the ice type perfectly. The resulting internal conflict is great.
Maybe the red is a reference to how ice can feel like it burns if its cold enough.

For me personally her red hair makes me think of velvet or some sort of classy red dress, especially in Lets Go where it’s a slightly cooler tone than before. Gives me the vibes of someone who’s decently well-off and has a lot of authority in whatever office she’s involved with.
Her Pokémon Adventures Manga appearance is legendary. She was legit freezing hands together of opposing trainers so they couldn’t use their Pokémon against her. Cool concept. Actually the whole Elite 4 arc of the manga was excellent
My favorite Elite 4 member, she was the perfect introduction to the class of trainers. Her appearance made the trainer know you're not taking on a gym leader, but something more serious

As fun as it is to have really on the nose over the top characters sometimes I’m kinda glad they didn’t just make her “light blue because ice.” Makes her feel a lot less one dimensional! I remember reading the manga where Yellow fought her and being amazed :)

I like the higher collar in the redesign and could see it adding a bit of edge and mystery with her current look, but as it stands her design is amazing to me

In the gen 3 lore as well. A key item or some such tells you details about different celebrities and one of them is that she's a plushie fanatic.

Fun fact: in fire red and leaf green in one of the sevii islands you can find her house and she owns a little doll but for every 20 times you've beat the elite four she adds one more, which implies she goes on a retail therapy session because of you
I've always appreciated that she's a standout Pokemon trainer design that goes really subtle on the theming, and looks less like someone who was just born, lives and breathes their specialist type, but is a regular person who happens to like a type. Especially the firetruck red hair, great subversion of ice themes to have that be probably the most defining colour in her palette.
Other examples I love are characters like Phoebe, a cheerful woman with a greyish pixie cut and blue islander inspired sarong and tube top with two big flowers on her head who favours...the ghost type? Because it turns out, it's not just goth girls who can communicate with the dead. Sometimes it's just random beachgoers.
And Karen who is just, a fashionable lady with blue hair, a gold singlet and white capris, not even resembling any of her pokemon or anything, who uses the dark type because she likes the dark type and wants to encourage people to just train whatever Pokemon they like best.
And while she isn't elite 4, Jasmine is great because she's literally just. A polite young woman, with little pigtails. She isn't wearing any jewellery or anything, the hairclips even look plastic and the shoes fabric, no metallics in her design, even the mineral reference in her name is only in the English version, and a massive stretch, with closer ties to be being directly named after a plant and type of calming tea. Her typing? STEEL TYPE.
Why is she a steel type specialist?

The gym describes her as the "steel clad defense girl!" She gets more cameos and dialogue than most other gym leaders, but she's still just kind of gentle, shy, likes contests, and travelling. Best connection I can make, is that she is the embodiment of a Soothe Bell, whoch appears to be made of metal.
