OASIS: Their Top 5 Signature Rhythm Guitar Parts (Using The Xvive U2)

- Oasis had the knack of writing songs that were instantly recognisable just from the rhythm guitar parts & chords. In this video I break down and demonstrate my top 5 favourite Oasis rhythm guitar riffs of all time.

Many thanks, JH.
At last, Angel Child gets the absolute credit it deserves!! My favourite oasis song to play and no one ever refers to it! Thank you
I’m a rhythm guitar player because of Noel Gallagher. The music of Oasis, and Noel Gallagher High Flying Birds gives me the inspiration to write and record my own music.
Same here. And I picked up the guitar mainly for songwriting as well.
My songwriting completely changed because of Oasis
Great video
Some sublime chord progressions and top line vocal melodys on Be Here Now.
Thanks for including the tabs! Really helped me learn the Morning Glory rhythm part. I've never seen tabs more correct than the ones you provided.
as always James, another top top video, so watchable, keep them coming
Thanks, will do!
I can't wait until Noel does an interview with you. It will happen eventually.
@@iguanasseebetter4824 Stop being a silly c*nt, Noel. Do an interview with James.
Guitar sounds amazing! James, thank you for your thoroughly-made videos!
Greetings from Córdoba Argentina 🇦🇷🇦🇷 congratulations for this video!!! It is a great contribution to the community and fans and enthusiasts. Thank you very much James !!!
Much appreciated :) hello back from the UK
Brilliant video again James, thanks man. Love that guitar as well. ❤
Really interesting video , thoroughly enjoyed it . I am starting to guitar so found it very helpful . Thamk you
Great video, James. I loved hearing these rhythms stripped back. Side note, they actually did perform cloudburst live! One of them was at the Water Rats club in London!
Shocked whatever didn’t get a mention, and the master plan for that matter. Then again this is a topic I could watch for hours!
I'm going to order the Xvive as a guitarist and show support to James and the work he puts in on this channel and I recommend everyone else do as well.
Noel's rhythm playing is very underappreciated. He's a very good rhythm player.
In my inexpert opinion, he’s pretty darned good at songwriting and arranging, all the parts.
He himself says he’s never been a virtuoso player of anything, especially lead guitar, but he can play competently on all the instruments including drums.
He’s among the best melody writers imo and, in many but by no means all songs, he can be a cracking, if somewhat cryptic, lyricist.
I didn’t rate him as a lead singer until I started getting into NGHFBs a handful of years ago.
Like many, I was unaware of how good he is live, until I stumbled on an acoustic set, accompanied by a drummer on a limited drum kit & Gem Archer on lead & piano. I didn’t note the venue but recall it was London, while Oasis was still stumbling along in its near final state.
Noel was excellent & held the audience spellbound for an hour or so. I put it on often.
Yes ,listen to the start of go let it out , he played the same chord A chord on tender with Damon Alban very drunk
@@GT380manI agree. He is a very good songwriter.
As regards the fact he's not a shredder on guitar. So what? Shredding would sound awful over Oasis music.
In my humble opinion his lead guitar work suits the songs, and what more do you need?
I mean I admire the discipline and skill of shredders but it's not really music. It's like photo-realistic art. Technically brilliant but it doesn't say anything or make you feel anything.
Mike Rowe, ex Oasis keyboard player, said the same in a recent interview
Great video, James and interesting choices. I always liked the Air studio version of It's Getting Better Man more than the album one myself. Angel Child has some tricky chords in there, really like how uncoventional they sound.
Love from South-America, brother. Chile.
Same to you from the UK 🍻
That Lowden sounds beautiful.
It has a balanced sound perfect for clarity.
Best guitar I've ever owned, hands down
It's Getting Better Man is in A Mixolydian, there are no non diatonic chords in the verse, pre-chorus or chorus. Well, possibly the B7 but I'm sure the Be Here Now TAB book had that as a Bm or B5. The D "riff" at the end of the chorus briefly takes us to the parent (D major) key but uses the minor equivalent of D minor (actually Dorian) instead. The D5, C, G/B progression is very typical of Dorian/Mixolydian songs, D Blues scale over the top for the solo and you have instant classic rock.
That’s interesting. Most who aren’t formally trained won’t know what the descriptor such as Mixolydian is.
As a very poor & untrained strummer on an acoustic, how easy is it for someone to write in unusual keys like that?
Put another way, do you need some formal training or at least
familiarity with how to play in these non standard keys, in order to wrote in them?
Noel keeps insisting he didn’t learn music theory, he’s either the monkey with the typewriter knocking out Shakespeare or a gaint fibber!
@@GT380man Mixolydian is the sound of classic rock. And Noel uses it alot in early Oasis songs, possibly unintentionally as his theory understanding is something he dismisses at every opportunity. It's a tricky one to distinguish at first because it's a mode with a major tonality.
7 Chords in Major Key - Major, Minor, Minor, Major, Major, Minor, Diminished.
7 Chords in Mixolydian - Major, Minor, Diminished, Major, Minor, Minor, Major.
From the Be Here Now album, listen to the difference in mood between these tracks; Stand By Me, All Around The World (verse in particular), Don't Go Away chorus (all Major Key) and Fade In Out, Be Here Now (again, verse in particular) and It's Getting Better Man (all Mixolydian). They all sound "major" but the Mixolydian ones will have less of a cheesy/nursery rhyme tinge and more of a rock feel.
Over and above this, when Noel uses the Major Key he'll often sprinkle in some non diatonic chords as James alluded to in the video. In Stand By Me, the B7 in the verse is outside of the key, as is the A chord in the pre-chorus and F chord in the 3/4 bars in the chorus. Equally, the C# major chord in the All Around The World Chorus is outside of the key. The Fm in the Don't Go Away bridge section, same thing. Loads of examples, pretty much every song in fairness. Very Beatles-esque.
I don't have a music theory course to sell, I'm just an Oasis fan with a decent understanding of music theory and this is how I see it. Happy to be proved wrong.
Aye mate, sounds about right. Just because the song starts with an A chord doesn't always mean it's in the key of A major.
As much as I love lead guitar, Ive always gravitated to rhythm guitar. Tgese are some great examples.
I can tell there's a number of guitar overdubs on Morning Glory. Great video...❤
James, i have recently found out that the drummer of oasis, Alan White had joined a band before oasis called Starclub, i have tried researching clips of the band playing live or just in general, but i cant seem too find any. I would love it if you made a video about this interesting topic thank you. Amazing video by the way cloudburst and angel child is an absolutely great choice for this video.
Cloudburst is my favourite Oasis song! It's a shame they didn't do it live
It's a great tune. One of my favourites from that era
Very stone rosesy
@@JamesHargreavesGuitar Since we're talking about Cloudburst, are you willing to make a video showing all lead guitar parts for the song? (like what you did with live forever and some other songs)
That version of it’s getting better man at the knebworth soundcheck is deffo worth a listen, version that got me into the song
The chord sequence in Lyla is amazing - there are so many different versions of it tab sites and UA-cam, that even after 19 years I still don’t know what the correct chords are 😂
James I noticed you were playing a tele deluxe in your band clip. I’ve been thinking of getting one, do you like it?
I love it. Its a beast, chunkier and beefier than the Les Paul I used to use
Cool product
I think the Knebworth version of Its Getting Better Man!!! Is the best despite the NG solo being fluffed.
I was there on 11.08.1996..!
There is a video of Noel playing Angel Child with High Flying Birds from 2012 Xfm legends. Pretty good version.
Surprised you didn't set up a gig in Glasgow's King Tuts Wah Wah Hut when you're touring with your band, James. A lot of historical significance that would be right up your alley there.
Also, what kind of pickups do you have in your acoustic, that the receiver plugged into (from the Xvive U2)?
I definitely want to hit King Tuts, its on the list for the future!
The pickup is an LR Baggs Anthem (the one made specifically for Lowdens)
@@JamesHargreavesGuitar It's a great venue and, of course, playing on the stage would be like standing on the shoulders of giants (lol).
Is it a piezo pickup or did you have to install/drill/route anything? I'm trying to convince my mate that he should put a pickup in his acoustic and introduce him to the world of effects (probably by getting a Boss Katana, since it has an acoustic pickup setting) but he's really reluctant to do anything that might damage it. I'm an electric player and don't know that much about acoustics.
It's actually blended - there's a mic and a pickup under the saddle. I didn't fit it however, I took it to Rock Box in Northallerton, and they sorted it out for me (surgery on a Lowden is more than I can cope with ha)
You can get really decent soundhole pickups that require no cutting and can be just gently fitted into the guitar
@@JamesHargreavesGuitar Cheers James. I'll have a look into the soundhole pickups and see what's in the top ten rated list.
I'm the same - I'll do minor alterations like when I went from my prewired solderless pickguard (EMG DG-20) back to my original set up, I had to solder the old output jack back in, but had never soldered in my life before. I was willing to attempt that but definitely not going to try installing something like the Freeway switch on my own.
GuitarGuitar has an amazing luthier who's, I think, one of the only - if not the only - Fender-licensed luthiers (luthier or technician, as I'm not sure the correct term) in the UK. If you want something installed on a Fender, that shop is the only one I would send my Strat or Tele to.
I already had a push-pull Gilmour switch but when I got the Freeway (10 way) switch, I asked if there was anything that the already existing push-pull could be used for, and he came up with a really clever solution.
Thanks very much for the replies mate. I've been a sub from very early on and love the channel. Oasis were a huge part of my growing up, like they were for every working class kid (especially) all over the UK in the 90s to mid-2000s.
Take care mate.
James where can I access the master tracks for the tunes?
Did you take down the video abt the rock and roll hall of fame...can't find it anywhere?
You are very charitable with all the “they’s”! Especially with Angel Child. Tell me that’s not 100% Noel ?
Didn't Noel play that Morning Glory parts at Letterman when they play as a four piece?
Angel Child. 🧒 instantly transports me to that morning at the end of June 97. Mark and Lard breakfast show on Radio 1, playing DYKWIM, Stay Young, Angel Child and Heroes in full. GCSEs done and what felt like an endless summer stretching out ahead of me. An incredible time in my life.
Exact same feeling… the endless summer of 97 was all about oasis for me. In retrospect I liked the DYKWIM single better than BHN. I’m 42 next month by the way. The endless summer ended a long time ago😅
@@JelleKramerSongs haha! I’m 43 in August. Be Here Now came out the same day as I got my GCSEs. A mixed bag of a day that was 😂
Yep. 100% the same. Oasis !!! Love from North Wales
While it is technically true that the dominant 7th chord and its relative minor aren't diatonic, i think it's giving Noel a bit too much credit for using blues changes in a rock song in the 90s!
can u make a guitar lesson to the seahorses "blinded by the sun" or " i want you to know" these songs contain fantastic riffing but there are no lesson out there
Cloudburst is on the Japanese version of Definitely Maybe
I was playing (its getting better ) man on my epiphone lastbank hol Sunday ,its underrated
I’ve played open mics where they use these and they do indeed work very well. In this video it sounds about as good as an under saddle pick-up will sound - but a soundhole pick-up would sound so much nicer!
Well, this guitar seems to have a piezo. So it sounds like shi, I mean PIEZO!
@@LegsON Haha glad at least someone is on the same page!
@@thomasdennison1623 I tried several soundhole and piezo/+mic pickups.
Fishman Mic blend is the best, it's just fantastic.
LR Baggs M1A is the worst.
Ha, I’m actually a big fan of the Baggs M1A! That said they’re so pricey these days for what they are.
I’ve been impressed by mic pickup systems when I’ve tried them, but always a nervous about getting feedback on stage.
@@thomasdennison1623 My experience with M1 was horrendous.
Its feedback is insane, and it picks up me TOUCHING THE HEADSTOCK.
This is TERRIBLE, even mics don't do that.
that was good mate, had me jammin with you.
im loving playing oasis songs but i sound ok playing a long but if i try to record my own its no where close why would that be ? im a noob in regards to looping and recording Music Thanks
Likely mic placement / mic type / mic quality / no reverb / EQ
@@DarthQueefious thnks ill experiment with things a little more
@@REALLYRANDOMREVIEW5 James has a video (Rockfield Studios) where Owen talks about how some of the guitars were recorded. Obviously you don't need the same equipment, but the vid should help.
I have some good mics, like the akgc414eb, but the Oktava mk012 (new black version) is all that's really needed. I got mine off ebay, it came with multiple capsules, 2 of which I sold to make a chunk of the money back. Just have to make sure they are real. YT has videos on how to check. I generally place the mic pointing at an angle towards me and the 12th fret, then alter the distance to taste.
When it comes to EQ I found a really weird and cool way to EQ an acoustic is to take the sound of a flushing toilet and an EQ plugin like Fabfilter and EQmatch the toilet sound and take that EQ curve and invert it on the acoustic track, it only needs to be subtle. I found this out as I tend to play guitar on the toilet and found that after flushing you get a really nice acoustic sound. Maybe I just have a special toilet tho...
Should've also pointed out the interface matters. Focusrite scarletts are decent.
Great video. I wish I could actually play guitar
My awful playing makes Liam’s guitar playing look like Hendrix, Gilmour, Squire, Page and Marr combined!
Wish I could tune a guitar and string it too. Ah well, at least i have fun smashing away on the same one string. ‘Out of tune, out of time and out of my mind!’
I understand the need for advertising to support your channel, but I found the constant reappearance of the product to be intrusive and breaking the flow of an otherwise enjoyable video. Would you consider a 1-minute advertising segment instead, which could easily be skipped by those to whom the product does not apply? Thanks! 😊❤
Fair feedback - I rarely do promos, just once in a blue moon, but that's worth thinking about when the next one rolls around 👍
He will be telling whats the best cornflakes to buy next!

What guitar is that ?
It's a Lowden O23c
@@JamesHargreavesGuitarit looks very similar to that Mavers Takamine (I know it isn’t that but looks very similar)

Gee weez. Enough already with those x vive
Oh no, James is selling out 🤦♂️
Nice lowden . I used to like them until ned shearer got one 🤣
Ah I discovered them through Jon Gomm, who I reckon is the best acoustic guitarist out there right now
Its the best guitar I've ever owned
What's your take on noel and clint boon dating back in the day ?
Imagine if Oasis reformed with Squire?
Half of this video is a commercial
At least it's relevant to guitars. He has to cover his costs. This channel doesn't make itself. I don't mind a few product endorsements if it relates to guitars. If he was advertising car insurance then I might get irritated though!
Welcome to the internet.
Good luck to him.
It's still a great video.
Try to make ends meat, you're a slave to money then you die
@@pjl8119
I’m with you on that. Good adverts and suitable to what he’s talking about. It works!
I mean, as you say, it’s hardly like;
‘and before I strum Going Nowhere, here’s a good time to talk about car insurance. Because if you don’t have car insurance you too will be going nowhere!’
‘And now, before I play the guitar parts to One Way Road, here’s a mention of car insurance, which you’d need if you’re driving on a one way road, or not’
‘And before I rip in to the riff from Champagne Supernova, here’s a word about car insurance especially if you still drive a Vauxhall Nova!’
Haha can you imagine!
This video is just one big advertisement.
And youre a negative person
It's Getting Better (Man!!) should have been a good song. But it just isn't. You can't hear it with all the distortion. It sounds like someone shaking a packet of crisps with Noel's lazy, first draft, cheesey lyrics on top of it. And the chorus repeated 12x.
There's a difference between AC/DC & Oasis AC/DC had guitarists who could actually play their guitars......
Listen to live forever solo and tell us Noel can't play guitar.
@@englishkiwi3051 I've heard it
