I've been preparing for my baby cockatiel for months now and unfortunately it died out of nowhere, this video made me feel a little bit better. I'm going to be getting a different cockatiel on Saturday because of what happened. Thank you for sharing your birds with the world, I'm so grateful you started making videos again.
Yes, you always give a treat AFTER the behavior is done :) First you'll just watch your bird's head movements. If she looks to her right you'll click and give her a treat. Eventually she'll realize that looking to her right earns her a treat and she'll do it more often. Start rewarding only when she turns her head further. Eventually she'll start trying a quarter turn. Click and treat after each quarter turn. Then eventually shell experiment with doing a half turn, 3/4 turn, etc. and before you know it she'll be doing full turns. If your bird isn't offering the behavior you're looking for (looking to her right or partial turns) and is already target trained, you can use a target stick to help her figure out what to do. In target training you would give a click and treat for touching the end of the target stick with her beak. In this case you'd want to ignore whether she's touching the target stick and click and treat for making progress toward turning a circle. Hope that helps 💖
Watch your bird's behavior 😊 She'll randomly look to the right or start a turn. Click and give her a treat for that. Eventually she'll put two and two together that that earns a treat and will do it more often and more exaggerated. Before you know it she'll be turning a full circle.
She's eating spray millet as her training treat 💖 I have a link to some in the video description 😊 I also have a video called "What My Cockatiel Eats" that covers what their daily diets are like if that helps!
