I have a new foster baby at my house, Gunner, and he is absolutely the sweetest boy (Mastiff/Lab mix, we think) and before he heads to his forever home, I'd love to be able to walk him! He still needs to gain weight but he's currently 91 lbs. Where do I start? What equipment might work best for him considering his size? I would love nothing more than to be able to take him on a few mile walk everyday but I'm exhausted after 2 blocks.
I volunteer at a rescue and your videos have helped save more dogs than you could ever know. I use your techniques and have shown other volunteers them and the difference in the dogs has been incredible. I've seen dogs that no one would even look at go into the most wonderful homes and it is all because of the knowledge you share. I've even added a twist from our personal trainer for our own dogs with a slip lead fashioned into a gentle leader style for the more stubborn dogs. Please don't ever stop doing what you do.
So many times people at the park have asked me how do I manage to walk my two dogs almost like if it is something out of this world... And when I tell them its up to structure and control they absolutely freak out telling me im abusing my dogs then. Meanwhile their dog is acting out crazy pulling, barking and all the "normal non-abusive stuff"... Thank you so much for all the quality content you post!
i had a similar situation you mention, i was at the vet with my 2 lab/rottie mixes, 1 is 13 months the other is 7 years, so we are in front of the vet and my dogs are in a break off leash, so this woman comes with a car and by the reaction of my older dog, i figured she had a dog in the car, so i put mine in the trunk of my car and i keep it open while i tell her that i have to do this in case her dog is little and my older dog is quick to go into prey drive. So lo and behold, she pulls this little doberman pincher out of the crate and i shit you not, the woman was about 180 cm, 65 kg wearing boots and this 1kg dog was pulling her over the parking lot towards the grass as he had to pee. He does his business they come back my way and i just step back and lift my hand and she saw how both dogs went in sit and were hyperfocused on my hand, so she says "oh how i wish mine was like that" and i respod with "order accountability discipline" and she was like " yeah we dont have any of those" goes to the vet, im still waiting my turn and i was getting antsy as i heard them talking and i went in and then i hear the vet say "not all discipline necessary means hitting the dog, there are many ways of discipline, he has been coming here a long time, i know him well and i can guarantee you he treats his dogs better than you treat yours" so at that point i walk in and im like "yo vet, give the lady a break, thats how all uneducated people think" and that hit home with the lady, she was a fancy lady i forgot to mention, Mercedes Benz, shoes worth more than me my car my both dogs combined, and she was going full Karen on me to the vet but in the end she came to see things my way and the vet told me that she came back to thank the vet for her words as they moved the lady to get herself and the dog into a program which was really working for them and i was happy, even tho she was trying to dunk on me and i get it, i look the way i look, always dirty and holes in clothes (immaggine dressing nicely with 2 lab/rotties) long hair beard so yeah i get how she would think the worst right away when someone like me mentions order accountability and discipline, in her shoes-not knowing better- i would probably think the same, thank my dogs i know better :D
It still astonishes me that people are more willing to say something is impossible than admit their are other ways to train a dog than 'positive only'. Great to see two dogs together. That synchronized sit near the end was beautiful! Your videos are always so helpful and informative:)
Most people believe if something has worked once it will work every time. I believe positive only training can work if you're starting with a puppy that doesn't have any issues. A dog with well established behaviour issues especially of the reactive dominant defiance or aggressive kind you're going to need some form of Correction. At least that is my experience. I currently have this German Shepherd rescue dog with a history of biting thinking I could win her over with love and rewards... 10 bites later, I'm willing to crack down on the bad behavior! Now that she's muzzle trained and I know what she knows the shenanigans are done.
It's like parenting experts or you know....doctors... they don't know what they don't know and often don't have the humility or curiosity to find a better way
Lena, even all positive trainers set limits for their pups and use withholding of reinforcement to get the dog to choose the right thing. That said, it takes longer to train without corrections. You must teach the dog what you want them to do first, and for a dog like these, you have to interrupt the bad behavior before you can teach them anything.
I like this owner, she diagnosed herself, had clear goals outlined. Great job, Tom, you gave her the information and skills to be successful. Happy owner, and happy more balanced dog! Win win!
I specifically love this episode, as I really relate to the client in this case, in both age and her style of learning. It's great to see such a wide variety of cases and clients on here. Such a difference in a short span of time!
I really appreciate the tip to keep your voice tone low and matter of fact as opposed to a happy, excited “break” command. I’m very guilty of this and will correct myself. I really get why this is a problem with my dogs. Thank you, Tom!
Leash tug in comparison to a fish bite, brilliant. Teaching her proper TONE OF VOICE is something many never think of. This video is certainly a testament to your knowledge and ability to teach.
Unfortunately there's still many people that have to learn the "hard way" that positive only doesn't work and it's better to have a balanced approach. Great job as always Tom!
I’ve used a positive only trainer for a one hour session and I felt like it was such a waste of time and money. The next trainer I used was a balanced trainer and the difference was huge in just 5 minutes and his advice from just a phone call made my relationship with my GSD puppy stronger. This channel has also been a great resource in training and understanding my dog.
I relate to her soooo much. Walking my dog gives me anxiety and it seems like people think I’ve never trained my dog. However, we’ve gone through 7 trainers, all of which haven’t been a good fit for my French Bulldog. But watching these videos have helped me 10x more than any positive only training that we’ve been through. Thank you! 💕
my dog knows how to walk on a leash properly and for the most part is good, but in general seeing people makes me anxious and I instantly start imagining things going wrong, even tho they usually don't, and it makes things really hard to focus on what I need to do when I myself don't know what to do cause my brain shuts off
I don’t have a dog yet but I’m trying to catch and learn as much as I can from these videos. Thanks for all the work you’re doing to help me in the future and these people!
It's amazing the difference it makes when there is no ego and you have a genuine interest on learning to better yourself and respect what's being taught. It's obvious how much she loves her dogs. I was so happy for her success.
A friend of mine suggested this channel for me to help my husky not pull on a leash as much. As much as I thought I was “training” my dog, I’ve now realized how much of the basics I failed to teach. Thank UCA for your consistent content and relatable lessons!
That is exactly what that owner needed. It is amazing how balanced training can fit any problem and correct any behaviour. Youre incredible! Thank you so much
Great video. The owner was so defeated at the beginning with what her previous trainers had said. To see her walking BOTH dogs with confidence and ease was very rewarding. Must admit i did think i hope her previous trainers see this video, and it might open their horizons to other techniques, cos let's face it different dogs with different owners will always need different types of training. There's never a one size fits all approach.
Really refreshing to be able to watch someone also struggle with handling both dogs at once. On the verge of rehoming one. To see it being possible with the correct training is definitely relieving.
Dang, yet another case of positive-only trainers messing up (rather than admitting they are out of their depth); this happens so often and I shudder to think how many dogs this has gotten euthanised already.
I don't understand how a positive only dog trainer can take money from the client and give NO results. The positive only trainers are like snake oil salesman. The owner learnt more in one session with Tom than all the positive only trainers. Great job Tom
They wouldnt be so bad if they were honest with their limitations. Can you help me with obedience training? - "Yeah sure". Can you help me with my reactive dog? - "No sorry I'm not equipped for that, try one of these balanced trainers.." Instead people get told there is no solution where there clearly is.
Love this video and training session. Tom's techniques are phenomenal. I love the fact that he doesn't demean the owners lack of knowledge about their own dog but instead encourages them and the viewer on best approaches to the situations.
I seriously don't know what further proof people need, so they can realize that positive only isn't realistic.? Subscribed, notified, liked and commenting. 😁
Positive reinforcement is a good technique if used properly. I was once told by a trainer that you must be like a slot machine. Sometimes you pay out a little, some times not at all but every now and then JACKPOT 🎰. The prizes need to be mixed, food (kibble, dried treats or boiled chicken), Good boys/girls and a pet and sometimes nothing at all. But it can’t be only positive. As Epicurus said. Everything in moderation. ❤️ your videos!
This was a really helpful video when it comes to over-paying for obedience. I like how you walked the client through how to build a better relationship with her dogs. Great content!
How could a trainer tell a client something is impossible? And still take their money for the session?? Nothing's impossible, the trainer is either unknowledgeable, lazy, or both!
Love this, as an owner of 2 mastiff/rottie mixes and a 5 month old Great Dane/mastiff I am trying to figure out how to walk all three together. What slip lead do you recommend? I bought one but feel it might be to thick.
I'm in the UK and would love to find somebody like Tom who can show me how to manage my stranger reactive dog I've done training and been to a Behaviourist who is positive reinforcement only but doesn't show me what to do just given me training tips, I'm so frustrated
A friend tried to tell me that all physical corrections are bad. Thanks to you, and a couple of others such as Fenrir and Michael Ellis, I know that corrections can be done correctly - without cowing the dog or actually hurting them.
I love how u gave her the hope and belief that she can have a better life with her dogs and not have to worry about walks and daily life tasks. I could use that dogtra 280C because I was looking at getting one for the long term but I don't have the money rn for it and I'm working hard to train my dog I'm doing service dog trainer with her but I need help with her dog reactivity she is doing great I just need that last step with the collar. i love watching your videos and it has helped me soooooooo much with training my dog shes a 16-month-old Doberman. 🥰
Another shining example of how useless positive reinforcement only trainers are with dogs that have any behavioral issues. Anyone who has ever raised a child only using positive reinforcement let me know how that worked out for you. In that respect dogs are no different.
I had a very frustrating experience with my first dog trainer who wanted me to use a harness and treats for everything and be positive no prong collar no ecollar because they were cruel according to her Plus when my dog wasn't doing there right thing she wanted me to stand on her leash to correct her and my dog weighs around 80 lbs, she would just knock me over it was a terrible way to train a dog.
These videos are super helpful, are their videos on interaction with other dogs and styles of play and when to intervene if it’s turning into not play behavior.
Love watching you work with owners, Tom. You are generous with encouragement and great solutions to their problems. You’re helping dogs with people problems. ☺️ Thanks for sharing with the rest of us. ❤️
I really feel for this owner! I know how much it sucks to feel that no matter how much work you put in no one would notice. There are those days sometimes, even with some of my most trained dogs.
Training two dogs always seemed impossible for me, especially when I had a dangerously aggressive and reactive one that started to rub off on the other. Really love these videos because it’s seriously helped me get my dogs under control to when I can walk them and be safely and completely in control of the two of them. Couldn’t have done it without y’all 🙏🏻
Always love hearing the intricate behavioural details of the dogs. Love that clarification of the proper use of positive reinforcement, so true! This video made me so happy! I know how it feels to work and train so hard, but feel like you are getting nowhere! Tom has such an amazing way of communicating with the dogs and the owners! Love it all!! 😀
These videos have been so helpful learning how to use balanced training tools. I am glad I’ve found this channel early on for our puppy, as we continue to building a positive relationship. I recommend this channel to everyone and I share this with the dog community on other social media platforms. Thank you so much for all your hard work!
I used these tips today and it made a big difference in my walk today, I have a 5 month old puppy that's been fear aggressive since the gecko and with your channel it's really helping me
@@infinitusfinitus when I got him, he was super friendly towards me, flash forward to puppy classes a week later, he was trying to bite the dogs and the owners, now he reacts to anyone and every dog
I just wanted to hug this owner. So relatable. I have invested crazy amounts of money and even more ridiculous amounts of time into training our youngest dog and you wouldn't even know it sometimes. We took her all the way to Brian Agnew in Utah and he was a HUGE help. Just wish he was local so we ccould work with him on a regular basis to fine tune things. Thanks for giving this gal hope!
Such a positive channel with ton of information for dog owners. Do you offer online puppy training zoom sessions? As I want to ensure I’m building a good foundation for my Dutch shepherd pup.
Seeing that she had a thicker slip lead and switching to a smaller diameter made such a huge difference! I have a similar slip lead as her original one. So I’ll definitely switch because a pop feels like a tug and pull to me! Thanks!
Another fabulous training session from Tom, thank you for showing us all these tips, tricks and ways. Two beautiful dogs and a very caring owner, lovely to watch.
As a horse person, the concept of having slack in order to give corrections is very important. Horses are a lot stronger than humans a therefore is necessary to use fast corrections, just like dogs. The handler just has to have leverage with the leash. :)
I have the same with my GSD once I say “YES” if she has done something good she automatically takes that as oh I can go now and switches off. I will change my tone of voice and hopefully that is where I’m going wrong. Great video as always thanks Tom x
Watched half last night had a tear when the young woman got her dogs into shape I love a happy ending for owners and dogs who just love each other well done have a great New Year
This video was so great to watch and learn about the different styles of what dog training can be. I’m happy the owner didn’t give up on get proper training for her dogs. Definitely looking forward to learn more for you!

I used these tips today and it made a big difference in my walk today, I have a 5 month old puppy that's been fear aggressive since the gecko and with your channel it's really helping me
Fear aggressive since the gecko? I'm so curious! What happened?
@@infinitusfinitus when I got him, he was super friendly towards me, flash forward to puppy classes a week later, he was trying to bite the dogs and the owners, now he reacts to anyone and every dog
Love watching your videos, the really are great!
Love your training. Helping me at dog shelter
Love every video! I’m from Wells up in the Adirondack and it’s crazy how my favorite dog channel is from so close away! Keep it up man!
Thanks for watching, Ben!!
Glad I found you, I have a fearful biting dog and have learned a lot from you
So amazing to see such fast improvement!
Love training with your facility!!
Oh no, I missed it… hope to get one of those for my lab 🐶❤️
I just wanted to hug this owner. So relatable. I have invested crazy amounts of money and even more ridiculous amounts of time into training our youngest dog and you wouldn't even know it sometimes. We took her all the way to Brian Agnew in Utah and he was a HUGE help. Just wish he was local so we ccould work with him on a regular basis to fine tune things. Thanks for giving this gal hope!
I am so happy for this dog owner! Great episode! 🙂
What a fantastic video. I am so happy to see how empowered the owner is after working with you!
Such a positive channel with ton of information for dog owners. Do you offer online puppy training zoom sessions? As I want to ensure I’m building a good foundation for my Dutch shepherd pup.
THANKS! I DO
Thank you so much for these videos!
Amazing how dogs can learn so fast.
Seeing that she had a thicker slip lead and switching to a smaller diameter made such a huge difference! I have a similar slip lead as her original one. So I’ll definitely switch because a pop feels like a tug and pull to me! Thanks!
Tom you are the man, Great video as always !
Loved how patient you always are Tom! It is a joy watching you work with this lady and her dogs.
Still the best trainer on youtube! :)
Another fabulous training session from Tom, thank you for showing us all these tips, tricks and ways. Two beautiful dogs and a very caring owner, lovely to watch.
What a wonderful difference you are making in the lives of these dogs and their owners.
As a horse person, the concept of having slack in order to give corrections is very important. Horses are a lot stronger than humans a therefore is necessary to use fast corrections, just like dogs. The handler just has to have leverage with the leash. :)
love it
Love your videos, so helpful.
you have been my personal dog trainer since day 1 you just dont know it lmao, keep up the good content man your helping alot of people !
I have the same with my GSD once I say “YES” if she has done something good she automatically takes that as oh I can go now and switches off. I will change my tone of voice and hopefully that is where I’m going wrong. Great video as always thanks Tom x
