  • As the “Queen of Tejano Music,” Selena Quintanilla-Perez was Latin icon, breaking down gender barriers in a traditionally male-dominated genre while using her voice and distinct sense of style to influence and inspire millions. Prior to her tragic death, the young artist took home the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of The Year a total of nine times. Her albums are some of the best selling Latin albums in the United States.
When her former fan club president and friend, Yolanda Saldívar, killed her in March 1995, it sent shockwaves through both the Latin community and the world of music. Here are the tragic details about Selena’s murder.

I did not only like her music but the way she carried herself. She never forgot who she was unlike the singers out there now. I never saw her in super skimpy clothing, she did not need to use profanity in her songs, songs were clean of sexual things, she was just humble, too humble. Her humbleness was taken advantage of and that is super common in the world today. Never lost her roots and where she came from. She had money and fame but did not let it get to her head. This is why I enjoyed her music and loved her as an artist. ❤

I was 9 years old about to turn 10 when the queen passed. I had only been a fan for three years, when I heard the news, I went home to hide in the closet with my Walkman. I hit rewind on my radio recorded selena jams, pressed play and mourned to the queen

She falls into the same category as the other great and young artists we lost in the 90's. Selena, 2Pac, Kurt Cobain, River Phoenix, Notorious B.I.G., Bradley Nowell, and Jeff Buckley. They were so extraordinary in their talents and it just is mind blowing that it happened so consistently in the 90's. Or maybe because I was a teen back then it's more prevalent in my mind. I know there's more lost but those all come to mind right now. R.I.P. beloved ones.

To be perfectly honest, if Yolanda didn’t exist then Selena would’ve still been here. We wouldn’t be spitting the word “murder” out of our mouths. But unfortunately...Yolanda jus had to slither her way in. I don’t hate her. I jus don’t like her. The word hate is way to strong for me to use. So I decided to use “Like.” The only reason as to why I don’t like her is because of her actions such as taking Selena’s life away. It shouldn’t have happened. Period.

Selena is one of my biggest heroes and inspirations, having motivated and inspired me to pursue my dreams and goals.
I served in the US Army for 3 years (2009-2012). Needless to say, there were several people who didn't want me to join because they would worry and didn't want anything to happen, blah blah blah. But then again, you don't have to be in the military for something bad to happen. We know what happened to Selena, and she wasn't in the military. 😠
