Exploring the Hooniverse Mountune Focus ST

- Our man Jason Connor typically handles driving duty when it comes to the camera car. What do we use for said vehicle? Why Jason's own Mountune-modified Focus ST.
It's a car that actually deserves its own video... so that's what's happening here. In fact, we're going to let Jason tell us all about it.
Mr. Connor took a stab at shooting and editing this whole this as well. It's his first go at it, and we think he did a pretty damn good job for his first go 'round.

Nice little review of the Focus ST. The modifications are perfect for a daily driver.
Thanks a lot, it really has been the best balance for me and I've put just over 30k on it so its easy to rack up the miles
I love the rims
A nice little mod my buddy did was replacing the heavy 25 pound each, 18" wheels, and replaced them with 18 pound each, TSW Nurburgring 18x8 wheels and added 245/40/18 Nitto performance tires all around. It doesn't sound like much on paper, but for those who don't know... Shaving 28 pounds off the wheels makes a big difference in acceleration, handling, braking, and even gas mileage. You can actually feel the difference believe it or not. It feels like the difference in performance of your car in the winter versus the summer... -Very noticeable. He's ready to do other mods now. He's planning on mostly COBB performance parts. Anyway, thanks for the video.
The editing was fine, but the narration could use some more life! Not bad for a first shot.
5 minutes of paper information then 3 seconds of how the car drives.
+taylor wagneers Wait until I review it again in another situation with additional mods. New videos have been released in which I've gained further on camera experience.
Haha great job Jason, my favorite part? 7m30s where you are being absolutely yourself :)
My roommate has one of these. He has added an exhaust to it (a crappy one that I cannot remember). I showed him your video for ideas for his next upgrades. Great video! Looking forward to seeing more from you!
+rj12345rj I'm planning a new video since I've done more mods to the car, it should be a fun shoot day.
What a difference description box makes
Great review. I heard about this on review on your podcast with Driving While Awesome. Thumbs up
I went with the Ford Racing Tune FFRP and kept my Warranty also. It too requires installation at the dealer and one step colder plugs installed. It doesn't increase the HP power curve but brings it in earlier along with the torque. The Ford Racing Tune creates more torque at 360 vs 310 and sooner than the Mountune. Best not to gas it too hard in a turn. Thing I dislike about the FFRP is you cannot data log with that tune.
Just wanted to share that there are other Warranty Tune options.
love it, now we need to see mountune fiesta
I thought this was a great video, very informative and well edited, in my opinion. Awesome for your first video man
I wonder if focus's brake vectoring system prompted the need for the pad and fluid upgrade. I heard things.
The torque vectoring does have some effects on that even if sport mode is activated. It's ok for now but if I'm going to hit with serious track time again I'm going to make some kydex air guides to channel air into the calipers.
7.12-7.20 minutes I think the car sounds great :) lovely tone to it :)
Great video. I was thinking of doing the same when I move out to Cali in May. How much did the dealer charge for installation of the MP275 package and how long did they have your car in the shop for?
Hey Jason, awesome time out bro, and I know that car is a beast. Question is, when are you trading it in for the Focus RS?
Nathan Stephenson I'm not as potentially awesome that the RS will be. Financially it doesn't make sense and I'm content with the ST as is or perhaps with a slight bit more tuning once the warranty is out.
Indeed. Tune away!!
Jason just a quick question - no mention of the PCV upgrade? Direct Injection I here can create a negative issue over time. Your take?
Great video I enjoyed watching. I've just bought a new 2016 st3 and thinking about adding these updates barring the suspension.
A question for you - did you notice any sound difference by adding the mountune catback exhaust to the stock exhaust?
+Neil Bird Congrats! There is a more aggressive sound with the exhaust compared to stock. Granted, some have more drone than others, but my flow master had little to no drone.
Did the dealer have to install the tune/exhaust/etc to maintain the warranty?
FastRedPonyCar
Yes, only Mountune HQ or Mountune Pro dealerships can install Mountune Performance packages with factory warranty intact.
Unleashed tuning 93 octane tune- 250-255 whp, 340-350 lb/ft wtq. It's a ton of fun. He's wrong when he says that most ST's make 210-215 hp at the wheels, stock. Most make 225-230 whp. His car is not unusual.
Your clutch, and other engine internals will not last long with over 320 tq. 330-345 crank hp is a good safe range. 282 fwhp is around 320 crank. Turbo cars tend to make more hp at the wheels, hence, less drivetrain loss. Typical loss on turbo cars is around 12% vs standard drive train loss of 15% and supercharged cats have 18-19% losses.
+Michael Harris my st has almost 40k miles on 390 ft lbs of tq on a custom tune from unleashed stage 3+ and it was nowhere near babied
Michael Harris my ST is tuned at 267whp and 394wtq.... a few friends of mine are running well in the 400's safely on the stock Clutch and internals still... Edge Autosport in Denver is my tuner
Hey I like your video it helped me make some tough decisions. I wanted to ask a question I went to the Moutune website and looked up various items I noticed that various pictures that had the same wheels that's on your ride... Now Moutune has various wheel choices on the website for the ST the wheels in the pictures and what seems to be in your car was not offered. How did you get or find those wheels ? Tire Rack as a set of O.Z FORMULA HLT 18|x8 21lbs that look identical but without the Moutune centercap. Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
-Mark
How are you only getting 310 torque? Most people who are getting 280WHP, they are also getting 380 ft lb. of torque.
Depends on the dyno they all read different . Mine at sea level and lower temps kicks ass . Drive down here and see what I mean
How much boost are you pushing, I'm hitting 23psi on a good day I just want to make sure I'm not overboosting and hurting the engine.
I put in my order for the MP275 kit for my ST3. Does the AP come with Cobb traction control or is it totally different since it comes from mountune. ??
I love the ST
Nice video, but your first line about performance for the dollar is pretty much killed by going to Mountune for all your parts. They have a huge markup for just their name and logo. You could easily go to stage 3 using many other aftermarket companies, achieving the same performance for 1/2 to 2/3 the price. Even their Cobb tuner is crazy expensive when all they add is their branding on it.
But I followed that up later on with my main purpose of going with Mountune, to keep my warranty. Yes you pay a premium but I'm not going only for power with them and I wanted a full performance package. Cheap parts eventually means things will break. Seeing the engineering and quality with each and every part I have installed ensured I made the right decision. Ford Racing bought off on this and partnered with Mountune so that says enough to me.
Jason Connor
I don’t see any oil or cuts on your hands . What kind of budget are you doing with out your own wrenching . Get some tools !
what tune did you use on the programer i want to use 93 octain but is there a stage 1 or 2 map that you would use with the new intercooler and intake. im picking up a focus st next week and my ford dealer is doing the install i just want to make sure they know the right map to install.
+schembrilllllll I had the Mountune mTune but I've gone with the AccessPort option with Randy's custom tune.
At the end with the GT3, what gloves are you wearing?
Thoughts on the club sport suspension? I'm thinking for DD it's the way to go.
+Joseph Ruggero It's absolutely perfect, it's the ideal blend of performance and daily livability.
Solid review for your first time. Might suggest a shirt without the bacon neck next time.
Is 2.0 L in america? In canada the ST model is 1.6L
is this the magnetic color from ford? or silver?
Is this available in the U.S. and will not void warranty?
+kenpoS2K MP275 is and will not void warranty.
Is the Mountune (sp?) available 50 states at Ford dealerships? It seems like a really nice balance of added power without sacrificing the daily driving dynamics of the car.
I'd check with whatever dealer is near you to see if they are a Mountune dealer, I had mine installed at Mountune USA in Fountain Valley, CA. For reference the MP packages are warranty friendly and the MR packages forgo the warranty if you have any issues later. That's not to say Ford won't fix the problem but you have the possibility of potential hassles later.
Jason Connor Have you had to go about using your warranty after having the MP package installed by Mountune? Also did you have a extended warranty including your base warranty after it being installed? Im curious and would love to get the MP275 just forgoing warranty is the hardest thing to do with a brand new car.
I've had one warranty issue I took the car back for TSB 13-9-7 related to the engine wire splice. The flashed the car back to stock so we could recreate the issue. Once they fixed the splice under warranty I flashed the MP275 software back on the car.
Ford tech's didn't really know about the Mountune setup but I explained and showed the documentation that Mountune provides. They just couldn't diagnose the car until it was fully on a Ford factory ECU. That's not a fault of Mountune it's just the hassle of getting any kind of warranty work done at a dealer.
Don't let it dissuade you, I really have enjoyed the product Mountune has offered and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. I'm 4k miles away from full warranty expiration and plan on going full custom tune from Mountunes custom ecu calibrator when it expires.
Thanks for to info, the only thing holding me back is my extended warranty. I haven't heard of anyone putting Mountune equipment and keeping their extended warranty valid. When you see you're 4k away are you talking your base warranty 4yr/36k bumper to bumper?
were are mountune dealers located ?
Good luck getting 280whp, about 260-270whp is all the stock turbo can do.
+Tyrone Clayton Just dynoed on Stage 3 91 at 275 wheel and 355 torque but I haven't dynoed my E40 numbers yet. My numbers here in the review were a bit off.
+Jason Connor (TerminatorConn) that's danger territory on 91oct. 275 is a good number on 93 oct. Getting the power safely is what u want not max the shit out of it till it's about to blowup. U may get that kind of power but the reliability will suffer.
Jason, what area do you live in?
+Michael Harris North County San Diego
Where is Jeff
good thing the RS will have a mustang 4 banger lol!
Man to be honest.. Your dyno numbers you claim its making are very strange for the st.. Your hp is really high for what it has and your tq is much lower than what it should be making.
210-215hp? I thought the ST had 252 stock?
VicDion Wright 252 is what the engine makes, but as the engine power goes through the transmission and axle (think it's called a trans-axle in front wheel drives or something like that?), some power is lost. you will find this in any car.
corey8084 It's interesting that they would quote that number though. The Focus ST has routinely been dyno'd at 225 to 230 hp at the wheels, stock. It also typically puts 260-270 lb/ft of torque to the wheels, despite being rated at 270 at the crank. His car is not a "factory freak." He's off on that.
Seen lots dyno around 230hp and 300+ tq completely stock
It's ok, in my opinion, that car is still too tame and needs like 50 more horses and the driver should be wearing a Tuxedo Tshirt with some chromed out ray ban aviators! Pretty awesome shoot though !
This freaking guy!
once, my right front brake was on fire haha.
This makes me wonder how much of a focus enthusiast this guy is. Sounds robotic has issues with brakes and things that I don't have an issue with. Learn how to drive it
Smh if you ride the brakes they are gonna get hot. It seems more like you tolerate this car rather than like it...
+4by108 Oh I love this car, I'm not a Focus enthusiast as I have ZERO brand or model loyalty. Stock pads get smoky and I've seen plenty actually set on fire, I'd rather have much less fade as I drive the car hard in the canyons.
+Jason Connor (TerminatorConn) wierd I have a bunch of friends that race professionally that I used to go out to Azusa canyon in SoCal when I lived there and while some of the lesser experienced drives did have issues I had no problems driving harder than most but just being wise with the brakes on my '13.
+Jason Connor (TerminatorConn) that being said people like things differently while I love my st my heart goes to my 03 2.3 focus with all Svt and Cosworth parts.
Got a gti qnd smesh it
autox isn't track time...
+Bob Last Anytime you put your car out there where it can get damaged in the pursuit of a timed lap is track time to me. I prefer actual circuit racing but never turn down some fun autocross time.
+Jason Connor (TerminatorConn) dont get me wrong, autox is plenty fun and I'm not trying to talk it down, but it is not the same thing as driving on a proper track. the driving experience is completely different and the way a car and its mods handles it is completely different. Just think of it the other way around, doing a track day in the vid and saying you took it to an autox... you wouldn't do that...
so much lag in the speach... this ford st............. is realy awesome because..................... mountune suspention is a............ good ........... damper blablabla
+Btwist ML First video review ever, I suggest you get in front of a camera and try it some time. You will never be good the first time out, it takes lots of experience to gain somewhat of an acceptable camera persona.
Mountune is only good if youre worried about keeping the factory warranty. they arent good for much else. if youre that worried about your warranty, dont upgrade your car at all. Spending that kind of money to get shit mountune results, just for the sake of a warranty doesnt make any sense. spend the money on real upgrades and for the same money you will be way better off. sure you might not have a warranty anymore but who cares. are you trying to be fast, or be economical?
The mk2 focus st is miles better than this
rsiguy1980 the version we didn't get in the states, and with less horsepower than this one here?
We do love a good turbo 5cyl, but this car would smoke that one...
yes less hp but a far stronger motor made by Volvo.. mine is 320bhp now..
rsiguy1980 What do you mean by "far stronger"? One ST that I know of is putting 500 down to the wheel.
+The Hooniverse I like the mk3, but the mk2 handles better. I have a mk2 ST with 300bhp, goes like stink.
+Nakke144 What do you mean.. how does it handle better?
Still slower than a 2008 Cobalt SS...
+TakeitEasyG Interior is still much nicer, don't like daily driving a tin can with plastic everywhere.
+Jason Connor (TerminatorConn) marginally nicer. A lot of cheap plastic in both. Not sure what you mean by tin can.
go take a dump or something you look constipated and don't take your car or yourself too seriously... have more fun with the car it's never going to be perfect anyway i think the car looks great.
+b k This is my first video review I shot and edited on my own as well as the first I've presented. It takes time to have natural presence in front of the camera. My newer reviews are getting better check them out and I'll always take constructive criticism.
I did pump and dump before the shoot, so I was nice and relaxed.
so 30 hp , wtf thats nothing, get that from a tgune alone and then it's even a safe tune. Fuck that shit
swansmeister
True , but this way around as per said they power band is more spread , there's no point in having in a huge power surge at very low rpm it won't pull off from the lights especially when wet n cold in Europe .
Also the turbo runs cooler on hot days which is a good thing no loss of power on a hot day .
Mark C what are you bazzeling, why are you insinuating that giving it more power then 30hp won't tune it that it has them over a wide powerband, thats what a good tuner will do, if you put an bigger fmic on it ypu will never run hot, seriously you like invested what? 2500euro or maybe more for 30hp, thats sick, over here you maybe get double for 1/4 of the money with just a propper ecu tune, you got 30 with a catback, fmic and remap, thars just retardedly bad.
swansmeister
No you can / we Europeans British !
Can go to many tuners with a catback zaust , Induction kit , sports cat remap can give about 280-290 bhp , but really I picked mine up just before winter set in . We had a cold frosty spell for a few months then nothing but rain . Mine had already the 275 installed I just want an exhaust now . But it was near un drivable . I could put the power down from standing start , and the backend goes from under my feet so easily I was shocked at first . I've driven BMW 325i , a few other Rwd cars even they behaved better than this fwd focus on a cold damp day.
Why would you have more power . Especially torque from low to mid rpm . ,
Mark C my advice, shouldn't have bought a fwd car and shoukd have waited for the rs, why woukd you wanna have more power, because more power is better if a car can put it down, I lean I know enough cars of my friends or myself who have massive power, all of thel are awd, quattro's or rwd. fwd sucks, I could never own a fwd, drives so bad.
swansmeister
I had no idea the Mk3 focus chassis was so bad I just thought the reviews were being overly harsh . I struggle to use 275 bhp , how mountune got a figure 0-60 in 5.9 is questionable ,
I agree in principle there are cheaper ways to mod the car
this vidya is all over the place
Better videos are in the future I assure you.
Get rid of the long intro
Who is this jabroni? This dude is a terrible host.
