    Howard Dean's 50 State Solution. I was part of that, calling around 4500 people, getting 61 people to volunteer, training them, and keeping track of the results. When walking my own precinct (155 doors) I talked to a man who recognized me as playing the cello at his wedding over 20 years earlier. I learn more from the people I talk to than they learn from me.

      Exactly! The Overton window is so far to the right in this country, basic things the rest of the developed world has had for almost 80 years (affordable college, universal healthcare, PPTO) are called communist. Blatantly fascist social policies and the rich/corporations not paying any taxes are the default.

    This is pedantic a little bit but... I wish people wouldn't separate "working class" from "have a college degree". Most of the people I went to college with have working class jobs. Those two groups are not distinct anymore, and the working class people with thousands of dollars in debt because that degree turned out to be worthless in a difficult job economy are just as angry. I like what this guy is saying, but I wish he didn't feel like he had to disagree so often on the framing. It's okay to say the Democrats messed up. It's actually really important to say that.
    Edit because this took off. I know most Republican voters are not college educated. My argument is that we need to ignore them and instead look at the huge margin of people who do not vote at all. That group is always overlooked and it is not one that has the same distinction. Working class people often do not bother voting at all.

    • @puppypersonlotr4538
      @puppypersonlotr4538 15 днів тому

    • @pebblepod30
      @pebblepod30 15 днів тому

      @puppypersonlotr4538
      But what does "Progressive"mean to Voters outside your bubble?
      To them it means something very different.
      Tell me that the majority of ppl who call themselves "Progressive" (whatever that means to you), don't also have other postions on culture war that tend to alienate people in the Working Class, who are outside that bubble?
      For example, do you think the rest of the Working Class want their daughters to compete with biological males at their local school?
      Or want do they want Open Borders?
      So my question to you is: do you acknowledge that a lot of "Progressives" tend to destroy Working Class Solidarity by demanding or expecting agreement on culture war, esp extreme positions?
      It follows then that destroying Oligarchy means sacrificing some of your politics, to get what you really want.

      @pebblepod30 I don't tolerate bigoted language much. So folks who whine about open borders (dog whistle) and biological males (pseudoscience transphobic) aren't folks I spend time with. Not all of us are well suited for outreach to MAGA.

      it is not hard to distinguish a democrat from a republican. democrats are, at their most right-leaning, fairly standard-issue centrist politicians. republicans at their most right-leaning are outright nazis. the most left-wing democrat we have is elizabeth warren who wants single-payer healthcare, universal free childcare & pre-k, free public college, reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, and a wealth tax (among about 7000 other things). the most left-wing republican we have is mitt romney. and even mitt romney is more conservative than the most right-wing democrat.

      @Bat_Boy Allowing a system where drawing lines makes a difference should NEVER happen. It's supposed to measure the will of the people, so line on a map should never affect outcomes. Any district based first past the post systems leads to a two party state. Any two party system leads to corruption.
      People in the US should start a new party with the single goal of fixing democracy, nothing else. Once democracy is fixed you can start fixing all the other issues, but this one is the root cause and needs to be fixed first.

      California has an independent commission.

I'm still paying off my student loans from 12 years ago, make just under six figures, and I feel I'm doing alright now. But I've been poor all my adult life and lived paycheck to paycheck until just last year, so I still can't afford a house without more crippling debt and a terrible interest rate, still don't have dividends or a retirement fund or whatever... I'm college educated, but I feel like I've only just begun to keep my head above the ocean water in this crippling economy. So I get it, and I agree with you. We just need to admit that we are slightly better off and got LUCKY in the rigged system that is our workforce/economy, but we do still feel that we are in the same boat as the working class. As someone who genuinely came from it up until recently, I absolutely feel that way. Thanks for making this argument... We are a gray area of voters that needs to be reached by our representatives!

      I think the next generation of Democratic leadership needs to be led by people who are able to talk “on the cuff,” are quick on their feet, and don’t resort to memorized phrases and platitudes (like the “corporatists” as John said). I truly wanted Kamala to win and have a ton of respect for her, but the “rehearsed” rhetoric sank her campaign. There was a surge of energy for her at first, but it plateaued because people realized that she kept repeating the same speech, and every interviewer asked different questions but her answers were always the same rehearsed lines. It was an enormous missed opportunity not to sit with Theo Von and Rogan. Or maybe it wasn’t because her team knew she couldn’t handle going “off script” for 3 hours. We need political leadership who aren’t afraid to go on these podcasts and can talk like normal human beings. Although the “bro podcast” sphere leans right, a lot of those folks are either moderate or apolitical. So many persuadable voters that they missed (and yes if you want to be president of the entire country, you need to meet voters where they are).
      It’s really less about ideology (most democrats believe in basically the same things anyway), but more about how articulate, nimble, and persuasive of a speaker one is. Biden was an utter disaster in that sense and Kamala won most of the coalition back, but let’s be honest here, she wasn’t persuading any new people.
