I am a self taught artist and over the years I just stumbled onto a few things that you pointed out in this video. But you have opened a whole new universe for me by sharing this valuable information. You are well schooled and I do appreciate your unselfishness in doing these videos. Thanks brother.

chroma, saturation, intensity, colorfulness.. those are used interchangeably, but all mean slightly different things:

You are the simplest and kindest art teacher I have seen . My art teacher didn't tell me about a single element . He didn't even say that they exist 😅

  • @eldestkatt3839

For all of the digital artists out there, chroma is usually labelled as saturation on drawing programs. You can almost always find the chroma (saturation) changer as a slider or as the line across the diagonal of the colour square where one side is 100% black and the other is the most vibrant shade of the colour. I hope this helps!

I have been an artist for 30 years and this is the first time I think I have finally gotten my head around exactly what edge means. I still struggle with value and edge and so few people seem to talk about how to know when to use which type of edge when, that I just kept trying to emulate without entirely understanding. Being self taught is so much more difficult. Thank you for making art education accessible to people like me who are poor and disabled, unable to likely ever get to a physical arr class in the future.
I'm working on watching your whole anatomy series, then I'm going ongo back and watch it again and do all the assignments. I figure it will stick better if I watch it more than once.
    Thank you for existing.

I think you need to do "Blind contour Drawing" to improve your visual concentration. You can look it up, but its basically pick a subject and WITHOUT looking away or at your paper, follow the edges of the subject with your eye and let your pencil follow the same movements at a slow consistent speed changing to edges of other objects as you come across them..
In time your eye will become more sensitive to those edges and consequently, resulting shapes of light and shadow.

cross hatching is not just a thing to check off a list. Cross hatching requires extreme precision from your drawing hand. It takes a huge amount of time and muscle memory. You need to have control of the speed, translation(movement from side to side) as well as the amount of pressure your hand exerts. There are also a variety of ways to achieve hatching. Perhaps Stan can go over the various ways that it can be done. Hopefully he also provides to neat tips and tricks.

As an artist for 5 decades...@ in my humble opinion...Beginners may feel intimidated by ALL the technicle angles you share. Art is a reflection on many levels. Personal for each individual student or person. Its about " letting go" experimenting...having fun or whatever. BUT yes....learning some BASICs like Color theory, etc. comes in handy for painting, pastels or colored pencils. Just thot my input could HELP students to RELAX. NOT worrying about This or That UNTIL they've had some time to get loose, have some fun experimenting @ the chance get their feet wet in Art Expression. Hoping my humble opinion HELPs someone....along the path of creativity. Thanks for listening.

Stan, looks like the last comment was 6 years ago. Wow. I'm late to the party. Have painted and drawn since adolescence. I build as well. Coming back to this to update my rusty knowledge and lack of! LOL! This video has fewer views than others you've done. But it's one I will review many times although it won't help the algorithm. Will be using this to improve my drawing and desire to sketch my projects as I'm not to computer literate. LOL! Shapes forms and hues. Relating to grey scale and light and color. Gonna take a bit to get my aging head around and stick it there, LOL! Again late to the party but enjoying the vibes of your past trail blazing. Thanks!
