    Hola!...Per your request from Reddit...for suggestions and guidance:
    My primary advice (and hope!) is that you do not destroy the history of the architecture with inappropriate materials or practices that too many "modern renovators/contractors" do to these ancient structures...
    All the masonry issues I saw in the video are because modern cement was used to "patch" the original masonry and this too often traps interstitial moisture and causes the cracking, delamination, and mold you are seeing coming through the wall...
    The wood main carrying beam with corbel in the...el almacén...will need to be looked at more closely and should only be replaced by someone with authentic skills and credentials as a Timberwright as this is a major structural beam that may still actually be in good shape and only need some repair...but if replacement is required then I would have to see more videos/pictures and have you do some tests to determine the best approach...
    The "Dovecote" (La Palomar) looked to be in excellent condition and is a vestige of a wonderful history that some still practice today in parts of Spain, but you probably know this already...LOL.
    The roof areas (La cámara, Palomar, and your last shots) actually look to be in pretty good condition other than some roof tile that needs to be replaced, yet this is hard to ascertain fully from just a video without more questions. It is not actually "made of sticks and stones" at all but rather some very iconic forms of hipped roofing timbers covered by a "torching mortar" over traditional reed on which the clay tile is bedded in more torching and clay mortar. These types of roofs can last 300 years or more but do need to be taken care of and maintained if a tile moves in the wind for some reason or just shifts out of place from time.
    I look forward to seeing more videos...and thank you so much for sharing this...!!!

      Thank you so much for taking the time to comment in the video! It really means a lot ✨🤎 I absolutely agree, preservation is really important for us. However, in Spain it’s really hard to find contractors and builders that would respect the original materials and history of your home, as they are so used to seeing this type of house that they don’t see it as special and historical but rather old and cramped. It’s very hard to get to someone that will see the real value of houses like these as they are abandoned all over the country, and when you do find someone that is into preservation it’s incredibly expensive. As for the roof, I’m afraid we already had to make a rush decision last year after a really scary torrential rain, badly advised and pressured for the lack of money (you’ll see more of that in the next video) Actually, that was one of the main turning points for us to start this UA-cam channel. We wanted to preserve the home as close as the original design and we didn’t want to make such a rush decision ever again for lacking money. We wanted some advice and guidance from people like you seeing it from an outside perspective. In the end, that was the reason why we bought this house and not a new and modern one, to preserve as much as we could its original beauty. ✨

      You are most welcome...!!!🙂
      Parts of Spain and many parts of Europe have very strict rules and even laws for what...can...and...CAN NOT!!!...be done to historic structures...!!!
      Sadly, you are also correct that..."modern contractors"...seldom follow these rules/laws and take advantage of the home or property owner not knowing them...yet still "overcharge" the client as if they have followed these rules and regulations...
      Only on very expensive architecture, or that which a museum or the government owns do they get inforced fully...OR!!!...LOL...where a home/property owner is lucky enough (or wise enough?) to hire..or have a friend...hint, hint...😉...lol...to oversee...🧐...what a contractors/builders making sure they do things correctly by providing the proper guidance and mandates (called "historic specifications" in our industry) for what they may...and...MAY NOT DO...in the application of...what is called, "like for like...within means, method, and material applications in concordance to the circa date of the historic fabrics being repaired and/or replaced."
      Yes, in most cases...Historic Restoration Specialists..are very expensive, $$$ as is the authentic work we do physically on the project (e.g. timber framing, stone carving, plastering, etc) However, since you have put yourself out here on the web, and asked for help...if...???...if you (and your family) would like someone to play the role of "oversite" on your homes restoration, I would be glad to serve in that capacity..." pro bono,".... as I am what we call here in America "working retired"...LOL...and I no longer charge for services on projects like yours unless I have to "come in person" but then I only charge for expenses as I do not charge a fee on projects that interest me or I believe deserve such attention because the owners are trying their best to "do right" by the architecture they now steward over...At a minimum, you have someone to ask questions of when you have them...
      I'm sorry to read about the roof and I hope you did not lose it to a contractor's poor advice...!!!...as that really rather destroyed the entire character, charm, and history of the home if they replaced it with a modern steel or stud and plywood roof...I will know more once I see what they have done, and I'm sorry you have had to go through this...
      I do look forward to your next video and in the meantime, feel free to reach out on Reddit with more pictures and specific questions so others can learn too as you will what is "best practice" and what is not...Feel free to also reach out directly to me by email as well...
      Blessings,
      j

    Hi! I saw your comment on one of sunbeamsjess's recent videos in which you said she inspired you to start this channel and make videos on this renovation! Looking forward to seeing the transformation!
    Are you going to be adding another bathroom? I was surprised you said there's only one.

      Hi! Thank you so much for taking the time to comment, and welcome to this journey with us! ✨ For now we will live with just one bathroom as we don’t really need much more and we have other priorities. But who knows what the future holds?

    Hola! para ver cuándo se construyó la casa puedes mirarlo en la web del catastro!

    • @myspanishhome
      @myspanishhome  Рік тому

      Muchas gracias! Hemos mirado y en el catastro pone que es de 1920, sin embargo tanto la arquitectura como el estado de algunos de los materiales cuando los comparamos con otras casas de la época nos sugieren que puede ser mucho más antigua. Quizá hicieron la casa a partir de otra anterior, no sabemos 🤔

    What a big, beautiful house! And you have so much history there.
    I am an American who is planning on moving to Andalucia and buying an old house so that I don't have a mortgage or rent payment. I'm almost 60, so I'm planning for my future. I would like to retire there.
    To be honest, I am also escaping the political scene here in the United States. I'm a member of the LGBTQ community, and we are being horribly scapegoated by the American Right.
    We in my generation have fought for a long time to secure the rights we have, only to watch them get taken away. Fascism is scary.
    I know the Spanish unfortunately understand that better than we do.

      @@stevenduvall2549 thank you! And I'm very sorry to hear that you're struggling. It's a shame how some people try to make us think that we don't belong to our own countries just because we're not part of a socially accepted stereotype. To be honest, fascism is not only taking over the US but Europe too. However, we can't take any steps back! There might be some people making lots of noise but love is always louder. Love always wins! I wish you a lovely holiday if you celebrate 🏳️‍🌈🤍✨

      Thank you for your kind and thoughtful words.
      I understand that there are efforts by those on the right to dominate not only here in America but also in Europe. I hope Europeans don't allow that to happen.
      Unfortunately, many Americans are so much less educated and informed than Europeans that most of the right wingers I come across couldn't even define something like fascism or socialism if you asked them. I'm hoping that education and awareness will make Europeans more resistant to right-wing propaganda.
      On a happier note, yes I celebrate the holidays and love the Christmas season. I call it Chrismahanukwanzaakah (Christmas+Hanukkah+Kwanzaa) as a light-hearted attempt at inclusivity!
      So, happy Chrismahanukwanzaakah!

    It looks like there is a lot of structural degradation to my untrained eyes. Is that going to be something that will be fixed on your own? This looks like it will be a very big and hard process.

    • @myspanishhome
      @myspanishhome  Рік тому

      Yes, there is a lot of degradation, mostly in the older part. The bigger parts like the roof or some of the ceilings will be done by professionals, as we don’t have the skills to make such big renovation projects.
