Complete 19" flat-pack rack assembly in under 5 minutes
Datacentres are often located in rooms and spaces which are awkward to access, such as office basements and other underground storage facilities. With standard 42U cabinets standing at over 2 meters tall it can be hard to navigate narrow corridors, doorways and staircases, meaning that installation can be a lengthy process. To remedy this some manufactures are now producing 'flat-pack' solutions which make transport easy. But does the assembly time negate the time savings made during transport?
Alan Lewis, Business Development Manager for Retex UK, explains how the company's Logic2 flat-pack rack can be assembled in less than five minutes and can reduce installation time by 75 percent.
Fully assembled cabinets are bulky and can be awkward to move into position in a datacentre once they have been delivered. Often two people are required to carry it while a third is needed to help negotiate tight corners or steep staircases. In extreme cases this process can take an hour or more which can add a significant amount of cost to the initial installation of the centre. Flat-pack designs offer a solution to this issue of transport and can allow one or two people (depending on rack size) to quickly move a rack into position ready for assembly.
Of course the cost saving effectiveness of these designs is reliant to two factors: the speed with which the rack can then be assembled and the reliability of the finished product.
