    Get ya a decent 0-1 micrometer that has a vernier to read tenths, .0001. And Mic the brass just above the case head. A bulge in this area greater than .0005 will show before you start cratering and flattening primers. Make notes of the dimension and you have a good idea where your pressure is at. I learned this technique many years ago competing in benchrest, those old guys sure know their stuff.

      Haha saw how old this was and instantly became sad . I can’t find 2520 anymore and it’s my favorite. Did get some N140 and that is good but when mag dumping into trash as one does it makes the gun noticeably hotter than anything else I’ve used

    I was really hoping for a better showing from BL-C(2), but I should have known better. It's a great plinking load with 55 grain loads, pretty much my go-to. Thanks for all the info brother!! Great videos!!

    • @JohnnysReloadingBench
      @JohnnysReloadingBench  7 років тому +5

      I was too! It shot pretty darn well on the low end, though. Powders act so differently in various cartridges, or with different bullet weights in the same cartridge, that I really try not to "hate" specific powders. They all have a place somewhere in the infinite world of barrel/bullet/primer/brass combinations! I'll be sure to test BL-C(2) with some 55gr bullets very soon!

    You should have bought the Western Powders No 1 handload manual while it was in print, or look for a used one. Western provided true 5.56mm NATO data. I wouldn't get too hung up on the Black Hills load, although I'm sure it's great. They are simply following what Chris Kyle had originated. A 77 gr. OT Match bullet leaving the muzzle at a minimum 2700 FPS velocity, and you'll need NATO data to do that safely from a 16" barrel. The purpose was to get the bullet to "tumble" out to 300 yards. I worked up the Mk 262 Mod 0 some years ago while also being curious about how the SIERRA 77 gr. bullet performed at shorter distances. It did poorly enough that I began working with the Hornady 75 that you get in the TAP 2 and the NATO Match. And because velocity potential is a bit higher than necessary with AA 2520 and TAC, the goal was 2750 FPS from 16" barrels while the Hornady 75 is a heavier constructed bullet that stays together. It also allows you to load at 2.250" and crimp the case-mouth into the bullets cannelure. Taper Crimp in my case. And with the charge of TAC decided on because of velocity and uniformty, from a good barrel 10 rounds over the chrono will give an average Standard Deviation of 10 FPS or less using depending on the primer. The standard CCI 400 SRP is capable. Now is this load more accurate than the Black Hills? You'll have to see for yourself, from your rifle. From a Colt's/Bold Ideas CRX 16", we saw 1/2 MOA for 10 rounds.

    It makes sense that accuracy would fall apart on the high end with the blc2..I use 26.0 for my 55 grain fmjs..I could see 25+ grains being a bit much for 77 grain..I appreciate you sharing your expertise with us. You've helped me develop my own loads with your testing a few times now..

    I noticed that your using LC Brass but all different date stamps on the head of the brass. This means different lots of brass. I ran into same problems with my groups opening up using mixed LC brass. with TAC powder. Now I use only one lot of brass either Nosler , Lapua. or Star. My groups srank down to less half minute of angle @ a hundred yards. My best has been 0.255"

    My uncle got me started reloading in the early 70"s for a brand new at the time Model 88 Winchester in .308 Win. that I bought new at the time and still own. Has taken about forty deer and a box car load of coyotes sense then and is still a tack driver. I tried BLC 2 back then in it. and the best memory of it was the stuff was the basketball sized fireballs at the muzzle when you squeezed a round off. From then on for years IMR 4064 was all I needed to know to load .308's. In my recent elder years I've tried Varget and other powders in it and my experience with the .308 is that about anything that will get a bullet out of the barrel will shoot good. I think I still have a partial 50 year old can of BLC 2.

    The higher end of BLC(2) did the same for me. Both from 20” A1 with 4-16 optic and a 11.5” CAR with eotech +magnifier, I would get 3/4 shots grouped good and then it’d go high left 1-3 inches, no matter if it was hot/cold, suppressed/3 prong/muzzle brake/bare muzzle. Hotter loads showed wild groups, but 24.9/25.1 was the sweet spot with 77gr Berger and Sierra SMK 77s. No.41 primers, SIG 5.56x45 brass. In my experience. Love ya videos, got me going on the Mk248 Mod 0/Mod1 for my Mk13 Mod 0 build.

    Supressor causing secondary pressure spike? I run 25gr blc2 with a 77smk for NRA service rifle and usually run .500" groups 100 yards. Iv run the 77s up to 27gr before wich dicks up the brass quite proper. I'm back to BLC2 this year with the tipped 77smk. Might try shooters world / Lovex match rifle powder for hits and giggles.

    I think at the higher velocities and preasure the barrel was starting to have trouble, inconsistently stabilizing the bullets with the combo and/or are what i call presure curve gas system anomalies.the preasure in the gas system could have been just at the point where the bolt starts and was just beginning the unlocking process as the bullets about to leave barrel the bolt carrier is just beginning to movement rearward travel the movement creates the flyers. Its the get right warning thats ussually followed by bent case rims when the ever higher faster crowd people like me keep PUSHING forward for no good reason

    Barrels whip, and if the bullet leaves the barrel in the middle of the whip when the barrel is really moving along, it can be all over the place as a slight variation means the bullet leaves at a different location, but if the barrel whip is slowing to return the way it came the barrel is moving slower and the bullets are closer to the same spot when they leave the barrel, so are more accurate.

    Not sure what your prevailing density altitude is, but when I lived in the Southern California, I used AA2520, a wolf small rifle primer, and a lake city case and got 2908 FPS from a 20 inch RRA 8 twist barrel with no pressure signs. ( it was on the ragged edge though) When I moved back to North Carolina that load blew primers and I had to tear apart the rest of my stash and work up a new load then reassemble my stash. My point is that if you haven't reached your goal yet and haven't tried AA2520, you can get good speed with it in a 20 inch barrel. I'm now in the 2800 range. Don't forget, the velocity data for real mk262 was with an 18 inch barrel. With a longer barrel you can get really good numbers.
    Also, in both my old RRA barrel, my BCM 7 twist barrel, and my new Criterion hybrid barrel, none of them can tell the difference between Nosler 77's, Sierra 77's, and hornady 75's no matter what powder I was using.

Will show the marks that you are talking about. I believe that if it it colored and has a hit the hit will show where it marks the brass. I think.

    I shot some imr 4320 with cci450 and hornady 75hpbt and was getting groups of the .46 &.47 during my work up, my loads were past hodgdon data but didn't show much of any thing on the primer and wasn't getting ejecter swipes, wondering if you've heard anything on it, the burn rate is very close to varget and is pretty cheap in my area. Also results on par or better than varget in my 6br, so far.

    I'm pretty new to loading, but I didn't see anything about your barrel twist rate ... Could it be that your barrel doesn't like stabilizing the heavier bullets with the slightly hotter loads ?... It seemed to me that when you got much over 24 gr. the groups started opening up like a 1-9 barrel might do ... I'm a rookie so take this as possible bs . lol

    In my Daniel defense it mostly hates cfe223 and shoots big groups like you were seeing with blc. So far I’ve found one combination that works decent to at least get rid of the rest of the powder I have. Varget seems to work a lot better. I want to try tac and maybe some other powders. It seems like cci 41’s throw off groups as well idk what the heck that’s about.

    BLC2 is finicky but accuracy can be achieved, one thing to watch is primer pocket depth and consistent brass as in the length of the solid portion of the case head. Blc2 can get wired because it doesn't like to light consistently, I had tonnes of the stuff and had the $motivation to figure it out so I could use what I had. Some of my best groups with a 6br no turn neck and my A2 service rifle. ..my teamate uses VV140 with the 77s and swears Buy it.

  • @HypocriticYT

    with BLC2 would a different bullet perform better? Seems the extra pressure is ramming the bullet down the bore at a slight cant? Maybe bullet jacket or bearing length changes things?

    You've hooked me. I have a 308 winchester with a 20 inch barrel. Oal is 2.750. I've measured a cut case and bullet and it measured 2.883 and fits nicely in the magazine. I'm not sure what load to safely start with and what the pressure change this would cause by changing the oal. Can u steer me in a safe direction. Nosler etip recommends 2.750 with a varget load 42.5 low to 46.5 as high. Thanks....

    • @JohnnysReloadingBench
      @JohnnysReloadingBench  7 років тому +1

      150, 168, or 180? Why do you want to go longer? Are you not happy with the accuracy at 2.750"?
      Going longer is generally not a big deal, since that means more room in the case, which means lower pressure and velocity for the same charge weight. As you get really close to the lands or jam into them, I've always read that you can experience a quick pressure spike and need to watch out. For that reason I would suggest staying back off the lands until you are more comfortable.
      I would suggest loading up some rounds at 750, 775, 800, 825, 850, and 875. Then go shoot them and see what happens. Start short and work your way long, watching pressure signs as you go.

    • @1976kingdom
      @1976kingdom 7 років тому

      You might not know this but you need to check each different bullet you shoot for absolute OAL. (I.e. 150gr, 168 gr, 175gr, etc) Different profiles to the ogive will give different OAL.

    • @67REBELSSTAMC
      @67REBELSSTAMC 7 років тому

      1976kingdom. All the factory loads give me a 2 plus inch group at 100yrds. I didn't know if the .100 plus jump was to much affecting my accuracy,.

    • @1976kingdom
      @1976kingdom 7 років тому

      Usually if you can get the bullet seated about 15 thousandths off the lands you can find accuracy. However, this is very bullet dependent. Some bullets make the jump just fine. If you're shooting a stock Remington 700 they have notoriously long throats (transition between chamber and lands) this allows for a wide range of factory ammo to be consistently accurate.
      Now to you're original question. I still would work up to the max charge carefully even with the extra case capacity that the longer seated bullet will give you. So whatever powder and bullet combo you are using go by whatever the manual (powder or bullet) recommends. Then if you reach max charge and there is no pressure signs work your way up by no more than 2 tenths of a grain at a time. What I usually do is find my most accurate powder charge at 2.800 OAL then slowly work my OAL length out and see if tightens my group up.

    I like blc2 because of the history the price all the stories and before u crank the pressure it was shooting 1/2moa lots of controversy but this has been around forever it’s a economic fast to produce powder and has been since ww1 ! The first batch ot ran apparently lasted almost 60 yrs ! And has spawned dozens of other powders with variations. Like wc748 I’m loving that one right now cool burn low flash and cheap

  • @jenpsakiscousin4589
    @jenpsakiscousin4589 4 роки тому

    Ball-C-2 has had a lot of variability in burn rates through the years. Not so much lot to lot but throughout its history as a whole. I have shot probably 50 lbs of it over the years and my notebooks show that the stuff from 10 years ago took almost 2gr less powder to reach the same velocity than a lot from present day, in a. 222 rem that's a pretty big change. I think some of the data that is in the leading books incoorperate some old data especially for powders that ahve been around a long time like BLC2.

      I don't have direct experience with the Lee but I've heard good things about it! I don't think an average reloader would notice the alignment and concentricity differences you mention. I only recently got a concentricity gauge, so maybe I will run some tests in a future video.

    Thanks JRB for another great video. Those magnetospeed chronometers seem a bit fussy to how they are set up and their distance from the bore line. I know you can change the sensitivity from Regular to Hi and Hi2. Which sensitivity worked best for you when you are doing your testing with the Omega?

    • @JohnnysReloadingBench
      @JohnnysReloadingBench  7 років тому

      The sensitivity settings on my V3 go from 1-11. 2 is the default and that is what I used for all jacketed bullets. For lead bullets I sometimes need to bump it up to 3.

    • @wbpursell
      @wbpursell 7 років тому +1

      Thanks. I have the cheap-o version of the magnetospeed that doesn't have the same fine tuning as the V3--I only get 3 choices. However, you are still a big help. I am guessing that I would need to use either regular or Hi 1. I should have bought the more expensive magnetospeed but now it's too late. I am stuck with the "sport" version for now.

    • @JohnnysReloadingBench
      @JohnnysReloadingBench  7 років тому

      The underlying technology of the sporter is the same, as far as I know! I've often wished I had bought the sporter version and saved the money! If you are having problems, I would suggest putting it on normal sensitivity (unless you're shooting lead) and focusing on the distance to the bore line. I was nervous about getting it too close in the beginning but that's what it takes! I also chased my tail a bit at first with the sensitivity but soon learned to just leave it alone at the standard setting. Does the sporter come with the alignment guide rod? If not, a dowel rod down the bore or a piece of 1/4" square metal rod from the hardware store might help a lot!

    Seems like you got the best SD’s of any of your loads at the upper end of TAC. On the one hand, the BH ammo didn’t have swipes or rings on the head. On the other hand, your pet load with 2520 looked to have some flattened primers, whereas these do not. Obviously, you do you when it comes to safety, but I think there is a node in there worth investigating. I’d narrow my charges to 24.3 - 24.7, trying both of these primers. It’s just too hard to discard those single digit SD’s. And I’m not so convinced those case marks are all that bad. I’ve seen worse on factory ammo, plus it could be an indication of excessive shoulder bump in your sizing die...

    • @keithreinert5835

    Load question. I have CFE223 and 220gr SMKs, what's a good load for an 18" AR10? I guess whatever is 5% under max would be fine, but I can't find much info on 220gr 308 loads
    Also, do you publish your load data anywhere? I'd be interested in using some of your data (not your max loads, but stuff just short of what you really wanted.)

    • @JohnnysReloadingBench
      @JohnnysReloadingBench  7 років тому +2

      Hornady manual to the rescue! That's why I love the Hornady manual so much, and why you see it in just about every video. They always seem to have the weird and less common stuff covered.
      For the Hornady 220gr ELD-X at 2.800" they show CFE223 37.0-42.6. 2200 fps from a 22" barrel. That should be enough to get you started. Start low, work your way up as usual.
      I don't really have load data, per se. I am reading from a load manual or a powder website in each video. 300 blackout subsonics are just about the only exception, and I haven't really compiled my findings. I usually have to go back and watch my own videos to remember things!

    Question, with a 223 wylde chamber can you load up with 556 data?
    Thanks

    • @CJ-ty8sv
      @CJ-ty8sv 7 місяців тому

      I know this is old and you likely already found the answer to this but in case not and more so for others that might read and wonder the same thing,
      Yes... That was the whole point of the Wylde "chamber" (its really just the throat that is different). It is a config derived to allow 5.56 to be fired with closer to .223 Rem accuracy but not the over pressure risk that comes from firing 5.56 in a .223 "chamber" (again, the only differences are in the throat).
      When the 5.56 chamber specs were designed, it was chosen to make the free bore diameter a slight bit larger and longer for a number of reasons and it allowed for the cartridge to also be loaded to higher pressure but the sacrifice was accuracy. One of the reasons for the larger and longer throat was to reduce likelihood of dangerous overpressure situations if the inside of the barrel get wet and to prevent jams if small debris (sand and dirty and such) gets into it. The Wylde chamber (throat) is basically the .223 throat diameter (which help bring back the accuracy) but with the longer throat length and leade angle of the 5.56 chamber. The idea of it is that the concern for debris and water is not an issue in the civilian side of things unlike military side so reduce the diameter brings back the accuracy but keep the long throat to deal with the higher load pressures.
      This is one thing that Johnny here used to always seem to have backward when talking about seating depth and saying that seating deeper will cause higher pressure which is opposite of what is true. While pressure does tend to rise a bit faster when you seat deeper, the peak pressure is however often lower when you seat deeper. This is why the Wylde allows you to safely fire 5.56. The longer throat is essentially the same as seating deeper.
      In general, the closer the bullet is to the lands, the higher the peak pressure will be for a given load because the bullet has to engrave into the lands before it can get going down the barrel. By seating deeper (or by lengthening the throat for the same seating depth), you are giving the bullet a longer running start before it has to engrave into the lands. This then allows the bullet to get further into the barrel before enough powder had burnt to achieve peak pressure.
      This can easily be tested (and has been many many times) by loading a cartridge to the point of peak pressure with the bullet touching the lands and then with that same powder charge, firing it with the bullet well off the lands and test will show that you are no longer at the same peak pressure, even as little as .010 jump can be worth several thousand PSI drop with certain combinations.
      Think of it like this, if you walk up to a closed door (like say a bedroom door) and just put your shoulder into it with all the force you can, most people will not be able to bust it open. No on the other hand, stand back and take a running start at it and most people will be able to bust it open and those who do will only kind of fall into the room when the door gives way. Now stand back away from the door and take a running start at it. Most will not only bust through the door but will make it well into the room before they can slow down and stop.
      All in all, it doesn't take much pressure (force really) to get the bullet to leave the case but it take quite a bit to get it to engrave into the lands and and get going down the barrel. By giving it a running start, it can get to a higher speed (remember energy is a product of mass and velocity) and thus more energy to engrave and make its way down the barrel and the further it can get down the barrel as the powder burns, the slower the pressure will rise and the lower the peak will be.
