If you're not playing the flute with the LIP PLATE in exactly the right spot, you won't even know you're doing it wrong.
But you'll definitely be thinking that your SOUND could be better, that HIGH NOTES are a bit hard, and that you're probably not going to win any gold medals at playing the flute in the Olympics!
Like my lovely student Bronwyn said recently:
"I haven't been placing my lip in exactly the right spot, and that's why I've struggled I think at getting the middle octave. Now, with correct embouchure placement, you should hear the difference between low and middle octaves. This makes me extremely happy!
So I made you this 4 minute video to let you check that you're doing things correctly.
Oh, and I've included some good DEMOS of how you will look (and feel!) if the lip plate is TOO HIGH and TOO LOW.
I look forward to showing you!
Jane xx

I've been playing the flute for 8 years now and I still come to your videos to learn how to improve, thanks! :)
That's great to hear Alex!
That was really helpful thx I play flute in the band but everyone is better than me this is helpful to catch up
Great to hear Pokemon - good on you for looking up videos to help you, and I'm glad it was helpful!
THIS INSTANTLY IMPROVED MY TONE! I tried playing low c which was really difficult and some days it would be alright and some days it would not show up. Using this technique made my note sounds very consistent and produced a richer sound on low c. This did not disappoint thank you 😊
Yay that's so awesome to hear Emily! Woohoo! Keep up the good work! 😊

Thank you Jane. I'm normally a saxophone player and I'm looking to play flute soon. This will come in handy when I start!
Thanks Michael! Good to know :)
I found a huge difference after day 1 of your 3 day course. Thank you. Can't wait till I can do day 2!
So glad the mini course helped you Christine! For anyone else reading this comment who wants to do the free mini-course too, you can find it here: www.flute.school/free
THANK YOU SO MUCH for this video! I joined the band in school, and this helped me a lot but when you put on all the other parts together it's a bit difficult. I learned something new! TYSM
You're so welcome Not Ella! Best of luck in your school band!
This helps where books don't, a video certainly makes things much clearer :0)
yes that's so true isn't it! Glad it help you :)
Thank you for taking the time to do this video, very helpful!

I'm learning the flute by myself and other videos seem to focus on how much of the hole should be covered but that is not something that you can really feel, so whenever I put the flute to my lips, every single time it was kind of random how good my sound would be.
Also, I think my lips are on the thinner side, so following those instructions, it my lip plate was always too low! Using this method, my tone really did instantly improve and on top of that, I also finally know how to maintain the position now. Thank you Jane!
That's excellent to hear Eaglefriend! So glad your tone improved :) Jane
How is everybody else getting it.....I tried so hard and yet I came no where.....sad
Thank you so much! After playing in my school’s concert I never realized I was putting my flute too high! Your videos are very helpful!
You are so welcome! 😀
This was a great help in building my first flute. A bit difficult, designing an instrument you've never played. Thanks a million!
Glad to hear my video helped! 😊
Hey Jane 👋
I have just started to play the play the Indian bamboo flute and struggling with the lip placement 😃 Found your video helpful. Thanks 💓
That's great to hear Sumit! Yes, Indian bamboo flute has a similar embouchure to the classical flute :)
Thank you so much miss I got my flute today and you helped me how to play ty
That's so exciting! All the best with your flute journey! 😊
Thank you so much Jane!!!!!
You're very welcome Jayalakshmi :)
Wow your video helped me to get an actual note to come out! I've only just started the flute and my lip form is not great but this helped. Now I just need to get my sound to not be so 'airy'. Hard to describe but when I play a note I hear both the note and a very windy sound
Hey I'm so glad the video helped you get a note out! If you haven't done the free mini course to get a clearer sound, I'd recommend it! Register for it here: www.flute.school/free Part of getting your sound to not be so airy-sounding is to get a smaller hole in your mouth. You'll see demos in the mini-course. Good luck! Jane
@@JaneFluteSchool thanks! I actually did do the mini course, it was really helpful. I'm still practicing the basics though because my sound isn't totally clear like yours. Recently I made a change to play with my embouchure to the side of my lip rather than center since that's where it naturally was most comfortable and that has also helped. Do you think I should keep practicing one or two notes until I can get rid of the 'fluffy' sound or should I continue learning additional notes even if they won't sound right?
Jane, thank you so much for your videos, especially the Lip Plate video! After watching your video, I made a small change...and voila!....a much better tone in all registers! Thanks a million!
That's awesome to hear Michael! Glad you're enjoying my videos! 😊

Just bought a fly. My favourite video very clear, and confident teaching. Thank you.
Thanks so much! 😊
I’m an absolute beginner on flute, and I can get a sound out of just the head joint, but as soon as I assemble the rest, I get no sound at all? I’ll try the mirror test to see if I’m placing lips correctly.
Hi 👋🏻
I’m not sure if this will help but on the flute there’s holes in some of the keys
For beginners at least for me we use something called key plugs you just pop them into those holes till you wanna take them out
Without them you have to cover the holes with your fingers so you can play if you don’t covers the holes no sound comes out
Idk if this makes sense but if you don’t have them you should go buy some there like $5
Used to happen to me too. Till I realised that the way I was holding the flute moved my lip plate outward. Make sure that you can feel the edge of the lip plate closest to you at the bottom of your lip...and suddenly you will hear your tone improve!
Thank you B for your lovely (and totally correct) reply :) Jane
Thanks Vikram for your reply! Hopefully that helped Kaz.
Hi Kaz - I hope you have worked out how to get a sound with the whole flute. If not, I'd suggest joining me for this free mini-course: www.flute.school/free - it will really help you align your embouchure hole in your mouth correctly with the flute. Good luck!
Very interesting! Thank you

Hi Jane. Thanks for your video. I was wondering if these tips work also for a fife flute. I just bought one and I could barely get a decent sound from it.
Hi Fernando,
I haven't played a fife flute myself, but I know from members of The Flute Academy who also apply my tips to different types of flutes, including Eastern flutes such as Bansuri. Hopefully some of the tips will help you too! 😀
Hello Jane. I love your straight-forward simple (no frills) yet very useful videos. As a sax player turning to flute I find the most difficult part is holding correctly and steadily the flute so that it doesn't change the embouchure and sound at every slight movement. I call it the "Live eel", if that gives the idea. Do you have a lesson on this topic ? Thanks once more for your great lessons and for sharing. Stefano, from Italy
Hi Stefano,
In The 45 Day Flute Transformation course, there is a module about the stability of the flute. This course is included inside The Flute Academy. Here's the link if you're interested. www.flute.school/academy
I've also got a bonus course for doublers when you join that you might be interested in checking out too! Hope to see you inside the academy! 😀
Excellent vid, as always, thanks Jane ! BTW I would be very curious about your flute: what brand/model/metal is it? :) Greetings from Holland
Hi van :) Glad you liked the video! My flute is a Muramatsu EX model which is the bottom level Muramatsu. And I love it! I have a hand made Williams head joint, which isn't necessary, the Muramatsu ones are excellent - I just got it ages ago and I totally love it, so wouldn't ever change my head joint now.
I really do believe Australians are some of the best people on this earth, so I was NOT surprised when I came across this vid with a solid teaching method for flute 🥰🥰🥰
Wow yay AB! Go Team Australia! Glad you found the vid helpful :)
Best teacher ever
Oh wow, thank you Wagmi!
I coached a Marching band for kids for a dozen years. I normally play Brass but I also can play the clarinet and sax. I can finger the flute of course because it's like the sax but I've never been able to get a continuous sound out of it despite rolling it around. In the mean time, I had no problem teaching neophyte kids to play the flute and learn to read the music. Strange ...eh?
Yes, it's funny isn't it that flute is grouped as a woodwind (with similar fingerings) with clari and sax, when the embouchure is sooooo different. If you haven't already, go and do the free mini-course here: www.flute.school/free - it will really help with your sound and breath control! PS. I loved your comment because I got to learn a new word! Neophyte!! So thank you :)
Jane, I have a used Gemeinhardt flute. The head joint is a little loose , what would you recommend as a fix?
Hi Frank, 😀
Check out this video I made about how to fix a loose foot joint. This will work for the head joint too. ua-cam.com/video/4L5QqHmN5h4/v-deo.html
This helped me some way but I still have problems when playing D and E flat, it seems like it goes a octave higher. Also don't know if you still reply XD.
Hi William - I'm glad the video helped you a little bit! If you mean that LOW D and Eb go too high, try relaxing your embouchure more for the low notes. Hope that helps you! Jane
I took the title literally and thought there was some trick to getting it in the right position. I've been kinda feeling for the edge of the opening.
Feeling for the edge of the opening is a good way to learn how to position your flute, especially if you don't have a mirror at hand when first learning how to play the flute. 😀
I got braces 2 years ago and around 8 months ago I started playing the flute and I got really good but I just got my braces off and I can’t play any high notes anymore and I’m sad so I had to come to this video to see how to play again😭
Hi Ava, 😀
Braces can be annoying when playing flute and then adjusting to playing without them. I'd suggest start with some tone exercises to help your embouchure adjust to the new feeling of without braces.
@@JaneFluteSchool Omg hi! Thanks for the advice I really appreciate it! My band teacher says I adjusted really quick after I got my braces off and sound really great! I am also currently trying to enter a honors band and he said out of both the 7th and 8th grade I am in the top 2 so i might get in, but It just depends who the “judge” type people pick!!
Hello.....about the lip join....I tried it and was not able to get high notes....so my question is, as a person with fuller lips. is the lip join tip one size fits all , or different placements for different sized lips?
Never mind, I see the same thought in the message above with the crass emoji(1Flying fist)....I will move the plate up accordingly
Hi Damien, glad you saw the comment above! Yes, definitely try moving it around a bit, because we all have different body shapes and sizes. Good luck!
OMG I have had a bad tone for decades and no one ever fixed this for me when I was in school taking lessons. Such a simple thing, wish I'd looked to UA-cam sooner.
That's awesome to hear you've improved your tone! 😀
Im a beginner and I can play other notes but when it comes to like D, E flat, F I struggle sm! I don’t understand why? It sounds quite breathy and high pitched and a lot of the time nothing comes out
That's awesome you've just started on your flute journey! 😀
For high notes like F, use a small embouchure (corners of your mouth come forward) and consistent airstream. Double check your fingering too and make sure you're not leaning on trill keys accidentally for example.
🙏!
No one explained this better thanks.
Glad it helped! 😊
I have just joined a band and play fine at home, but at rehearsal my nerves take over and I can barely get out a note. Any ideas please?
Christine - that must be frustrating for you! You can see if you are tensing your face or mouth more when you're nervous - it's quite common to do this. Also, test to see if your shoulders are tensing up from nerves because this will tense up the rest of you (like your embouchure) too!
is using lip balm if you get dry lips going to help?
If it helps you then go for it! If my lips are dry, i put on lip balm, but wipe it off (with my arm normally - very stylish!) just before playing flute.
@@JaneFluteSchool yep sounds like me haha
yes!!!!! I have finnally made a sound thank u so much I made a mistake putting my lips under the platform to blow THANK YOU!!!!!
This will help me in band clads
Glad I could help Anjelo! All the best with your band class! 😀
i dont know why im here i just saw a roach in the bathroom
i’m learning the flute for band, though, and this is really helpful!
That's great to hear it's helpful for your band!
guys help me plz im new to flute! any advice?
Learn one note at a time for the fingering, and really focus on what your lips are doing to produce the note. Definitely double check your embouchure in front of a mirror when first starting out. 😀
I'm confused from what she said:
i dont understand how having your lip in the right place determins the high and low notes.
Surely it is your FINGERS which determine the notes ??
How does the lip placement determine the notes.
Hi Easybullet - You're right, your fingers definitely help get the high notes out, but without the right embouchure, and without the right placement of the lip plate to start with, your fingers will never be enough to overcome the incorrect embouchure. Good luck! Hope that helps! Try the free mini-course if you haven't already to make high notes easy: www.flute.school/highnotes Jane!
Subtitulos en español por favor .Gracias
I get a better cleaner sound when I turn the flute in a bit, but my teacher tells me it's wrong. Is it wrong? x
Careful with turning your flute in, as this can make your tone flat and also unintentionally softer. Although you need to experiment to find what position works best for you. 😀
@@JaneFluteSchool Thank you! And best wishes from here in London.x
As a man, my lip line is much higher than a womans (almost level with the top) I've found I have to go lower than that line, about a 1/4".
Paul - that's good to know. And good on you for working out what works best for you! Jane
You're a lifesaver. Thanks. i was about to quit and you made it look so easy.
Glad I could help Alireza! I hope you continue to play your flute!

Sorry to hear about your loss of ability. Hopefully you'll be able to get back into your flute playing quickly! 😊
@@JaneFluteSchool i have been able to but it took some time
What about people with bigger lips?
I have a video about playing the flute with thicker lips. Here is the link 😀
ua-cam.com/video/VgdBapp8VpI/v-deo.htmlsi=JOd_3u387vdrrHjt
Are the videos where teachers tell you to move your jaw forward a little bit, wrong then?
What if you have to compensate for having bigger lips 🙈😂. Like Jamaican shape. 😏
Hey there, yes I don't agree with moving jaw forward to control the flute. Little bits of jaw movement will happen as a result of moving your lips, but our jaw is not designed to move like that significantly, so it's not really a great idea to do deliberately! Hope that helps! Also, as for bigger lips, for sure - move the flute above where I say to get it in a position that works for you! I should have mentioned that in the video, but it wasn't on my mind at the time I recorded it, so thanks for mentioning it!
