Hello. I’m a 77 yr. old woman, returning to flute after 13 years. I wasn’t a prodigy by any means, but was what was referred to here as a “talented amateur.” Cool. I reached a point where I could play the Prokofiev in recital with a modicum of success. I played in most of the local orchestras and I needed to stop playing for a period of 12 years and want to complete my life cycle with the main love of my life. You have provided insight that works for me. You never know the impact you might have. There is such a service you are providing. Bravo!
A trick. Clean wipe the plate, and after a few minutes of playing, look at the condensation ON THE PLATE. It will SHOW you the direction and width of your air stream, and also, if it is centered or not. I have an asymetrical embouchure as do many flutist. You might have a natural position which is NOT centered...
I’ve never met you, but I can tell that you’re an excellent teacher and that you will only get better from here. You make things very clear, concrete, thorough, and easy to understand. Thank you for this video! I just subscribed.
I mean, you wrote this comment a year ago and it reflected everything I want to say rn. thanks for the video. It really did help just now in December 2024!
i am not a flute player, but a musician and always learn from other instruments. In this case every musician can get an understanding how interesting it is to focus on the small point. The point where the air strarts to vibrate, that we have a wide range to produce sounds and that can learn to control all the possibilities to paint a colorful picture. When we learn to feel the small point we can learn to play with less effort, almost effortlessly.
Hi Devyn, I'm really getting a lot out of your lessons! Would you consider doing one on intonation, including tips for flutists with full vs. thin lips, underbite vs. overbite and how these features influence head joint position and airstream? That would really help me and probably others, too. Thank you so much!
Good examples of both clean and airy notes, and what to do to fix them. You are very good at switching back and forth for comparison. (like your other videos)
Mr.Sowry...Your great performance of "Shindlers List" enthusiased me 2 years ago to begin study flute as adult beginner! But I still have hard time with vibrato. If You make a video about vibrato I will be very thankful.Time has past and You have grown, but still the same child prodigy! Kind regards from Bulgaria!
I am saving this video. This actually allowed me to have a better sound and let me play the high notes on both flute and piccolo more clearly. Thank you so much! ❤️❤️❤️❤️🥺
Thank you so much! The tone of my notes sounds so dry when I play, so your video really helped me understand how I should overcome that particular problem 😁👍🏿
Have an audition in 5 days and my private lesson teacher told me I need better tone to make my high school Wind Ensemble so hoping to improve from here on. Will update if I get into WE.
@fluffydragon327 Nope. Got 2nd chair Symphonic. Considering quitting lmao, because I was in 3rd chair Symphonic last year and the director completely let his bias take over our Wind Ensemble. So, being one chair higher than last year doesn't really sound fun to me
Grazie sei veramente chiaro!!
Hi Devyn ,love your sound and mentoring , hey ive got false teeth and have had to re learn how to play ,do you have any advice on that, or is it the same as if you have teeth to start with ,thanks brent
Are there sound challenges like harmonics. Play the flute without the resonance key? These challenging harmonics are a grest part of my clarinet warmups.
Yes! Many people would debate this, but every instrument sounds different. It's important to try every flute you can get your hands on to see what works for you! The lip cut, the maker, and the material are all factors in the sound quality. It's also important to make sure that your instrument is in perfect working condition, if not, it could cause a lot of sound problems.
Do you have recommendations for a beginner... does the pressure of the air and embouchure change as you change pitches? As you play a scale do you need to also change embouchure? Thanks!!
Of course, I’ll make videos in the future on how to begin playing the flute. The embouchure does need to change slightly between every note but it is so subtle that it would be better thought of in registers. In the low register you will need to point your air down more and have a slightly wider opening of the lips. The opposite is true for the high notes. I would suggest practicing harmonics, finger a low note and overblow to get the higher notes. This will train your embouchure. Hope this helps!
Hi Devyn and All Flute Players!! I am interested to get the Gemeinhardt 3OSHB Offset G; split E mechanism Headjoint: NG Style But also, in Pearl Quantz Series Flute Model 525RBE I just wanted your opinion. Are any of these Flutes is a good choice? Thank you all for inspiring me.
It’s best not to smile or frown when playing, as any unusual lip corner position will cause tension. Try to have your lips look almost as if they are just resting. This can be very difficult. I have a slightly offset side embouchure because of the shape of my lips so just experiment for yourself.
I'm not sure of the science on this, but I would hypothesize that if your lips/mouth were dry, the flute's tone would get worse. Some flutists I know use aquaphor/lip balm regularly to keep their lips moist.
@@DevynFlute thanks for the response! I’m working on the Badinerie from Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B minor. Any tips on the piece? I’m having trouble with double tonguing the 16th notes (especially the low notes)
nothings working, I've been bullied for my airy sound. It's been 3-4 years and I've watched more videos than the amount of people on this planet. I'm thinking of giving up, everyone says the same tips and I've been practicing this for at least 2 years now and nothings worked. If anyone has ACTUAL HELPING tips. Please do so.

@@random_9471 damn I'm sorry to hear that:( I wouldn't quit if I were you though, keep on going ^^ you will get better with time
@fluffydragon327 True it's just that it's my Senior Year so I can't place in a higher band if I wanted to. But I appreciate the encouragement
Does having an underbite contribute to the sound being airy?
Gracias.
Thanck you so much!
Glad I could help!
My issue is that I lose endurance after playing for a while, in the beginning 10-20 mins I sound good, but later it gets fluffy.
