Stranger said when you hear your name spoken you feel your heart glow, Halflings talked about the "gand" infront of the stranger but he didnt feel a thing. So this strengthens my theory that he's not Gand-alf, the stranger is Saruman, although if he's indeed Gandalf he probably is using the name Mithrandir. But I like my theory better, we need to see the good Saruman that Gandalf looked up to.

There's a really awesome detail in episode 1: when the black sauron goo reaches the bottom of the cave, the camera pulls back; look at the stalagmites and stalactites. They are super short and barely developed. After the fade to black, we see the cave again and the stalagmites and stalactites are much much bigger showing that hundreds if not thousands of years have gone by. I thought it was one of the coolest small details in the show.

  • @KozMc
    @KozMc 19 днів тому +27

Such a brilliant breakdown - thank you! I especially love your examples of how the setup in season one is now paying off so early and profoundly in season two. The storyline I dig the most is how Sauron is so subtly and carefully nudging everyone, never lying, always choosing his words with such strategy, and so many of them lapse into individualism and greed, and that's enough for him to achieve his goals (which ... are kinda noble, aspirational, but marred and too proud). Cerebrimbor's own character arc in these three episodes is so resonant of Mairon/Sauron's own experiences, frustrations and self-belief of his smith-based struggle for power and identity and independence while he was in Valinor, with Morgoth - again, noble aims, aspirational, but too proud. They've made Sauron such a great villain in this - he is so sympathetic, but so sadly perverted by his experiences and former treatment and bad choices. Please keep up the coverage - I really enjoyed all of season one, and am loving season two - there's such toxicity out there about the show, but as a Tolkien fanatic, I am eating this up and want thirds and fourth servings, thanks!

Glorfindel was sent to aid Elrond and was (though not yet said) pre-eminent in the war in Eriador. But the other two Istari were sent for a different purpose. Morinehtar and Romestamo - Darkness-slayer and East-helper. Their task was to circumvent Sauron: to bring help to the few tribes of Men that had rebelled from Melkor-worship, to stir-up rebellion ... and after his first fall to search out his hiding (in which they failed) and to cause dissension and disarray among the dark East ... They must have had very great influence on the history of the _*_Second Age_*_ and Third Age in weakening and disarraying the forces of the East ... who would both in the Second and Third Age otherwise have outnumbered the West._

Yeah… but let’s not act like there aren’t pronunciations Tolkien himself used that went on to become standard usage within the fan community for decades now.
If it was just one or two flubs I wouldn’t whine about it, but this video contains so many bizarre pronunciations you have to question whether or not the narrator is doing it on purpose for engagement.

I saw a video on how the wizards were sent during first age to aid against morgoth war. They were young and fair and had all their Mair powers at full strength. But because of this great powers, people looked on them as leaders or to be feared so when they were sent back a second time, they were made to be old men and frail and not nearly the power levels as before in hopes to guide the free peoples not to lead them. And get the free peoples to fight their own battles so they decide their own fates. This is supposedly why cirdan immediately gave Gandalf the ring of power when he was fresh off the boat. It’s because cirdan had met Gandalf thousands of years before and knew and trusted him with this powerful ring.

I really like how they handle evil in the rings of power like its writting between the lines. If you think about it the great music of illuvatar was disrupted by morgoth or melkor - so in every beeing even inside the elves! (proven in the first age war where elves fight against elves) Sauron just uses this fact against the world and this masterpiece of written story shows us everyone needs to decide and actively be good there is no pure good and no pure evil - Sauron himself was once a good student of aule the valar of smithing forging and craftsmanship and the creator of the dwarves - Aule himself wanted to hide the dwarves from illuvatar himself after their revealing they where first destroyed by aule in tears and then illuvatar really felt they where born and created by goodwill and heart because he (big maybe from now on headcannon area) feared they could be corrupted. I like the idea that sauron is between good and evil at first and then gets corrupted and uses the craftsman knowledge by aule to try to rule the world - maybe illuvatar was forseeing anything like this and was disaproving to the creation of the dwarves in the first place not seeing sauron would be the connection of the creation of aule

….but also, is it showing that Maia don’t necessarily always resemble the same person? To borrow from Heavy Spoilers…my Theory Time is that this could establish how the Stranger and the Dark Wizard could both be Blue Wizards that “die”, but will be reborn in new forms as Gandalf and Saruman. I don’t think this is supported in the canon at all, but it would allow the Stranger to be an early version of Gandalf who will eventually be reborn with no memory of who he was (which there’s precedent of in the Two Towers).

That is why the Elves finally do have to return entirely after the events of the LotR. Once the fellowship of the Ring starts its journey, the Elves in mass start sending back their people because they know their Trees will no longer be sustained.
If that was proof enough, the whole plot line of the elf tension is about power. The ring wearers see visions of Halbran/Sauron.
What it really comes down to ultimately is nature of power, not necessarily evil. Evil is a choice, or as it was put in the show actions. A person can be drunk or insufferable, but their actions (and by extension their intention) ultimately determine how they should be judged. Melkor/Sauron are both, at the end of the day, a part of the one creation (song), ergo their Being or essence, isn’t intrinsically Good or Evil. Looking down at the lava, the image we see almost precisely matches the image of the molten rocks in the crater created by the fall of the stranger. We also see this image briefly form in the opening of the show when the magnetic lines briefly reform. Concerning the identity of the Dark Wizard, we must remember that the Elves awoke in Arda, in the east, where there were evil Maiar influencing them. The Maiar were all elemental spirits who initially were neither good nor bad, but chose sides in the developing Epos, with many of these men becoming Balrogs (true story!). There were so many evil Maiar around the Elve's initial home Cuiviénen, that the "Five Guardians" were sent there by the Valar to protect the Elves. Gandalf (Olurin) was one of these, and obviously Radagast (Aiwendil), Saruman (Curomo) and the two Blue Wizards who were Alatar and Pallando. The "Peoples of Middle Earth" have the Five Guardians appearing in the Second Age, which makes sense, since this is when the Elves awakened. There were in fact Dark Istari in Rhun and Cuiviénen, wherever that was. In fact, "the east" was where the Elves, Dwarves, and Men first "awoke", so it is incredibly important to the overall story.

    18:12 Not quite.
The time that the Blue Wizards arrived in Middle-earth is uncertain. In Unfinished Tales, Tolkien wrote that the five Istari came to Middle-earth together in TA 1000. However, in The Peoples of Middle-earth, they are said to have arrived in the Second Age, around the year SA 1600, the time of the forging of the One Ring. Their mission was directed at weakening Sauron's forces in the eastern and southern parts of Middle-earth, whereas the other Istari were focused on the west.
Tolkien also writes in Unfinished Tales that the two Wizards were sent to the East whose names were "Alatar" and "Pallando". Alatar was a Maia of the Vala Oromë who chose him to go to Middle-earth. Alatar asked his friend Pallando to join him on his mission.
The name Alatar probably means "after-comer", as he was one of the original two Maiar to be chosen to become Wizards and follow Sauron to Middle-earth. Tolkien specified that neither Alatar nor Pallando had a name in the west of Middle-earth, unlike the other Wizards.
Later in his life, Tolkien wrote a note suggesting that the names of the Blue Wizards were Morinehtar and Rómestámo. It is not clear whether these names were intended to replace the names Alatar and Pallando, or whether Morinehtar and Rómestámo were alternate names for the Blue Wizards, possibly those given to them by the peoples of Middle-earth.[5]
The name "Morinehtar" means "darkness-slayer." The name "Rómestámo" means "East-helper," from the Quenya word romen, meaning uprising, sunrise, east.
I think it's way more likely that these are the two Blue Wizards who arrived in the 2nd age. One arrived first and his friend came after, this seems to be what is set up here, just with the added plot that the first Blue Wizard probably also forgot who he was and why he was there and won't remember until he directly encounters his friend, the Stranger.

I thought the distinction was also one of purpose: Valar created and shaped the world, Maiar are like divine messengers to the beings within the world.

For once, I actually liked that Cìrdan looked actually like how he was described in the book since by the second age he was the oldest known elf in Middle Earth
I have no problems with older actors playing Elves in the show (for what that matters, anyway), but I still don't like that much that Celebrimbor looks way older than Galadriel

Dude, the Palantir fucked up Pippin and Aragon because Sauron had another, there's no reason for this one to be doing this shit unless Sauron is already in possession of one.

It wasn't just because Sauron had one. It took power to properly use one. Gandalf tells Sarumon that they had been lost and no one knew who could be looking. Who knows what other entity was using it.

Because this show has the dumb habit of expecting the audience to have seen the Jackson movies while at the same time they pretend they have nothing to do with the Jackson stories, yet they lift visuals and even lines from the Jackson movies in every single episode so far.

Actually, the blue wizards arrived earlier, during the 2nd age, and travelled east, which is why I hope all Gandalf hints are red herrings and the Stranger is one of them.

The Stranger and the Dark Wizard being the blues makes the most sense. However, there's the Saruman hints with the Dark. Hopefully, it's all for comparison purposes.

Appreciated the information on why the actress playing Brownwyn didn't return. But not sure I can live with how bad he's butchering these names. It's as if he's reading someone else's script, not having watched the show at all. I'd hate to think that was really what was happening but some of the names/places are repeated so often I can't understand how any regular watcher has not adapted to the show pronunciations. I hope this improves for next week. It's not a fun quirk. It's genuinely making me question credibility and expertise on a channel I typically like.

I agree, it’s kinda lazy effort. Work is allowed to challenge you to be better, resisting the effort of good pronunciation is a poor reflection of job performance.
See NBC’s weekend anchor who actively pronounces Latin American names with correct inflection and accent for the region, instead of Americanized pronunciation. His effort intentionally draws attention to the fact that the world is made up of more than just the United States.
