I thought it was really weird seeing Isildur being kinda dumb in season 1. But the more I see it, the more it makes sense. Now I'm like oh yea, this guys is gonna damn Middle Earth forsure.
Isildur is Elvish for Gilligan.
LOLLLLL The Fellowship of Red Shirts..... That killed me
Elves are such badasses. Unless you don't know their names and then they're toast.
One thing I caught when Poppy and Nori were describing the Stranger to the Stoors was "great Elf", sounds a lot like Gandalf...
“Great big grand elf” is what’s said and it sounds more like “Gandalf” yes.
in the 3rd episode they also call a staff a 'gand' so its either very very on the nose as being Gandalf or this is all trying to trick us into thinking its Gandalf
they used the same thing-tric what thet did with Hodor
hurrr durrrr
The cart wheels to hobbit doors took my breath away
Inhale more before you exhale.
This show needs at least 10 episodes a season to breathe. When did 8 episodes become the standard?
Ikr, all these shows nowadays are trying to do that. Should be 10 at the least each season. Plenty of time for storytelling.
@@gmcmurr15I miss when shows like Walking Dead had 16 episodes as a norm
Since HBO CEO decided they needed to cut corners on everything, including their own big series. They dropped Westworld and several other shows completely from their catalog and they are cutting budgets on all the shows. We will get the same episodes, they will just come next season instead of this one. Money money money money....money.... as the song goes.
@bees5461 everyone is doing this not just hbo
@@UnknownGamer37 OK, I thought this was about this particular show, not all shows on every station. No worries.. I guess I misunderstood.
Thanks for a video free of pre-conceived ideas. There is so much negativity surrounding this show, but i love it, with all its imperfections (and yes, I've read all of the books)
I despise this show but still watch it so that makes me a opposite side of a spectrum ..yours is more fun and more power to you.
@@MatiasSeraBaterista I enjoy it so much too. I like to think of it as a different universe where things are a little different. Like House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones are vastly different from the original sources.
Hear hear, it has its flaws but we’ve got to give it a chance. We can have nice things people.
Yes I found my people! My best mate and I have been fighting the fight for this show, I'm having so much fun. Even knowing it's their own iteration, I think it does a lot to expand on world building that the movies didn't give us a lot of time with. They're taking their liberties with Tolkien's work but that's the good part. It feels fresh, while still feeling nostalgic. Seeing those elves instantly start staring off at their hands, just that was enough to get me smiling.
@@Situaties I'm giving it a chance but idk if I can anymore.
I guess if I forget it supposed to be based on Tolkien I cud be neutral about it but it really make me sick watching it. Can't even laugh at it
I truly don't understand the hate for this show. So far this season has been great!
Because its not Tolkien
@@maximuscryptosx9424 they literally just spent 25 minutes pointing out all the ways it is Tolkien... why is it all or nothing with people? they didnt have the rights to it all, and they are still doing a good job with it imo.
@@ryano1892 The market had spoken. If the content was really Tolkien, the roi would be reflected in ratings and gross revenue. You can follow ur feelings. I go with market data. GG
Your understanding is not required
Agreed, I think it’s pretty good
Definitely my favorite episode of the show so far
So, I’ve read most of Tolkien stuff…I’m a fan. That being said, I really do like this show. People are completely freaking out because it doesn’t align with the books. Who cares? It’s a different take just like most books to films are. I guess I just don’t see what the big deal is. That’s just me though. lol. I like it. Great video by the way!!
I totally agree. And I have read many comments from Tolkien book fans who think the same. The guys who get mad about the show are mostly fans of the movies who do not know the books very well, if at all.
Read LOTR
Seen LOTR many times.
Still loving this series.
grown men acting like cry babies because they dont like a show is pathetic
Equally as pathetic as people who support the corruption of an IP, who pretend that mediocrity is quality. Gross

facts, this show is amazing.
The name Gandalf was hinted to by the leader of the Stoors "Grand Elf"
Poppy talks about looking for a gand, which is a staff I guess

And he gets delivery for Second Breakfast!!!
@@IsiahBradleyThat practical raw egg made me hungry tho ngl...
When I first read TFOTR, Tom Bombadil confused me so much as a character, mainly because of his enigmatic nature. After listening to the audiobook it suddenly hit me, Tom is the physical personification of nature and magic in Tolkien's work (like if Gaia took a human form on Earth)
Does that make the ring bearers the planeteers?
@@SiriusSphynx Spot on 👍
@@myneighbortotoro5163 This is a great way of seeing in it. My interpretation of him is just like that he is not one of the Ainur, but part of Arda itself (not from "Outside"), to me he is like a sentinel watcher seeing the story of Arda unfold but not interfering too much, like how he did nothing to fight Morgoth and Sauron despite him being seemingly immune to the One Ring's corruption.
I like to think either Tom bomadil is either the final chord which was used to finish morgoths song personified,, or a crazy theory its Tolkien himself written into his own book
He existed as a character before the Hobbit and LOTR and the peoples and places in it, so Tolkien made that a big part of his character in it.
I don't get the hate this show gets, they pull a lot from Tolkien and the books and yet its NEVER enough for some purists, they love to hate. I don't see why, I like it a lot the characters are great the story is great, and the action and cinematography are epic. These days people enjoy hating on something more than they enjoy enjoying things.
Cheap shot at the end about the women, and wrong. Some of Tolkiens best and moat important characters were women - Luthein, Melian, Yavanna, Eowyn, Elwing, Niniel, Morwen, to name a few.
Of course. Eowyn killed the witch king! Half the Valar were female. Some of the best and most heroic characters in Tolkiens' books were female. We have to keep up the narrative that Tolkiens books are sexist, old-fashioned, and need repurposed for a "modern" audience. 🙄
I like Nerdanel :)
Yeah, I was also surprised by Ryan saying that, maybe he meant among Men? Most of the one you mention are Elves, and Valar women also exist.
"IN COMPARISON" cmon people. It's not that there are no well written women. It's that the women take an obvious backseat when it comes to he heroics in comparison to he men on screen
As someone who’s read LotR multiple times, nothing will beat this episode for me, so incredible to see thing we’ve been waiting to see for over 20 yrs
Tom or the Barrow Wights?
I’ve wanted to see both in live action for soo long and this episode had BOTH! Definitely a highlight episode of this season for me.
@@RangerHouston we knew Tom was coming so that wasn’t a surprise, but the hobbit origine and the Ent Wife broke me down, I was sobbing the entire scene with Arondir and the Ents
Loving this season! Thank you for all the detail. It really helps a non book reader fan.
The white statue the orcs were pulling down was the statue of Feanor in Eregion (Most likely Ost-In-Edhil). Which is where Celebrimbor is and the legion of orcs were travelling to in this episode.
This episode definetly was very good. And the story of the stranger and the haarfoots even starts to get really interesting
😂🤣
I enjoyed this episode very much, haters gonna hate
@@sherryjohnson3804 I WISH I could love this show and I hate that I can’t love it. The large amounts of lore breaking isn’t what bothers me, it’s the absolutely terrible writing that bothers me the most. This episode was 1 of the absolute worst so far, there were countless things that happened that defy logic and good script writing. If you can’t see or acknowledge that then you know nothing about cinema or what makes a show great.
@@scottporter4524 Thw writing is excellent, in both seasons so far.
@JM-jj3eg okay so for a recent example, please explain how Isildur ended up being alive (everyone including his father assumed he died) and trapped in a spider web inside a cave in a random location, while the last time we saw him on screen he appeared to have gotten killed by falling boards inside of a crumbling house on fire from the volcano? Oh wait, you have absolutely no idea do you? Maaaaybe bc that's the result of terrible writing? I could give you literally hundreds of examples, but obviously I'm wasting my time if you think this show's writing is "excellent". Honestly I could easily make a minimum 10 hour long video just covering the inconsistencies and terrible writing from all episodes thus far.
My wife and I are enjoying this show. Haters be hating, but we love the fun.
The show has been decent but THIS episode was definitely their best work and gave me the most lord of the rings vibes ever. I seriously felt the heroism and great storyline in this one
I do believe the Stranger is not Olorin (Gandalf) but one of the Two Blue Wizards that were sent first. Same with the Dark Wizard, he is probably one of the Blues that was corrupted by his own greed for power like the Saruman the Uglie
personally i think it Saruman...
@@ryano1892 Alatar and Pallando were the two wizards who were sent east to Rhun to stir up rebellion against Sauron. Problem with this being Saruman is that He was also sent with Radaghast togeather.
he is David Guetta
Interesting idea but in the end it’s gotta be Gandalf right? he’s always shown interest in the halflings, this is the origin for that.
On one hand, there are quite a lot of parallels and callbacks especially to Gandalf with the Stranger, even more than the Dark Wizard and Saruman and in some ways the Starnger being Gandalf, even of not lore-accurate, makes for a strong throughline.
But I do think it would better for the story, or at least the freedom for it to be a bit more creative if it were two blue wizards who just have those characteristics as a thematic echo for the future story and perhaps The Stranger imparts some things onto Gandalf at some point.
In either case wouldn't be any big deal, just a preference to add something more unpredictable.
“Good stories deserve a little embellishment “-- J.R.R. Tolkien.
This is why I like Rings of Power. Is it great? No. Is it a fun watch and something new? Yes. Have I read the books and watched the movies? Yes. And as a 54 year old, I have found reasons to like almost anything. And if I don’t, then I just won’t revisit it again.
I'm 43, and the older I get, the more I think the same way. Is it perfect? No. Is it still better than watching re-runs of old sitcoms or old movies or whatever, simply because it's new? Yup. If I don't enjoy it, I can simply stop watching/reading/listening and move on with my life. Not really a big deal.
People are entitled to like/dislike this show as they please, of course... But it's a disservice to the show and to themselves to even try to make the comparison to the Peter Jackson films, and especially to the source material. I've been a reader all my life, and books are a wonderful form of entertainment... But in today's world, any IP is fighting for everyone's attention while a million other things are happening at the same time and not many people enjoy or take the time to read... So unless one wants the works of Tolkien (in this specific example) to fall into obscurity, a big budget show on a streaming service that brings attention to the world and lore of Middle Earth for newer generations isn't the worst thing to happen. Regardless of how much it deviates from the established lore. Sure, those deviations piss off the most hardcore in the fanbase... A lot of whom are watching the show anyway because they WANT to like it, but they just can't put aside their preconceptions long enough to just enjoy it for what it is... So instead they watch so they can complain about what it isn't.
@@jediraydenIt's good enough. In a few spots it is actually great. But, every couple of scenes you wish they'd have hired someone to polish the script a bit. Some of the exposition sounds like an ad read in a podcast...
I was so sad when Bombadil wasnt in the Peter Jackson movies. He was my favorite character when I read the books as a kid.
I think Tom Bombadil is Tolkien's representation of whoever the reader is.. imagine Tom already exist right before everything else in the book, light in particular as if light came to be right after opening the book. Tom isn't affected by the ring, Tom was just at the right place when some of the characters needed help where he could steer the story without really affecting the events.
He could be the reader. He could be the writer. Or he could just be a character that existed before the world of LOTR existed, so that was part of him in LOTR.
I was so hyped to see Tom Bombadil and the Entwives.
But I definitely believe that the Stranger is one of the 2 Blue Wizards, with the dark wizard being the other. It just makes sense when you think of it lol
They've given us zero context for that. And a billion hints the other way.
@@MetyMining Why not just say it's Bugs Bunny and get it over with.
The scene right before the fight with the Barrow Wights remind me of the character selection screen of LOTR: Return of the King video game. All characters in a circle with smoke all around them.
Amazingly, Tom Bombadil has an on screen version... in the Post-Soviet adaptation of Lord of the Rings made in 1991! Which is absolutely weird, sometimes even mighty scary but also surprisingly captivating.
This man made a hate video on the hobbit being the worst thing to ever be produced but is now here pretending Rings of Power is good. Mad world
Well, The Hobbit is partly very good and partly very bad. I love it anyway. But Rings of Power is steadily getting better than The Hobbit.
Some ppl are upset about “book changes” im not affected by changes but what do you think?
Oh man, Doug is back!! Thank you. Silly, I know, but Doug is just great.
I can't stand the character Theo. He gets no accountability. He gets off scot free. He is partly responsible for all the deaths that happen until the ring is in Mount Doom!

Stoor dwell leader '.... a great big grand elf ....' mmmmmm .. now say that fast .... is that a Gandalf easter egg perhaps

Barrowwights are from the time of the witch king of angmar, third age.
Boy are you gona be disappointed when the Witch King makes an appearance towards the end of season 4. :)
No. Nobody knows what they are and nobody knows how old they are. The witch king just summons them to the Barrow Downs.
Nope, they are remnants of more ancient warriors from the east (thus the arabic / oriental design). This are not the same as dead men of Anor summoned by witch king. This ones was resurrected by Sauron passing by to Eregion (as well as destroying the bridge) to slow down elves coming to Eregion, so he have more time to work on Celebrimbor and rings.

Did he really say at the end end of the video that Tolkien didn't bother giving names to his female characters?
Tolkien, as a linguist, did indicate the correct pronunciation. Elven script is a quite complete phonetic alphabet.
They’re totally going to do the
“You’re the Grand-Elf!”
“Grand-elf? …Gandalf… hmm I like that name…”
And it gonna be hilarious
i had so much fun with this episode. i never liked Tom Bombadil from the books, but Rory Kinnear's take on him won me over easily. like now i get it when at the council of elrond someone asks "why not the ring to Tom?" and Elrond is like "yah nah, that dude will just lose it." so many great references and the barrow wrights were terrifying. loved it
Seeing my favorite character from the books was certainly a nice surprise
But did you peg him as soon as his back appeared on screen?
My spidey sense perked WAY up.
@@blairhoughton7918 peg him?
I've been watching this channel for years, yet it JUST NOW occurred to me that that's not Doug's real voice
You are adorable! But I hear you. His voice is so distinctive. 😂
no way, stop lying, why would Doug be using some sort of fake voice
To be fair, Sauron never touched the Elven rings so never had the chance to corrupt them. In a way it lessens the drama of "are they or aren't they" for anyone who's read the books.
When Doug said jeez man don’t show that I started laughing but for a split second before that I was wiped out of it lol
Thank you for finally explaining to me how Smeagal/Gollum both was and wasn't a hobbit
So far, i have found this season 10x better than last season. And i liked last season.
@screencrush when the ent wife says listen to me in quenya : lasta be ne ( wrong spelling I’m sure ) reminded me of Arwen talking to Frodo it means listen to me
Guys... he isnt Gandalf... just stop.
He is one of the Blue Wizards. Tom literally said he tried getting the filth from his rags.... he is seeking his staff and magic to fight the dark wizard of the east....
His name will more than likely be "ALATAR" aka "the darkness slayer"
Old Man Ironwood is an olive tree.
I just realized something! Because of the precedence of Gandalf being reincarnated, what if the stranger technically IS Gandalf (and maybe the Dark Wizard is Saruman), but in their conflict, they die and are sent again to Middle Earth later, thus keeping in line with Tolkien’s original lore regarding the Istari?
11:10 Yeees this part to show Hobbit love is one of the many good moments in El Bueno S02E04 ✅
I like what's going down so far in ROP2. Perfect? No, but very good compared to season 1.
"and as for me, i don't even know what a book is" i can't stop laughing. great way to start the video
Thank you for perfect video and a dose of positive enthusiasm. Well appreciate in these times!
I said aloud that the view when Elrond's team was marching was epic. I Loved seeing Tom Bombadil! The sinking mud scene reminded me of Princess Bride. I started looking for R.O.U.S.s after that! 😅 I was thinking the Dark Wizard would be Khamûl, the ringwraith, but Old Tom called him an Istar, so he's probably Saruman.
The mud scene reminded me more of an early flight in The Witcher.
The score from Willow hit me in the feels
I'm pretty sure the orcs are using search lines from Shadow of Mordor video game when they hear something and the layout of the shots mimic the hierarchy of the advanced orcs and their upgraded armor and weapons when they level up, thus the bone shoulder pads
A great twist would be the stranger being Saruman.
i actually don't think its that big of a twist, it makes total sense imo and i think they are purposefully making it seem like Gandalf
@@ryano1892 glad I’m not the only one haha it makes more sense to show case sarumans downfall because we know gandalf is good already.
@@GetSignalized yes to me Saruman makes way more sense to me, and i think they just keep throwing little Gandalf hints out there to misdirect people lol
Better than the Blue Wizard crew's guess.
I loved this episode! I also like the Stoors
THE STRANGER IS NOT GANDALF. Gandalf did not come to Middle Earth until the 3rd age
Canon, schmanon. Amazon doesn't own everything and wouldn't have to stick to it if they did.
„That Olórin [Gandalf], as was possible for one of the Maiar, had already visited Middle-earth and had become acquainted not only with the Sindarin Elves and others deeper in Middle-earth, but also with Men, is likely, but nothing is (has yet been) said of this.“ (J.R.R. Tolkien, The Peoples of Middle-earth - Part 2, Chapter XIII, "Last Writings, p.381")
Did anyone catch the Stoor saying "oh so he's a Grandelf" ....
Yes. It wasn't subtle at all, I'm sure 99% of the audience caught it.
It’s pretty obvious the desert is the Shire, and when Numenor falls the water levels will rise and bring water to the desert and create the shire
TOM BOMBADIL = ERU ILUVATAR 😆😆
It's a fun theory and I guess it does have some merit.
- The ring has no influence over him.
- if Tom was Eru, he would never reveal it.
- Tom singing along with his wife can be looked at as a reflection of ERU singing the music of the Ainur.
- Tom call's himself the "eldest" "there before the river and the trees..."
What did he say to Frodo?
"Just chance brought me then, if chance you call it. It was no plan of mine, though I was waiting for you."
One of many theories surrounding the enigmatic Tom Bombadil.
Mrs. Bane.... that's amazing!
13:15 "The Barrow-wights were evil spirits, although their true nature is unknown; it is not known if they were perverted Maiar (Úmaiar) or spirits of Orcs, fallen Avari, or evil Men. The Witch-king of Angmar sent them to the Barrow-downs, in order to prevent a resurrection of the destroyed Dúnedain kingdom of Cardolan."

I am not sure if she is Bilbo’s grandmother or great grandmother or maybe even further back but the brandyfoot name is mentioned . She would also be kin to Pippin and Merry. Which would explain thier love of adventure and getting into predicaments
Not sure hobbits live a couple thousand years. This is all happening towards the tail end of the 2nd age and our LoTR characters are 3000 yrs into the 3rd age.
You're wrong. There were no Hobbits during this age of Middle Earth.

whats with the hate for this show? it gets better every episode

Am I mistaken or didn’t the Barrowdowns not become haunted until the Third Age when Angmar sent them in his destructive war with Arnor (specifically Cardolan)?
He quite literally addresses this in the video. He claims they became haunted in this show early to paint the picture that sauron is corrupting various areas of middle earth.
@@zStC1I know what SC said, but that is his interpretation of what we saw on the show. Not what events took place in the history of Middle Earth. The show has taken lots of liberties with the lore. Some I’m cool with, but some of this stuff is becoming a bit much. They don’t have to use elements of the third age we know just to make it more familiar to the audience. Like the tease of the Balrog under Khazad-dum.
Do not seek logic or cohesion with the source material in this show. Only to madness, does that path lead.
Instead, understand that this is a complete departure from what you know to be true. Only names of places and things have been used. Expect literally everything else to be made up by people who think they can improve Tolkiens masterpiece.
The Barrow-downs exist since the First Age. And nobody knows who or what the Barrow-wights are or how old they are.
