- Hear some ancient ASMR, this time the story of the Mesopotamian flood - complete with a Noah figure, and three birds! The Mesopotamian flood narrative is a great story, with strong connections to the flood narrative in the book of Genesis. This narration is a composite of two versions of the story (cuneiform tablets get broken, so we use other copies of the same text to fill in the gap!), using Benjamin Foster's translations from 'Before the Muses' - amzn.to/35p3a6d
The pauses in the narration indicate breaks in the tablets :)

How does it go on? - I could google it, but I do not want to spoiler myself ;-)
What I had to google after all, was the word "dyke" - I did not know, it had another meaning besides the one I was aware of (sorry, second language!)
I love these thank you for doing them. I have a couple questions. Why is there so much repetition in the text? Is it because it is compiled from multiple fractured tablets, or that's the way the write these stories back then or something else maybe?
Also the audio changes from stereo to right channel and back to stereo a few times. Is that for effect or accident?

I notice that most religious texts have that sort of mindless repetition like Mormons with "exceedingly" et al. I mean, how "ready" does someone have to get to speak for cryin' out loud? Even if Enki had to get his phone out to do his speaking it wouldn't take long enough to mention it in the story.
@FourthDimensionalJake Ancient literary texts often have a poetic nature, that's why there's a lot of repetition.
@@vladtepes9614 and @Red Hunteur thankyou for responding but I am aware religious text often have repetition. I'm asking specifically in this case we are dealing with fragments of at least two different tablets. So I'm asking is it because of the poetic nature of the text or something else in this case.
@@jake4d40 - Take a view of the Sumerian Grammar video series where they translate an ancient temple dedication tablet - it follows the same pattern... it's how they "wrote" at the time, but probably not how they talked. ;-/ Each horizontal line (which might wrap around for a couple more Cuneiform glyphs) is like a single statement. And in the larger texts, there are perhaps three or four columns of these horizontal rows. I suspect the translation simply follows the original structure, but Dr. Josh or Megan would know more than me, as I'm just learning this stuff..
Hi Jake - there are multiple tablets used to reconstruct the text, but the repetitions are due entirely to how the text was composed :)
The audio changes are entirely accidental 😓I'll try and fix that when I upload the complete myth!

Kay B no, none that I’m aware of :) we do have to reconstruct this to a certain extent using copies from different time periods, but they’re definitely not controversial reconstructions.
