  • Joel Hilsden outlines the basics of EQ on an analog console using vocals and acoustic guitar as working examples. This is a tutorial for basic EQ principles in a live stage setting, where mic placement and equipment upgrades are not an option.

Excellant job Joel. When I started running the sound at my church in 1979 I had to learn everything from what few books I could find and by grabbing the soundman from every music group that I could get access to. Of course there was no internet back then. It probably took me two or three years to learn what you have demonstrated here in nine minutes, ha. Keep up this good work this should be helpful to a lot of people.I am retired from running the sound at church (mostly) and I just play on YT.

I found this video and must have clicked mouse bc i wound up about a halfway through the video when you started making adjustments - with a fresh song i figured lets just listen and do what he does (estimating the type of recording I am trying to achieve) - and hells bells g golly jesus if it didn't help build a foundation toward an overall better recording of a song i have recorded multiple ways - sometimes it pays to watch a video and do it from the foundation of your recording - This video is just one of those little setup things i tweak prior to an acoustic guitar vocal recording that is as fundimental as vocal thickening tricks or anything else really - its part of the process now, and it saves me a lot of time throughout the journey.

Another great way to use a sweep EQ when you don't know which frequencies you should dip is: Turn up the gain for, say, the high mids. Then sweep through the complete spectrum and find a spot where you hate the sound that comes out of the speakers. Then dip the gain below 0 and you should have cleaned up your signal quite nicely. After a while you will eventually learn which frequencies have which effect on a signal.

Thank you for posting this video. I watched it yesterday afternoon and went straight to church and reset the EQ on our lapel mic based on the info you provided. All I can say is "WOW"!! Normally, it's kind of tinny and annoying sounding, but after using the sweepable mid as you described, the same mic was full and rich with plenty of gain before feedback. I would love to see more videos like this from you...professional and informative. THANKS!!

I have the same ministry at my local church and tonight while editing a record of the worship session of last sunday I got a little bit angry about the poor sound on the vocals I am getting out of the mixer. So I popped out YT to find a good video that could help me.
Sadly I do not have a parametric or sweep knob on my mixer neither good microphones however I think the idea is quite well stated and very useful.
God bless you. I think it was no coincidence that I found your video.
