    What do you use a maul or mallet instead of a hammer for stamping? What is the best maul weight for stamping?

    • @TandyLeatherCo
      @TandyLeatherCo  8 років тому +1

      +Rachel McCormick It's all a matter of reference. Lighter mauls are typically better for stamping where heavier mauls are often better for driving. The main thing is to avoid using a metal striking instrument as it can shatter the tools.

    "dampening" is mentioned but not demonstrated - as if those of us looking up videos on "how to stamp leather" are just going to know how that process works, what it entails and the best way to go about it without having any need or want to actually see it.

    • @Well-groomed_Hobo

      Just take a damp sponge and rub it on the leather. Let the water soak in for a few minutes until the leather starts to return to its original color and is cool to the touch

    Can I do this on an old belt? And how wet does the leather need to be?

    • @TandyLeatherCo
      @TandyLeatherCo  6 років тому

      No you cannot do this on most old belts. If the leather is finished and treated the water will not take to the leather.
      This is the type of leather used for belts and stamping (Veg Tanned Leather ) www.tandyleather.com/en/product/natural-cowhide-belt-blank-2-5-1-cm
      We the leather until it soaks about half way through the leather.

    • @TandyLeatherCo

      ArtyHelen Most natural Vegetable Tanned Leather is well suited for stamping. Finished leathers typically do not take stamping well and it can ruin the finish.

    What is the rotary tool I've seen in a video that indents or even possibly punches leather for thread holes? I am not referring to a rotary punch. This tool has the same size tips on each of the rotary arms to make a line of threading "holes" that are perfectly evenly spaced.

    • @MountainFisher
      @MountainFisher 5 років тому +1

      It's called an overstitch tool if you mean the tool with the little spiked wheel? It doesn't punch the holes it just marks them for you to use as a guide to punch or drill the holes. It is easier to just get a 5mm stitching chisel set from Weaver Leather, Tandy's are too expensive or too small you don't want to use the 3mm spacing as that is forthin leather like a wallet, but I just use two sizes now most of the time. 4mm set for wallets and thin 4oz or less leather and the 5mm for everything else.

    How expensive is it to get into leather? I want to stamp and emboss a bridle for my sister...

    • @TandyLeatherCo
      @TandyLeatherCo  9 років тому

      Hello Rion! You could start with a Deluxe Leathercraft Set which would come with the basic tools and walk you through getting started.
      www.tandyleatherfactory.com/en-usd/search/searchresults/55502-00.aspx
      If you knew specifically what design you are interested in making, you can buy the tools needed individually at www.tandyleatherfactory.com!

    • @TandyLeatherCo
      @TandyLeatherCo  9 років тому

      Craftaids are a great way to get a good pattern. www.tandyleatherfactory.com/en-usd/home/department/leather-craft-patterns/craftaids-ind/craftaids-ind.aspx
      Each Craftaid will tell you the specific stamps you will need for the design, but most utilize the "Basic 7" that are included in the Deluxe Leathercraft Set or available at www.tandyleatherfactory.com/8170-00.aspx
      You can also use our alphabet stamps to create the name. www.tandyleatherfactory.com/en-usd/home/department/leather-stamps/alphabet-number-leather-stamp-se/alphabet-number-leather-stamp-se.aspx

    Am I the only one who can't stand doing this kind of stamping? The supposedly easy monotony and systematic pattern stamping drives me nuts, because it lacks the smooth flow of carving.
