My recommendation is to stay at a B&B in Puna or Hilo overnight. There's so much to see down there. Mahalo for the stop you made at Manuka (my keyboard doesn't have a Kahako so I can't
put one over the last "a" in Manuka). No one ever stops there, but we do every time we go from Kona to Hilo (which is at least once while we are on Big Is.) Pit toilets and picnic tables & very
interesting selection of trees. I think the frond you showed was a Monkey Pod tree from N.Zealand. Big Island is our favorite island. I recommend spending time there, not just a day trip.
We used to come every year for Merrie Monarch Festival (the Hula Olympics). Punalu'u is gorgeous. I saw the most amazing thing on a hike coming back from the Turtle Rescue. A huge
hive of bees built into the rock near the ocean. Maybe 3 to 5 ft high and I kid you not, a city block long, dripping honey all along it's length and height. Lots of bees so I didn't stick around,
I didn't have a camera with me, but I will never, ever forget what I saw there. The Big Is, has lots of treasures for those who take the time to look and listen.

Great video Julie and Eric! No trip to Punalu'u Black Sand beach is complete without a visit to the bakery! I could almost taste the malasadas... I really appreciate you guys! Aloha!

The PUNALU'U bakery is a must. Best to get there before the tour vans and buses do. I remember our first time visit. Late 1980. It was just a small bakery and had about 4 small tables on the front porch..

Thanks for this one! Learnt some more places to go when going south. Somehow we always go to Volcano National park and then time is up ( ofcourse except for the bakery). Maybe next time we better stay a night somewhere south to see some more beautiful things( loved the parcs!). 💗

I can recommend Sea Mountain, directly beside Punalu'u Back Sand Beach. There are some VRBO units as well as as AirB&B. You are central to Ka'u, the South Point and the bakery, but over the mountain from Mauna Loa ...

Thanks 🙏 for the info I honestly didn’t like the big island cause for one ☝️ the beaches had fees and closes unlike Honolulu had so much to do and way beautiful islands but I did enjoy the experience thanks for sharing beach 69!! I loved the color there

TEX Drive In's malasadas up in Honoka'a

Is the Punalu bakery’s malasada really rated higher than Tex’s Drive in in Honokaa? Might be a tie

That's a kahako, or macron over the "A" in Manukā.
